Scribal Intent: Scribes and Agency in Ancient Egypt
University Events
Even to the trained eye, Egyptian texts can appear highly conventionalized. Sir Alan Gardiner famously complained that the ancient Egyptian scribe “could not give written expression even to his aesthetic emotions without a complete surrender to the conventional phraseology.” Setting aside questions of capability, Gardiner’s remark raises deeper issues about the flexibility of the writing system and our ability to detect variation as evidence of intent. In this lecture, Niv Allon, curator of Egyptian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, explores these questions through three case studies that move from individual signs, to writing practices, and finally to choices of script. Together, these examples suggest a greater degree of agency in scribal decision‑making than is often acknowledged.
This program is free and open to the public, and registration is required.

Emory Cinematheque: Nothing but a Man
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: Nothing but a Man
Directed by Michael Roemer, 1964 | 95 min.
This underseen masterpiece of American independent cinema depicts working class Black experience in the South of the early 1960s with enormous sensitivity and intimacy, a far cry from the slicker Hollywood versions produced in the decade. When self-contained, confident railroad worker Duff Anderson (Ivan Dixon, The Spook Who Sat By the Door, Hogan’s Heroes) comes to a southern town and falls in love with the preacher’s daughter Josie (jazz legend Abbey Lincoln), they struggle to fight all kinds of pressures from the Black and white communities which insist they accept the indignities of segregation and white supremacy. Recently restored, the film looks better than ever, with superb performances from the entire cast.

"In studies of perceptual evidence accumulation, animals like rats are typically thought to integrate sensory inputs (like auditory clicks) until they reach a threshold to decide between two actions, such as turning left or right. Traditionally, this process is modeled as a continuous drift toward a boundary, but alternative theories suggest the timing of the actual 'commitment' might be more discrete or variable across trials.
In the paper I'll be presenting, 'Transitions in dynamical regime and neural mode during perceptual decisions' the authors argue for a fundamental neurally inferred time of commitment (nTc). They show that this nTc acts as a hidden internal milestone that can align neural data across different trials much better than external task events. To understand how they extracted these signatures from noisy spikes, I will also cover FINDR: Flow-field inference from neural data using deep recurrent networks, a method developed by the authors and collaborators. It’s is an unsupervised deep-lear…

DSci Happy Hour with Lauren Klein

When Theory Leads: Towards a Humanities-Forward Model of Computational Research -- The advent of Large Language Models and the cultural data they rely upon has renewed a longstanding conversation about the role of the humanities, and humanities scholars, in computational research. This role has to do not only with the application of LLMs (and related computational methods) to humanities research questions, but also with the application of humanistic methods to computational research. Using a series of projects about social movements from the Emory Digital Humanities Lab as case studies, this talk will show how humanistic methods—and theory in particular—can not only inform the overall design of computational research projects but can also shape the development of computational models themselves. Connecting the contributions of these projects back to the broader landscape of AI/ML, I will argue that humanities theory, and the scholars who produce and engage with it, have very clear roles to play if we are to e…

Sunday FUNday: Mola Magic
University Events
Before Spanish colonists introduced scissors to Central and South America, people wove fabric in one large piece rather than cutting and stitching it. But in the 20th century, the Guna people of Panamá began embracing cloth-cutting as a powerful new art form. Using layered fabrics, reverse applique, and intricate geometric designs, Guna women created dulemolas—vibrant rectangular panels that form the front and back of traditional blouses. These panels often feature stylized animals or symbolic patterns that reflect their cultural resilience.
Come learn about this unique textile tradition and create your own one-of-a-kind dulemola or “mola” using different fabrics!
Sunday FUNday is a free drop-in program for all families and includes admission to the museum. Supplies available on a first come, first served basis.

JWJI Colloquium featuring Sarah RudeWalker
University Events
Talk Title:
Revolutionary Poetics: The Rhetoric of the Black Arts Movement
This talk will introduce audience members to the aesthetic and political mission of the Black Arts Movement (BAM), the aesthetic arm of Black Power in the 1960s and 1970s, by assessing its legacy as a movement that aimed fundamentally to change people’s minds through art. Dr. RudeWalker argues that BAM has had far-reaching influence, particularly in encouraging positive conceptions of Blackness, in the valorization of Black language practices in art and in education, in modeling the populist dissemination of Black vernacular culture through writing and popular music, and in setting the groundwork for considerations of the aesthetic intersections of race with gender and sexuality. These legacies stand as the movement’s primary—and largely unacknowledged—successes, and they provide significant lessons for navigating our current political moment.

Blunt Instrument: Why Economic Theory Can’t Get Any Better, Why We Need It Anyway
University Events
Based on his book of the same name, Dr. Rosenberg will discuss why economic theory—with no track-record of predictive success—is still an indispensable tool for protecting civilized life. Economic theory has never gotten any better at prediction. Its explanations are always after the fact. The mathematical models economists have devoted themselves to for more than a century can’t be improved to enhance their empirical relevance. But from this research program that never paid off, a very useful tool has emerged—game theory. It’s just what civilized society needs to protect itself from the rapaciousness that condemns all markets to fail. In his talk, Dr. Rosenberg will help explain exactly what is needed to make sense of economic theory, and why despite its failures, it’s still indispensable. Economic theory is something we all should understand because the economy affects us all, and it is economic theorists who shape that economy for good or ill.

Daniela Naomi Molnar is a poet and artist who creates with color, water, language, and place. "Memory of a Larger Mind” is an ongoing interdisciplinary project that metabolizes memories of genocide and ecocide, transforming difficult memories from violence to love, desecration to beauty. Globally dispersed and multimodal, the project consists of paintings, sculptures, installations, community events, and three books.

At 2:30pm, Molnar will discuss her forthcoming museum retrospective, “Memory of a Larger Mind,” which will open at the Oregon Jewish Museum in Portland in 2027. Molnar forages stones, flowers, shells, and wildlife bones from specific sites—former concentration camps, previously glaciated spots, abandoned mines—which she then transforms to pigments. Making Maps for Publication
University Events
This workshop will guide researchers in producing maps for publication, with a particular focus on books and academic journals. We will spend the first part of the workshop covering best practices for effective visual communication, including design, dealing with common academic publication limitations (small map size, limited number of figures, restriction to greyscale), and working with art guidelines from the publisher. We will then complete a hands-on exercise in ArcGIS Pro applying many of these lessons to create a final map layout that is publication ready. This workshop is intended for those with some ArcGIS Pro experience and will not cover introductory concepts. However, all experience levels are welcome. We will work through the hands-on portion step-by-step using provided data. For those interested in learning more about GIS software, resources will be provided at the end of the workshop.

CMBC LECTURE | Shaun Gallagher "Compassion: Real and Artificial"
University Events
"Compassion: Real and Artificial"
I’ve proposed a pattern theory of compassion. On this view, compassion is a specific pattern of dynamically related factors that include physiological, cognitive, and affective processes, relational/intersubjective processes, and motivational/action tendencies (Gallagher, Raffone, Aglioti 2024). The idea of compassion as a dynamical pattern is reflected in neuroscientific findings, as well as in compassion practice. This view also allows for a clear distinction between compassion, empathy, and sympathy. Following Dennett’s conception of “real pattern,” compassion can be said to have a pragmatic reality. After summarizing this view I’ll address a question (raised by both computer scientists and Buddhist scholars) about the possibility of creating a compassionate AI system. Can there be such a thing as artificial compassion?

Emory Cinematheque: Ashes and Diamonds
Directed by Andzrej Wajda, 1958 | 103 min.
Andzrej Wajda’s third film on World War II Polish experience is still arguably his greatest. Its tight 24 hour time frame takes place in a small town on the pivotal day when the Nazis have retreated but the Soviet military are rolling in to assume authority--The long-time underground resistance fighter Maciek Chelmicki (the charismatic, dynamic Zbigniew Cybulski, called “the Polish James Dean”) has fought both enemies---and he weighs the moral and emotional dimensions of his latest assignment--to assassinate the new local Communist leader. Jerzy Wójcik’s absolutely stunning deep focus cinematography conveys this utterly compelling story of Poland complex and tragic history in luminous images.

PSP Lunch & Learn: Wolf Man's Unborn Sibling
University Events
Wolf Man’s Unborn Sibling
Patrilineal, familial kinship is integral to traditional psychoanalytic conceptions of subjectivity and relationality, yet the lateral import of sibling relationships —especially sister relationships—is curiously underwritten in Freudian metapsychology. This paper explores the limits of lateral kinship through a close reading of the psychically constitutive force of dead, alive, and unborn siblings in Freud’s infamous Wolf Man case study. Following Nicholas Abraham and Maria Torok’s theory of the encrypted other primal scene of the father-sister pair in Wolf Man’s psyche, Elissa Marder’s emphasis on the womblike character of this crypt structure, and Freud’s discussion of Wolf Man’s dread of a younger sibling, this paper proposes that another presence in Wolf Man’s crypt is that of a phantasmatic, unborn, younger sibling borne of and as the secret of sexual relations between his father and sister.
The crypt-baby that Wolf Man carries in his psyche-belly is rife with contradictory o…

Ethics Across Traditions: Thou Shall Not See - Ethics and Prohibiting Images
University Events
Join us for a heartfelt conversation about controlling—even banning—what we might see.
Much as certain words are prohibited because they are deemed dangerous or degrading, some images are also considered too threatening to produce, distribute, or view. For instance:
Some think the Pernkopf Atlas, a book of anatomy drawn from Nazi victims, should continue to be used it Schools of Medicine, while others consider it verboten.
Religions like Islam and Jainism, and indigenous communities like those at Etowah, consider images powerful, yet some images are deemed forbidden. Why?
What is a museum’s responsibility to the truth? Should museums refrain from putting out objects that may be objectionable or sensitive, or should they in the interest of the truth be more inclined to do so?
Cartographers often deliberately hide what’s in plain sight. Who decides what to obscure?
What is the nature of such illicit images? What fears or concerns justify forbidding them? Though beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, some ima…

CMBC LECTURE | Sashank Varma "The Travelling Salesperson Problem: How Humans 'Efficiently' Solve a Problem which is 'Hard' for Computers."
University Events
"The Travelling Salesperson Problem: How Humans 'Efficiently' Solve a Problem which is 'Hard' for Computers."
The Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) is an important problem in mathematics and computer science. A TSP instance is a set of points. To solve it is to produce a ‘tour’ that starts at one point and returns to it after visiting all other points exactly once, and to solve it optimally is to produce a tour of minimum length. As far as we know, computers cannot solve this problem optimally. It is therefore surprising that, for small instances, people produce tours that are near-optimal (i.e. within 10% of the minimal length), and they do so in time linear in the number of points. To accomplish this remarkable feat, we propose that they adopt a divide-and-conquer strategy: first visually clustering the points, then solving each cluster as a smaller TSP instance, and finally joining together these solutions to solve the overall problem. We provide evidence for this proposal in three behavioral…

Film & Media Blood Drive

Film & Media Blood Drive
Wednesday 2/18 10am-2pm
Math and Science Center Atrium
The Film and Media Department invites you to a Blood Drive run by the American Red Cross in honor of our friend and colleague, Maureen "Mo" Downs. Mo was a welcoming presence in the Office suite, helping students, staff and faculty alike.
Mo was also an active and enthusiastic blood donor. She gave blood regularly and often convinced others to do the same. Her kindness helped many patients and donor recipients over the years. When Mo was undergoing her cancer treatment, she started regularly receiving infusions which brought her comfort and helped ease the toll of her treatment.
In honor of her memory and advocacy, the Film and Media Department is hosting a memorial blood drive. We encourage anyone who can give blood to attend.
Walkins are welcome but you can sign up to donate by visiting www.redcrossblood.org and entering the sponsor code EmoryFilm.

Emory Cinematheque: The Lives of Others
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: The Lives of Others
Directed by Florian Hencken von Donnersmarck, 2006 | 137 min.
Screening introduced by Dr. Caroline Schaumann, Professor of German Studies.
Florian Hencken von Donnersmarck burst onto the international scene with this Oscar-winning exploration of oppressed life and artistic censorship during the 1980s in repressive, authoritarian East Germany. When a die-hard STASI (secret police) agent begins surveilling a successful, government-approved playwright and his partner, a leading actress, he begins to question his work and his own beliefs. With an exquisitely complex script and superb performances from his cast, von Donnersmarck crafted one of the greatest films of the 21st century, a truly moving example of coming to terms with the past and the unquenchable desire for freedom.

One Instrument, Many Treatments: Instrumental Variables Identification of Multiple Causal Effects
University Events
Many instrumental variables applications specify a single Bernoulli treatment. But instruments may change outcomes through multiple pathways or by varying treatment intensity. Lottery instruments that boost charter school enrollment, for instance, may affect outcomes by lengthening time enrolled in a charter school and by moving students between charter schools of different types. We analyze the identification problem such scenarios present in a framework that generalizes the always-taker/never-taker/complier partition of treatment response types to cover a wide range of multinomial and ordered treatments with heterogenous potential outcomes. This framework yields novel estimators in which a single randomly assigned instrument identifies (i) causal effects averaged over complier types and (ii) a causal conditional expectation function that captures effects for each element in a set of response types. Three empirical applications demonstrate the utility of these results. The first extends an earlier analysis o…

Sponsored by Candler's World Christianity program, this event will feature Mitri Raheb, founder and president of Dar al-Kalima University, Bethlehem. Raheb's presentation will cover World Christianity from Middle Eastern perspectives and experiences, building on decolonial theory and his extensive work as Palestinian liberation theologian identifying several critical issues that are underrepresented in World Christianity scholarship today. Emory Cinematheque: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Directed by John Ford, 1962 | 123 min.
The western genre mythologized America’s frontier expansion, and John Ford’s last great film in this genre manages to sum up both his own work and the genre itself. Through the multiple confrontations among the murderous outlaw Liberty Valence (Lee Marvin), the quintessential western loner hero Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) and naïve eastern lawyer Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart), this ultimately elegiac film explores and dismantles the mythology of the settling of the west while dramatizing the process of establishing a western state—and at what cost. Suspenseful, funny and ultimately melancholy, Liberty Valence‘s dramatization of competing values of individualism and community and the place of gun violence in American history remain strikingly relevant today. The three leads give iconic performances.

Drawing on theoretical frameworks by Janet Murray (immersion and the fourth wall), Ronald Rowe (interactive systems), and Julie Thompson Klein (interdisciplinarity), he examines how these concepts operate in practice through three recent projects: Freedom Collective, an immersive and smartphone-interactive music theatre work; manτεία a multisensory, AI-driven guided exhibition where artworks interact with one another; and On the Other Earth, a large-scale stereoscopic choreographic installation that redefines the boundaries between dance, cinema, sound, and architecture. Student Studio: Scented History
University Events
Across ancient cultures, scents were closely connected to daily life, ritual, and well-being. The ancient Greeks ground aromatic plants and resins and suspended them in olive oil, while ancient Egyptians combined materials such as lily, frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon bark, and thyme with animal fats to create perfumes believed to soothe the body, focus the mind, and restore balance. In this Student Studio, take a pause from your day as you explore the history of scent and create your own signature fragrance using a variety of scented oils—an opportunity to slow down, engage your senses, and support personal well-being through creative practice.

McCandless Lecture: Susan Gelman, Ph.D. "Essentialist beliefs: The good, the bad, and the ugly"
University Events
As part of the McCandless Lecture Series, Susan Gelman, Ph.D. Heinz Werner Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Linguistics at the University of Michigan will present "Essentialist beliefs: The good, the bad, and the ugly".
Psychological essentialism is the intuition that certain categories reflect a hidden, non obvious reality, and that members of a category share an inherent, immutable 'essence'. This way of thinking is a double-edged sword: it provides a foundation for appreciating aspects of the natural world that cannot be easily seen ("the good"); but at the same time, it leads to underappreciating variation within categories, overlooking structural forces, and treating category boundaries as strict and impassable ("the bad"). Furthermore, when applied to social categories, such as race, gender, and ethnicity, the consequences include stereotyping, prejudice, and intergroup bias ("the ugly"). Research on essentialism is a stark reminder that the cognitive mechanisms that make humans so…

Emory Cinematheque: Notorious
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: Notorious
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, 1946 | 102 min
Hitchcock’s best black and white Hollywood film, the recently restored Notorious shows the master of suspense in complete command of cinematic storytelling and simultaneously marked his new level of commitment to portraying romance. In this espionage thriller, Hitchcock vividly portrays the intense romantic triangle and swirl of sexual jealousy involving proto-CIA agent Devlin (Cary Grant), the amateur spy Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman) and the man she is assigned to seduce in Brazil, the Nazi Alex Sebastian (Claude Rains). The three leads are at the top of their game, thanks in part to the brilliant, often cynical and morally complex script by Ben Hecht.

Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man
University Events
Emory Cinematheque: The Third Man
Directed by Carol Reed , 1949 | 104 min.
Arguably no film better captured the sense of post-World War II disillusionment than Carol Reed’s realization of an original Graham Greene script about despicable crime and corruption in Vienna. Declared by at least one critic as “probably the greatest British thriller of the postwar era,” the film, featuring exteriors shot on location in Vienna, is largely a detective noir featuring an out of his depth American pulp fiction writer Holly Martens (Joseph Cotton), his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) and the woman they both love (Alida Valli). Reed elicited memorable performances from his cast (also including Trevor Howard). Cinematographer Robert Krasker furthered the film's unsettling atmosphere with his extensive use of canted angles. And Anton Karas’s zither “Third Man Theme” achieved top-charting status for nearly three months. You will have a hard time forgetting it or more to the point, the film.

Filmed on location in Harlem, USA and in Claude Monet’s historic gardens in Giverny, France, The Giverny Document is a multi-textured cinematic poem that meditates on the safety and bodily autonomy of Black women. Filmmaker Ja’Tovia Gary unleashes an arsenal of techniques and materials including direct animation on archival 16mm film, woman on the street interviews, and montage editing techniques to explore the creative virtuosity of Black femme performance figures while interrogating the histories of those bodies as spaces of forced labor and commodified production.

JWJI Colloquium featuring Adia Harvey Wingfield
University Events
Talk Title:
Gray Areas: How the Way We Work Maintains Racism
Once mainstream, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become increasingly controversial. Yet whether companies proclaim their support for diversity or run from the term, racial inequality persists in many workplaces. Even when support for DEI was at its peak, Black workers were slower to be hired, earned less than their white colleagues, stalled out at midlevel positions, and rarely advanced to the top ranks of organizations. Why do these disparities persist?
In this talk, Adia Harvey Wingfield answers this question by documenting how sociological dynamics of work continue to thwart Black employees’ progress. Following narratives of seven Black workers in fields ranging from academia to medicine to entertainment, she discusses the unexpected ways that recruitment, promotion, culture, and other basic aspects of work are themselves major drivers of racial inequality.

CMBC LECTURE | Ken Paller "Sleep-based Memory Reactivation and Opportunities for Better Benefits from Sleep"
University Events
"Sleep-based Memory Reactivation and Opportunities for Better Benefits from Sleep"
Sleep is critical not only for its restorative benefits but also for its contributions to memory function. Memory reactivation occurs covertly during sleep. Corresponding changes in the brain move memory consolidation forward, enhancing the likelihood of later remembering and stoking creativity. Our habits of overnight memory reactivation—and the specific memories we reactivate each night—influence our daytime psychological well-being. What transpires in our brains after we fall asleep may seem beyond volitional control. To the contrary, it can be strategically modified to seek various benefits. We have developed methods to modify sleep-based memory reactivation using sensory stimulation, and studies with these methods have uncovered various facets of this covert processing, including dreaming. We’ve also sought insights through studies of the well-documented methods of contemplative sleep practices from Tibetan-Buddhist…

Emory Cinematheque: High and Low
Directed by Akira Kurosawa, 1963 | 143 min.
Akira Kurosawa is best known for his innovative samurai films, but he took special pride in his contemporary dramas like Ikiru / Living (1952) and this masterful kidnapping detective thriller, recently reconfigured by Spike Lee as Higher 2 Lowest (2025). Immediately after shoe company executive Kingo Gondo (frequent collaborator Toshiro Mifune) mortgages everything to buy a controlling interest in his company, he faces a moral dilemma as to whether to pay an outrageous ransom for the kidnapping of his chauffeur’s son. Kurosawa, at this point fearless in his storytelling prowess, uses every cinematic technique at his disposal to produce a gripping, unpredictable, exhilarating film that is both intimate and epic in its scope.

Art History Endowed Lecture: Rocks as Art
University Events
In China, for well over a millennium, selected natural rocks known as Scholar's Rocks have been admired for their aesthetic and spiritual qualities. Like animate beings, these stones possess vital energy and breath. Collected by emperors and scholar-officials, large rocks placed in gardens served as focal points to engender thoughts about perfecting oneself and gaining immortality, and for contemplation about nature and travel through mountains. In miniature form, rocks on a scholar's desk brought the cosmos within hand's reach.
Join Jan Stuart, the Melvin R. Seiden Curator of Chinese Art at the National Museum of Asian Art, for a lecture that will explore the cultural meanings of rocks and the artistic criteria by which they were judged, as well as how they were displayed through contemporary times.
This program is hosted by Emory Art History, and is free and open to the public.
