The collected items are deconstructed to show the remnants of what remains, giving the viewer a range of tactile and two- dimensional objects to explore their own journey of memory and the human spirit. The exhibit will run until March 8, 2023, with a reception on January 19, 2023 from 6-8pm. The perfect combination of art and history, “Letters to My Mother” is a beautiful and moving collection of envelopes, each of which, has intricately drawn images detailing the war by a young artist turned soldier. Rudie L. Wakefield was an only child, who used his art skills to illustrate WWI on the letter envelopes he would send to his mother during the war. There are 47 intricately drawn envelopes, and one double sided letter, dated from 1917 through 1918. Although Rudie’s young life was cut short after his return from the war due to the effects of gas poisoning, we can celebrate his art and his story through this exhibition of his amazing work. Kristine Hanson: Evidence of Things Unseen curated by Shelby Corso Exhibit dates: February 3 – March 18, 2023 Opening reception: Friday February 3, 5:00 - 8:00PM Evidence of Things Unseen, merges both black and white silver gelatin images with two- and three- dimensional mediums to expand the dialogue of the work. The convergence of dispirit elements; fiber arts, sculpture and black and white photography seen here is the origin of who Hanson is as an artist.  To express her unique point of view, she has incorporated found objects and ephemera, as well as black and white photography into three-dimensional objects. The collected items are deconstructed to show the remnants of what remains, giving the viewer a range of tactile and two- dimensional objects to explore their own journey of memory and the human spirit. Slave Patrols and the Charleston Workhouse in Drayton Documents

In this donate-what-you-can webinar, Curator Amber Satterthwaite will use Charles Drayton’s diaries and other historic documents to introduce you to some of the courageous individuals who risked everything by trying to reach their freedom, the consequences some of them faced, and the determination of men and women who continued to resist enslavement. Freedom seekers in South Carolina faced many dangers. From laws seeking to control their movement and access to resources to the perils of living on one’s own in the wild, attempting to self-emancipate was an undertaking in which a person risked everything—including their life. Patrollers monitored the countryside in search of enslaved people who had left their homes, using violence and force to control populations, and punishments in the Charleston Workhouse often awaited those who were found. The Rising Suns

The Rising Suns is a men’s circle. We gather weekly to share our life stories, challenges, dramas, and traumas in a supportive and judgment-free space. This is authentic men’s work in which we learn to accept ourselves fully. We embrace the whole masculine, giving voice to our thoughts, feelings, and impulses instead of repressing them. We express our personalities and celebrate our unique styles, gifts, and talents. Often, guys are conditioned with “be a man!” and “don’t talk about it,” which pushes us into emotional isolation. Many men go through life without ever talking about what’s happening or how they feel. This can result in a pressure buildup that often results in burnout, blow up, or meltdown. This group was created in response to this need: for brotherhood, for community, and for brave men to gather in times of increasing social volatility. We do not discuss the details of what’s shared in the circle. Confidentiality is a primary value. In this gathering, we connect with our inner power and emb… Event Type: Meeting. "Can’t Buy Me Love"

34 West Theater’s 9th season downtown begins on January 27th with the ‘80s musical-comedy Can’t Buy Me Love, written by actors-owners Jeff Querin and Stephen Wayne. “It’s inspired by the movies Working Girl, Pretty in Pink and Brewster’s Millions,” said Wayne, who is also featured in the comedy. In order to win an inheritance, a career-driven executive must get married in three days. “It’s sentimental, outrageous, and filled with those loveable, melodramatic supporting characters we love from ’80’s movies,” Wayne added. The troupe hosts performances Thursday through Saturday at 8 pm, where audiences can get a local beer or coke float before the show. “Not gonna lie, half the fun is enjoying a nice glass of wine and M&M’s during the performance,” said Wayne. “Because of the intimacy of our venue, it really is a great date night.” This year, 34 West will introduce Charleston to three new musical-comedies including, Can’t Buy Me Love running January t0 April, their summer disco-infused musical I’m Still St… Event Type: Theater. Creative Mornings Charleston: Louise Rakers, Nordic Cooking

Nordic Cooking is a concept that has been under the works for years. I have traveled the world studying what other cultures eat and how they nourish their eco system - both for their family and the environment. It is safe to say we all do it differently. I moved to America in 2018 from Spain where I had my own company doing plant-based workshops for kids and teens. I started studying the American food culture and paying attention to what the people were saying and asking for. The convenience was one thing: It is too much work starting to cook from scratch daily. But at the same time I felt the desire to learn and try new things was extremely present. That is why I started Nordic Cooking. To do culinary classes with focus on “less is more” and to do events that would blow anyone away, but at the same time support the environment. We know how to find the best options. All from sustainable balloons to wine. We use the best local vendors on hand for all of our veggies and fruits. We collaborate with local resta… Event Type: Lecture/Discussion. Meeting. Networking. Food and Drinks. Friday, February 10, 2023, 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM. Conversations with a Curator: Sea Grass Baskets with Curator of Archaeology Martha Zierden and Curator of History Chad Stewart

Join Curator of History, Chad Stewart, and Curator of Historical Archaeology, Martha Zierden, in the Lowcountry History Hall as they discuss sea grass baskets in the collections of The Charleston Museum. Rooted in Africa, coiled baskets of rush, sweetgrass, palmetto, and other local materials have been produced by local African Americans since their first arrival in Carolina. The art form evolved from work baskets, principally fanners for threshing rice to an art form produced for sale. The craft endures as an icon of Gullah culture. The History collection includes baskets from the early 19th century, while archaeological excavations have produced the oldest known basket fragment, dating to the late 18th century. Together, they document the long history of this beautiful and durable craft. Conversations with a Curator allows visitors a chance to have an in-depth look at an object or exhibit in the Museum galleries, ask questions and spark conversations. The Charleston Museum’s collections are both extraordin… Event Type: Lecture/Discussion. Other. Friday, February 10, 2023, 10:30 AM – 11:00 AM. Charleston Museum. “Only Once in the Light,” joint exhibition from Leigh Sabisch and Allison Koch (Sardine Press)

Redux Contemporary Art Center will next month present “Only Once in the Light,” a joint exhibition from Charleston based artists Leigh Sabisch and Allison Koch, exhibiting as Sardine Press. Redux says this new exhibition “showcases the ongoing creative endeavors of the artists in their personal practices and as a pair, who merge their energetic & multidisciplinary approach by combining oil painting and printmaking techniques that evolve into truly collaborative work.” The artists state: “As a team, we have found a way to incorporate the practices and themes of our individual work into a larger scope of collaborative making. As printmakers, we want to push our understanding of such a traditional medium as well as investigate how we can adapt to challenges we face through creating experimental pieces.” “Only Once in the Light” is the result of the pair looking back on previous bodies of work and noting how they individually incorporate the effects of light. Their varying perceptions of light opened both arti… Event Type: Arts and Culture. Friday, February 10, 2023, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Redux Contemporary Art Center, 1056 King Street, Charleston, SC. "Kristine Hanson: Evidence of Things Unseen"

"The Mountaintop"

Much has been said and documented about the legacy of the late, heroic Martin Luther King Jr. and his monumental fight for civil rights in America in the 1960’s. But in playwright Katori Hall’s award-winning play The Mountaintop, a fictionalized conversation with a maid at the Lorraine Motel exposes the person behind the legacy and how sometimes a great man is also simply a human being.  The night before his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr. returns to the Lorraine Motel after having delivered his last impassioned speech ‘I’ve Been to the Mountaintop’. A mysterious maid (Camae) delivers his room service, though she seems to have more on her agenda than a simple meal. As their conversation progresses, true intentions come to light in a story written to humanize Dr. King, to help us understand that you don’t have to be superhuman to be a hero.
