Together, these two programs are dedicated to supporting Black and African American students on their path to academic success, personal growth, professional success, and transfer, providing a space where scholars are seen, supported, and celebrated every step of the way.
New incoming students will be welcomed by faculty, staff, and returning students from both programs, plus take part in an engaging community activity and receive an orientation to the programs and resources available to support their academic journey.
The evening will conclude with a candlelight induction ceremony in the Board Room, where scholars are officially welcomed into the community for the 2026-2027 academic year.

AUDITION PROCESS, Auditions consist of cold readings. Auditioners are encouraged to prepare a one-minute dramatic monologue from a published stage play. ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
Gain valuable skills using appropriate resources, tools and scientific language to overcome common challenges in plant identification. Through lecture, discussions and hands-on activities, Emeritus professor Shawna Martinez will show you how to identify native plants and to see botanical relationships. You’ll practice using dichotomous keys and be trained to recognize the characteristics so you can identify the most common plant families. This series is a partnership with the Redbud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and Sierra College’s Natural History Museum.

California’s oak woodlands support birds that are so common they seem ordinary. But some species have unique physical characteristics, abilities, and behaviors that aren’t obvious to the ordinary human. Kate Marianchild, author of Secrets of the Oak Woodlands, will tell us stories of tender spousal ministrations, strange nest materials, bizarre social structures, and deceptive mimicry that will boggle our minds.
