The History of Chileans in San Francisco
About the Event
While other states slowly assimilated waves of immigrants in the 1800s, the Gold Rush produced a “Big Bang” of immigration from all over the world. A group of Chileans who embarked from Valparaiso were some of the first to arrive in San Francisco in 1849, driven by the discovery of gold. Chileans brought with them their lives, their ambitions, and, importantly, their mining expertise.
The presence and influence of Chileans inSan Francisco has been significant and ongoing. This presentation will focus on little-known events like the Chilean Wars in Northern California, which inspired the only play ever written by Chilean Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda; the connection between local icons Allen Ginsburg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the illustrious Chilean poet Fernando Alegría; the influx of Chilean exiles in the 1970s; and the works of local Chilean author Isabel Allende.
After the presentation, enjoy a taste of Chilean wines and traditional Chilean snacks.

Bay Area Artist Explores Identity, Resilience, and Female Experience at Art X Gallery
FREMONT, CA — Artstars Agency is proud to announce the upcoming solo exhibition by acclaimed multidisciplinary visual artist, animator, and educator Tangying (Jane) Shen. Titled Shen’s Wondering, the exhibition opens on September 10, 2026, at Art X Gallery in Fremont, California, within the San Francisco Bay Area. Running through the fall, the exhibition brings together new, never-before-seen pieces that trace the journey of self-discovery and female resilience.
Shen’s Wondering centers on a core existential question: How does a woman become herself? The exhibition's title incorporates a subtle visual play: the letter “N” separates to allow a dual reading as “She’s Wondering.” Through painting, ceramics, and interdisciplinary media, Shen explores how women are initially shaped by family, culture, and societ…

Sign up for a 30-minute slot on our website: https://ragazzi.org/join-us/audition-day/
We make auditions short, fun, low-stress, and engaging! You and your boy will meet with one of our faculty members in person at our Palo Alto location (625 Hamilton Ave. Palo Alto, CA 94301). This will be your chance to learn more about Ragazzi and ask questions. Then, we’ll give your boy the opportunity to sing a little. For younger boys, we know this is likely their first audition. There is no need to prepare anything, and we don’t expect them to have singing experience. Your child’s audition may be solo or as part of a small group depending on how many children sign up for a given time. We look forward to meeting you!

16th Annual "Caregivers Count!" Conference: From Conflict to Connection – Managing Expectations & Roles in Caregiving
If you've ever finished a hard conversation with a parent, sibling, or spouse and thought, "When did this get so complicated?" — you're not alone.
Caregiving reshuffles roles we've held our whole lives. The child becomes the decision-maker. The independent parent becomes the one who needs help. Siblings who rarely coordinated on anything are suddenly making choices together under stress. It's no wonder tension shows up. What can each person realistically give right now? These conversations feel awkward at first, but they're often the bridge from resentment back to partnership.
Connection doesn't require everyone to agree. It requires everyone to feel heard.
At our upcoming conference…

Opening Reception: Fragmented Horizons Exhibition with Rob Strati & Chris Hayman
Meet the artists behind Fragmented Horizons at the exhibition’s opening reception on Friday, September 25 from 5–7 PM at Studio Shop Gallery in Burlingame.
Strati’s work offers a particularly compelling story, as the series began when his wife accidentally broke a plate from his late mother-in-law. Instead of discarding the broken fragments, Strati kept them, eventually working to carefully match his ink drawings to the original patterns of each plate before extending the imagery onto the paper below. The resulting scenes appear to emerge from the fragments themselves, creating an unexpected dialogue between the original object and the new work.
The result is part sculpture, part drawing and part storytelling—and the process is fascinating to see up close.
Working from radically different materials and processes, Strati and Hayman arrive at a shared exploration of landscape, memory and perception. Strati begins with tangible fragments that have survived from the past, while Hayman, working primarily in oil…

San Mateo County History Makers Dinner
Celebrating Roy Brizio: A History Maker
For nearly half a century, the name Roy Brizio has been synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship, innovation and the enduring culture of the American hot rod.
Born in San Francisco in 1956, Roy grew up immersed in the world of hot rods and drag racing. His father, the late hot-rod legend Andy Brizio, taught Roy the skills of welding and fabrication and brought him along to his shop and the adjacent Champions Speed Shop. By high school, Roy was taking auto, metal and machining classes—and already owned an extraordinary ’32 Ford Coupe.
In 1977, Roy founded Roy Brizio Street Rods, beginning in a corner of Champion Speed Shop. Just two years later, he opened his own shop in South San Francisco. Through exceptional craftsmanship and a growing renaissance in the street-rod industry, Roy’s business became one of the most respected names in the world of custom cars.
Roy Brizio Street Rods has built Oakland Roadster Show winners, Hot Rod Magazine’s 50th Anniversary “T” road…

16th Annual "Caregivers Count!" Conference: You Matter Too: An Interactive Self-Care Experience
Let's be honest — "take care of yourself" can feel like one more thing on an already impossible list.
When you're managing medications, appointments, finances, and someone else's daily wellbeing, your own needs quietly slide to the bottom. You skip meals, lose sleep, cancel your own doctor's visits. It's understandable. It's also unsustainable.
Here's the truth we don't say enough: your wellbeing isn't a luxury or a reward for finishing everything else. It's the foundation that makes everything else possible. You can't pour from an empty cup — and running on empty helps no one, least of all the person you're caring for.
This session won't just tell you to rest. It's designed as an interactive experience — a chance to actually pause, breathe, and try simple practices you can carry home. We'll explore small, realistic ways to protect your energy, recognize burnout before it flattens you, and reconnect with the things that make you you beyond the caregiver role.
No guilt. No lectures. Just a supportive s…

Interpreting 250 Years Since the Anza Expedition
About the Event
This year marks the 250-year anniversary of the arrival of the Anza Expedition. In 2026, many events across the Bay Area and beyond have commemorated the arrival of the Anza expedition, which led to the founding of the Presidio and Mission Dolores. The 2026 Kevin Starr lecture will explore the legacy of the expedition and its impact, addressing crucial issues, questions, conflicts, and perspectives that have persisted in the 250 years since Anza’s arrival. A distinguished panel of community-based researchers, scholars, and museum practitioners will examine not only how we view these complex interactions and events, but also how we interpret them in practical contexts such as K-12 schools, universities, historic sites, and museums.
The lecture will take place at the University of San Francisco. An in-person wine and cheese reception will start at 5:30 P.M.
