Genesee Valley Chapter
Tuesday Hikes are being cross-posted to the MeetUp Group "ADK Genesee Valley Chapter."
Hybrid hike split between a 40-minute hike around the reservoir and on flat, well-maintained trails in Washington Grove looping back to the cars, then a 70-minute moderate hike at a faster pace through Washington Grove, circling Cobbs Hill with 2 descents/climbs and a brief stop at the Portage Trail plaque for the rest of the 2-hour hike. Meet 9:45am at Cobbs Hill Reservoir, parking along Reservoir Rd (43.13958, -77.56959) next to Washington Grove before the Monroe County Radio Center Bldg for a 10:00am hike start. Lake Minnewaska Loop & Awosting Falls
Albany Chapter
This hike is about 4.8 miles with an elevation gain of about 543 feet. This is a fairly easy hike with some hills. We will start at Minnewaska State Park‘s visitors‘ center. We will do the loop around Lake Minnewaska, a scenic lake with high cliffs. Then we will hike down to Awosting Falls, a beautiful waterfall, and time permitting also do a short hike around Peterskill red loop. Depending on trail conditions, snowshoes or microspikes may be needed. I will check on that in advance. Also bring a lunch, fluids, and dress appropriately with good hiking boots. Contact me at my e-mail address if interested. - Brad.

Spectacle Pond Snowshoe/microspikes, Pharaoh Wilderness
Cold River Chapter
The trail follows a gentle incline on the way to the pond along Spectacle Brook which we will cross a few times. There is a campsite along the edge of the water, and from the pond there is a great view looking across the water towards the surrounding mountains. Since this is a short hike, we will have the option to also do Gull Pond trail one mile north along Adirondack Road, if the group is interested. This trail is only .5 miles into pond but has dramatic cliffs on the opposite side to the pond.
Meeting Place/Time: 9:30am at trailhead. Take Alder Meadow Road, north of the town of Schroon, and go 3.1 miles. Continue following the road to the right and go for another 2.7 miles to trailhead on left. You will pass Gull Pond trailhead on your left but keep going for another mile south. Trailhead is at a big bend in the road. From Pottersville, Route 9, take Glendale Road past the launch and make a left turn on to Adirondack Road. At the settlement of Adirondack, turn on to Red Wing Road a.

Women’s Hike-Durand Eastman
Genesee Valley Chapter
We will cross Lakeshore Boulevard in Irondequoit, the Seaway Trail and hike the Durand Lake Trail (Blue Trail) and cross to the Eastman Lake trail (yellow trail) through the woods. If we are lucky, the orange witch hazel will be in bloom. Its fragrance is wonderful; such a treat on a January day- a highlight of the hike. We will finish the hike along Eastman lake and then hike a short distance along Lake Ontario if time allows. Those interested could gather for lunch after the hike at the Parkside Diner 4353 Culver Rd. (near Sweet Fern Rd.) Please arrive at 9:45 for a 10:00 am start, bring poles, water and a snack. Dress in layers. Microspikes may be helpful if there is frozen ground and ice.
Please use the GPS coordinates and not the map on this page. The map shows Lake Erie in Ohio but, of course, we are hiking across Lakeshore Blvd on Lake Ontario. The coordinates will be correct when put into googlemaps.

Valentino Family Community Forest
Albany Chapter
Winter hike/snowshoe to the Valentino Family Community Forest (VFCF) in Cropseyville, NY. The Forest is one of the many properties managed by the Hudson Taconic Lands (formerly RPA), a land trust in Rensselaer County. The property is a little over 400 acres and has 5.5 miles of marked trails. How far we go depends on the winter weather; but we should be able to complete at least the 3.3 mile loop, elevation gain less than 600 ft. If we are lucky enough to have significant snow, we will snowshoe. If snow is minimal, we will hike with microspikes only. From the parking lot, the first part is mostly flat or gentle hills as the trail goes around a beaver pond and a wetland, with one slightly tricky stream crossing (hiking poles will help with this). We then have a slight incline starting on the far side of the pond, followed by a more significant uphill of about 0.5 miles to “Sophie’s Knoll” and then a gentler downhill back to the parking area.
To register, send me an email. I'll provide more information…

Crown Point State Historic Site Snowshoe
Cold River Chapter
This is a snowshoe hike going through the fields and forests surrounding the ruins of Fort St. Frederic and the British Fort at Crown Point. It is anticipated we will travel 4 miles. It is relatively level with some modest hills. I work at the site and will be able to explain what we are seeing as we snowshoe across the site. The almost 400 acres was a military post over 49 years used by three countries. The ruins of the two forts are preserved. In the event that there isn’t enough snow we will simply walk the site. I have two extra pair of snowshoes I can loan out (first come, first served), if needed.

New Three Great Cruises: Antarctica, the Baltic and the Pacific Northwest.Presentation by chapter member John Schneider: In 2023, I went on three cruises. Each one was totally different from the others. My first one was my third trip to my favorite place in the natural world - Antarctica's South Georgia Island. The island has some of the world's largest king penguin colonies. Three landings stand out: estimates of 23,000, 75,000 and 125,000 penguins in one location. We went ashore at least twice each day and viewed penguins, fur seals and elephant seals, as well as many seabirds. This trip was not complete until we drank a toast at the grave of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. My second cruise was on the Baltic Sea where we visited areas of Denmark, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden. We explored parts of Europe I had not visited before. Unfortunately, illness required us to cut this trip short, but fortunately, this occurred toward the end of the cruise. We ended our cruise year with a rive…
