Winter Allen

Albany Chapter This is one of the most remote peaks of the 46, and a very long day.  We will meet at the East River trailhead and go in via the East River trail until we hit the Allen herd path.  Hopefully the Opalescent River will be frozen over enough to cross.  In the event we cannot cross the brook, we will do an alternative hike in the area.  With the exception of the central 2 miles, this hike is relatively easy with out any significant elevations for the first/last 8 miles.  The mile ascent/descent up the Allen Brook/slide to the peak is significantly steep, but will provide amazing views and butt slides coming down.  Microspikes and snowshoes will be required for this hike.  In the end, it will be 18 miles and 3600 feet of elevation. Winter Saddleback

Albany Chapter Saddleback is located in the middle of the Great range and offers some spectacular views of the park.  We will come in from the Gardens and go up via Ore Bed, avoiding the cliffs.  The first and last 5 miles are relatively flat and easy.  The climb up the Ore Bed slide and the last climb up Saddleback are steep.  Microspikes and snowshoes will be required for this hike.  In the end, it will be 12.5 miles and 3200 feet of elevation.  Bad weather date will be the 15th. Bozen Kill Preserve Hike/Snowshoe

Albany Chapter Hiking or snowshoeing in the Bozen Kill Preserve in Altamont.  This land is managed by the Mohawk-Hudson Land Conservancy and the land includes a stream, several miles of wooded trails, escarpment features and pretty views.  Our exact route will be decided once the weather forecast and trail conditions are known.  My expectation is we will start at 10 am from the Lower Parking lot and go 4-6 miles and 400-600' of elevation gain, distance depending on conditions. Email me to register and I will put you on my email list to update and with specific directions as we get closer to the hike date.  I am hoping for snow, but will be out there in most conditions other than pouring rain or blinding snow! SUNDAY HIKE Letchworth SP Hike (and Pancakes!)

Genesee Valley Chapter Note the meeting time! This will be our 25th annual pancake hike. We will drive to the parade grounds entrance on the east side of the river at Letchworth State Park and hike south along the newly opened Finger Lakes Trail to the old RR crossing, and back. This will be about a 5-mile Class C+ hike, mostly flat, but snowshoes or spikes will probably be required as the trail may be very uneven due to frozen boot prints.  After the hike we will go to Cartwrights' Maple Tree Inn.  We'll meet at 8:30 a.m. at Frontier Commons near the intersection of 390 and Jefferson Road and leave for Letchworth via carpool at 8:45. We won't be back until mid to late afternoon, so if you are pressed for time, this isn't a good match.  Bring a light snack as we may not get to the restaurant until around 1:00 or 1:30, and there may be a wait (very possibly outside). Also, bring cash for the meal (Maple Tree doesn't take credit cards) and the carpool drivers.  The carpool cost will be $24/car divided by the number of riders. (e.g.… Region: Genesee Valley Region.
