Mid-Week Paddle

Albany Chapter I will be leading a weekly mid-week paddle this season. It will be either on Wednesday or Thursday, depending on which day has the better weather. Last season we averaged 11-1/2 miles per trip, with about 5 hours on the water. We paddle at a fairly relaxed pace, but these are “all day trips” so bring a lunch and plenty of water. We could be paddling anywhere on the Mohawk, Hudson, or one of the many streams that are in the region or the southern Adirondacks. I will decide on a location and day the weekend before each trip. I will also attempt to have the destination listed on the Chapter Web Page as soon as possible. Contact me by e-mail for more information and to be put on the Paddler’s E-mail list for future trips. As with all Chapter Paddling Trips; you must wear your properly fastened PFD, bring a whistle and a white light. If I’m not able to lead a particular trip, a qualified substitute leader will be assigned. The paddle will go on. Region: Capital District. Type: Chapter Outings. Activity: Paddling. Black Hole Hike

July 22: Black Hole Hike Leader: Brendan Hanley Level: Easy Duration: 2 1/2 hours Limit: 10 Description: The focus of this outing is lunch and a swim at the Black Hole, a delightful (and popular) swimming hole on Mill Creek off the north side of Harrington Road in the Town of Johnsburg. Although one can drive directly to the Black Hole, that approach would seem very un-ADKish. Instead, we’ll spot cars at the Black Hole and take advantage of a substantial chunk of town-owned land north of Mill Creek to improvise a modest 2.25- mile (appx) hike/bushwack to the swimming hole. We’ll start in Riparius at the Route 8 Hudson River Bridge and proceed along the lightly-traveled Riverside Station Road until town land is reached. At that point the group will bushwhack to the Hudson and proceed downriver (possibly along RR tracks for better views) to a point just above where Mill Creek empties into the Hudson. We’ll then head up Mill Creek to the Black Hole. All hikers, whether they plan to swim or not, will have to… Region: Adirondacks. Type: Chapter Outings. Activity: Hiking.
