An Old-Fashioned Fourth
This Fourth of July, step back in time and celebrate America's 250th birthday the old-fashioned way.
On Saturday, July 4, the San Mateo County History Museum invites you to An Old-Fashioned Fourth, a festive, family-friendly event running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that brings the spirit of Victorian Independence Days back to life.

Watch for the History Museum's own entry in the parade featuring gleaming carriages and early automobiles as a preview of our upcoming Taube Carriage House and Automobile Gallery.

Voyage to Paradiso— The Divine Light Party
VOYAGE TO PARADISO — The Divine Light Party is an immersive, Independence Day sunset cruise experience and the second major pop-up event of 2026 from Dante Buckley, the visionary behind Dante’s Inferno. This one-night-only celebration serves as an exclusive first look at Paradiso, the highly anticipated rooftop concept from Dante’s Inferno, ahead of its 2027 opening. Envisioned as the lighter, heavenly counterpart to Inferno, the ground-level supper club, Paradiso channels an elevated, escapist energy, blending the feel of an island getaway, a rooftop party, and a private members’ club.
While Paradiso will eventually live above Inferno, Voyage to Paradiso brings that world to life on the water, transforming The Belle, a multi-level vessel cruising the San Francisco Bay, into a floating preview of the concept. With Caribbean-inspired luxury, top tier live music, and elevated programming, the experience captures the spirit of a city in revival. A portion of ticket proceeds will benefit The Hidden Genius Projec…

Coastal Mendocino Town Celebrates Dog Mayoral Candidate
Mendocino Mayoral Voting Day is July 5, 11 AM-3 PM. In person balloting at Harvest at Mendosa’s, 10501 Lansing St. Mendocino. Bodhi, a 120-pound Giant Alaskan Malamute, is the front runner. Free water plus a benefit bake sale and celebrity dog selfies make this the place to get your bark on.
This occasion is the culmination of a months-long fundraiser for the Mendocino Dog Park which benefits from the Mayoral campaign because every $1.00 donated to the Park is a vote for Bodhi. At 2,500 votes, Bodhi is elected.
The Mendocino Dog Park, since 2021, has been welcoming locals and visitors to enjoy two beautiful fenced play areas, one for large dogs and one for small or shy pups. Both foster free-play and socialization opportunities for dogs, while helping to develop stronger community ties for “doggo parents.” The Park is located at 998 School Street on the grounds of the Community Center of Mendocino (www.communitycenterofmendocino.org).

The Visionaries Writing Contest by Inkitt
$10,000 prize & movie adaptation for the best biography of a Silicon Valley legend.
Some of the most fascinating lives of our time belong to the architects of Silicon Valley: the college dropouts, the rebels, the obsessives who rewired how we live, work, and connect.
Inkitt invites you to craft a biographical narrative inspired by a visionary of the modern era. Your story doesn't need to be a novel — it can be a short story, an interpretation, or a close-to-fact portrait of a life that shaped our world. Think The Social Network, not a Wikipedia entry. The deadline to submit is July 31, 2026 at 11:59pm.
The Grand Prize: $10,000 & a feature film adaptation.
Inkitt is looking for a compelling, cinematic biography of a real or thinly fictionalized tech founder — including their origin story, obsessions, failures, and what drove them to change everything. Biopic, founder drama, tech origin story, docudrama, and historical fiction are all welcome. Any writer, anywhere in the world, may enter.

Festival Napa Valley Presents LMR Jazz Orchestra
The LMR Jazz Orchestra returns to Festival Napa Valley with A Vanguard Legacy, a tribute to the groundbreaking Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, whose weekly performances at New York’s Village Vanguard reshaped modern big-band jazz.
The evening is led by trumpet legend Jon Faddis, who joins the orchestra as both guest conductor and featured soloist. Faddis served as lead trumpeter of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in the early 1970s beginning at just 18, bringing a direct and vibrant link to the ensemble’s storied history. Vocalist Jamie Davis appears in the celebrated baritone role long associated with Joe Williams, revisiting repertoire from the orchestra’s landmark recordings.
From the driving pulse of “Low Down” to the enduring lyricism of “A Child Is Born,” the program highlights the sophistication, swing, and daring that defined a jazz institution, and keeps its spirit very much alive.
Wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase from CIA at Copia. Outside food and beverages…

Merola Opera Program presents “La Tragédie de Carmen”
San Francisco’s acclaimed Merola Opera Program, one of the world’s most prestigious opera training programs, continues its 2026 season with “La Tragédie de Carmen.” This condensed, stark adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen, created by Peter Brook, Jean-Claude Carrière, and Marius Constant, presents the opera in a raw and psychologically intense form. Two Merola alumnae, Conductor Stephanie Rhodes Russell (’09) and Director Mo Zhou (’15), lead this production, which focuses on the gripping tension between Carmen’s insistence on absolute freedom and Don José’s obsessive control. Prioritizing emotional intensity and inevitability over spectacle, the performance unfolds as an intimate tragedy driven by desire, jealousy, and fate. La Tragédie de Carmen will be performed in French with English supertitles. This production is presented by arrangement with Boosey & Hawkes, Inc. Sole Agent in the U.S. Canada, and Mexico for Editions Salabert, a Universal Music Publishing Group company, publisher, and copyright owner.

Josh Kornbluth’s What Is To Be Done?: Fighting Fascism and Depression
For over 35 years, Josh Kornbluth has developed his monologues through a series of improvisations — often at The Marsh. What’s currently on, and in, his mind are the related subjects of fascism and depression. For over seven months last year, he was mired in a deep depression. At the same time, our country had begun rapidly descending into fascism. So Josh found himself in a Resistance on at least two levels: against MAGA’s depredations, and against attacks from within his own psyche. And the struggle continues! Can he help save our democracy even as he tries to pull himself together? Will he have to perform these improvs from a psychiatrist’s couch? What Is To Be Done? is a work in (and of) progress.

Threshold of Light, Art Exhibit Opening with Christina Kent and Lisa Fleming
Kriste Michelini Gallery Presents Threshold of Light, Featuring Works by Christina Kent and Lisa Fleming
Opening Reception Sunday July 12, 2-4pm
Kriste Michelini Gallery is pleased to present Threshold of Light, a thoughtfully curated exhibition featuring the work of San Francisco painter Christina Kent and ceramic artist Lisa Fleming. Bringing together Kent’s expressive oil paintings and Fleming’s elegant porcelain vessels, the exhibition explores light, shadow, form, and feeling.
Kent’s paintings capture the transient interplay between light and both urban and natural environments. Rooted in a practice of walking and close observation, her work reflects quiet moments found within shifting atmospheres. Her city scenes are shaped by structure, geometry, and the movement of urban life, while her landscapes open into expansive skies and softened horizons. Across both subjects, Kent’s expressive mark-making and attention to light invite viewers to pause, look closely, and experience the world with renewed sens…

Artist Reception: Akiko Suzuki, Songs of a Little Bird
Join us at NY2CA Gallery for the Artist Reception for Songs of a Little Bird, a solo exhibition by internationally recognized fiber artist Akiko Suzuki.
The Artist reception will take place Saturday, July 18 from 5–7pm and will feature Performance Art by Akiko Suzuki.
Songs of a Little Bird presents Suzuki’s richly layered textile and mixed-media works, bringing together contemporary art quilting, poetry, stitching, paint, collage, and intuitive mark-making. Her practice bridges visual art, written language, memory, and emotion, giving form to the unseen forces that shape inner experience.
As part of the exhibition, Suzuki presents HOPE DRESS, a performance and video work created in collaboration with music by Kuniyoshi Yamada and filmed at Palazzo Ferrari in Parabita, Italy during the Global Art Project residency in May 2026.
In this work, feathers are cut from a yellow dress. Participants write messages of hope onto the feathers, then sew them back onto the dress.
The gesture is simple and deeply human.…

Johnny Lonely & Joshua Raoul Brody’s The Saddest Night of Musical Entertainment in the History of the World
Johnny Lonely, matchless torch singer, is convinced that the reason his career hasn’t taken off is because his “Unhappy Hour” isn’t gloomy enough. But since his girlfriend just dumped him, tonight’s audition at “The Nowhere to Go but Up Club,” is his perfect chance to debut The Saddest Night of Musical Entertainment in the History of the World. His accompanist, Raoul, sees this as a professional dumpster fire, and sabotages Johnny’s plans by throwing in happy songs, sharing mindfulness tips and changing minor keys to major ones. Like Daffy Duck being tortured by Bugs Bunny, Johnny eventually loses his mind, which might be what his audience wanted the act to be all along.
The show incorporates both classic torch songs and original jazz and blues tunes by Johnny Lonely. An early version of this show, Johnny Lonely’s Unhappy Hour, was first performed on “Blue Mondays,” at the Paradise Lounge, in San Francisco, in 1987. Using a mixture of original songs in the vein of jazz standards with sad pop song cove…
