Evolutionary Blues... West Oakland's Music Legacy
Original Programming
Evolutionary Blues is a KTOP original program.
The Blues is an earthy, soul-stirring mélange of roots music and personal narratives that became the defining soundtrack of Black America. Wherever Black people settled that soundtrack took on a local flavor. In Northern California, the influences came from the musicianship of Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. Seventh Street in West Oakland supported and bolstered Blacks who answered the call of the war effort in the late 1940’s. Entrepreneurship created a fully contained community that provided work, homes and all the necessities of life including a fully developed music scene. Watch as more than 30 local musicians share their inspiration and describe the trajectory of the Oakland Blues: how it evolved and what it has become.

The Many Facets of Sikh: California and Beyond
KTOP Acquired Programming
Presented courtesy of filmmaker Eve A. Ma (Dr. L. Eve Armentrout Ma, Esq.)
Producer-Director, Palomino Productions -
This 40-minute documentary introduces us to the history and basic beliefs of the 250.000+ strong Sikh community. Sikism, more properly called Sikhi, has produced some of California's outstanding figures from the "father of fiber-optics" to the peach king. It is a religion, but a religion which emphasizes working within the larger community rather than withdrawing from it. It is also a very colorful community - literally. The women tend to wear bright colored clothes and baptized Sikh men wear a turban...sometimes black but more often, red or green or yellow.
