Beyond the Headlines: County Fees Draw Legal Fight

After the state Supreme Court ruled two Greenville County fees invalid in June, governments across the state reviewed similar fees to assess whether they might be impacted by the ruling. Some scrapped fees while others decided their fees were proper. But several lawsuits have now been filed around the state seeking refunds, and the latest - a $330 million suit filed Oct. 20 - brings the issue back around to Greenville County. Reporter Nathaniel Cary has covered the story from its beginning and will talk about what led to this point, what it means, and what happens next. Moderated by The Post and Courier Greenville's Managing Editor Ryan Gilchrest. Send in your questions and RSVP today.  The event is free, but you must RSVP to receive the Zoom link.  Once registered, you will have the opportunity to submit questions. CONSUMPTION

A one-day immersive exhibition. About this event STATEMENT We are not created to consume. Where there is consumption, there is disconnect. There is ruin. There is chaos. Where there is consumption, there can be no curiosity. Without curiosity, creativity is dead. Without creativity, our world cannot sustain. Consuming is not the essence of who we are. Our addictive culture allows us to forfeit our power, to substitute the vulnerability of creation for passivity. Our ancestors were not consumers. Their mere existence depended on the constant flow of problem solving and innovation. They built fire in an ice age, with creativity as their life force. As human beings, creating is an integral part of who we are. The choice is one we make again and again. What’s beneath the sugar-coated surface of our consumption? Event Type: Arts and Culture. Other. Thursday, October 28, 2021, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Charleston Union Station, 652A King Street, Charleston, SC. For more info visit www.eventbrite.com.

Charleston Symphony Orchestra Presents Beethoven and Witches

Recognized as the leading opera composer of his time, the prolific Gioachino Rossini wrote The Silken Staircase at age 20. The comedic opera, though very popular in its day, is not performed as often as are his The Barber of Seville or William Tell. However, The Silken Staircase Overture stands the test of time as a masterpiece punctuated by lively banter between the strings and the upper woodwinds. The concerto is often associated with Beethoven maneuvering away from his more Mozart-influenced earlier piano concertos to develop his own style. Indeed, it is a wonderful display of the dramatic musicality that we have come to know as quintessentially Beethoven.  In The First Walpurgis Night, Felix Mendelssohn reimagines a spooky yet comic tale with building momentum. With ghosts, witches, owls, pitchforks, and the devil this work is per… Event Type: Concert. Music. Friday, October 29, 2021, 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM. Gaillard Center, 95 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC.
