Earth Day

National Holidays Each year on April 22, it is National Earth Day. This annual day is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. John McConnell pioneered the name and concept of Earth Day in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. His thought, for Earth Day, was to have it be the first day of spring, March 21, 1970 and that day was sanctioned in a Proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. One month later a separate Earth Day, focused on the United States, was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson. This day was created to be an environmental teach-in to be held on April 22, 1970. The original national coordinator in 1970, Denis Hayes, launched an organization and took it international in 1990, organizing events in 141 nations. In 2009, the April 22 date was designated as International Mother Earth Day by a consensus resolution adopted by the United Nations. The Earth Day Network now globally coordinates Earth Day and it is annually celebrated in more than 192… Wednesday, April 22, 2026. For more info visit nationaldaycalendar.com.

National Armed Forces Day

National Holidays Armed Forces Day is a day to pay tribute to the men and women who serve the United States Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, is part of Armed Forces Week. It was with the idea for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country that President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish this single holiday. The single day celebration then stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. It was on August 31, 1949, that Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force Days. Parades, open houses, receptions and air shows were held to celebrate the first National Armed Forces Day held on May 20, 1950. 1962 – President John F. Kennedy established Armed Forces Day as an official holiday. The United States longest running city-sponsored Armed Forces Day Parade is… Saturday, May 16, 2026. Of the more than 1,500 designs that were submitted to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, his was chosen. Many people have died protecting our country. On National Flag Day, raise the flag and fly it proudly. NATIONAL FL… Sunday, June 14, 2026. For more info visit nationaldaycalendar.com.
