Guadalupe: An American Pentecost

This event is offered in partnership with Candler School of Theology's  Women, Theology and Ministry, and the Aquinas Center of Theology.  Since my earliest memories, I have been fascinated by the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Apart from the gospels, no story has had a more significant impact on my life.  Furthermore, the intensity of devotion to Guadalupe, around the world stirs our imagination.  While Marian apparitions the world over are not typically identified with the event of Pentecost, nonetheless, Our Lady of Guadalupe is worthy of the title “An American Pentecost” because this sacred symbol mediates for many devotees an experience of the Holy Spirit that is characterized by four themes that distinguish the event of Pentecost as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles.  Recognizing Guadalupe as an American Pentecost matters because it serves to further encourage believing Christians and Catholics to live into our faith more authentically.   This lecture will explore what it means to identify… University Event Topic: Religion & Ethics.

University Event Topic: Religion & Ethics. Department / Organization: Aquinas Center.
