Tuesday Hike (Hybrid)-Mendon Ponds-Devil's Bathtub, West Esker & Hopkins Point
Genesee Valley Chapter
Two-hour hybrid hike in Mendon Ponds split between a 40-minute hike at a slower pace along the shoreline of Deep and 100 Acre Pond toward Hopkins Point, then a second hike at a faster pace with hills along Devil's Bathtub and on the West Esker Trail. Meet at 9:45am in the parking lot on Pond Road for Devil's Bathtub/Algonkian-Shelter for a 10:00am hike start. From the Pond Road entrance at Clover St (65) near the Nature Center & Wild Wings, drive a half-mile east into the park to the Devil's Bathtub/Algonkian-Shelter parking lot on Pond Rd, next to Algonkian Shelter and Deep Pond. Don't drive up the short drive to the Devil's Bathtub Shelter. This parking area is west of the intersection of Pond and Douglas Roads where some of our other hikes start from. Please dress for the weather, wear boots or trail shoes with good traction, bring some water to drink and some tick/mosquito repellent. Hiking poles would be helpful on the steeper sections. Day 2 will be the loop hike to Haystack, Marcy, Lake Tear of the Clouds and Skylight, and involves some very steep trails, open rock and ledges, and several thousand feet of climbing and descent. And no, we will not be climbing Gray. The trip requires appropriate tent, overnight equipment, meals and supplies, including a bear-resistant canister. Traditional rocks for Skylight's summit encouraged, but not required. Panther and alien encounters unlikely, and not to be believed in any event. A good book helps at night. Bad weather cancels. Sunday Hike - Bristol Hills Trail Map B1
Genesee Valley Chapter
Join us for a 6 mile hike from Ontario County Park south to enjoy fall hiking, hoping to see some colors! This will be a point-to-point if I can find someone else to help shuttle cars. Bring cash to help pay $15 per car (if we have 2 cars and 6 people that will be $5 each person). Sorry, no dogs allowed.
Additional Information: The Sunday Hikes are offered as a benefit to current and potential new members of ADK. All our hikes have a steady pace, so are not "nature strolls" but they are also not "endurance tests" although we do at times hike at a brisk pace. Bring plenty to drink and a snack or lunch. Hiking poles will be useful on the slopes. Equally important is the proper footwear, gear and clothing for changing conditions. Our hikes are planned to last 2.5-3 hours, but many times unexpected delays can occur, so if you are pressed for time, this hike may not be a good fit.
We're always looking for new places to go and additional leaders. Minors are welcome when accompanied by a parent or legal…

Tour of the Raptor Trust and hike through New Jersey’s Great Swamp
Mid-Hudson Chapter
The Raptor Trust is one of the premier wild bird rehabilitation centers in the United States. Dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of raptors and all wild birds.

*We will learn about 40 different raptors that are “residents” birds that were unable to be released that now serve as ambassadors for educational purposes. https://www.theraptortrust.org/
We will have a guided tour of the facility by a staff member and then hike 4-5 or so miles of trails, mostly on boardwalks through the Great Swamp co-led by members Sharon Klein and Lori Herpen, who is a staff member of Raptor Trust. Mt. Adams
Albany Chapter
This is a 4.8 miles long and 1800 foot elevation gain/loss hike up to the Mt. Adams Fire Tower. The first mile of First part of trail is relatively flat, but the last mile gets to be very steep. With any luck we will be at or just past peak foliage and have some beautiful views of the park. Due to how busy the park will be on the holiday weekend, I highly recommend we carpool to make parking easier.
While this peak is not a high peak, it is in the high peaks wilderness, and the trails are very similar to what you will experience in the rest of the high peaks, so this makes a good introduction to hiking in the high peaks if you haven't done so before.

Weekday High Peaks Hike
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
July's weekday high peaks hike went well, with no problems getting into the AMR lot, so here is the second one. I've listed the hike for Tuesday, but I will change the day to Wednesday or even Thursday if the weather looks better, with a decision to be made on Sunday or Monday before. Weekdays give us the chance to hike from The Garden or the Ausable Mountain Reserve parking lot. Where we go will depend on mountain conditions, which can be very variable in October, and I'm open to suggestions for where to hike. Email me if you might want to come along. Meet at the park and ride at the north end of Media Drive near Northway Exit 18 or at the trailhead. Time TBD. Meeting time will be early, but will depend on the day's hike.

Chapter Meeting
Albany Chapter
Moose have long been present in the State of New York. Historical records suggest that moose were present north of the Mohawk River as far back as the Pleistocene. Due to unfettered forest harvest and market hunting, moose were deemed extirpated from the landscape by as early as 1861. During this time, moose were also extirpated from neighboring Vermont, but populations persisted elsewhere in northeastern North America. It wasn’t until the mid-1980’s that moose began to take up residence in New York once again, with an estimated 6-11 permanent residence by 1986. Over the next four decades, moose have slowly repopulated the Adirondacks. Current population metrics suggest a small but stable population of approximately 700 moose currently reside within the Adirondack Blue Line.
