"Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd" (exhibition series)
University Events
**Weekend hours vary; closed on holidays, for details, see visitor hours at https://libraries.emory.edu/hours, Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd explores how the typewriter has radically transformed storytelling, literature, and visual art over nearly two centuries. The exhibition takes seemingly disparate works created on a typewriter – a typescript draft of The Wiz, a retyped diptych of An American Marriage, Vietnam-era protest flyers made by Emory students, the first edition of Bram Stoker’s Dracula – and puts them in conversation with one another.
This exhibition demonstrates that the typewriter is not only a tool for efficient writing, but a technology that heralded a new age of storytelling, imaginative expression, and political resistance. Featuring literary archives from Emory University’s Rose Library and Tim Youd’s distinctive typed diptychs and ribbon-inspired art, Striking Characters traces how the typewriter was used to create works that defined the…

Science in Action: Crafting Clear Messages for Broader Impact
University Events
Your work is important and can make a difference in many people's lives. But first, they have to know about it, and second, they have to be able to use it. Science for Georgia has been helping to get science out of the lab and onto the streets for over five years. In this webinar, we will focus on identifying who your audience is, why your research is relevant to them, what the main recommended actions are, and how they can implement lessons learned. We will walk through an example of creating a pithy one-pager based on a recent publication, and how you can discuss the one-pager with physicians and patients.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to: identify the relevant audience for your research, discuss with physicians and/or patients concrete action items based on your research, and create a pithy one-pager summarizing lessons learned and action steps.

Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (exhibition)

The founding question for this event is thus: Beyond honest credits, how does one acknowledge, even honor the artists and cultural traditions that any artist inevitably relies upon in generating their own work?
University Event Topic: Arts. Community. Humanities. Religion & Ethics. Purpose Project. Department / Organization: Center for Ethics. The Kronos Quartet released the album “Long Time Passing” in 2020, a celebration of musician and activist Pete Seeger, which involved collaboration with the American Folklife Center. And the quartet’s ongoing Kronos 50 For The Future initiative aims to help young amateur and early-c… Event Open To: All (Public). Cost: Free. Ethics Across Traditions: Atonement & Repentance
University Events
Wrongdoing, suffering, and repairing are part and parcel of the human condition. Yet these are variably understood across traditions. Some traditions speak of such experiences in terms of transgression and atonement, others use terms like sin, guilt, and repentance. Forgiveness and reconciliation, dignity and humility, vulnerability and trust mix and mingle in this eternal pursuit to mend profound wounds. Come and hear this conversation between scholars of religion, theology, and ethics.

Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (exhibition)

An Evening with Sancho... And Me?
University Events
Join the Fox Center for our inaugural Life/Story theme year event— a keynote with beloved British actor Paterson Joseph as he brings his debut novel to life!
"The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho: A Novel," named one of NPR's Books We Love, is a lush and immersive tale of adventure, artistry, romance, and freedom set in eighteenth-century England and based on a true story. How does a man born on a slave ship go on to meet the king, write highly acclaimed music, become the first Black person to vote in Britain, and lead the fight to end slavery?
In this dynamic presentation, Joseph gives voice to Ignatius Sancho's interior life, bringing this important historical figure into view while reflecting on his own upbringing in London and the many ways in which we render life as art.
This event is open to all and free, tickets required.
Free tickets are available through the Schwartz Center Box Office online, by phone at (404) 727-5050, or in person.

Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (exhibition)
University Events

This exhibition demonstrates that the typewriter is not only a tool for efficient writing, but a technology that heralded a new age of storytelling, imaginative expression, and political resistance. Featuring literary archives from Emory University’s Rose Library and Tim Youd’s distinctive typed diptychs and ribbon-inspired art, Striking Characters traces how the typewriter was used to create works that defined the…

Artist Talk: Gonçalo Mabunda
University Events
Join artist Gonçalo Mabunda (Mozambique) for an artist talk about his work that explores the collective memory of his country and its transition from war to the absence of violence and ultimately to peace. Gonçalo was commissioned to transform weapons of war such as AK47s, rocket launchers, and pistols into objects of beauty which were used in Mozambique’s truth and reconciliation journey. His method of choice was and remains anthropomorphization of weapons to channel the multiplicity of human feelings released by the peace process. Gonçalo’s thrones and sculptures are held in many major museums and institutions across the globe.
This talk is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Peace, Reconciliation and the Potential for Transformation, at aKAZ!ATL on view during the month of October 2025, and Insistent Presence: Contemporary African Art from the Chazen Collection at the Carlos Museum, on view September 13 - December 14, 2025.

ENVS Seminar: Jonathon Keats
University Events
““Imagining Otherwise: Environmental Ethics, Art, and Alternative Futures"
Jonathon Keats is a globally recognized conceptual artist and experimental philosopher whose provocative body of work challenges conventional boundaries between art, science, ethics, and public imagination.
At a moment when dominant responses to ecological crises are constrained by technocratic or market-based logics, Keats will invite us to reimagine what counts as knowledge, responsibility, and possibility in environmental futures. His projects,
ranging from photosynthetic democracy and urban symbiosis to interspecies timekeeping, have been exhibited at leading museums and featured in outlets such as Nature, The Atlantic, and The New York Times. Keats’ work exemplifies the kind of radical interdisciplinarity that Emory seeks to cultivate.
