Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (daily exhibition)

University Events “Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. The exhibition brings together diverse works – from a draft of “The Wiz” and a first edition of “Dracula” to protest flyers and Tim Youd’s retyped diptychs – showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance. Drawing on Rose Library archives and Youd’s art, it traces the typewriter’s impact on the 20th century and beyond. Multiple typewriters from different decades will be on display as well. Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. Live musical performances will be added one day a week in the near future as Youd types; calendar entries will be updated when that happens. Exhibitions dates: Daily Aug. 27 – Dec. 20, 2025. Weekend hours vary; closed on holidays. For… University Event Topic: Academic Calendar. Alumni. Arts. Campus Life & Student Orgs. College. Community. Faculty. Graduate. Humanities. Ongoing Event. JWJI Colloquium featuring Nicole Yadon

University Events Talk Title: The Politics of Skin Tone Research shows that differences in skin tone are linked with significant differences in life experiences. On average, African Americans with darker skin have lower wages, less wealth, worse health outcomes, and more negative criminal justice experiences than lighter-skinned Africans Americans. Do these experiences influence political identities and attitudes? Drawing on 100 in-depth interviews and evidence from multiple surveys and a survey experiment, The Politics of Skin Tone investigates this question. Yadon conceptualizes skin tone as one facet of the multidimensional construct of race which powerfully influences racialized experiences. She finds that skin tone meaningfully correlates with political attitudes, particularly on issues where color-based disparities are well-known and most pronounced (e.g. criminal justice, jobs). Moreover, skin tone-related identity is meaningful to a sizable number of African Americans and, in turn, is strongly associated with politi… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Fine-tuning the Future: Embeddings and Digital Research Collections

University Events This talk examines case studies drawn from both European and American contexts that suggest possible areas of action: finding latent patterns in large-scale photographic collections; unifying archival metadata with transformers-based captioning for accessibility; and exploring 19th century painting styles with diffusion models. These critical engagements leverage models' analytic power — while sidestepping their commercial origins and presentist bias. In these examples I propose a significant new role for library and museum professionals, who are well positioned to engage in this labor with the materials they steward, describe, and make accessible. But these approaches may also prove useful for graduate students and faculty, who often serve as the curators of their own research datasets. University Event Topic: Data Science. South Asia Seminar

University Events Sonya Rhie Mace, George P. Bickford Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, will show how artists, patrons, and audiences experienced the ancient epic Ramayana in the royal Pahari courts of northern India during the late seventeenth to early eighteenth century. Her talk is based on a new reconstruction of the most extensive known series, the “Shangri” Ramayana of circa 1700, which prompts a reconsideration of Pahari painting practice more broadly.   This program is sponsored by the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies (MESAS), and co-sponsored by the Art History Department and the Michael C. Carlos Museum. Event Location: Ackerman Hall. Department / Organization: Carlos Museum. Membership Link: https://carlos.emory.edu/join. Monday, October 27, 2025, 5:00 PM – 6:15 PM.

Colloquium-Physics Department-Jay X Tang (Peking University)

University Events Bacterial Swarming-Collective Motion Frequently Altered by Collision and Fluid Flow Swarming is a prevalent form of bacterial collective motility. We study a species of gut bacteria, Enterobacter sp. SM3, which manifests strong swarming behavior. Our ongoing project is probing the SM3 swarm front on agar, a semi-solid substrate that provides nutrients for the bacterial growth. By depositing a fluid droplet at the swarm edge, a monolayer of swarming bacteria is observed. We track the motion of these swarming bacteria, to analyze their trajectories. We measure the velocities, orientations, and mean square displacements of all the bacteria tracked. We further analyze the association of bacteria in close proximity, particularly in connection with dynamic packs they form. We find that the collective motion of swarming is constantly altered by steric collision and the fluid flow caused by individually motile bacteria. Through these experiments, we gain insights on bacterial swarms as a form of active matter of bio… University Event Topic: Academics. Research. Science. School: Emory College. CMBC LECTURE | David Sloan Wilson "Mind, Brain and Culture from a Generalized Darwinian Perspective"

University Events Mind, Brain and Culture from a Generalized Darwinian Perspective Generalized Darwinism refers to any process combining the three ingredients of variation, selection, and replication (VSR). It is both old and new: Old, because all the insights associated with Darwinism during its first few decades were in ignorance of the proximate mechanisms of VSR. New, because with the advent of Mendelian genetics, the entire study of evolution became focused on genes, to the exclusion of other VSR processes. A return to generalized Darwinism didn’t commence until the closing decades of the 20th century and is now in full swing, with profound implications for our understanding of mind, brain, and culture. "A Cultural History of the Passport" A Lecture by Dr. Patrick Bixby

University Events Patrick Bixby’s latest book examines the passports of artists and intellectuals, ancient messengers and modern migrants, to reveal how these seemingly humble documents implicate us in larger narratives about identity, mobility, citizenship, and state authority. This concise cultural history takes the reader on a captivating journey from pharaonic Egypt and Han dynasty China to the passport controls and crowded refugee camps of today. Along the way, the book connects intimate stories of vulnerability and desire with vivid examples drawn from world cinema, literature, art, philosophy, and politics, highlighting the control that travel documents have over our bodies as we move around the globe. CMBC LECTURE | Deepu Murty "Understanding, Remembering, and Communicating Threatening Events"

University Events Understanding, Remembering, and Communicating Threatening EventsThreat alters how we represent information. Under threat, individuals tend to prioritize central details at the expense of surrounding contextual information—a shift that reflects and drives changes in medial temporal lobe (MTL) and cortical network dynamics. This talk will explore how threat reshapes the neural architecture supporting event comprehension, which has downstream consequences on how this information is stored in long-term memory. Moreover, we will show how these shifts in brain networks change how threatening experiences are communicated to others. By examining the interplay between emotion, memory, and social dynamics, we highlight mechanisms through which threat can distort shared understanding and social transmission of information. These findings have broad implications for domains ranging from eyewitness testimony to psychotherapy, which both rely on the accurate communication of threatening events. JWJI Colloquium featuring Carolyn Liebler

University Events Talk Title: Mixed Heritage in the Family: Racial Identity, Spousal Choice, and Child-Rearing In this talk, Dr. Carolyn A. Liebler draws from her co-authored book Mixed Heritage in the Family to explore how racially mixed people navigate racial boundaries in choosing spouses and raising children. Using census data and interviews with Asian-White, Black-White, and American Indian/Alaska Native-White individuals, Dr. Liebler examines how identity choices intersect with spousal selection and the ways parents racially identify and raise their children. The research highlights the diversity within mixed-heritage families, showing that having a White spouse does not necessarily mean disconnection from non-White heritage, and that White spouses vary in how they engage with their partner’s minority ancestry. The study also finds that when parents share a minority racial heritage, couples often lean into their shared “family race,” guiding their parenting choices and instilling racial pride in their children. JWJI Colloquium featuring Joan Flores-Villalobos

University Events Talk Title: The Silver Women: How Black Women’s Labor Made the Panama Canal The construction of the Panama Canal is typically viewed as a marvel of American ingenuity. What is less understood is the project’s dependence on the labor of Black migrant women. The Silver Women argues that Black Caribbean women made the canal construction possible by providing the indispensable everyday labor of social reproduction. They built a provisioning economy that fed, housed, and cared for the racially segregated workforce, in effect subsidizing the construction effort and its racial calculus. But while also subject to this discrimination, Afro-Caribbean women found ways to subvert the legal, moral, and economic parameters imperial authorities sought to impose on Black migrant laborers. This talk tracks Black women’s important labor of social reproduction, while also excavating their strategies of claims-making, kinship, community building, and market adaptation that helped them navigate the contradictions and violence o… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Carlos Reads Book Club: Spiral to the Stars

University Events “We constantly urge the nation-state to honor grievance claims. However, if we imagine our relatives not as subjects of the state but as the protagonists of a star story, or of a modern-day migration from the country to the city, to the in-between places, it changes the energy of the experiences that fill the spaces of our lives. They fill with love, energy, power, and self-determination. That is este-cate sovereignty, and it is a form of sovereignty that those who labor for freedom can embrace.”  - Laura Harjo    All communities are teeming with energy, spirit, and knowledge. In Spiral to the Stars, geographer Laura Harjo activates this dynamism to discuss Indigenous community planning from a Mvskoke (Muscogee) perspective. Harjo weaves Mvskoke narratives throughout the text, vividly demonstrating that theories come from lived and felt experiences, and that Mvskoke communities have what they need to dream, imagine, speculate, and activate the wishes of ancestors, contemporary kin, and future relatives.… Event Location: Board Room. Entangled Histories: Photography and Textile in Africa

University Events Photography has since its inception been defined in relation to other media. In 1834, five years before the public announcement of the invention of the daguerreotype, Henry Fox Talbot was experimenting with what he called "photogenic drawings," literally sketches produced by light. From the 19th century onward, photography was regularly compared to painting. In 1981, Peter Galassi famously sought to settle the debate with his MoMA exhibition arguing that photography was "the legitimate child of the Western pictorial tradition." Scholars have discussed photography's affinity to sculpture in their shared desire to visualize three-dimensionality, and enable reproducibility. What if photography’s history was entangled with that of textile? Which artists, techniques, and aesthetics would become visible?  Expanding from previous research on portraiture and photography in Senegal, Giulia Paoletti, associate professor in the Department of Art at the University of Virginia and visiting associate professor in the Depar… Event Location: Ackerman Hall. Ethics at the Movies: Procession

University Events Join for a screening of Procession and a Q&A with Director Robert Greene. Six midwestern men — all survivors of childhood sexual assault at the hands of Catholic priests and clergy — come together to direct a drama therapy-inspired experiment designed to collectively work through their trauma. As part of a radically collaborative filmmaking process, they create fictional scenes based on memories, dreams and experiences, meant to explore the church rituals, culture and hierarchies that enabled silence around their abuse. In the face of a failed legal system, we watch these men reclaim the spaces that allowed their assault, revealing the possibility for catharsis and redemption through a new-found fraternity. University Events Theater Emory 2025-2026 Season $20 | Emory Students Free In this darkly funny satire, twin Asian American sisters, brilliant, ambitious, and inseparable, have dedicated their lives to gaining admission to “The College.” However, when the coveted early decision spot is awarded to someone else, the competition turns deadly. Join the Carlos for a conversation between award-winning classicist and historian Emily Hauser and Curator of Greek and Roman Art Ruth Allen, as they discuss Hauser’s most recent publication Penelope’s Bones: A New History of Homer’s World through the Women Written Out of It, in which Hauser weaves together literary and archaeological evidence, illuminating the rich, intriguing lives of the real women behind Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. JWJI Colloquium featuring Hilary Green

University Events Talk Title: Towards a New Future in Civil War Memory Studies Since historians David Blight and Barbara Gannon have published their essential works, few Civil War Memory Studies scholars have seriously considered the memory work of ordinary African Americans and how they chose to remember the Civil War in their communities. Since the Black Civil War experience was not monolithic, African Americans collectively built a commemorative culture and traditions recognizing the diverse experience while countering white anti-Black collective Civil War remembrances that reduced them to stereotypes and second-class American citizens. Drawing on research from her recent book, Green proposes a new future in Civil War Memory Studies that embraces new methodologies, sources, and approaches for understanding the scope of African Americans’ Civil War commemorative culture.
