Cancer often makes people feel alone. This in person group offers a safe and compassionate space where individuals affected by cancer can share experiences, emotions, and encouragement. Conversation will include emotional support, practical advice, and connection with others who understand the challenges of diagnosis and treatment. Through open discussion and shared experiences participants can find a sense of community.

Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. Each year, approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke, and the average time for recovery is two years.
The value of social support in stroke recovery has been validated in recent studies, according the American Stroke Association. Feelings of depression and isolation are eased by participating in a support group, and equally important, the support groups often challenge participants “to get beyond their doctor-imposed, therapist-imposed, family-imposed, and self-imposed limitations.”

Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States. Each year, approximately 795,000 people suffer a stroke, and the average time for recovery is two years.
The value of social support in stroke recovery has been validated in recent studies, according the American Stroke Association. Feelings of depression and isolation are eased by participating in a support group, and equally important, the support groups often challenge participants “to get beyond their doctor-imposed, therapist-imposed, family-imposed, and self-imposed limitations.”

Props and modifications are recommended to allow students to adapt the practice to their needs. The Cancer Center at UM Shore Regional Health has partnerships with a network of community partners, including the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Cancer Care, the American Cancer Society, the Chesapeake Multiple Myeloma Network (CMMN) and other organizations to offer classes, support groups and other resources for cancer patients and their caregivers. These resources specifically help cancer patients and their families to overcome various obstacles and lessen the financial, legal and emotional burdens of cancer. Services include counseling, advocacy, assistance with financial needs, in-home assistance and medical equipment and supplies. This group is led by Chrissy Nelson.

Gentle Yoga for Cancer

We are excited to announce that our in-person yoga is back! Gentle Yoga provided by Kaufman Cancer Center, Cancer LifeNet. Your participation is free of charge and will not be billed to your insurance company.
Through therapeutic yoga, participants will use a combination of gentle movements, breathing practices and guided relaxation to support restorative posture, assist with fatigue, pain and stress.

Virtual Gentle Yoga for Cancer

This class is for all-levels and guides students through a gentle practice of yoga flow that is moderately-paced to help strengthen the immune system, reduce the impact of treatment-related side effects, and balance the mind when we need it most. Props and modifications are recommended to allow students to adapt the practice to their needs. The instructors will provide suggestions for use of common household items as props if you do not have them. Patients in active treatment (with their doctor's approval) and survivors are welcome.
