ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
Gain valuable skills using appropriate resources, tools and scientific language to overcome common challenges in plant identification. Through lecture, discussions and hands-on activities, Emeritus professor Shawna Martinez will show you how to identify native plants and to see botanical relationships. You’ll practice using dichotomous keys and be trained to recognize the characteristics so you can identify the most common plant families. This series is a partnership with the Redbud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and Sierra College’s Natural History Museum.

Tend the Soil, Touch the Sky: Vietnamese Immigrants in Placer County (Now - July 30)
Visual and Performing Arts
Please check the Library Hours to view the art exhibit since the library hours vary. If you visit in person, please push the blue button on the exhibit so your visit will be counted. Tend the Soil, Touch the Sky: Vietnamese Immigrants in Placer County is a photo and video exhibit dedicated to capturing the faces, voices, and experiences of Vietnamese refugees and immigrants in our local Placer County area 50 years after the end of the Vietnam War.

Honors students from various disciplines, such as Ethnic Studies, History, English as a Second Language (ESL), Graphic Design, and Building Industries, have worked together to collectively create the exhibition in celebration of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Month.
The exhibit is generously supported by the Sierra College Foundation (SCF) and the American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) Collaborative Grant.

These workshops include a brief discussion on financial aid and other need-to-know information, a quick walk-through of the UC application, helpful tips and tricks, and a lab portion for questions and individual assistance.
Recommended for students that have not started (or just started) their UC application. Reservations are not required but strongly encouraged. Seating is LIMITED and first come-first served. California’s oak woodlands support birds that are so common they seem ordinary. But some species have unique physical characteristics, abilities, and behaviors that aren’t obvious to the ordinary human. Kate Marianchild, author of Secrets of the Oak Woodlands, will tell us stories of tender spousal ministrations, strange nest materials, bizarre social structures, and deceptive mimicry that will boggle our minds. At the end of her talk, she’ll turn the audience into a chorus of frogs as she tells a story with an astonishing punch line. Register Online.
