Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (daily exhibition)
University Events
“Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. The exhibition brings together diverse works – from a draft of “The Wiz” and a first edition of “Dracula” to protest flyers and Tim Youd’s retyped diptychs – showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance. Drawing on Rose Library archives and Youd’s art, it traces the typewriter’s impact on the 20th century and beyond. Multiple typewriters from different decades will be on display as well. Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. Live musical performances will be added one day a week in the near future as Youd types; calendar entries will be updated when that happens. Exhibitions dates: Daily Aug. 27 – Dec. 20, 2025. Weekend hours vary; closed on holidays. For…

Recent Advances in Generative Modeling and Synthetic Biomedical Data
University Events
The growing use of electronic health records (EHRs) and biomedical data presents new opportunities and challenges for developing generative models that can produce
realistic synthetic data while safeguarding privacy and reducing bias. In this talk, I will present recent advances in generative modeling for biomedical data, including
diffusion-based methods for privacy-preserving EHR time series, a new semi-parametric copula flow approach for irregularly sampled functional data, and a
bias-corrected synthesis framework that improves learning in imbalanced rare-event
settings. These techniques together form a toolkit for generating reliable, privacy-conscious synthetic data and expanding the usability of sensitive biomedical datasets.

Spectral Witness of Entanglement for Quantum Materials
The rapidly advancing field of quantum materials demands increasingly precise methods for characterizing and controlling entanglement. While early progress was made in quantum optics, extending these approaches to complex many-body systems in quantum materials remains a major challenge. I will introduce the entanglement witness framework for characterizing entanglement depth using experimentally accessible solid-state spectroscopies. In the first half of the talk, I will begin with the detection of spin entanglement in quantum magnets through the quantum metrology and spin quantum Fisher information (QFI). These metrics can be accessed via inelastic neutron scattering and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Importantly, RIXS provides a route to extend such probes far out of equilibrium, enabling the control of entanglement with light. In the second half of the talk, I will move beyond entanglement among distinguishable local modes to explore ent…

Jihad, Captivity and Ransoming: Lessons from the Sokoto Caliphate by Dr. Jennifer Lofkrantz
University Events
Who is a Muslim? What is the role of Islam in the state? And who gets to decide?
These are some of the issues that Dr. Jennifer Lofkrantz, Associate Professor of History and Chair of the Global Studies Centre at Gulf University for Science and Technology, Kuwait explores in her book "Ransoming Prisoners in Precolonial Muslim Western Africa" through interweaving a history of Muslim West African intellectual thought on issues of legal and illegal enslavement and remedies for illegal enslavement since the 1500s through a history of the complex social, political, and religious change of the 19th century jihad era.
As she discusses in the book, these basic questions and debates on what to do with captives continue to reverberate today in northern Nigeria and the Sahel in the Salafi-Jihadist related conflicts.

Theater Emory: Peerless
University Events
Theater Emory 2025-2026 Season
$20 | Emory Students Free
In this darkly funny satire, twin Asian American sisters, brilliant, ambitious, and inseparable, have dedicated their lives to gaining admission to “The College.” However, when the coveted early decision spot is awarded to someone else, the competition turns deadly. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Peerless offers a razor-sharp exploration of academic pressure, identity, and the lengths we’ll go for success. Wickedly clever and bitingly relevant, this play delves into the heart of ambition with humor, horror, and a candid examination of what it takes to win.

27 – Dec. 20, 2025. CGSW Seminar Series presents - Bill Gates Heroes of the Field - Dr. Shannon Yee
University Events
Indoor plumbing and sewer sanitation technologies have enabled healthy and productive lives for billions residing in developed nations. However, globally there are ~3.6B people without access to improved sanitation. This is largely because the infrastructure to provide connected sanitary sewers and centralized treatment facilities is too expensive for those living in poverty. For the last decade, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has championed this global equity issue though the reinvent the toilet challenge (RTTC) initiative. Through this program, several success stories have emerged resulting in container-sized treatment systems that process waste at the community level. However, the single-user reinvented toilet (SURT) has remained elusive. This SURT essentially needs to do everything that a large container or centralized sewage treatment facility does, but within the space constraints of the toilet and washing machine. Additionally, this must be accomplished at a cost that is acceptable to the wor…

Entangled Histories: Photography and Textile in Africa
University Events
Photography has since its inception been defined in relation to other media. In 1834, five years before the public announcement of the invention of the daguerreotype, Henry Fox Talbot was experimenting with what he called "photogenic drawings," literally sketches produced by light. From the 19th century onward, photography was regularly compared to painting. In 1981, Peter Galassi famously sought to settle the debate with his MoMA exhibition arguing that photography was "the legitimate child of the Western pictorial tradition." Scholars have discussed photography's affinity to sculpture in their shared desire to visualize three-dimensionality, and enable reproducibility. What if photography’s history was entangled with that of textile? Which artists, techniques, and aesthetics would become visible?

Six midwestern men — all survivors of childhood sexual assault at the hands of Catholic priests and clergy — come together to direct a drama therapy-inspired experiment designed to collectively work through their trauma. As part of a radically collaborative filmmaking process, they create fictional scenes based on memories, dreams and experiences, meant to explore the church rituals, culture and hierarchies that enabled silence around their abuse. In the face of a failed legal system, we watch these men reclaim the spaces that allowed their assault, revealing the possibility for catharsis and redemption through a new-found fraternity.

27 – Dec. 20, 2025. Theoretical reflections on social foraging
Abstract: Foraging is a ubiquitous behavior performed by all animals as search for food is crucial for survival. When the animal is foraging throughout its environment searching for resources, it is employing a variety of cognitive computations from decision making to planning to learning in addition to adjusting its bodily dynamics. Foraging as a behavior allows studying cognitive dynamics in a natural context and opens up the opportunity for evolutionary comparison across species. In this talk, I will provide a quantitative framework for an integrative understanding of patch foraging focusing on recently developed mechanistic theoretical models, that delineate the potential decision strategies an animal might employ to decide when and how to leave a patch of food across environments with different statistics. I will discuss how these models can be extended to the social foraging realm. These theoretical models can potentially be fit to field data from a variety of…

Laszlo-Excalibur Lecture: A Conversation with Emily Hauser, author of Penelope's Bones
University Events
Achilles. Agamemnon. Odysseus. Hector. The lives of these and many other men in the greatest epics of ancient Greece have been pored over endlessly in the past three millennia. But these are not just tales about heroic men. There are scores of women as well—complex, fascinating women whose stories have gone unexplored for far too long.
Join the Carlos for a conversation between award-winning classicist and historian Emily Hauser and Curator of Greek and Roman Art Ruth Allen, as they discuss Hauser’s most recent publication Penelope’s Bones: A New History of Homer’s World through the Women Written Out of It, in which Hauser weaves together literary and archaeological evidence, illuminating the rich, intriguing lives of the real women behind Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.
Unearthing the richly textured lives of women in Bronze Age Greece—the era of Homer’s heroes, we come to understand the everyday lives and experiences of the real women who stand behind the legends of Helen, Briseis, Cassandra, Aphrodite, Circe,…

JWJI Colloquium featuring Hilary Green
University Events
Talk Title: Towards a New Future in Civil War Memory Studies
Since historians David Blight and Barbara Gannon have published their essential works, few Civil War Memory Studies scholars have seriously considered the memory work of ordinary African Americans and how they chose to remember the Civil War in their communities. Since the Black Civil War experience was not monolithic, African Americans collectively built a commemorative culture and traditions recognizing the diverse experience while countering white anti-Black collective Civil War remembrances that reduced them to stereotypes and second-class American citizens. Drawing on research from her recent book, Green proposes a new future in Civil War Memory Studies that embraces new methodologies, sources, and approaches for understanding the scope of African Americans’ Civil War commemorative culture.

27 – Dec. 20, 2025. University Events
2025–2026 Emory Department of Music, Free Event/No Tickets Required
Emory Jazz Combos and Big Band features Emory University Jazz students under the direction of Gary Motley, Randy Hunter, Chris Riggenbach, and Penelope Williams.
The Emory Jazz Combos give students an opportunity to explore many facets of improvisation in a small group setting. Usually consisting of five to eight members, the primary focus of these groups is on gaining experience in improvising and soloing for each participant. Our groups promote individual expression as well as group interaction and cohesiveness. These ensembles regularly perform for many events both on and off campus.
The Emory Big Band gives students an opportunity to develop their performance skills in a large ensemble setting. Performance literature ranges from traditional big band music to works by many of today's composers and arrangers. In addition to annual performances, the big band is regularly showcased during the Emory Jazz Fest.

Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public.
27 – Dec. 20, 2025.
