Destination Westport: Saugatuck Stories

Explore the Hidden Stories of Saugatuck! Join us for a fascinating one-mile walking tour through Saugatuck, located at the mouth of the Saugatuck River and Long Island Sound. Discover the area’s rich history, from pre-colonial times to the early 20th century, including stories of commerce, the Atlantic trade, and the immigrant and women’s experiences that shaped the town. History Through a Lens Workshop

History Through a Lens Workshop for 5th - 8th graders. This 3-class workshop is being held on three Saturdays: August 23, September 13, and September 27 from 10 am- 11:30 am. The class is taught by Kira Joshi and Samantha Fargione at the Weston History & Culture Center- 104 Weston Rd, Weston, CT. Over the course of three classes, students will dive into photographs from the Weston History & Culture Center archives and uncover the stories they tell. Students will also have the opportunity to become the storytellers by learning how to capture powerful images that express their unique perspectives of the world around them. No prior experience is required. Bring a camera or smartphone to capture photos. If you don’t have one, let us know, and we will provide one to share. In conjunction with Tod Papageorge: At the Beach + In the Pool: On Influence, we invite you for an evening of classical portrait-making with artist and photographer Lewis Derogene. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore how to channel the elegance and drama of Baroque paintings into your own portrait photography. We’ll begin with a quick look at masterworks by painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt to better understand techniques—like chiaroscuro—that defined the era. Then, we’ll dive into how those same effects can be recreated through lighting, composition, and set design. Bring your camera or smartphone + bring a partner too, as you’ll be photographing each other! EMT Certification Class

Our Emergency Medical Technician class provides students with the skills to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care for those who are sick or injured. The program meets State of Connecticut guidelines for EMT certification upon successful completion of exams. Once certified, students are eligible to volunteer with Westport EMS alongside our EMS ambulance crews. All students must complete and pass their classroom final written & practical exam, and then will be responsible to complete and pass the State of Connecticut written & practical exam at an approved State testing center. Community Volunteer Day

The sanctuary needs your help! As the largest open space in Westport, the 63-acre wildlife sanctuary at Earthplace is a vital hub for local biodiversity and education. We are asking our community to join us in caring for the land by removing invasive plant species and tending to the trails. Bring your neighbor and come down to Earthplace for our Community Volunteer Day. We’ll fuel up with coffee and tea, mingle, and enter the volunteer raffle before hitting the trails at 10:15. Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR) is an evidence-based training for the general public (ages 16+). We encourage everyone to receive the training! Learn how to reach out to someone who may be struggling and provide life-saving support. The training includes videos, a slideshow, and a group role play. Free First Saturdays

First Saturdays are a great opportunity to experience what we have to offer at the Westport Museum free of charge on the first Saturday of each month. Free QPR Suicide Prevention Training

Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR) is an evidence-based training for the general public (ages 16+). We encourage everyone to receive the training! Learn how to reach out to someone who may be struggling and provide life-saving support. The training includes videos, a slideshow, and a group role play. For 2025, we are offering this training for free bimonthly on last Fridays from 12-1:30pm. Please note that at least 5 attendees are required for a training to take place. We also ask you not to attend any suicide prevention training if you have been personally affected by suicide in the past 6 months. We offer QPR group trainings to organizations in our catchment area upon request (English or Spanish), as well as other training programs.
