Walking Wednesday
Onondaga Chapter
Every Wednesday some of our members take a hike on one of the many trails in CNY. The Wednesday hikes welcome new participants. The participants decide where to go, based on weather and individual schedules. The first Wednesday of each month during spring, summer and fall is usually devoted to trail maintenance. The trails are south of Syracuse, below Rt 80 in general, the Onondaga trail, FLT, and NCT trails give us a variety to choose from. Dress for the weather (in layers). Water and food (light lunch/snack), and any necessities such as raingear are best carried in a small daypack. Walking/hiking poles might be good for balance on rocks and tree roots we encounter, traction spikes and/or snowshoes taken as needed seasonally. Our group is very flexible and we love to be out in the woods for a nice social hike. Contact the leader if weather is questionable or any other questions arise. Hope to see you on a Wednesday hike. Must contact leader to confirm meeting time and location.

Allow a little extra time so that we can depart at 6 pm, launching from the aluminum floating dock.

Poke-O-Moonshine Firetower Sunset Hike
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
Join us on a sunset hike on the Ranger Trail up Poke-O-Moonshine to the fire tower in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Firetower Challenge. For those new to the challenge, it involves climbing and documenting, by date, ascents of at least 23 NYS fire tower summits: 18 of 27 Adirondack Park summits and all 5 Catskill Park summits. Poke-O is popular for its expansive views of Lake Champlain, the High Peaks and the Green Mountains in VT. It's name is thought to be a combination of two Algonquin words- "pohqui" and "moosie" which translated means "broken and smooth". 1,000 ft gneiss cliffs on the east side offer rock climbers over 180 routes. The summit is mostly open to the east and west but climbing the tower offers an amazing 360 degree view. We will meet at the trailhead at 5:00 p.m. fuel up with a mini dinner, and begin our steep and challenging but short hike up to Poke-O hoping to catch the sun setting. Then we will head down with headlamps carefully descending back to our vehicles for the ride home.…

This is a scenic pond-and-lake paddle from Lake Kushaqua, in the remote northern hamlet of Onchiota, to Little Clear Pond, in the St. Regis Wilderness. The portages are mostly short & fairly flat. There are six portages. One is only 75 feet. Another is only 100 ft. Another is only 150 feet. Another is 0.75 mile and can be done with a car. Another is 0.85 miles. Another is 1 mile. We'll float through lakes and ponds, with some Summer camps, and into the St. Regis Wilderness, which has no development on its shorelines. The St. Regis was acquired by the state in 1898. It has always been undeveloped and motor-free. It consists of 18,000 acres, 58 lakes & ponds, and 24 miles of hiking, skiing, and portaging trails.

Boreas Ponds Paddle and Campout
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
Join us around 9 a.m. at the trailhead for a canoe or kayak portage, paddle and campout at Boreas Ponds in North Hudson. For those who have not been here, there is a very smooth and well graded 1.4 mile portage on a dirt road to the brand new accessible put-in that will require wheels. Once there we will set up camp at the Lean-To or in the field which will require a short .2 hike uphill. We can explore the ponds at our leisure for the afternoon. To paddle and explore the system of ponds is about 5 miles total with insanely excellent views of the High Peaks. The shore of the ponds is impenetrable. There is literally NOWHERE to take out other than the official put in which does make this paddle more challenging! Also worth noting is that the lean-to is NOT very close to the put-in which requires faith in mankind not to steal your boat while you are not watching over it. So you may feel more comfortable wheeling your boat up the trail to the Lean-to. Those who don't want to camp can sign out of the trip and hea…

Paddle - Skaneateles Lake
Genesee Valley Chapter
Join us for a paddle at the south end of Skaneateles Lake. We'll launch at Andrew R. Fuller Park in the Glen Haven area and paddle up the east shoreline of the lake. The paddle length is about 6 miles round trip. There are some cottages along this route, but quite a bit of the paddle is below steep cliffs. We first stop at an area containing ancient fossil staghorn coral deposits dating from the Devonian Period (400 - 350 million years ago). We then continue to Staghorn Point, a new area preserved by the Finger Lakes Land Trust. Her we take a break, have lunch and possible swim....weather permitting. Toilet facilities are in the woods. We then re-trace our path back to the launch. The trip is quite scenic, and the water in this lake is incredibly clear....the clearest of the finger lakes.
,
We will gather at 9:00 am in the parking lot of Bass Pro Shops on the north side of Route 20, just as we are entering Auburn, NY from the west. We will then proceed as a group to the launch point. Total on way…

Whiteface from Lake Placid
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
The path less travelled to Whiteface, this is a favorite summer hike. After walking past quiet Connery Pond, we’ll get to Whiteface Landing on Lake Placid in time for a snack on the floating dock. Will the dock still be tilted, or will they have finally fixed it? The real ascent begins once we reach the Whiteface Lean-to. The views will appear as we approach the summit before our final climb up the open, rocky south face of the mountain to find all the people who drove up crowding the top. Our lunch spot will be a quieter place below the summit. The best part is a swim off the dock on the way back, so bring your swim suit and hope for warm but not too hot weather. Round trip distance is 12.4 miles with 3,200 feet of elevation change. Meet at the park and ride at the north end of Media Drive near Northway Exit 18. Sign up is only by email to the leader.

Driftin' to Rifton - a Wallkill River Paddle with Shawangunk Mtns. Vews
Mid-Hudson Chapter
The Wallkill River lazily passes by New Paltz on its way northward to the Hudson River. Between New Paltz & Rifton, the banks of the river are mainly farmland, with at least one stone house that dates back to the early 1700s. This will be a serene, relaxing paddle.
We'll unload at Sojourner Truth Park, in New Paltz, then do an approx. 6.5-mile (each way) car shuttle & return to the park. The paddle will be approx. 11 miles, on flatwater, at a leisurely pace.
Canoe & kayak rentals are available at Sojourner Truth Park. But the number of rentals allowed will be determined by the number of drivers with vehicles that can carry more than one boat. To find out more about renting, Google "canoe kayak rentals on the Wallkill River, New Paltz, NY". When you apply for this outing, tell the leader if you're planning to rent a boat. If you already have a boat, tell the leader how many boats (other than your own) you can carry on the shuttle & whether they're canoes, kayaks or both.
PFDs must be worn while on the water -…
