Emory Cinematheque: They Won't Forget
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: They Won't Forget, Directed by Mervyn LeRoy, 1937 | 95 min.
This low-budget anti-lynching film from Mervyn Leroy (I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang) may be the most powerful 1930s Hollywood film you’ve never seen. As Bernstein discusses in his Screening a Lynching: The Leo Frank Case on Film and Television, the film is a thinly disguised fictional adaptation of Atlanta’s own notorious Leo Frank and Mary Phagan case. Featuring marvelous performances from Claude Rains as an ambitious prosecutor and a cast of relative but talented unknowns (including Lana Turner in her screen debut), They Won’t Forget is classic fast-paced Warner Bros. product, a film so potent that Atlanta’s city leaders ensured it was never shown here upon its release. Come and see why. Print courtesy of the Library of Congress

Emory Cinematheque: Invasion of the Body Snatchers
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Directed by Don Siegel, 1956 | 80 min.
Residents of a small California town become alarmed when friends and relatives become shells of their former selves. It’s up to Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) and his old flame Becky Driscoll (Dana Wynter) to figure out what is going on and how to stop it. Producer Walter Wanger, the subject of Bernstein’s first book, produced this classic, ingeniously-shot, low-budget sci-fi horror film, directed by Don Siegel (Dirty Harry, The Shootist) from a noir-tinged script by Daniel Mainwaring (of Out of the Past fame). Its generalized portrayal of fighting the pressure to conform resulted in its being interpreted as both anti-Communist and anti-anti-Communist. Remade several times, this version arguably remains the best.

JWJI Colloquium featuring Edda L. Fields-Black

Talk Title:
Making COMBEE, Finding the Freedom Seekers, Telling their Stories
Prior to the publication of COMBEE (winner of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in History), historians of slavery had slave narratives and WPA interviews to tell the history of enslaved people in their own words and from their own perspectives. COMBEE uses the US Civil War Pension Files and slave holders' documents to identify the enslaved people who escaped enslavement on seven rice plantations on the Combahee River Raid, tracing them backwards into enslavement and forward into freedom. This lecture will introduce the enslaved people liberated in the Combahee River Raid and the sources Fields-Black used to identify these freedom seekers, tell their stories, and document the largest slave revolt in US history.

Emory Cinematheque: Rome, Open City
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: Rome, Open City
Directed by Roberto Rossellini, 1945 | 103 min.
Based on actual events that took place in the closing days of World War II, Roberto Rossellini’s fast-paced, thrilling landmark drama about the Catholic and Communist fight against Nazi rule in Rome was nothing short of revolutionary. A founding work of Italian Neorealism, the film rejected many Hollywood studio traditions and focused on ordinary people and their struggles to survive in the wake of World War II’s devastation. Intricately plotted and shot while the Nazis were still in Rome, the film established a new standard of cinematic realism. All in all, it is an inspiring, highly influential and deeply moving tribute to Italian resilience and the abiding power of love.

The Dates that Dominate Wikipedia's Telling of Global History - Making global histories is difficult. Research in global history has grappled for at least twenty years with the limitations that available methods pose to explaining global movements, connections, and phenomena (Clarence-Smith, Pomerance and Vries, 2006; Gänger and Jürgen Osterhammel, 2024). While these limitations can be pragmatic—from archival access and restrictions to individual scholars’ limited linguistic backgrounds—current theories in global history are most useful for national, regional, or small-scale comparative scopes rather than the large-scale global resonance of historical phenomena. Here, we introduce a comparably large-scale and computational approach by looking for convergences and divergences in the dates mentioned across hundreds of thousands of Wikipedia articles written in hundreds of languages. We find that four dates dominate a significant proportion of the dataset, indicating that articles across these languages exhibit…

Sunday FUNday: Mola Magic
University Events
Before Spanish colonists introduced scissors to Central and South America, people wove fabric in one large piece rather than cutting and stitching it. But in the 20th century, the Guna people of Panamá began embracing cloth-cutting as a powerful new art form. Using layered fabrics, reverse applique, and intricate geometric designs, Guna women created dulemolas—vibrant rectangular panels that form the front and back of traditional blouses. These panels often feature stylized animals or symbolic patterns that reflect their cultural resilience.
Come learn about this unique textile tradition and create your own one-of-a-kind dulemola or “mola” using different fabrics!
Sunday FUNday is a free drop-in program for all families and includes admission to the museum. Supplies available on a first come, first served basis.

Talk Title: Crisis and Care
In 1974, U.S. National Security Memorandum 200 (popularly known as the Kissinger Report) mapped the global population crisis onto the global oil crisis in ways that dramatically shaped the professionalization of Filipina medical labor in the Philippines. As Filipina nurses and midwives became contract workers in different parts of the world, the authoritarian government of Ferdinand Marcos invested and intensified population control measures, women’s health projects, land reform policies, and labor export programs. Diaz points to the ways that the management of political crises in the Philippines structured reproductive labor through a politics of counterinsurgency, and Filipina labor materialized U.S. imperial strategies into state modernization, reconfiguring old colonial relations into emerging imperial projects.
This talk draws from Diaz's current book project, which argues that Filipina labor presents a genealogy of colonial crisis that charts the wider social landscapes th…

Emory Cinematheque: Nothing but a Man

Emory Cinematheque: Nothing but a Man
Directed by Michael Roemer, 1964 | 95 min.
This underseen masterpiece of American independent cinema depicts working class Black experience in the South of the early 1960s with enormous sensitivity and intimacy, a far cry from the slicker Hollywood versions produced in the decade. When self-contained, confident railroad worker Duff Anderson (Ivan Dixon, The Spook Who Sat By the Door, Hogan’s Heroes) comes to a southern town and falls in love with the preacher’s daughter Josie (jazz legend Abbey Lincoln), they struggle to fight all kinds of pressures from the Black and white communities which insist they accept the indignities of segregation and white supremacy. Recently restored, the film looks better than ever, with superb performances from the entire cast.

When Theory Leads: Towards a Humanities-Forward Model of Computational Research -- The advent of Large Language Models and the cultural data they rely upon has renewed a longstanding conversation about the role of the humanities, and humanities scholars, in computational research. This role has to do not only with the application of LLMs (and related computational methods) to humanities research questions, but also with the application of humanistic methods to computational research. Using a series of projects about social movements from the Emory Digital Humanities Lab as case studies, this talk will show how humanistic methods—and theory in particular—can not only inform the overall design of computational research projects but can also shape the development of computational models themselves. Connecting the contributions of these projects back to the broader landscape of AI/ML, I will argue that humanities theory, and the scholars who produce and engage with it, have very clear roles to play if we are to e…

JWJI Colloquium featuring Sarah RudeWalker
University Events
Talk Title:
Revolutionary Poetics: The Rhetoric of the Black Arts Movement
This talk will introduce audience members to the aesthetic and political mission of the Black Arts Movement (BAM), the aesthetic arm of Black Power in the 1960s and 1970s, by assessing its legacy as a movement that aimed fundamentally to change people’s minds through art. Dr. RudeWalker argues that BAM has had far-reaching influence, particularly in encouraging positive conceptions of Blackness, in the valorization of Black language practices in art and in education, in modeling the populist dissemination of Black vernacular culture through writing and popular music, and in setting the groundwork for considerations of the aesthetic intersections of race with gender and sexuality. These legacies stand as the movement’s primary—and largely unacknowledged—successes, and they provide significant lessons for navigating our current political moment.

Blunt Instrument: Why Economic Theory Can’t Get Any Better, Why We Need It Anyway
University Events
Based on his book of the same name, Dr. Rosenberg will discuss why economic theory—with no track-record of predictive success—is still an indispensable tool for protecting civilized life. Economic theory has never gotten any better at prediction. Its explanations are always after the fact. The mathematical models economists have devoted themselves to for more than a century can’t be improved to enhance their empirical relevance. But from this research program that never paid off, a very useful tool has emerged—game theory. It’s just what civilized society needs to protect itself from the rapaciousness that condemns all markets to fail. In his talk, Dr. Rosenberg will help explain exactly what is needed to make sense of economic theory, and why despite its failures, it’s still indispensable. Economic theory is something we all should understand because the economy affects us all, and it is economic theorists who shape that economy for good or ill.

Making Maps for Publication
University Events
This workshop will guide researchers in producing maps for publication, with a particular focus on books and academic journals. We will spend the first part of the workshop covering best practices for effective visual communication, including design, dealing with common academic publication limitations (small map size, limited number of figures, restriction to greyscale), and working with art guidelines from the publisher. We will then complete a hands-on exercise in ArcGIS Pro applying many of these lessons to create a final map layout that is publication ready. This workshop is intended for those with some ArcGIS Pro experience and will not cover introductory concepts. However, all experience levels are welcome. We will work through the hands-on portion step-by-step using provided data. For those interested in learning more about GIS software, resources will be provided at the end of the workshop.

Emory Cinematheque: Ashes and Diamonds
Directed by Andzrej Wajda, 1958 | 103 min.
Andzrej Wajda’s third film on World War II Polish experience is still arguably his greatest. Its tight 24 hour time frame takes place in a small town on the pivotal day when the Nazis have retreated but the Soviet military are rolling in to assume authority--The long-time underground resistance fighter Maciek Chelmicki (the charismatic, dynamic Zbigniew Cybulski, called “the Polish James Dean”) has fought both enemies---and he weighs the moral and emotional dimensions of his latest assignment--to assassinate the new local Communist leader. Jerzy Wójcik’s absolutely stunning deep focus cinematography conveys this utterly compelling story of Poland complex and tragic history in luminous images.

Ethics Across Traditions: Thou Shall Not See - Ethics and Prohibiting Images
University Events
Join us for a heartfelt conversation about controlling—even banning—what we might see.
Much as certain words are prohibited because they are deemed dangerous or degrading, some images are also considered too threatening to produce, distribute, or view. For instance:
Some think the Pernkopf Atlas, a book of anatomy drawn from Nazi victims, should continue to be used it Schools of Medicine, while others consider it verboten.
Religions like Islam and Jainism, and indigenous communities like those at Etowah, consider images powerful, yet some images are deemed forbidden. Why?
What is a museum’s responsibility to the truth? Should museums refrain from putting out objects that may be objectionable or sensitive, or should they in the interest of the truth be more inclined to do so?
Cartographers often deliberately hide what’s in plain sight. Who decides what to obscure?
What is the nature of such illicit images? What fears or concerns justify forbidding them? Though beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, some ima…

Emory Cinematheque: The Lives of Others

Screening introduced by Dr. Caroline Schaumann, Professor of German Studies.
Florian Hencken von Donnersmarck burst onto the international scene with this Oscar-winning exploration of oppressed life and artistic censorship during the 1980s in repressive, authoritarian East Germany. When a die-hard STASI (secret police) agent begins surveilling a successful, government-approved playwright and his partner, a leading actress, he begins to question his work and his own beliefs. With an exquisitely complex script and superb performances from his cast, von Donnersmarck crafted one of the greatest films of the 21st century, a truly moving example of coming to terms with the past and the unquenchable desire for freedom.

Emory Cinematheque: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Directed by John Ford, 1962 | 123 min.
The western genre mythologized America’s frontier expansion, and John Ford’s last great film in this genre manages to sum up both his own work and the genre itself. Through the multiple confrontations among the murderous outlaw Liberty Valence (Lee Marvin), the quintessential western loner hero Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) and naïve eastern lawyer Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart), this ultimately elegiac film explores and dismantles the mythology of the settling of the west while dramatizing the process of establishing a western state—and at what cost. Suspenseful, funny and ultimately melancholy, Liberty Valence‘s dramatization of competing values of individualism and community and the place of gun violence in American history remain strikingly relevant today. The three leads give iconic performances.

Student Studio: Scented History
University Events
Across ancient cultures, scents were closely connected to daily life, ritual, and well-being. The ancient Greeks ground aromatic plants and resins and suspended them in olive oil, while ancient Egyptians combined materials such as lily, frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon bark, and thyme with animal fats to create perfumes believed to soothe the body, focus the mind, and restore balance. In this Student Studio, take a pause from your day as you explore the history of scent and create your own signature fragrance using a variety of scented oils—an opportunity to slow down, engage your senses, and support personal well-being through creative practice.

Emory Cinematheque: Notorious
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: Notorious
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 1946 | 102 min
Hitchcock’s best black and white Hollywood film, the recently restored Notorious shows the master of suspense in complete command of cinematic storytelling and simultaneously marked his new level of commitment to portraying romance. In this espionage thriller, Hitchcock vividly portrays the intense romantic triangle and swirl of sexual jealousy involving proto-CIA agent Devlin (Cary Grant), the amateur spy Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman) and the man she is assigned to seduce in Brazil, the Nazi Alex Sebastian (Claude Rains). The three leads are at the top of their game, thanks in part to the brilliant, often cynical and morally complex script by Ben Hecht.

Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man
Directed by Carol Reed , 1949 | 104 min.
Arguably no film better captured the sense of post-World War II disillusionment than Carol Reed’s realization of an original Graham Greene script about despicable crime and corruption in Vienna. Declared by at least one critic as “probably the greatest British thriller of the postwar era,” the film, featuring exteriors shot on location in Vienna, is largely a detective noir featuring an out of his depth American pulp fiction writer Holly Martens (Joseph Cotton), his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) and the woman they both love (Alida Valli). Reed elicited memorable performances from his cast (also including Trevor Howard). Cinematographer Robert Krasker furthered the film's unsettling atmosphere with his extensive use of canted angles. And Anton Karas’s zither “Third Man Theme” achieved top-charting status for nearly three months. You will have a hard time forgetting it or more to the point, the film.

Nix-Mann Endowed Lecture: Richard Moore on Compassion and Forgiveness
University Events
On May 4, 1972, in Derry, Ireland, a ten-year-old Richard Moore was shot with a rubber bullet fired by a British solider on the edge of his school’s playground.
He returned to his school, attended university, became a successful businessman, founded the organization Children in Crossfire, became an accomplished musician, married a wife, and had two children. In 2006, Richard met the solider who shot him.
In this talk, Moore will speak on compassion and his journey from a child who was a victim of the conflict in Northern Ireland, to finding freedom in forgiveness.
“Among the billions of people in the world you [Richard] have provided a living example of the true practice of forgiveness and therefore a source of hope for every one of us.” – His Holiness the 14th Dali Lama
The program is free and open to the public, and registration is required.

JWJI Colloquium featuring Adia Harvey Wingfield
University Events
Talk Title:
Gray Areas: How the Way We Work Maintains Racism
Once mainstream, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become increasingly controversial. Yet whether companies proclaim their support for diversity or run from the term, racial inequality persists in many workplaces. Even when support for DEI was at its peak, Black workers were slower to be hired, earned less than their white colleagues, stalled out at midlevel positions, and rarely advanced to the top ranks of organizations. Why do these disparities persist?
In this talk, Adia Harvey Wingfield answers this question by documenting how sociological dynamics of work continue to thwart Black employees’ progress. Following narratives of seven Black workers in fields ranging from academia to medicine to entertainment, she discusses the unexpected ways that recruitment, promotion, culture, and other basic aspects of work are themselves major drivers of racial inequality.

Emory Cinematheque: High and Low
Directed by Akira Kurosawa, 1963 | 143 min.
Akira Kurosawa is best known for his innovative samurai films, but he took special pride in his contemporary dramas like Ikiru / Living (1952) and this masterful kidnapping detective thriller, recently reconfigured by Spike Lee as Higher 2 Lowest (2025). Immediately after shoe company executive Kingo Gondo (frequent collaborator Toshiro Mifune) mortgages everything to buy a controlling interest in his company, he faces a moral dilemma as to whether to pay an outrageous ransom for the kidnapping of his chauffeur’s son. Kurosawa, at this point fearless in his storytelling prowess, uses every cinematic technique at his disposal to produce a gripping, unpredictable, exhilarating film that is both intimate and epic in its scope.

JWJI Colloquium featuring Kristin Waters

Talk Title:
Maria W. Stewart and the Roots of Black Political Thought
In this talk, Dr. Waters explores the life and writings of Maria W. Stewart (1803-1879), “the first Black woman political writer” in the United States and a foundational voice of Black feminist thought. Throughout the 18th century, African American lecturers, ministers, poets, essayists, and activists set the stage for the organized civil rights movement to follow. Luminaries such as Prince Hall, Phillis Wheatley, and the Reverend Thomas Paul built a community on Beacon Hill in Boston where they were determined to bring the liberal ideals of the American Revolution to fruition for all people.

Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush

Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush
Directed by Charles Chaplin, 1925 | 96 min.
1920s silent comedy was America’s gift to the world, and Charlie Chaplin’s film about the Tramp’s adventures in the frozen north remains the peak of his considerable 1920s achievements. He had solved the challenge of combining stand-alone comic episodes into a fully realized narrative and created a fully realized fictional world. Chaplin remains the greatest screen performer in cinema history, and this film—for which he wrote the script, the music and which he directed--showcases his trademark inventiveness via the imaginative transformation of objects, hilarious slapstick, as well as The Tramp’s enduring, endearing yearning for love and acceptance. We are screening the brand new restoration print celebrating the film’s 100th anniversary.

Emory Cinematheque: Sense and Sensibility
Directed by Ang Lee, 1995 | 136 min.
Emma Thompson’s perceptive and witty Oscar-winning screenplay provided the foundation for this outstanding adaptation of Jane Austen’s first novel. We remain always at the side of the dispossessed Dashwood sisters, especially the practical Elinor (Thompson) and the passionate Marianne (Kate Winslet), as they debate how best to approach matters of the heart, over which they, like all of Austen’s heroines, have so little control. Boasting a fine cast of British actors--including the three romcom heartthrobs Hugh Grant, Greg Wise and Alan Rickman--the film perfectly marries Ang Lee’s penchant for long takes and stories of repressed emotion to late 18th century British society.
