Animals, however, that not only live but perceive, present a great multiformity of pacts, and this diversity is greater in some animals than in others, being most varied in those to whose share has fallen not mere life but life of high degree. Now such an animal is man." This quote, attributed to Aristotle, is the way most of us think of plants; dull immobile creatures, certainly far less interesting than animals. That view has been forcefully overthrown in recent years by a large body of research that has shown that plants are far from being passive creatures but have adapted complex strategies to cope with the world around them. City Nature Challenge 2026

The City Nature Challenge is an international effort for people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities. It's an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities collaborate to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. Women in Florida Field Botany: 1873-1972 with Alan Franck - Palm Beach County FNPS - Chapter Meeting - CONSERVATION GROUP

“Women in Florida Field Botany: 1873-1972” People like Alvan W. Chapman and John K. Small figure prominently in early Florida botany. Overlooked are many women who made significant contributions in Florida field botany, such as Mary C. Reynolds, Eleanor Scull, Lucia McCulloch, Mary F. Baker, Lillian Arnold, Mary Agnes Chase, Helen Butts Correll, Ruth Schornherst Breen, Olga Lakela, etc. This talk will explore some of this history. On Alan Franck: Alan is a botanist and educator at the University of Florida herbarium, within the Florida Museum of Natural History located in Gainesville, Florida. Previously, he worked at Florida International University in Miami, studying the local flora and funga. He has also served as the director of the University of South Florida herbarium, which has a heavy concentration on the flora of Florida. He received his Ph.D. from the University of South Florida, where his dissertation studied the systematics of a rare cactus (Harrisia) in Florida and the Caribbean.
