Join us for a curator tour of the special exhibition Striking Objects: Contemporary Japanese Metalwork led by Sol Jung, the museum's Shirley Z. Johnson Assistant Curator of Japanese Art. Experience the striking beauty of hammered Japanese metalwork, learn about traditional metalworking techniques that have been passed down and practiced over generations, and view vessels that combine Japanese heritage with creativity and innovation. The exhibition highlights hammered metalworks from the collection of Shirley Z. Johnson (1940–2021), distinguished lawyer, philanthropist, and former board member of the National Museum of Asian Art. Her passion for contemporary Japanese metalwork and her visionary gift have made our museum home to the largest collection of such works in the United States.

To celebrate the special exhibition Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change, the National Museum of Asian Art in partnership with Art to Go-Go (powered by the Anacostia Business Improvement District) and the 11th Street Bridge Park, a project of the Ward 8 nonprofit Building Bridges Across the River, will host a pop-up market featuring small businesses located east of the Anacostia River. Connect and shop with local creators and entrepreneurs and learn more about DC’s Arts and Culture District in historic Anacostia.

Join us for a curator tour of the exhibition The Art of Knowing in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas led by Emma Natalya Stein, the museum’s assistant curator of South Asian and Southeast Asian art. Experience highlights from our collections on religious and practical knowledge across time, space, and cultures. Featuring stone sculptures, gilt bronzes, and painted manuscripts from India, Nepal, Tibet, Bangladesh, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia, this exhibition illuminates the critical role of visual culture in conveying Buddhist and Hindu teachings from the ninth to the twentieth centuries.
