“and yet we co-exist”
Grand Bohemian Gallery will host “and yet we co-exist” exhibition by Taylor and Connor Robinson in September.
Local artists Taylor and Connor Robinson handcraft textured sculptural paintings and reliefs under their trade name Visceral Home. Their work is textural, compositions grown from experimentation using contrasting natural earth compounds and unnatural elements to represent the complexities of mental health and addiction disorders.
The art they create is a meditative process, a personal reflective journey. While healing parts of themselves they aim to inspire vulnerability in the viewer. The artists intend to help destigmatize mental health by pairing vulnerable written autobiographies alongside viscerally evocative art. Every painting has been cared for and thought of as a singular soulful entity, treated as their own unique being, story being told, and personality. Their artwork and process focus on a personal promise, a deeply felt commitment that they cannot create without helping others create a…

“The Loveliest of Trees” by Tamara Garvey and Bridgette Martin
Grand Bohemian Gallery will host a dual show, “The Loveliest of Trees,” by Tamara Garvey and Bridgette Martin in September. The exhibition runs from September 1st to 30th, 2023.
Here’s info on each of the artists:
Tamara Garvey is a fine artist and illustrator based out of Savannah, Georgia. She creates whimsical, cheerful artwork that frequently incorporates trees, “as they’re so fun to depict with pen-and-ink. Birch trees in particular are full of textures and quirks, and endless varieties of shapes, so I never get tired of painting them”. The Burglar pieces shown with this exhibition are part of a whole series of “old-timey burglars hightailing it up birch trees with their stolen loot” – there is a different whimsical, absurd object in each painting. Garvey graduated from SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) in 2008 with a B.F.A. in illustration, and after 7 years in NYC, now works as a full-time artist in Savannah. She’s proud to have been awarded 1st Place Mixed Media at the Society of Bluffton Arti…

The International African American Museum (IAAM) will host “When It Rains It Shines,” a special exhibition by Fletcher Williams III. The exhibition will open on Thursday, August 31st and will be on display through December 3rd, 2023.
In “When It Rains It Shines,” Williams constructs a labyrinth of personal memories, rituals, and sacred hideaways using sculpture, sound, and light. It is both a dreamscape and a psychedelic vision of what it is to be in and of the South.
An opening reception, hosted by IAAM, will be held on Wednesday, August 30th, from 7 pm to 9 pm. This reception is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Those interested in attending can register here, or at iaamuseum.org/events.
On October 11th, 2023, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, the public is invited to join Williams at IAAM as he discusses his journey and the myriad personal and cultural landscapes that inform his first solo museum exhibition. Williams will be in conversation with award-winning journalist, art critic, and…

Flight Demonstration
Flight Demonstration - Thursday & Saturday morning at 10:30 am
(This one is weekly forever.)
The Center has reopened its doors to visitors to explore the interesting and important world of raptors through an outdoor program, flight demonstration and a virtually guided tour. Through natural history discussion and observation of flight techniques and hunting styles, visitors come to a better understanding of these majestic creatures and the significant role they play as apex avian predators.
During our initial phase to reopen to the public we will be limiting these programs to 50 people every Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 am.
The program and flight demonstration is often cited as the highlight of a visitor’s experience at the Center. Watch hawks, falcons, owls, eagles, kites, and vultures soar above the flying field. Seeing these birds perform their natural flying and hunting techniques provides a fascinating insight into their unique evolutionary adaptations. The natural behavior of raptors soaring,…

“When the Land Meets the Body”
The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston School of the Arts has announced “When the Land Meets the Body” by renowned artist La Vaughn Belle, on display beginning August 25th until December 9th.
In this exhibition, multidisciplinary artist La Vaughn Belle seeks to explore the relationship of history, land, and the bodies between them, and considers that who we are is a product of historical processes that are often represented in the landscape. When the Land Meets the Body will present a selection of existing and new works inspired by the Lowcountry landscape. This work includes Belle’s How to Imagine the Tropicalia as Monumental which features large-scale paintings that piece together cut, torn, and burned paper to create cartographies of shifting landscapes and seascapes, as well as a new video installation in which Belle explores the history of the marshes and swamps of Charleston, and how they have been impacted by labor of the enslaved and their attempts at freedom. The Governor’s House Inn was built in 1760 and was the home of Edward Rutledge, one of this country’s founding fathers. Rutledge, who was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, hosted many dignitaries during his time there, including George Washington. Also, born in this the house (in 1782) was Edward’s daughter, Sarah, who would go on to write the very first published cookbook in Charleston’s history, “The Carolina Housewife.”

SAT . SEP 30 , 2023
DOORS: 7:00PM / SHOW: 8:00PM
$25 - $30
Husband and wife duo, Woody Platt and Shannon Whitworth of Brevard, North Carolina, each have a unique history of musical accomplishments. A silver lining of the global pandemic has been more time at home, which has allowed them to play, write, record and perform together. They have curated a set of music comprised mostly of Whitworth’s original songs.
Shannon Whitworth’s swoon-inducing musical style found its first showcase in her Asheville-produced solo debut, 2007’s No Expectations. Followed by 2009’s critically-acclaimed Water Bound, an album that drew comparisons to Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball. Whitworth is a songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist. She has garnered praise in outlets ranging from People magazine to Garden & Gun. Her honest reinterpretation of ‘Americana,’ a la Mark Knopfler meets Norah Jones and the ghost of Julie London, has garnered Whitworth prime appearances from Philadelphia Folk…

Mike Hebb, a chef and a culinary historian, is the operator of the Historic Charleston Supper Club. He offers a five-course tasting menu where each of the first three courses focuses on a specific period of Charleston’s food history: Colonial, Antebellum, and Reconstruction. DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS
w/ Special Guest AMERICAN AQUARIUM
WED . OCT 4 , 2023
DOORS: 7:00PM / SHOW: 8:00PM
$35 - $50
On the title track to Welcome 2 Club XIII, Drive-By Truckers pay homage to the Muscle Shoals
honky-tonk where founding members Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley got their start: a

a Wednesday night or let us open for a hair-metal band we were a terrible fit for, and everyone
would hang out outside until we were done playing. It wasn’t very funny at the time, but it’s funny
to us now.” The 14th studio album from Drive-By Truckers—whose lineup also includes
keyboardist/guitarist Jay Gonzalez, bassist Matt Patton, and drummer Brad Morga…
