JWJI Colloquium featuring Laura Helton

University Events Talk Title: Scattered and Fugitive Things: Collectors, Collecting, and the Defiant History of Black Archives ---------- Helton will discuss her recent book, Scattered and Fugitive Things, which tells the stories of Black collectors who created the first enduring set of African American archives: bibliophile Arturo Schomburg, scrapbook maker Alexander Gumby, librarians Virginia Lee and Vivian Harsh, curator Dorothy Porter, and historian L. D. Reddick. At a moment when the very idea of Black history aroused doubt, these collectors defiantly activated Schomburg’s declaration that “the American Negro must remake his past in order to make his future.” That activation entailed both risk and pleasure, and it produced archival abundance—a proliferation of files and repositories. Generations of scholars and readers have benefited from that abundance, but what did these archives mean at the moment of their founding? Mughal eunuchs functioned as both menial servants and trusted servitors with sensitive roles in court, household, and further afield. The talk considers the intimate relationships which could arise in this context, and how their depiction was inflected by multiple normative modes of discussing sex and desire in this period. We Were Here - The Untold History of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe, exhibited in the Central Pavilion directed by Adriano Pedrosa at the 60ᵗʰ International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, sheds light on the overlooked presence of African and Black individuals in Renaissance Europe, highlighting their depiction in masterpieces by some of the era’s most celebrated artists. Care at the End of the World: Dreaming of Infrastructure in Crip-of-Color Writing by Jina B Kim

University Events Care at the End of the World: Dreaming of Infrastructure in Crip-of-Color Writing lecture by Jina B Kim Wednesday, March 19 - 7:00 PM - Williams Hall In Care at the End of the World, Jina B. Kim develops what she calls crip-of-color critique, bringing a disability lens to bear on feminist- and queer-of-color literature in the aftermath of 1996 US welfare reform and the subsequent evisceration of social safety nets. She examines literature by contemporary feminist, queer, and disabled writers of color such as Jesmyn Ward, Octavia Butler, Karen Tei Yamashita, Samuel Delany, and Aurora Levins Morales, who each bring disability and dependency to the forefront of their literary freedom dreaming. Kim shows that in their writing, liberation does not take the shape of the unfettered individual or hinge on achieving independence. Instead, liberation emerges by recuperating dependency, cultivating radical interdependency, and recognizing the numerous support systems upon which survival depends. At the same time, Kim… University Event Topic: Arts. School: Oxford College. Department / Organization: Oxford College. Building/Room: Williams Hall (Oxford). Cost: Free. Remixing Wong Kar-wai: Music, Bricolage, and the Aesthetics of Oblivion

University Events Remixing Wong Kar-wai: Music, Bricolage, and the Aesthetics of Oblivion by Giorgio Biancorosso (Duke University Press, released January 7, 2025 )   From the author of the pathbreaking Situated Listening (2016), Remixing Wong Kar-wai is a poetic, wide-ranging evocation of cult filmmaker Wong Kar-wai's modus operandi. Dubbed once the "best ear in the industry," Wong Kar-wai crafts the soundtracks of his films by jettisoning original scores in favor of commercial recordings. Remixing Wong Kar-wai examines the combinatorial practice at the heart of Wong’s cinema to retheorize musical borrowing, appropriation, and repurposing in Hong Kong cinema and beyond. In this book talk, author Giorgio Biancorosso will discuss the ways in which we can restore listening to the center of film studies — and oblivion to that of culture. Brian Gravely: How far does the syntax-pragmatics interface reach?

University Events How far does the syntax-pragmatics interface reach? A sample from non-canonical wh-elements In this talk, we will explore the use of non-canonical wh-elements and their interpretation at the syntax-pragmatics interface. We will see that while these elements are found in true interrogative contexts, they may also be employed in seemingly rhetorical questions, which we will come to understand as metalinguistic negation in a given discourse setting. Our goal will be to delineate these uses at the syntax-pragmatics interface and ascertain the different functional structure employed in both the true interrogative and metalinguistic scenarios. Life Lessons from Game Theory presented by Dr. Maria Arbatskaya

University Events Life Lessons from Game Theory presented by Dr. Maria Arbatskaya Thursday, March 20 - 7:30 PM - Williams Hall Life is often likened to a game, and insights from game theory can offer valuable guidance. Economics has been called a dismal science primarily for its focus on rational agents acting in their self-interest. Game theory, a part of economics, has its roots in the analysis of zero-sum games (for which my win is your loss and vice versa), which lend themselves well to mathematical study. However, real-life games are rarely zero-sum; they involve cooperation alongside competition. Even conflicts such as wars commonly viewed as zero-sum are not zero-sum due to resource expenditure. Drawing on lessons from game theory, here are some insights that transcend more basic economic teachings: Seek cooperation and recognize that games are usually not zero-sum. Choose the game you want to play; design and modify games to achieve better outcomes. Consider reputational concerns and the repeated nature of interacti… University Event Topic: Arts. JWJI Colloquium featuring Ashleigh Greene Wade

University Events Talk Title: (Re)Creating Spaces of Black Girlhood ---------- How do Black girls carve out spaces for themselves within sociocultural contexts that encourage their silence and erasure? This talk highlights the role of digital practices in Black girls’ space-making techniques as an example of Black girl autopoetics. The term Black girl autopoetics is coined to name Black girls’ praxes of (re)creation and (re)invention of cultural products, spaces, and discourses through their subjective formation and expression. Using ethnographic data from Black girls in Richmond, Virginia alongside Black feminist approaches to geography, Black girls’ geographies are theorized through the inextricability of their digital content, physical environments, and worldviews. Drawing from Black girls’ posts on social media and the stories of their lived experiences, a theory of the digital as both spatial and material is constructed to argue that Black girls’ digital content operates as a map of the interconnected and multilayere… University Event Topic: Lectures & Meetings. Colloquium-Physics Department

University Events Cavity-Dressed Quantum Matter There has been a growing realization that the properties of a material can be modified just by placing it in an optical cavity. The quantum vacuum fields surrounding the material inside the cavity can cause non intuitive modifications of electronic states through ultra strong vacuum–matter coupling, producing a vacuum-dressed material with novel properties. Existing theoretical predictions include cavity-enhanced, cavity-induced, and cavity-mediated enhancement of electron–phonon coupling and superconductivity, electron pairing, anomalous Hall effect, ferroelectric phase transitions, quantum spin liquids, and photon condensation. Achieving the so-called ultra-strong coupling (USC) regime is a prerequisite for observing these effects, which arise when the interaction energy becomes a significant fraction of the bare pho-tonic mode and matter excitation frequencies. Most intriguingly, when a material is ultrastrongly coupled with cavity-enhanced vacuum electromagnetic fie… University Event Topic: College. Lectures & Meetings. Science. School: Emory College. "Put yourself in my shoes": Writing, Home, and Displacement

University Events The news is full of images and stories of people having to flee their homes because of war, hunger, or disease. Many of us have normalized the sight to such an extent that we barely notice it anymore. But what does it feel like to actually have to leave your home and everything – also often everyone – you love and care about behind? What would it feel like for all of us, had we been forced to abandon our place of origin, without the choice of going back? In this writing workshop, "Put yourself in my shoes": Writing, Home, and Displacement, participants will be led by Nicoletta Demetriou, who will draw from her experience as a “refugee child," and as an ethnographer of the refugee condition, to ask participants, through a series of prompts and texts, to reflect on these difficult issues, put themselves in the shoes of a displaced person, and write about it. Nicoletta – an ethnomusicologist, singer, and writing coach from Cyprus – has been teaching similar writing workshops for Greek and Turkish Cypriots… Event Location: Board Room. A Musical Journey to Cyprus: Traditional Songs of Love, Sorrow, and Hope

University Events Throughout history, Cyprus has been variously described as ‘the island of love’ ‘the birthplace of Aphrodite’ ‘the blessed isle’ ‘the land of lemon and olive trees’ among many other things. On this ‘Musical Journey to Cyprus,' Nicoletta Demetriou (voice), Nikitas Tampakis (viola), Roger Mgrdichian (oud), and Panayotis League (laouto and perscussion) explore this varied identity, as expressed through the island’s music and song.
