The Board of Neighborhood Commissioners (The Commission) was established by the City Charter in 1999 as a policy-setting and oversight commission for the Neighborhood Councils and the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment. Grab your favorite Angelenos and your least favorite pair of closed-toe shoes... the Great LA River CleanUp is back! Join us at the Sepulveda Basin Athletic Complex, where wide fields meet one of the most important natural stretches of the River. This soft-bottom reach is home to tall willows, herons, egrets, and countless smaller species that depend on the Basin’s wetlands. Working together, we’ll clear trash and protect this unique urban refuge, helping ensure that the River’s wildlife and the communities who come here to play, walk, and gather can share a cleaner, healthier space. Parking is available in the 5903 and 6301 Balboa Blvd parking lots, as well as along Balboa Blvd. This site will have one of the largest groups of participants. The Great Shakeout

Every year, millions of people recognize the third Thursday of October as International Shakeout Day, a time specifically geared toward earthquake preparedness. Activities normally include conducting drills and exercises, and at a minimum, practicing the earthquake safety steps ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ as if experiencing a major earthquake. What is the ShakeOut drill? The Great ShakeOut earthquake drills are based on scenario earthquakes that could affect the area if they were to actually take place. Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills are an annual opportunity for people in homes, schools, and organizations to practice what to do during earthquakes, and to improve preparedness. Shine LA

Created by Mayor Bass, Shine LA is a movement that strengthens communities by bringing Angelenos together from across the city to beautify LA neighborhoods. With major global events just around the corner – the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 2027 Superbowl and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games – Shine LA inspires Angelenos to take pride in preparing their communities to step onto the world stage.  Since launching in April, Shine LA has brought together more than 2,000 Angelenos for a day of service in more than 30 neighborhoods across Los Angeles. Volunteers have participated in activities such as tree planting, utility box painting, loose litter pick-up to educational programming on composting.  Shine LA is every fourth Saturday of the month in neighborhoods across Los Angeles.  Volunteer now to Make LA Shine! Board of Neighborhood Commissioners Meeting

The Board of Neighborhood Commissioners (The Commission) was established by the City Charter in 1999 as a policy-setting and oversight commission for the Neighborhood Councils and the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment. The Commission is comprised of 7 Commissioners appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council to 5 year terms. The Commissioners are all from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas of the City of Los Angeles. The Commission holds regular public meetings the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Monday of each month and may also hold special meetings to conduct business. The Commission ensures that the City Charter and the Neighborhood Council Plan are realized by setting policies with the aim of making Neighborhood Councils diverse, inclusive, and representative of all community stakeholders. Shine LA

Created by Mayor Bass, Shine LA is a movement that strengthens communities by bringing Angelenos together from across the city to beautify LA neighborhoods. With major global events just around the corner – the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 2027 Superbowl and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games – Shine LA inspires Angelenos to take pride in preparing their communities to step onto the world stage.  Since launching in April, Shine LA has brought together more than 2,000 Angelenos for a day of service in more than 30 neighborhoods across Los Angeles.
