On Thursday, April 16, 2026, The Clift welcomes historian John Martini, who will present a fascinating look at one of the most defining events in San Francisco history: the 1906 earthquake and fire.
At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906, a massive earthquake estimated at magnitude 7.9 struck along the San Andreas Fault, violently shaking San Francisco and the surrounding region. Buildings collapsed, streets split open, and gas lines ruptured. In the hours that followed, fires ignited across the city and burned for three days, destroying more than 28,000 buildings and leaving roughly 250,000 residents homeless. Music Director Lawrence Kohl presents pianist Jon Nakamatsu in his debut Pacific Chamber Orchestra (PCO) performance on Saturday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church (LOPC) .
Nakamatsu is a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medalist and a Bay Area favorite. A frequent solo recitalist at the Bankhead, he joins PCO for American composer Edward MacDowell’s buoyant Second Piano Concerto. The program culminates in the gorgeous melodies and triumphant sweep of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

Festival Napa Valley kicks off its 20th Anniversary Season with a festive Opening Night led by conductor Stephanie Childress, celebrating classical masterworks, world premieres, and iconic songs by American composers.
The program features Beethoven's Coriolan Overture alongside the premiere of a concerto by composer Michael Thurber, commissioned by Festival Napa Valley and written especially for the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Time for Three. Also on the program is Young America, a six-movement cycle for chorus and orchestra by acclaimed composer Gordon Getty, performed by the Young People's Chorus of New York City under the artistic direction of Francisco J. Nuñez.
The evening culminates in a symphonic reimagining of songs by Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, and others – an exhilarating finale that sets the tone for the landmark anniversary season ahead.
