Few artists have shaped how the world pictures tomorrow as thoroughly as Syd Mead. For more than half a century, the self-described "visual futurist" set the vocabulary that designers, engineers, architects and filmmakers still draw on. He showed that the future could be drafted with precision rather than guessed at. That work began in industry, where Ford and U.S. Steel hired him to imagine what came next, and it reached millions through the films he helped design, among them Blade Runner, TRON and Aliens.
His gouache paintings show tomorrow with enough engineering logic to work as blueprints. But his real subject was never the machines. The 29th United Nations Association Film Festival opens Thursday, Oct. 15, at Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto, with remarks by Mayor Vickie Veenker and the presentation of a City of Palo Alto proclamation recognizing the 29th UNAFF.
Opening Night begins with the West Coast premiere of The Comfort Dogs of Uganda, directed by Australian filmmaker Richard Wainwright. The documentary follows former child soldiers in northern Uganda finding unexpected bonds with rescued village dogs.
Next is the world premiere of Last Christian in Bethlehem, from local Bay Area team and UNAFF alums, Robert Levering, Stephen Talbot, and Stephanie Mechura. This feature documentary provides interviews and footage of Palestinian Christians living in the West Bank.

About the Event
This year marks the 250-year anniversary of the arrival of the Anza Expedition. In 2026, many events across the Bay Area and beyond have commemorated the arrival of the Anza expedition, which led to the founding of the Presidio and Mission Dolores. The 2026 Kevin Starr lecture will explore the legacy of the expedition and its impact, addressing crucial issues, questions, conflicts, and perspectives that have persisted in the 250 years since Anza’s arrival. A distinguished panel of community-based researchers, scholars, and museum practitioners will examine not only how we view these complex interactions and events, but also how we interpret them in practical contexts such as K-12 schools, universities, historic sites, and museums.
The lecture will take place at the University of San Francisco. An in-person wine and cheese reception will start at 5:30 P.M.

Agarwal won first prizes at the Dutch Guitar Foundation International Guitar Competition, the Josefina P. Tuason International Guitar Competition and the Elias Barreiro International Young Artists Competition, and second prize and the audience prize at the Tokyo International Guitar Competition. A graduate of Oberlin College and Conservatory and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he is pursuing a master's degree at The Juilliard School under Sharon Isbin. He grew up in Sunnyvale.
