Annual Dean’s Lecture: Martin Woessner presents Terrence Malick: Film, Philosophy and the Search for Meaning
Lectures
Terrence Malick is one of American cinema’s most celebrated filmmakers. His films—from Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978) to The Thin Red Line (1998), The Tree of Life (2011), and, most recently, A Hidden Life (2019)—have been heralded for their artistry and their beauty, but what really sets them apart is their ideas. In his new book, Terrence Malick and the Examined Life, intellectual historian Martin Woessner offers the most comprehensive account to date of this unparalleled filmmaker’s intellectual and artistic development. Utilizing newly available archival sources to offer original interpretations of his canonical films, Woessner illuminates Malick’s early education in philosophy at Harvard and Oxford as well as his cinematic apprenticeship at the American Film Institute to show how a young student searching for personal meaning became a famous director of Hollywood films.

How and Why Hackers Hack!
Advanced Digital Literacy Center
Spartans: Cybercriminals use various tools, techniques, and technology to attack organizations and gain access. Everything from social engineering to attacking internet-facing endpoints, their main goal is to access the organization and steal the data. If they can sell off the information or, even better, encrypt the victim's data and extort them for large amounts of money. It's important we understand how they do it, why they do it, and what can be done to reduce the risk or opportunity for them to be successful. With the recent Conti data leak and from other cybercriminal groups, we can learn to understand and know our enemy to help us protect and defend our organizations and reduce the risk of an attack.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the various technological methods cybercriminals use to attack organizations.
- Learn the ways we can help protect ourselves and the organization
- See how cybercriminals use social engineering to get users to open the front door for them.

Communication and Media Studies Lecture: A Media Archaeology of Other Networks
Lectures
Lori Emerson (CU Boulder) will talk about her longstanding work in media archaeology and how it lays the groundwork for her new book Other Networks: A Radical Technology Sourcebook, which is dedicated to uncovering and documenting networks before and outside of the Internet. Emerson will discuss a variety of networks, including packet radio, barbed wire fence phones, telefacsimile, videophones, telex and microbroadcasting. We have become so accustomed to associating networks with computer networks that it is easy to forget: networks have long been deeply heterogeneous and they have existed for nearly as long as human civilization.
