Whiteface from Lake Placid

Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter The path less travelled to Whiteface, this is a favorite summer hike. After walking past quiet Connery Pond, we'll get to Whiteface Landing on Lake Placid in time for a snack on the floating dock. Will the dock still be tilted, or will they have finally fixed it? The real ascent begins once we reach the Whiteface Lean-to. The views will appear as we approach the summit before our final climb up the open, rocky south face of the mountain to find all the people who drove up crowding the top. Our lunch spot will be a quieter place below the summit. The best part is a swim off the dock on the way back, so bring your swimsuit and hope for warm but not too hot weather. Round trip distance is 12.4 miles with 3,232 feet of elevation change. Meet at the park and ride at the north end of Media Drive near Northway Exit 18. Sign up is only by email to the leader. Hike Black Mountain and Lake George Trail

Albany Chapter Black Mountain and Lake George Trail. 7-7.5 miles and elevation gain of 1400 feet.  We hike in from the trailhead on Pike Brook Road.  At the junction, we take the loop trail up and over the mountain and by the Black Mountain Ponds and Lapland Pond, eventually returning on the original trail ( a lollipop route).   Most of the trail is a gentle gradient, but there are steep parts going up the top part of the mountain and coming down the other side. There may be wet areas near the ponds. There are views from the top and a couple overlooks of the ponds when coming down. This mountain is part of the Lake George 12ster. To register, email the leader.  I expect we will meet at the Exit 9 Park and Ride to carpool (or at trailhead) at about 7:45; but we will leave earlier if forecast is for high temperatures.  Hike, with breaks, will be 4-5 hours.  We will hike at a moderate pace, but will slow down if it is really hot! Paddle-Irondequoit Bay

We will hopefully see some nice birds…maybe an eagle as I’ve heard there have been many sightings there. Kaaterskill High Peak (A)

Long Island Chapter Kaaterskill High Peak was once thought to be the highest peak in the Catskills because of the prominence of some of the views from the Hudson Valley and also because local hotel owners promoted the peak in their backyard as the biggest and the best. It’s actually the 23rd highest of the 35 Catskill high peaks.  However, Kaaterskill High Peak (aka “High Peak”) ranks fourth in prominence among Catskill peaks and has steep sides that can be difficult. This 6 mile hike with just under 2000 feet of elevation gain is part on trail and part bushwhack to the reach the summit canister.  The bushwhack part gets steep and rough.  Registration by August 4. Bear Slides Hike & Bike

Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter A few of us are scheduling activities where if you complete 8 of them you can complete the Gateway 8 Challenge. If you come along and bicycle, you can complete 2 of the challenges today. We will meet at the Luzerne Market and bicycle to the bear slides trailhead, and then hike the last mile to the actual bear slides. I've been there several times and they are very unique. The official bike route is 16.3 miles and has a few hills. If you don't care about the challenge, you can just bike back along the river and skip the hills. The hike part is very easy and is about 2 miles with minimal elevation gain. If you don't want to do the bike part, you are welcome to join us just for the hike. It will probably take us about an hour to bicycle there, so figure 11:00 AM. The last part of the road to the trailhead is dirt. I'll be riding my mountain bike, but you probably are okay with any bike as long as the tires aren't too skinny. Region: Adirondacks. Type: Chapter Outings. Activity: Hiking. We will be going with the current and paddling about 2 hours for a distance of 5.4 miles.  Depending on the water level, there may be shallows where you would have to get out and walk your boat and/or sections with Class 1 moving water.  Bring a lunch as we will stop along the way, beach our boats and eat our sandwiches.  , We will meet at the John Wesley Powell Riverside Park & Boat Launch on Swett St in Mount Morris.  Arrive early enough to unload your boat and be ready to leave at 9:30 to shuttle cars to the take-out at Indian Fort Nature Preserve on Jones Bridge Rd, Geneseo. We will aim to be back at the park and on the river by 10:30. There is a restroom at the park.  , The launch site has a concrete ramp and steps but doesn't make for an easy put in so we will help each other get in our boats. Cold River Chapter This is a chance to experience the truly Adirondack fun pastime of “Pond Hopping”. This venture will give us a chance to explore 4 small (almost backcountry) ponds. The tradeoff is that there are carries between them, but they are very short. It is a good trip to put your Hornbeck through its paces. There are also several bays and islands to explore along the way. Total paddling distance up to 6 miles. There are 4 sort carries totaling 0.5 miles. Region: Adirondacks. Type: Chapter Outings. Long Pond Hike

Cold River Chapter I’m returning this summer to Long Pond, described in the ADK Guidebook as presenting “…an atmosphere somewhat reminiscent of Lake George on a much smaller scale.” The “pond” provides a wonderful backcountry swimming experience with clean, deep water right off portions of the rocky shoreline. No weedy muck to deal with. Long pond is accessed via the Cisco Creek Trailhead off Elm Lake Road near the Village of Speculator. The southern end of the pond is reached about 3 miles from the trailhead but we’ll proceed along the trail up the western shoreline to an open spot for a leisurely lunch and (for those interested) a swim. Overall, I estimate a 6.7 mile roundtrip with only about 375 feet of elevation gain. Region: Adirondacks. Type: Chapter Outings. Activity: Hiking. Posted by: Cold River Chapter. Trip rating: C+.
