Honors Concert: Nadia Piecyk

University Events 2025–2026 Emory Dance Free, No Tickets Required Emory Dance major Nadia Piecyk’s research is grounded in a view of disability as inherently queer. Her honors thesis project investigates how the body-centricity of disability and queerness disrupts normative hierarchies that privilege mind over body and stability over fluidity. Both disability and queerness are subject to external scrutiny, medicalization, and societal expectations of performance, yet both challenge normative expectations of embodiment and identity, existing in the liminal space between visibility and invisibility. Given that queerness and disability are both so “bodied,” how do hypervisibility and invisibility show up on the stage?  Recommended parking for Schwartz Center events is the Fishburne Parking Deck (free for events after 6 p.m. and on weekends). JWJI Colloquium featuring Kristin Waters

University Events Talk Title: Maria W. Stewart and the Roots of Black Political Thought In this talk, Dr. Waters explores the life and writings of Maria W. Stewart (1803-1879), “the first Black woman political writer” in the United States and a foundational voice of Black feminist thought. Throughout the 18th century, African American lecturers, ministers, poets, essayists, and activists set the stage for the organized civil rights movement to follow. Vector Media

University Events It is difficult to overstate the importance of text and image embedding in contemporary machine learning. Yet many current critiques of artificial intelligence overlook this paradigm in their efforts to understand generativity as a cultural phenomenon. In this talk, I present a new theory and history of embedding as a medium. I argue that, whereas previous technological revolutions produced new media on the basis of existing ones, contemporary machine learning systems instead aim to dissolve prior media into a universal space of commensurability. This transformation becomes clearer when embedding is situated within the history of computer vision, where it emerges as the provisional endpoint of a longer series of attempts to theorize intelligence as compression. Environmental Justice in Italy: A Black Italian Perspective

University Events This talk will explore the complex and often intersectional challenges of racial and environmental justice in contemporary Italy, a nation whose self-image as racially homogenous is increasingly at odds with its diverse reality. Drawing on a Black Italian activist perspective, the presentation will analyze how Italy's colonial heritage and restrictive citizenship laws contribute to systemic racial inequalities that manifest in various forms of exploitation. This exploitation is particularly stark in the agricultural sector, where the prestigious 'Made in Italy' brand often obscures the severe labor and environmental abuses associated with "caporalato" (illegal gang master system) and the marginalization of migrant workers. This discussion seeks to uncover the deep connections between race, labor, and environmental crisis in Italy, in order to move beyond uncritical sustainability efforts to achieve a more equitable and anti-racist future. Digging Homer: Iklaina, a Lost Capital of the Mycenaean World

University Events The world of the Mycenaeans still holds many surprises. Recent excavations at Iklaina have brought to light a lost capital of the Mycenaean state of Pylos. Its massive Cyclopean walls and monumental buildings dominated the surrounding landscape for centuries, remaining visible long after the Bronze Age had ended. These enduring ruins preserved powerful memories of the Mycenaean past that later found expression in the emerging traditions of epic song. Join Michael Cosmopoulos, excavator of Iklaina, and Hellenic Government-Karakas Foundation Endowed Chair in Greek Studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, for a lecture on recent discoveries at Iklaina and how archaeology, landscape, and memory help us understand the emergence of Greek epic poetry.  This program is co-sponsored by The Center for Hellenic Studies at Georgia State University and Emory University's program of Mediterranean Archaeology.  It is free and open to the public. Event Location: Carlos Museum, Ackerman Hall. Department / Organization: Carlos Museum. Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join. Tuesday, March 31, 2026, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

At Civility's Edge: Ethics and Intolerance

University Events Tolerance stretches only so far. In which ways are the limits of tolerance fixed and unchangeable? Or do we manufacture those edges when we refuse to accept certain differences—of belief, opinion, practices, peoples? If intolerance is willfully made, which values justify its shape? If intolerance is more fixed and objective, what can/should we do about it? When our professions/guilds/traditions think about intolerance, what—and who—do we think about? In an age of profound compassion and baseless degradation, we must seriously consider our role in fostering—and controlling—intolerance. Join us for a heartfelt conversation about civility’s edge. University Event Topic: A Year of Compassion. Community. Politics. Religion & Ethics. Department / Organization: Center for Ethics. Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush

University Events Emory Cinematheque: The Gold Rush Directed by Charles Chaplin, 1925 | 96 min. 1920s silent comedy was America’s gift to the world, and Charlie Chaplin’s film about the Tramp’s adventures in the frozen north remains the peak of his considerable 1920s achievements. He had solved the challenge of combining stand-alone comic episodes into a fully realized narrative and created a fully realized fictional world. Chaplin remains the greatest screen performer in cinema history, and this film—for which he wrote the script, the music and which he directed--showcases his trademark inventiveness via the imaginative transformation of objects, hilarious slapstick, as well as The Tramp’s enduring, endearing yearning for love and acceptance. Film Screening: La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty)

University Events For decades, journalist Jep Gambardella has charmed and seduced his way through the glittering nightlife of Rome. Since the legendary success of his only novel, he has been a permanent fixture in the city’s literary and elite social circles. But on his sixty-fifth birthday, Jep unexpectedly finds himself taking stock of his life, turning his cutting wit on himself and his contemporaries, and looking past the lavish nightclubs, parties, and cafés to find Rome itself, in all its monumental glory: a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty. Featuring sensuous cinematography, a lush score, and an award-winning central performance by the great Toni Servillo, this transporting experience by the brilliant Italian director Paolo Sorrentino is a breathtaking Felliniesque tale of decadence and lost love. 2013. 142 minutes. Italian with English subtitles.  Achille Castaldo, assistant professor of Italian, will introduce the film, and a back talkback session will be led by Ruth Allen, curator of Greek and Roman… Event Location: Carlos Museum, Ackerman Hall. CMBC LECTURE | Raphaël Julliard "The Creative Engine and the Sense of Rightness"

University Events “The Creative Engine and the Sense of Rightness”My research operates at the intersection of anthropology, the psychology of creativity, and micro-phenomenology. It is driven by a central question: in the uncertainty of the creative act, how do creators know when it works? While traditional approaches often rely on retrospective reconstruction, my work focuses on the "creative engine": the real-time feedback loop between Action (what the maker does) and Affect (how the emerging form acts back upon the maker). I posit that creativity is not a cognitive planning process, but a navigational skill steered by a pre-reflective affective criterion—a felt sense of fitness we conceptualize as "Rightness"—guiding the artist between the risks. To study this, I have moved from historical analysis to experimental ethnography, developing a novel methodology—The Researcher-As-Obstacle (RAO)—designed to investigate the creative mind in action. My goal is to establish a rigorous anthropology of this navigational competence,… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. All About Physical Therapy: What is It, and Should You Try It?

University Events When you’re dealing with muscle or joint pain, how do you usually handle it? Do you rest and take a break from your usual exercise? Take over-the-counter or prescription pain medication? Turn to a heating pad or ice, or seek out a physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, or other in-person treatments? These are all valid options. But they generally overlook the fact that regular, consistent exercises that are tailored to your specific pain condition are the best way to keep your muscles and joints healthy over time and soothe pain flares when they do happen. Presented by a Hinge Health expert physical therapist, this event will discuss the benefits of virtual physical therapy programs, how they differ from traditional in-person physical therapy, and how Hinge Health can help you reduce back, joint, and muscle pain. 3 things you will take away from this event: - What virtual physical therapy includes - How it's similar and different from traditional in-person physical therapy - How Hinge Health's… Online Location: https://hingehealth.zoom.us/webinar/register/9617625361505/WN_5u1clSOiT2ONvm6UfZ-O9A#/registration. Emory Cinematheque: Sense and Sensibility

University Events Emory Cinematheque: Sense and Sensibility Directed by Ang Lee, 1995 | 136 min. Emma Thompson’s perceptive and witty Oscar-winning screenplay provided the foundation for this outstanding adaptation of Jane Austen’s first novel. We remain always at the side of the dispossessed Dashwood sisters, especially the practical Elinor (Thompson) and the passionate Marianne (Kate Winslet), as they debate how best to approach matters of the heart, over which they, like all of Austen’s heroines, have so little control. Boasting a fine cast of British actors--including the three romcom heartthrobs Hugh Grant, Greg Wise and Alan Rickman--the film perfectly marries Ang Lee’s penchant for long takes and stories of repressed emotion to late 18th century British society. In the transition of handwritten books to books printed with moveable type on common presses in the middle of the fifteenth century, the most frequently used substrate – i.e. handmade paper – played, in many ways, an important role. It is generally known that in the beginning paper sheets used for printed books were rather thick, and that paper became thinner over time. DADA toDAy?! Symposium and Art Event

University Events Born in the convulsions of WWI, DADA never intended to name yet another artistic movement. What took place under the percussion of these two syllables —“DA DA”— was instead a surge of experimentations that shook the ground of established conventions. This symposium will trace the repercussions of DADA experiments which opened and keep opening a path today for other experimental gestures which do not mimic DADA or even claim to be inspired by Dada but extend its striking power. Examining Boston's Brazilian, Dominican, and Salvadoran communities, this book provides an exhaustive analysis spanning nearly a decade to highlight the profound impacts of the Affordable Care Act and subsequent policy shifts on these marginalized groups. Emory Cinematheque: The Lady Eve

University Events Emory Cinematheque: The Lady Eve Directed by Preston Sturges, 1941 | 94 min. With The Lady Eve, the brilliant writer-director Preston Sturges created the Hollywood screwball comedy to top them all. It’s full of impossible situations, clever, double-entendre dialogue (necessary in the era of the Production Code) and plentiful pratfalls. When con artist Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) seduces and then falls for an out-of-his-depth snake-studying heir Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) on an ocean liner, she gets more than she bargained for and resolves to set things right. Boasting a cast of Sturges comic regulars, as well as the always delightful Charles Coburn as Jean’s deceitful father “Colonel” Harrington, The Lady Eve was written expressly for Stanwyck and she goes to town in this “woman on top” romp. Meanwhile Fonda demonstrates his comic chops to the fullest. Who knew? Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Wednesday, April 15, 2026, 7:30 PM. White Hall 208 | 301 Dowman Dr.

We find that four dates dominate a significant proportion of the dataset, indicating that articles across these languages exhibit… University Event Topic: Data Science. Artificial Intelligence. Emory Cinematheque: The Rules of the Game

University Events Emory Cinematheque: The Rules of the Game Directed by Jean Renoir, 1939 | 110 min. Jean Renoir’s satire of the French bourgeoisie “dancing on the edge of a volcano” (e.g. the Fascist threats at its borders) is the crowning achievement of his golden decade of filmmaking in France (though a case can be made for his magnificent anti-war Grand Illusion). Classically structured, Rules transforms from an urbane comedy of manners among an amoral, adulterous group of mostly wealthy Parisians into a fast-paced, upstairs/downstairs slapstick farce when all hell breaks loose at a costume ball at a Loire chateau. Renoir here achieves the height of naturalism through his signature style--complex staging captured by his frequent use of a mobile camera and long takes. The film is imbued with Renoir’s generous affection for all his characters, no matter how badly they behave. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Wednesday, April 22, 2026, 7:30 PM. White Hall 208 | 301 Dowman Dr.
