Free Historic Walking Tours in San Mateo County
FREE Historic Walking Tours Throughout San Mateo County This Summer
Complementing its Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse, the San Mateo County History Museum is offering FREE walking tours throughout the Peninsula this summer. From Daly City to Pigeon Point, visit four cemeteries, a stable, six downtowns, one interesting residential area, a ranch, a dueling site, a slot machine collection, a lighthouse, and the Cow Palace.
Victorian Days is also a FREE event and features family activities that inform youngsters about life in the nineteenth century. It takes place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 8.

San Francisco Playhouse will close its 2025-26 season with the mega-hit musical “Hairspray.” Winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, this bold Broadway phenomenon is piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance, and groovy dancing. Set in 1962, “Hairspray” follows Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on her favorite TV show. Contemporary Australian artist Tracy Marie Shapland is reflecting her ongoing exploration of the world through color, intuition, and imagination. Inspired by her experiences of travel, nature, music and human connection, Tracy Marie begins each painting with a feeling rather than a fixed plan. Now, she’s bringing that feeling to Petaluma.
Opening on Tuesday, August 11th, 2026 at Usher Gallery (located at 1 Petaluma Blvd North), her showcase, "VISIONS OF THE LIVING EARTH: where the land remembers us" fuses botanical subjects, wildlife, waterways, abstract landscapes and imagined environments while being influenced by the diverse environment of Australia and Northern California. The exhibition will run through Sunday, September 6th, 2026.

Complementing its Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse, the San Mateo County History Museum is offering FREE walking tours throughout the Peninsula this summer. From Daly City to Pigeon Point, visit four cemeteries, a stable, six downtowns, one interesting residential area, a ranch, a dueling site, a slot machine collection, a lighthouse, and the Cow Palace.

Complementing its Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse, the San Mateo County History Museum is offering FREE walking tours throughout the Peninsula this summer. FREE Historic Walking Tours Throughout San Mateo County This Summer
Complementing its Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse, the San Mateo County History Museum is offering FREE walking tours throughout the Peninsula this summer. From Daly City to Pigeon Point, visit four cemeteries, a stable, six downtowns, one interesting residential area, a ranch, a dueling site, a slot machine collection, a lighthouse, and the Cow Palace.
Victorian Days is also a FREE event and features family activities that inform youngsters about life in the nineteenth century. It takes place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 8.

Complementing its Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse, the San Mateo County History Museum is offering FREE walking tours throughout the Peninsula this summer. On Saturdays from Sept. 5 to Oct. 3, Jack London State Historic Park’s WILD Trail Challenge returns for a third year. This series of five hikes covers every trail in the park for a total of 39.5 miles. The hikes increase in duration and/or difficulty each week. Participants can sign up for individual hikes or do them all.
The price for each hike is $15. The park entry fee of $15 per vehicle is waived for these hikes. Those who sign up for all five hikes before Sept. 5 save 20 percent and pay only $60.

About the Event
While other states slowly assimilated waves of immigrants in the 1800s, the Gold Rush produced a “Big Bang” of immigration from all over the world. A group of Chileans who embarked from Valparaiso were some of the first to arrive in San Francisco in 1849, driven by the discovery of gold. Chileans brought with them their lives, their ambitions, and, importantly, their mining expertise.
The presence and influence of Chileans inSan Francisco has been significant and ongoing. This presentation will focus on little-known events like the Chilean Wars in Northern California, which inspired the only play ever written by Chilean Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda; the connection between local icons Allen Ginsburg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the illustrious Chilean poet Fernando Alegría; the influx of Chilean exiles in the 1970s; and the works of local Chilean author Isabel Allende.

Complementing its Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse, the San Mateo County History Museum is offering FREE walking tours throughout the Peninsula this summer. From Daly City to Pigeon Point, visit four cemeteries, a stable, six downtowns, one interesting residential area, a ranch, a dueling site, a slot machine collection, a lighthouse, and the Cow Palace.
Victorian Days is also a FREE event and features family activities that inform youngsters about life in the nineteenth century. It takes place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 8.

On Saturdays from Sept. 5 to Oct. 3, Jack London State Historic Park’s WILD Trail Challenge returns for a third year. This series of five hikes covers every trail in the park for a total of 39.5 miles. The hikes increase in duration and/or difficulty each week. Participants can sign up for individual hikes or do them all.
The price for each hike is $15. The park entry fee of $15 per vehicle is waived for these hikes. Those who sign up for all five hikes before Sept. 5 save 20 percent and pay only $60.

On Saturdays from Sept. 5 to Oct. 3, Jack London State Historic Park’s WILD Trail Challenge returns for a third year. This series of five hikes covers every trail in the park for a total of 39.5 miles. The hikes increase in duration and/or difficulty each week. Participants can sign up for individual hikes or do them all.
The price for each hike is $15. The park entry fee of $15 per vehicle is waived for these hikes. Those who sign up for all five hikes before Sept. 5 save 20 percent and pay only $60.

Rancho Day Fiesta: FREE Event
On Saturday September 19 from 12 – 4 p.m. the San Mateo County Historical Association’s docents at the Sánchez Adobe present their annual Rancho Day Fiesta, a FREE family activity day. The Adobe is located at 1000 Linda Mar Boulevard in Pacifica. Take a trip back to the 1840s when Don Francisco Sánchez raised cattle for the hide-and-tallow trade at his Rancho San Pedro.
A living history event, visitors will be invited to make adobe bricks, stamp leather, dip candles, make core husk dolls, churn butter, and participate in other rancho-era activities, including learning how to dance as the early Californios did.
