10th Annual Secondary Transition Symposium: Empowering Pathways, Tuesday, March 25, 2025
The Connecticut Secondary Transition Symposium brings students and their families together with educators and other professionals to improve secondary transition programming and services for students with disabilities.
The 10th Annual Secondary Transition Symposium will build the capacity of educators and other professionals, in partnership with middle and high school students with disabilities and their families, to help ensure successful postsecondary outcomes. There will be a variety of presentations for families, youth, and professionals.
The symposium is one full-day, in-person session. The event is hosted by the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE), and the State Education Resource Center (SERC). Understanding Disproportionality in School Discipline Series - Day 3
Schools across the United States and in Connecticut often report higher suspensions, expulsions, and other punitive consequences for certain groups of students. In this three-day professional learning series, teachers will better understand their role in creating inclusive classroom environments for all learners. These sessions will encourage self-reflection for participants to better understand their approach to managing and addressing the day-to-day behavioral expectations and routines that will ensure consistent and compassionate responses school-wide. The series covers defining implicit bias, understanding its negative effects on educators and their students, and understanding a developmental approach to talk about race in the classroom using case scenarios.

The session will explore belonging, delving deeper than physical presence in a school to celebrating identities, establishing meaningful connections between and among students and educators, and creating the felt experience of being valued and mattering. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support for Behavior - Day 6
Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a framework for implementing a continuum of academic and social-emotional and behavioral supports to meet students’ needs and enhance opportunities for achievement while reducing exclusionary school discipline practices that have a disproportionately adverse effect on students with disabilities, students of color, and low-income students. Understanding Drivers of Chronic Stress and Burnout and What Can Be Done
Chronic stress among educators is a primary factor underlying absences, burnout, and turnover. Participants will delve into the complexities of stress, chronic stress, and burnout, including impacts and various drivers. In this session, focus will be on recognizing and understanding related emotions such as anxiety, frustration, guilt, and others, to give language and a framework for educators to examine their feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and experiences. This session will examine the unique challenges faced by educators of color and marginalized identities and how these factors contribute to stress and burnout. Tools and resources will be provided on individual strategies and practices as well as systems approaches to support greater well-being.

Designing for Belonging to Strengthen School Communities - Day 3
The session will explore belonging, delving deeper than physical presence in a school to celebrating identities, establishing meaningful connections between and among students and educators, and creating the felt experience of being valued and mattering. Participants will understand common barriers to belonging and analyze potentially unique challenges within their respective school communities. The session will equip educators with practical, evidenced-based tools and practices to strengthen their school communities. Time will be dedicated to group discussions or brainstorming sessions.
