Admissions Open House Programs This popular event brings many students and their families to our campus for a full overview of what UT has to offer. Lectores In the historic cigar factories of Tampa and Ybor City, lectores de tabaqueres were men who read aloud to the workers as they rolled cigars. UT’s MFA in Creative Writing program named its Lectores series in honor of this connection between literature and the city’s history. Each January and June, the program hosts celebrated visiting writers, poets, editors, screenwriters, and other artists who give public performances from their works. Lectores Initially associated with the New Weird literary genre, Jeff VanderMeer crossed over into mainstream success with his bestselling Southern Reach Trilogy, which Stephen King called “creepy and fascinating.” The trilogy's first novel, Annihilation, won the Nebula and Shirley Jackson Awards, and was adapted into a Hollywood film by director Alex Garland. VanderMeer has been called "one of the most remarkable practitioners of the literary fantastic in America today,” with The New Yorker naming him the "King of Weird Fiction." His work is noted for eluding genre classifications even as it employs themes and elements from a variety of subgenres, including ecofiction and post-pocalyptic fiction. Lectores Public Reading Series: Fernanda Santos

Lectores Fernanda Santos’ The Fire Line: The Story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots won the Western Writers of America 2017 Spur Award for Best First Nonfiction Book. The Fire Line tells the story of 19 firefighters killed in the Yarnell Hill Fire on June 30, 2013, all of them members of the same team, the Granite Mountain Hotshots. It was the largest loss of firefighters since the 9/11 attacks and the largest loss of forest firefighters in nearly a century. Santos has written in English and Portuguese for newspapers and magazines in the United States and Brazil. Lectores May-lee Chai’s Useful Phrase for Immigrants was a 2019 American Book Award winner. The Washington Post called the short story collection “immersive and complex.” Foreward Reviews declared it “devastating and graceful in equal turns.” Chai is also the author of three novels, My Lucky Face, Dragon Chica and Tiger Girl, as well as a novella and two memoirs, The Girl from Purple Mountain (co-authored with her father, Winberg Chai) and Hapa Girl. CAL in Conversation: Gregory Siff

College of Arts and Letters Gregory Siff is a noted visual artist, opera singer, experimental film maker, voice artist, and actor. His artwork has been commissioned or installed by Mercedes Benz, Standard Hotels, Vans, Red Bull and Warner Brother records to name just a few. He was selected by Vans to be an “art ambassador,” and collaborated with fashion house Saint Laurent to bring his work to their Winter 2017 YSL ready-to-wear lines. Controversies In Communication: Communication, Media and Celebrity Culture

College of Arts and Letters CONTROVERSIES IN COMMUNICATION This monthly lecture series, open to the public and aimed at older adults in the greater Tampa Bay community, will examine contemporary controversies in communication through their historical antecedents, ethical implications and technological applications. Each lecture will pair a communication scholar with an upper-level communication, media and culture major who will lead a participatory "tips and tricks" segment at the end of the lecture. We Are What We Say: Communication, Media and Celebrity Culture Should we hold what celebrities and public figures say to a higher moral standard? Are their communication mistakes worth more? Alisha L. Menzies will lead a conversation that asks the audience to consider the burden of moral culpability faced by celebrities. Controversies In Communication: Centuries of Selfies

College of Arts and Letters CONTROVERSIES IN COMMUNICATION: HISTORY/ETHICS/TECHNOLOGY This Spring 2020 monthly lecture series, open to the public and aimed at older adults in the greater Tampa Bay community, will examine contemporary controversies in communication through their historical antecedents, ethical implications, and technological applications.
