Sierra College Patrons Speaker Series: An Evening with Author Gary Noy

Speakers Gary Noy will offer an illustrated talk on 19th century Lake Tahoe based upon material from his 2024 book Gem of the Sierra: Schemes and Splendor in 19th Century Lake Tahoe. The presentation will feature tales of interesting individuals and events. Many historical photographs and images of Lake Tahoe will be shown and focus on such themes as the Native population; weather; lodging and tourism; various forms of transportation; the Comstock Lode Silver Rush; population trends; water policy and infrastructure; logging; and the story of how Lake Tahoe got its name. Additionally, Noy’s address will consider some Lake Tahoe mythology and read selections from 19th century Lake Tahoe literature. The Gem of the Sierra book will be available for sale. Eyes of Freedom: A Memorial Art Exhibit

Student Life The Eyes of Freedom is a traveling memorial featuring eight life-sized paintings of the 23 fallen Marines and one Navy Corpsman of Lima Company, who died in Iraq in 2005.  Each portrait is accompanied by a pair of the service member's combat boots and a candle, symbolizing their spirit. The exhibit, created by artist Anita Miller, also includes the "Silent Battle" sculpture, raising awareness for veterans' struggles with post-traumatic stress and survivor guilt.  The memorial honors the sacrifice of Lima Company and extends to all who have answered the nation's call to service.
