TMLS Seminar

University Events Modern day oracles or bullshit machines: Helping students learn to thrive in a ChatGPT world Large language models (LLMs) have upended education. Students and faculty alike are struggling with the pace of change. We have developed a general education course entitled Modern Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines, designed to help college and high school students to reflect on what it means to be human in an LLM-saturated world. The course takes a collaborative learning approach to a fundamental question grounded in the humanities: how can we learn and thrive with LLMs? In this talk, I provide an overview of the course, discuss what we have learned about teaching undergraduates to think about what it means to be a learner, scholar, and human being in a ChatGPT world, and reflect on the challenges of teaching about this rapidly-evolving technology. CANCELLED-DSci Happy Hour with Jo Guldi

University Events The Dates that Dominate Wikipedia's Telling of Global History - Making global histories is difficult. Research in global history has grappled for at least twenty years with the limitations that available methods pose to explaining global movements, connections, and phenomena (Clarence-Smith, Pomerance and Vries, 2006; Gänger and Jürgen Osterhammel, 2024). While these limitations can be pragmatic—from archival access and restrictions to individual scholars’ limited linguistic backgrounds—current theories in global history are most useful for national, regional, or small-scale comparative scopes rather than the large-scale global resonance of historical phenomena. Here, we introduce a comparably large-scale and computational approach by looking for convergences and divergences in the dates mentioned across hundreds of thousands of Wikipedia articles written in hundreds of languages. We find that four dates dominate a significant proportion of the dataset, indicating that articles across these languages exhibit… University Event Topic: Data Science. Artificial Intelligence. Estimation of Games under No Regret: Structural Econometrics for AI

University Events We develop a method to recover primitives from data generated by artificial intelligence (AI) agents in strategic environments such as online marketplaces and auctions. Building on how leading online learning AIs are designed, we assume agents minimize their regret. Under asymptotic no regret, we show that time-average play converges to the set of Bayes coarse correlated equilibrium (BCCE) predictions. Our econometric procedure is based on BCCE restrictions and convergence rates of regret minimizing AIs. We apply the method to pricing data in a digital marketplace for used smartphones. Emory Cinematheque: The Rules of the Game

University Events Emory Cinematheque: The Rules of the Game Directed by Jean Renoir, 1939 | 110 min. Jean Renoir’s satire of the French bourgeoisie “dancing on the edge of a volcano” (e.g. the Fascist threats at its borders) is the crowning achievement of his golden decade of filmmaking in France (though a case can be made for his magnificent anti-war Grand Illusion). Classically structured, Rules transforms from an urbane comedy of manners among an amoral, adulterous group of mostly wealthy Parisians into a fast-paced, upstairs/downstairs slapstick farce when all hell breaks loose at a costume ball at a Loire chateau. Renoir here achieves the height of naturalism through his signature style--complex staging captured by his frequent use of a mobile camera and long takes. The film is imbued with Renoir’s generous affection for all his characters, no matter how badly they behave. Free event and open to public. University Event Topic: Arts. Department / Organization: Arts at Emory. Film & Media. Event Open To: All (Public). Wednesday, April 22, 2026, 7:30 PM. White Hall 208 | 301 Dowman Dr.

One Crisis After Another: What Can the Enrollment Timing of a 40-Year Philippine Birth Cohort Teach

University Events The Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey enrolled all pregnancies across 33 randomly selected neighborhoods of Metropolitan Cebu, Philippines between May 1983 and April 1984, following mothers and offspring for four decades. Yet the turbulent context into which this cohort was born has never been examined in relation to birth and long-term outcomes. Abolition and Slavery in 18c Philosophy

University Events Recent studies of eighteenth-century philosophy have generated incisive questions about the limitations of the moral and political insight of British and European philosophers who were invested in (or silent about) transatlantic slavery. During this period, the rapidly expanding traffic and enslavement of African people appears as a topic of common knowledge and discussion in religion, law, economics, literature, and drama. Writings by enslaved and self-emancipated women and men attested to the violence and degradation of the conditions of slavery, as well as to the hypocrisy of much of Western moral and political discourse. This symposium focuses on slavery and abolition both as and in conversation with eighteenth-century philosophy. Despite it seemingly disciplinary focus the workshop will call form interdisciplinary perspectives on the period in order to create a dialogue on slavery and its intellectual legacy across various research methods, texts, and disciplinary orientations.
