Join us for a captivating journey into a forgotten chapter of San Mateo County history with underwater archaeologist Denise Jaffke, who will speak on the history of shore whaling along the California Coast on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 1 p.m.
Denise will transport you back in time to when whale spouts dotted our horizon and bustling whaling stations operated right here in San Mateo County.
Jaffke, who is a member of the California State Parks Dive Team, will draw on recent archaeological surveys conducted by California State Parks and the University of California, which has focused on the remains of the whaling stations that once operated in this region including two in San Mateo County - - one at Pigeon Point and the other at Pillar Point.
This presentation is free for museum members and is also included with museum admission. Admission can be purchased at the door the day of the event.

The evening features the beloved hallmarks of a traditional Burns Supper: the Procession of the Haggis, a spirited recitation of Address to a Haggis, traditional Scottish fare, and the classic toasts — including the Immortal Memory, celebrating Burns’ enduring influence. Manhattanville University’s Sport Knowledge Institute (SKI) is proud to present Youth Sport in America: An Evening with William Hoynes on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Manhattanville’s historic Reid Castle. The event will feature Dr. William Hoynes, Professor of Sociology at Vassar College and co-author of More Than Just a Game: How the Youth Sports Industry is Changing the Way We Parent and What to Do About It.
Following Dr. Hoynes’ book talk, he will be joined in conversation by Dr. Samantha White, Assistant Professor of Sport Studies at Manhattanville University, and Manhattanville alumna Lara Keenan ’22, ’24 MAT, Athletic Director at Mizzentop Day School, who holds a BA in Sport Studies and an MAT in Sport Pedagogy and Physical Education. Together, they will continue the conversation regarding how best to support young athletes and their families.
