STORY: The play takes place on Labor Day weekend in the joint backyards of two widows. One house belongs to Flo Owens, who lives there with her two daughters, Madge and Millie, and a schoolteacher boarder. The other house belongs to Helen Potts, who lives with her elderly and invalid mother. When a young man named Hal Carter takes a shine to Madge, their sudden passion for each other disrupts the ordinariness of the houses’ routines, causing long-dormant desires to explode with ramifications of love and heartbreak that no one expects.

What’s in a Name? tells the story of a unique collaboration between paleontologist Dr. Dave Lovelace (University of Wisconsin–Madison) and the Wind River Reservation community that led to the naming of three new fossil taxa through a multi-generational partnership with tribal Elders and students.
The film invites us to reconsider long-standing colonial practices in science — particularly in how species are named — and challenges us to think more deeply about equity, inclusion, and shared knowledge in the geosciences.
Following the screening, we will host a discussion with director Ethan Parrish, who will share behind-the-scenes insights and engage in conversation with attendees.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
Gain valuable skills using appropriate resources, tools and scientific language to overcome common challenges in plant identification. Through lecture, discussions and hands-on activities, Emeritus professor Shawna Martinez will show you how to identify native plants and to see botanical relationships. You’ll practice using dichotomous keys and be trained to recognize the characteristics so you can identify the most common plant families. This series is a partnership with the Redbud Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and Sierra College’s Natural History Museum.

This special chemical reaction allows living things to produce light in their bodies, from the ocean's depths to forests, which they use for communication, attracting prey, finding mates, and defense.
