Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd (daily exhibition)

University Events “Striking Characters: Typewriters, Literary Worlds, and the Art of Tim Youd” explores how the typewriter reshaped storytelling, literature, and art over two centuries. The exhibition brings together diverse works – from a draft of “The Wiz” and a first edition of “Dracula” to protest flyers and Tim Youd’s retyped diptychs – showing the typewriter as a force for creativity, cultural change, and political resistance. Drawing on Rose Library archives and Youd’s art, it traces the typewriter’s impact on the 20th century and beyond. Multiple typewriters from different decades will be on display as well. Youd will give live performances at the typewriter from 1–5 p.m. every Sunday-Friday, Sept. 19 – Oct. 17. The exhibition and the performances are free and open to the public. Live musical performances will be added one day a week in the near future as Youd types; calendar entries will be updated when that happens. Exhibitions dates: Daily Aug. 27 – Dec. 20, 2025. JWJI Colloquium featuring Tracey Weldon

University Events Now That’s a Word! Middle Class African American English and the Strategic Construction of Identity Despite decades of sociolinguistic research, most studies of African American English (AAE) have focused on working-class speech communities, largely at the exclusion of middle-class speakers. As a result, little consideration has been given to the linguistic dexterity of middle-class speakers and the extent to which they draw on the full range of the AAE continuum in the construction of their identities. In this talk, Tracey Weldon explores some of the ways in which middle-class speakers make use of vernacular structural features, camouflaged features, and lexical and rhetorical expression, to strategically construct both race-based and class-based identities. University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. School: Emory College. Department / Organization: James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference. Colloquium-Physics Department - Chunhui (Rita) Du, Associate Professor (Georgia Tech)

University Events Quantum Sensing of Moiré Magnetism Moiré magnetism featured by stacking engineered atomic registry and lattice interactions has recently emerged as an appealing quantum state of matter at the forefront of condensed matter physics research. Nanoscale imaging of moiré magnets is highly desirable and serves as a prerequisite to investigate a broad range of intriguing physics underlying the interplay between topology, electronic correlations, and unconventional magnetism. In this talk, I will present our recent work on using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers to perform nanoscale quantum sensing and imaging of magnetic domains and spin fluctuations in twisted double trilayer (tDT) chromium triiodide CrI3. We show that intrinsic moiré domains of opposite magnetizations appear over arrays of moiré supercells in low-twist-angle tDT CrI3 [1]. In addition, spin fluctuations measured in tDT CrI3 reveal two distinct magnetic phase transitions with separate critical temperatures within a moiré supercell [2]. Mikhail Lokshin's Master and Margarita film and discussion

University Events The novel The Master and Margarita was not published for 25 years, long after Bulgakov died. Lokshin's film, one of Russia’s most successful and expensive films, opened in Russia in January 2024 to unparallelled interest and box office triumph. Awarded approximately $9 million (USD) by Russia’s State operated Cinema Fund in 2022 before the invasion of Ukraine, the film made over $26 million (USD) in its very first week of release. Then, Lokshin spoke out against the invasion of Ukraine, was accused of terrorism, had to leave the country while the Russian film industry refused him rights to international distribution. In America it can only be shown in classes as an educational venture. Join us for a film screening at 4:00 in White Hall 208 and then for a Q&A with the film director via Zoom at 7:00 in White Hall 103. Emory ID is required for entry to either event.
