Distilling Heterogeneous Treatment Effects: Stable Subgroup Estimation in Causal Inference

University Events Recent black-box methods for estimating heterogeneous treatment effects lack interpretability, limiting their practical utility. We introduce causal distillation trees (CDT), a two-stage approach that first fits any machine learning model to estimate individual-level treatment effects, then "distills" these estimates into interpretable subgroups using a simple decision tree. CDT inherits the predictive performance of black-box models while preserving interpretability. We derive theoretical consistency guarantees for the estimated subgroups and introduce stability-driven diagnostics to evaluate subgroup quality. We demonstrate CDT on a randomized controlled trial of antiretroviral HIV treatment, showing it outperforms state-of-the-art approaches in constructing stable, clinically relevant subgroups. Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man

University Events Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man Directed by Carol Reed , 1949 | 104 min. Arguably no film better captured the sense of post-World War II disillusionment than Carol Reed’s realization of an original Graham Greene script about despicable crime and corruption in Vienna. Declared by at least one critic as “probably the greatest British thriller of the postwar era,” the film, featuring exteriors shot on location in Vienna, is largely a detective noir featuring an out of his depth American pulp fiction writer Holly Martens (Joseph Cotton), his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) and the woman they both love (Alida Valli). Reed elicited memorable performances from his cast (also including Trevor Howard). Cinematographer Robert Krasker furthered the film's unsettling atmosphere with his extensive use of canted angles. And Anton Karas’s zither “Third Man Theme” achieved top-charting status for nearly three months. You will have a hard time forgetting it or more to the point, the film. Eric Cline Lecture

University Events “Speak to the King, my lord and my Sun god”: Love, War, and Diplomacy in Canaan during the Amarna Age” In 1887, a cache of nearly 400 clay tablets inscribed in cuneiform was discovered at Tell El-Amarna, the capital city of the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten. Dating to the fourteenth century BCE, it is the only royal archive that has been discovered from New Kingdom Egypt so far. Within the archive are fifty letters exchanged with the other great powers of the day, including the Hittites, Babylonians, and Assyrians. However, there are also nearly three hundred letters sent by vassal Canaanite rulers, such as Baraiya, the king of Megiddo; Abdi-Heba, the king of Jerusalem; and Rib-Hada, the king of Byblos. The letters offer a glimpse into the vibrant diplomatic world of the Late Bronze Age, revealing royal marriages, elaborate negotiations, and exchanges of luxury gifts between the great kings, as well as political maneuvering and appeals from the vassal kings of Canaan, including Baraiya, who sent six letters to t… University Event Topic: Humanities. DSci Happy Hour with David Hirshberg

University Events "Inference based on imagined randomization" Statistical analysis requires that something be random, e.g. random sampling from a population or randomized assignment of treatment. But in panel data — repeated observations of the same units over time — it’s often unclear what, if anything, is actually random. Whatever statistical claims we make are based on a random mechanism we’re imagining. This talk is about basing our analysis on imagined randomization of treatment: what assignment mechanisms we might want to imagine, what we can conclude if we buy into what we’re imagining, and how we might interpret those conclusions with a little more skepticism. The main example will be an analysis of synthetic control methods having imagined that units select treatment independently with unknown unit-specific probabilities (Arkhangelsky & Hirshberg, arXiv:2311.13575). JWJI Colloquium featuring Adia Harvey Wingfield

University Events Talk Title: Gray Areas: How the Way We Work Maintains Racism Once mainstream, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become increasingly controversial. Yet whether companies proclaim their support for diversity or run from the term, racial inequality persists in many workplaces. Even when support for DEI was at its peak, Black workers were slower to be hired, earned less than their white colleagues, stalled out at midlevel positions, and rarely advanced to the top ranks of organizations. Why do these disparities persist? In this talk, Adia Harvey Wingfield answers this question by documenting how sociological dynamics of work continue to thwart Black employees’ progress. Following narratives of seven Black workers in fields ranging from academia to medicine to entertainment, she discusses the unexpected ways that recruitment, promotion, culture, and other basic aspects of work are themselves major drivers of racial inequality. Seminar

University Events Olfactory information processing: temporal sequences, geometry and relevance Sensory stimuli evoke complex spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal activity. Are all features of this activity relevant for behavior? What role do ‘irrelevant’ features play? We addressed these questions in the mammalian olfactory system, where neural activity in the olfactory bulb encodes odor stimuli and transmits odor-related information to higher brain areas. Utilizing pattern optogenetics for control over evoked neural activity, we created synthetic odor stimuli to explore the relevance of various neural features for stimulus readout. We found that earlier neural activity contains more behaviorally relevant information than later activity. Both spatial (identifying which neurons) and temporal (timing of neuron firing) features prove crucial in shaping the percept of a sensory object. We draw connections between our findings and natural odor processing, proposing that the structure of information relevance is defined by concent… University Event Topic: College. Research. Science. CMBC LECTURE | Ken Paller "Sleep-based Memory Reactivation and Opportunities for Better Benefits from Sleep"

University Events Co-sponsored by Department of Psychology "Sleep-based Memory Reactivation and Opportunities for Better Benefits from Sleep" Sleep is critical not only for its restorative benefits but also for its contributions to memory function. Memory reactivation occurs covertly during sleep. Corresponding changes in the brain move memory consolidation forward, enhancing the likelihood of later remembering and stoking creativity. Our habits of overnight memory reactivation—and the specific memories we reactivate each night—influence our daytime psychological well-being. What transpires in our brains after we fall asleep may seem beyond volitional control. To the contrary, it can be strategically modified to seek various benefits. We have developed methods to modify sleep-based memory reactivation using sensory stimulation, and studies with these methods have uncovered various facets of this covert processing, including dreaming. We’ve also sought insights through studies of the well-documented methods of contemplative… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Colloquium-Physics Department - William Gilpin, Assistant Professor (UT Austin)

University Events Geometry guides generalization in zero-shot learning of dynamical systems What limits our ability to model multiscale systems, like turbulent flows or biological dynamics? Classical scientific machine learning uses inductive biases to encode domain knowledge into data-driven models. Yet recent efforts to build scientific foundation models suggest that scale alone unlocks surprising generalization capabilities. I will describe my group’s efforts to understand generalization in scientific machine learning. We pretrain a foundation model on hundreds of thousands of dynamical systems, and discover that it develops the ability to zero-shot forecast unseen systems without retraining. Using mechanistic interpretability probes, we find that generalization capability in large models is enabled by a complex set of internal mechanisms, including zero-shot transfer across scales, in-context learning of transfer operators, and a neural scaling law relating performance to the diversity of dynamical systems encountered dur… University Event Topic: College. CMBC LECTURE | Chris Krupenye "The Social Minds of Humans and Other Apes"

University Events Co-sponsored by Emory Departments of Anthropology and Psychology "The Social Minds of Humans and Other Apes"Humans are defined in no small part by the complexity of our social lives, and the cognitive mechanisms we possess for making sense of our social worlds. These capacities support unique forms of communication, cooperation, and culture. But how did they evolve, and to what extent do they rely on language or other uniquely human representational machinery? To address these questions, I will explore the social lives of our closest relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos, and present a number of controlled experiments probing their cognition. These studies reveal that other apes gather a diversity of knowledge about their social worlds, and share with humans numerous capacities for tracking and predicting the behavior of their groupmates. These rich foundations of human social intelligence therefore can operate in the absence of language, and very likely evolved at least 6-9 million years ago in the ancestors… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Honors Concert: Nadia Piecyk

University Events 2025–2026 Emory Dance Free, No Tickets Required Emory Dance major Nadia Piecyk’s research is grounded in a view of disability as inherently queer. Her honors thesis project investigates how the body-centricity of disability and queerness disrupts normative hierarchies that privilege mind over body and stability over fluidity. Both disability and queerness are subject to external scrutiny, medicalization, and societal expectations of performance, yet both challenge normative expectations of embodiment and identity, existing in the liminal space between visibility and invisibility. Given that queerness and disability are both so “bodied,” how do hypervisibility and invisibility show up on the stage?  Recommended parking for Schwartz Center events is the Fishburne Parking Deck (free for events after 6 p.m. and on weekends).

JWJI Colloquium featuring Kristin Waters

University Events Talk Title: Maria W. Stewart and the Roots of Black Political Thought In this talk, Dr. Waters explores the life and writings of Maria W. Stewart (1803-1879), “the first Black woman political writer” in the United States and a foundational voice of Black feminist thought. Throughout the 18th century, African American lecturers, ministers, poets, essayists, and activists set the stage for the organized civil rights movement to follow. Luminaries such as Prince Hall, Phillis Wheatley, and the Reverend Thomas Paul built a community on Beacon Hill in Boston where they were determined to bring the liberal ideals of the American Revolution to fruition for all people. Vector Media

University Events It is difficult to overstate the importance of text and image embedding in contemporary machine learning. Yet many current critiques of artificial intelligence overlook this paradigm in their efforts to understand generativity as a cultural phenomenon. In this talk, Offert presents a new theory and history of embedding as a medium. He argues that, whereas previous technological revolutions produced new media on the basis of existing ones, contemporary machine learning systems instead aim to dissolve prior media into a universal space of commensurability. This transformation becomes clearer when embedding is situated within the history of computer vision, where it emerges as the provisional endpoint of a longer series of attempts to theorize intelligence as compression. Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush

University Events Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush Directed by Charles Chaplin, 1925 | 96 min. 1920s silent comedy was America’s gift to the world, and Charlie Chaplin’s film about the Tramp’s adventures in the frozen north remains the peak of his considerable 1920s achievements. He had solved the challenge of combining stand-alone comic episodes into a fully realized narrative and created a fully realized fictional world. Chaplin remains the greatest screen performer in cinema history, and this film—for which he wrote the script, the music and which he directed--showcases his trademark inventiveness via the imaginative transformation of objects, hilarious slapstick, as well as The Tramp’s enduring, endearing yearning for love and acceptance. We are screening the brand new restoration print celebrating the film’s 100th anniversary. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. CMBC LECTURE | Raphaël Julliard "The Creative Engine and the Sense of Rightness"

University Events “The Creative Engine and the Sense of Rightness”My research operates at the intersection of anthropology, the psychology of creativity, and micro-phenomenology. It is driven by a central question: in the uncertainty of the creative act, how do creators know when it works? While traditional approaches often rely on retrospective reconstruction, my work focuses on the "creative engine": the real-time feedback loop between Action (what the maker does) and Affect (how the emerging form acts back upon the maker). I posit that creativity is not a cognitive planning process, but a navigational skill steered by a pre-reflective affective criterion—a felt sense of fitness we conceptualize as "Rightness"—guiding the artist between the risks. To study this, I have moved from historical analysis to experimental ethnography, developing a novel methodology—The Researcher-As-Obstacle (RAO)—designed to investigate the creative mind in action. My goal is to establish a rigorous anthropology of this navigational competence,… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. All About Physical Therapy: What is It, and Should You Try It?

University Events When you’re dealing with muscle or joint pain, how do you usually handle it? Do you rest and take a break from your usual exercise? Take over-the-counter or prescription pain medication? Turn to a heating pad or ice, or seek out a physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, or other in-person treatments? These are all valid options. But they generally overlook the fact that regular, consistent exercises that are tailored to your specific pain condition are the best way to keep your muscles and joints healthy over time and soothe pain flares when they do happen. Presented by a Hinge Health expert physical therapist, this event will discuss the benefits of virtual physical therapy programs, how they differ from traditional in-person physical therapy, and how Hinge Health can help you reduce back, joint, and muscle pain. 3 things you will take away from this event: - What virtual physical therapy includes - How it's similar and different from traditional in-person physical therapy - How Hinge Health's… Online Location: https://hingehealth.zoom.us/webinar/register/9617625361505/WN_5u1clSOiT2ONvm6UfZ-O9A#/registration. Emory Cinematheque: Sense and Sensibility

University Events Emory Cinematheque: Sense and Sensibility Directed by Ang Lee, 1995 | 136 min. Emma Thompson’s perceptive and witty Oscar-winning screenplay provided the foundation for this outstanding adaptation of Jane Austen’s first novel. We remain always at the side of the dispossessed Dashwood sisters, especially the practical Elinor (Thompson) and the passionate Marianne (Kate Winslet), as they debate how best to approach matters of the heart, over which they, like all of Austen’s heroines, have so little control. Boasting a fine cast of British actors--including the three romcom heartthrobs Hugh Grant, Greg Wise and Alan Rickman--the film perfectly marries Ang Lee’s penchant for long takes and stories of repressed emotion to late 18th century British society. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Wednesday, April 8, 2026, 7:30 PM. Examining Boston's Brazilian, Dominican, and Salvadoran communities, this book provides an exhaustive analysis spanning nearly a decade to highlight the profound impacts of the Affordable Care Act and subsequent policy shifts on these marginalized groups. Emory Cinematheque: The Lady Eve

University Events Emory Cinematheque: The Lady Eve Directed by Preston Sturges, 1941 | 94 min. With The Lady Eve, the brilliant writer-director Preston Sturges created the Hollywood screwball comedy to top them all. It’s full of impossible situations, clever, double-entendre dialogue (necessary in the era of the Production Code) and plentiful pratfalls. When con artist Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) seduces and then falls for an out-of-his-depth snake-studying heir Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) on an ocean liner, she gets more than she bargained for and resolves to set things right. Boasting a cast of Sturges comic regulars, as well as the always delightful Charles Coburn as Jean’s deceitful father “Colonel” Harrington, The Lady Eve was written expressly for Stanwyck and she goes to town in this “woman on top” romp. Meanwhile Fonda demonstrates his comic chops to the fullest. Who knew? Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Wednesday, April 15, 2026, 7:30 PM. White Hall 208 | 301 Dowman Dr.
