Pure Prairie League

That old cowpoke “Sad Luke” is their mascot and their name comes from an obscure 19th century Temperance Union mentioned in the 1939 film Dodge City. Pure Prairie League is a distinctly American band, founded in Columbus, Ohio in the mid-1960s by a group of friends playing cover songs. The Craig Fuller song, “Aime” has become a classic. With songs like “Two Lane Highway,” “Let Me Love You Tonight,” “Falling In and Out of Love,” and “Early Morning Riser,” Pure Prairie League stayed at the top through the 1970s and early 1980s. “Tidal” Exhibition

Tidal is a group exhibition highlighting visual artists whose work reflects on environmental issues of our planet’s coastal areas. This exhibition asks, “How can we, as participants in and bystanders of climate change, alter our own detrimental behaviors before nature holds us accountable to them?” Artists: Cheryl Maeder, Miami FL Giannina Coppiano Dwin, Miami Fl Gustavo Oviedo, Miami Fl Lisa Reindorf, Boston MA Tidal was curated as part of Delray Beach’s Climate Change Weekend. "Ecosystem" Exhibition

Ecosystem is an exhibition featuring the work of Andy Krebs. Ecosystem addresses the interactions between humans and various natural environments as well as the relationship between humans and our most intimate ecosystems – our own bodies. It examines both the feelings of tension and belonging that accompany experiences in the natural world. Many works in the show depict several versions of the same human figure. These figures explore what it means to be alone in a natural setting and the potential such situations offer for the flow of exploratory, dreamlike, and uninhibited thought. At a time when concept often outweighs technique and technology out competes biology, Ecosystem attempts to claim that art in today’s world can be both technical and conceptual. It celebrates the resurgence of figurative art in a modern context. It also encourages us to remember our roots as biological organisms, as animals, and to respect the ways in which human bodies and minds are parts of the natural world. Cost: Free. Contact: 561-330-9614. Audience: Adults. Children. Families. Seniors. Teens. Friday, September 6, 2019, 9:00 AM – Thursday, October 10, 2019, 7:00 PM. 313 NE 3rd St Delray Beach, FL 33444. Spyro Gyra

When saxophone player Jay Beckenstein was at the University of Buffalo, he majored in biology before switching to music performance. One biology lesson stuck: he remembered a freshwater green alga with spiral bands of chloroplasts. He and childhood friend Jeremy Walls settled in Buffalo after graduation and began jamming with other musicians on Tuesday nights. They called those evenings Tuesday Night Jazz Jams. When their popularity rose and they added a high-schooler named Tom Schuman to join them, club owners insisted on a real name. Beckenstein remembered that biology lesson and called the group Spyro Gyra. “It began as a joke,” Beckenstein said some years ago. “I said ‘spirogyra,’ he misspelled it and here we are thirty years later. In retrospect, it’s okay. In a way, it sounds like what we do. It sounds like motion and energy.” Beckenstein loved playing in clubs around Buffalo in the 1970s. The Long-Island born musician grew up listening to the music of Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollin… Cost: 53. Ticket Web Link: https://www.lyrictheatre.com/. Ticket Phone: 7722867827.
