A People's History of SFO: A Presentation by Dr. Eric Porter

A People's History of SFO: A Presentation by Dr. Eric Porter-Part of the Courthouse Docket Series Think you know SFO? Think again. On Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. the San Mateo County History Museum welcomes Dr. Eric Porter of UC Santa Cruz for a fascinating look at one of the Bay Area's most iconic — and most overlooked — landmarks. In his book A People's History of SFO: The Making of the Bay Area and an Airport, Porter goes far beyond flight schedules and terminal renovations. He uncovers the airport as a living, breathing reflection of the region itself — its politics, its environment, and the communities who have shaped it and been shaped by it. This is the story of a place most of us pass through without a second thought, told in a way that might make you stop and look a little longer the next time you're waiting at your gate. Calling Us In: An Invitation to Joy

Join us for a powerful new performance piece co-created by Sarah Crowell and the Skywatchers Ensemble. Calling Us In: An Invitation to Joy begins at a San Francisco Tenderloin bus stop, where a chorus of neighbors—each carrying the invisible “backpacks” of lived experience—wait for a ride toward healing, belonging, and transformation. From this shared starting point, the performance unfolds as a multidisciplinary journey blending theater, poetry, and movement, rooted in the collective stories of the Tenderloin community. Through song, humor, vulnerability, and raw storytelling, the piece creates moments of deep connection between performers and audience alike. As these stories emerge, Calling Us In challenges us to imagine a different kind of community—one where no one is invisible, every story matters, and belonging is not something we earn, but something we create together. This is more than a performance—it is an invitation to witness, to feel, and to reimagine joy as an act of collective liberation. Category: Community Events / Volunteerism. Theater / Concerts.
