Earth Day

National Holidays Each year on April 22, it is National Earth Day. This annual day is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. John McConnell pioneered the name and concept of Earth Day in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. His thought, for Earth Day, was to have it be the first day of spring, March 21, 1970 and that day was sanctioned in a Proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. One month later a separate Earth Day, focused on the United States, was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson. This day was created to be an environmental teach-in to be held on April 22, 1970. The original national coordinator in 1970, Denis Hayes, launched an organization and took it international in 1990, organizing events in 141 nations. In 2009, the April 22 date was designated as International Mother Earth Day by a consensus resolution adopted by the United Nations. National Armed Forces Day

National Holidays Armed Forces Day is a day to pay tribute to the men and women who serve the United States Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, is part of Armed Forces Week.
