JWJI Colloquium featuring Julian Wamble
University Events
Talk Title: We Choose You: How Black Voters Decide Which Candidates to Support
In this talk, Dr. Julian Wamble draws from his forthcoming book We Choose You (Cambridge University Press) to examine the sophisticated process of Black voter candidate selection. Challenging the common assumption that Black voters automatically support Black politicians, Dr. Wamble explores the broader considerations—such as partisanship, gender, and perceptions of personal sacrifice—that shape electoral decision-making.
Using original experimental research with Black respondents, Dr. Wamble demonstrates that Black voters prioritize candidates who demonstrate a commitment to advancing the community’s interests, regardless of race. By complicating conventional views of identity and representation, We Choose You provides a powerful new framework for understanding how Black voters evaluate candidates and how identity, sacrifice, and accountability intersect in American politics.

"From Fossils to Function: Combining Deep Learning and Morpometrics to Unravel the Evolution of Hum
University Events
Human locomotion is unique among primates: we are the only species that habitually walks on two legs and no longer rely on climbing. Reconstructing how and why this behavior evolved is a data challenge—our fossil record is fragmentary, and the signals of locomotion are encoded in bone. Trabecular bone, the spongy tissue inside joints, forms a living record of how forces act on the skeleton during life. Using high-resolution CT imaging, deep learning, and computational modeling, I have developed new tools to extract and interpret these signals from damaged fossils, linking 3D bone structure to biomechanical function and revealing how our ancestors once moved.

Computer simulation studies of disordered magnets
Impurities and disorder are omnipresent in condensed-matter systems in the laboratory. Their effects are especially pronounced in the vicinity of phase transitions, such as the liquid-gas or ferromagnetic ordering transitions. Due to large fluctuations and slow dynamics, the study of such systems with the help of computer simulations often is particularly challenging. Magnets with frozen-in impurities are among the hardest known computational problems, where the time taken to find the low-energy states doubles with every added lattice site. As a result, computational studies of relevant system sizes are normally prohibitively difficult. With a method adapted from the problem of automatically dividing an image into adjacent uniformly colored areas - a standard task in machine vision - it is now possible for the first time to study in depth a general class of magnetic systems with multiple local states. Their magnetic ordering at low temperatures shows a previo…

"Returning to Classic 'Mystical Theology': Why Contemplation and Apophasis Are Important for Contemporary Political Theology"
Candler welcomes systematic theologian and philosopher of religion Sarah Coakley as the 2025-2026 Alonzo L. McDonald Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Life and Teachings of Jesus and Their Impact on Culture. In two public lectures set for October, Coakley will explore why it is that “mysticism” still fascinates many, both inside and outside the churches. She will also address the 20th century’s development of several influential theories of mysticism that distorted the goals of classic Christian “mystical theology” while simultaneously adding new insights which endure.
In this second of the two McDonald lectures, Coakley will probe the origins of “Mystical Theology” in the patristic period and beyond, and compare its demanding ascetical vision with current perceptions of mysticism in the churches and wider culture. She will argue that classic apophatic contemplation has, today,…

Unfurl: Survivals, Sorrows, and Dreaming

Unfurl: Survivals, Sorrows, and Dreaming
Hosted by Dr. Alix Olson
October 22 - 7 pm - Humanities 202
Emory Studies in Sexualities program is hosting Eli Clare, a traveling poet, storyteller, and social justice educator. Clare is a pivotal figure at the intersections of queer, trans, anti-racist and disability studies, and his work has shaped multiple generations of scholarship and activism. His seminal book Exile and Pride broke ground in articulating the complex entanglements of disability, queerness, class, and rurality. Since then, Clare has continued to push the boundaries of political and theoretical discourse on embodiment, environment, and justice. Clare’s newest book, Unfurl: Survivals, Survivals, and Dreaming, extends his long-standing commitments by offering urgent reflections on resilience, vulnerability, and dreaming otherwise in the face of violence and precarity.

CMBC LUNCH | N Apurva Ratan Murty and Jared Medina "To Predict or To Explain"
University Events
To Predict or To Explain, RSVP requiredWhat is even the point of our science? Is it to build models that predict what brains and minds will do even if we don’t fully understand how, or is it to explain the inner workings of the mind and brain, even if our models fall short of accurate predictions or practical mental health benefits.
In this debate-styled meeting, Jared Medina will argue for explanation as the soul of science. Without causal, interpretable, mechanistic accounts, we’re just playing with high-tech models and curve-fitting. For him the goal of our science is about generating understanding in human interpretable terms.
On the opposing side, Apurva Ratan Murty will champion prediction as the only reliable test of scientific understanding. If your theory can’t predict new data, it has limited value. Models that generalize, however messy or uninterpretable, are the real engines of discovery and measure of progress. This brings us to the core of the conflict. Is prediction sufficient for…

2025 Digital Equities Lecture: "Touch, Access, and the Digital Archive"
University Events
The digital humanities is today overwhelmingly visual. Even as DH rightly boasts its achievements in dramatically increasing access to and analysis of cultural material, the field has also inadvertently narrowed our sensory access to information. We must add new dimensions to a field structured predominately by the flat screen. This talk takes up touch as a means of complicating the governing logic of many notions of access—that information can be translated directly between the senses. As an epistemological intervention, a multisensory approach promises new ways to address sensorial history and to engage people’s diverse sensory abilities and experiences—past, present, and future. As an ethical intervention, it emphasizes our responsibility to evaluate carefully the structures of digital accessibility and to increase access for all. This talk is the product of collaborative work undertaken especially with David Weimer (Newberry Library) and with the Perkins School for the Blind.

Emory Wind Ensemble—TIMELESS
University Events
2025–2026 Emory Department of Music
Free Event/No Tickets Required
Join the Emory Wind Ensemble for a concert of famous melodies from ancient Ireland to contemporary Brazil.
Colm O’Hara—the newly appointed conductor of Emory Wind Ensemble—shares that “the theme of the concert is famous, timeless melodies—Holst's Jupiter, Copland’s Variations on a Shaker Melody, a beautiful Siciliano on solo trumpet by Malcolm Arnold, some haunting Ravel, and an exciting, almost-completely eighth-note melody written by Brazilian genius Hermeto Pascoal. We also have a suite of three Irish folk melodies, accompanied by a reading of the poems by Seamus Heaney. It should be a very enjoyable concert for all."

Talk Title: The Politics of Skin Tone
Research shows that differences in skin tone are linked with significant differences in life experiences. On average, African Americans with darker skin have lower wages, less wealth, worse health outcomes, and more negative criminal justice experiences than lighter-skinned Africans Americans. Do these experiences influence political identities and attitudes? Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. CMBC LECTURE | David Sloan Wilson "Mind, Brain and Culture from a Generalized Darwinian Perspective"
University Events
Mind, Brain and Culture from a Generalized Darwinian Perspective
Generalized Darwinism refers to any process combining the three ingredients of variation, selection, and replication (VSR). It is both old and new: Old, because all the insights associated with Darwinism during its first few decades were in ignorance of the proximate mechanisms of VSR. New, because with the advent of Mendelian genetics, the entire study of evolution became focused on genes, to the exclusion of other VSR processes. A return to generalized Darwinism didn’t commence until the closing decades of the 20th century and is now in full swing, with profound implications for our understanding of mind, brain, and culture.

CMBC LECTURE | Deepu Murty "Understanding, Remembering, and Communicating Threatening Events"
University Events
Understanding, Remembering, and Communicating Threatening EventsThreat alters how we represent information. Under threat, individuals tend to prioritize central details at the expense of surrounding contextual information—a shift that reflects and drives changes in medial temporal lobe (MTL) and cortical network dynamics. This talk will explore how threat reshapes the neural architecture supporting event comprehension, which has downstream consequences on how this information is stored in long-term memory. Moreover, we will show how these shifts in brain networks change how threatening experiences are communicated to others. By examining the interplay between emotion, memory, and social dynamics, we highlight mechanisms through which threat can distort shared understanding and social transmission of information. These findings have broad implications for domains ranging from eyewitness testimony to psychotherapy, which both rely on the accurate communication of threatening events.

JWJI Colloquium featuring Carolyn Liebler
University Events
Talk Title: Mixed Heritage in the Family: Racial Identity, Spousal Choice, and Child-Rearing
In this talk, Dr. Carolyn A. Liebler draws from her co-authored book Mixed Heritage in the Family to explore how racially mixed people navigate racial boundaries in choosing spouses and raising children. Using census data and interviews with Asian-White, Black-White, and American Indian/Alaska Native-White individuals, Dr. Liebler examines how identity choices intersect with spousal selection and the ways parents racially identify and raise their children.
The research highlights the diversity within mixed-heritage families, showing that having a White spouse does not necessarily mean disconnection from non-White heritage, and that White spouses vary in how they engage with their partner’s minority ancestry. The study also finds that when parents share a minority racial heritage, couples often lean into their shared “family race,” guiding their parenting choices and instilling racial pride in their children. JWJI Colloquium featuring Joan Flores-Villalobos
University Events
Talk Title: The Silver Women: How Black Women’s Labor Made the Panama Canal
The construction of the Panama Canal is typically viewed as a marvel of American ingenuity. What is less understood is the project’s dependence on the labor of Black migrant women. The Silver Women argues that Black Caribbean women made the canal construction possible by providing the indispensable everyday labor of social reproduction. They built a provisioning economy that fed, housed, and cared for the racially segregated workforce, in effect subsidizing the construction effort and its racial calculus. But while also subject to this discrimination, Afro-Caribbean women found ways to subvert the legal, moral, and economic parameters imperial authorities sought to impose on Black migrant laborers. This talk tracks Black women’s important labor of social reproduction, while also excavating their strategies of claims-making, kinship, community building, and market adaptation that helped them navigate the contradictions and violence o…

Carlos Reads Book Club: Spiral to the Stars
University Events
“We constantly urge the nation-state to honor grievance claims. However, if we imagine our relatives not as subjects of the state but as the protagonists of a star story, or of a modern-day migration from the country to the city, to the in-between places, it changes the energy of the experiences that fill the spaces of our lives. They fill with love, energy, power, and self-determination. That is este-cate sovereignty, and it is a form of sovereignty that those who labor for freedom can embrace.” - Laura Harjo
All communities are teeming with energy, spirit, and knowledge. In Spiral to the Stars, geographer Laura Harjo activates this dynamism to discuss Indigenous community planning from a Mvskoke (Muscogee) perspective. Harjo weaves Mvskoke narratives throughout the text, vividly demonstrating that theories come from lived and felt experiences, and that Mvskoke communities have what they need to dream, imagine, speculate, and activate the wishes of ancestors, contemporary kin, and future relatives.…

Theater Emory: Peerless
University Events
Theater Emory 2025-2026 Season
$20 | Emory Students Free
In this darkly funny satire, twin Asian American sisters, brilliant, ambitious, and inseparable, have dedicated their lives to gaining admission to “The College.” However, when the coveted early decision spot is awarded to someone else, the competition turns deadly. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Peerless offers a razor-sharp exploration of academic pressure, identity, and the lengths we’ll go for success. Wickedly clever and bitingly relevant, this play delves into the heart of ambition with humor, horror, and a candid examination of what it takes to win.
