Film Screening of Landfall directed by Cecilia Aldarondo
Film Screening of Landfall directed by Cecilia Aldarondo
Hosted by Professor Mariya Vlasova
6:30 PM Humanities 202
Through shard-like glimpses of everyday life in post-Hurricane María Puerto Rico, LANDFALL is a cautionary tale for our times. Set against the backdrop of protests that toppled the US colony's governor in 2019, the film offers a prismatic portrait of collective trauma and resistance. While the devastation of María attracted a great deal of media coverage, the world has paid far less attention to the storm that preceded it: a 72-billion-dollar debt crisis crippling Puerto Rico well before the winds and waters hit. LANDFALL examines the kinship of these two storms-one environmental, the other economic-juxtaposing competing utopian visions of recovery. Featuring intimate encounters with Puerto Ricans as well as the newcomers flooding the island, LANDFALL reflects on a question of contemporary global relevance: when the world falls apart, who do we become?

Hosted by Professor Mariya Vlasova 6:30 PM
Humanities 201
Memories of a Penitent Heart is an American documentary film that premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. Written and directed by Cecilia Aldarondo, the film follows her personal journey to learn more about her late uncle, Miguel Dieppa, an aspiring actor and playwright who died of an AIDS-related illness when she was just six years old, having met him only once. The project began when Aldarondo received a box of old family home videos from her mother, which included rare footage of Miguel. Curious about his life and the circumstances surrounding his death, she began a search for his former partner, known only to her as Robert. She ultimately locates him, now a Roman Catholic priest under the name Father Aquin. Through interviews with Aquin, family members, and friends, Aldarondo unravels a deeply emotional story marked by love, secrecy, and religious conflict, particula…

You Were My First Boyfriend directed by Cecilia Aldarondo
You Were My First Boyfriend directed by Cecilia Aldarondo
Hosted by Professor Vlasova
1:00 PM - Humanities 202
What if you could rewrite your adolescence? In this high school reunion movie turned inside out, filmmaker Aldarondo embarks on a fantastical quest to reconcile her tortured teen years. She revisits some of her most formative -- and at times cringeworthy -- childhood experiences, tracking down old crushes and reenacting visceral memories of youthful humiliation and desire, at times playing the role of her younger self and casting teenagers to play the kids in her life who still haunt her. Oscillating between present and past, humor and heartbreak, YOU WERE MY FIRST BOYFRIEND is a hybrid documentary that takes seriously the power of adolescence and the way time impacts memories, exploring what it means to grow up and make peace with the drama of our teenage trauma.
