Quick Lake Backpack, Willowemoc Wild Forest, Western Catskills
Mid-Hudson Chapter
The 14,800 acre Willowemoc Wild Forest is a place you can enjoy solitude. It offers an extensive trail network and several ponds. Even though there are no major elevation changes, you still can get a grand view. For this, we'll do a pack-less side hike up Beech Mtn. (~2 miles RT; ~150 ft. ascent). How can you get a Catskill grand view on such a small climb? Well, Beech Mtn. is the highest point in all Sullivan County.
Here's the itinerary:
Day of Arrival:
Hike ~1.7 miles, with no significant elevation change, to a primitive tent site (with outhouse) on Frick Pond.
Day 1:
Hike to Quick Lake, with a pack-less side hike up Beech Mtn. for the view. With overnight packs, we'll hike ~7
miles with ~800 ft. elevation gain. There's a shelter and tent sites on Quick Lake. This is a good fishing spot.
Day 2:
Hike back to the parking area (~6.5 miles; ~800 ft. decent) on different trails than those of Day 1.

Azure Mountain Fire Tower
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
his is the most northwestern fire tower in the challenge and one that requires a 3 hour trip ONE WAY from the Saratoga Area! It is short and steep with switchbacks but should be a lovely hike in spring conditions with chances of great views of Marcy, the Sewards and St. Regis Canoe Area. We could be hiking in deep snow, on packed icy trails or end up in rotten slush with mud and rock in a t-shirt- always tough to predict. Be prepared with snowshoes and spikes just in case.

Niagara Frontier Chapter
We’re inviting you to join us on Saturday, May 2 for a day of hands-on trail work in Allegheny State Park on the Finger Lakes Trail/Conservation Trail. It’s a great way to disconnect from the screen, get your hands dirty, and help clean up a section of a heavily used trail for summertime use, maybe one that you've used in the past. It’s hard work, but the reward is a cleaner, more accessible trail for the whole community—plus, we’ll be covering lunch and snacks for all our volunteers. Spaces are limited, so grab your spot today and help us build a stronger trail community.

Paddle - West River
Genesee Valley Chapter
We will carry our boats a short distance down the old railroad bed and launch there. Jim assures us he will be there to help with the launch site. We will paddle out toward the old rookery, hoping to find heron (or eagle). A few boats at a time should approach the area in silence as we are paddling into the birds' space and we do not want to scare.
,
If after we return to our put in, we have not yet paddled 2 hours, we will paddle under the bridge (if possible ) and continue into that portion of the West River. This is a nice paddle to start the season with! Of course we will help each other with the carry.
,
Be prepared to sign the ADK liability release form, wear you PFD tight and correctly, and keep an eye on fellow paddlers.

Bird Banding and History Tour at the Crown Point State Historic Site
Cold River Chapter
Observe a citizen science collaboration at a bird banding station on the Crown Point site. The volunteers set mist nets to collect, document and band migrating songbirds. Due to the location under the Atlantic Flyway, the site is a premier location for viewing birds migrating north for the season. Watch this experienced team of citizen scientists net hundreds of birds, identify and measure species and record their songs. Viewing tables are set a safe distance from the workstations enabling the public to observe banders at work. Join this outing to see nature at its most mysterious in action.
And that’s not all! Crown Point will have an archaeological field school working on site on May 14 as well. This will be their third consecutive year hosting a Syracuse University Field School, where students and faculty are excavating a site where some soil and rocks were dumped in the 1960s. If you are interested in stopping by to visit the field school, it’s really a great program and worth seeing. Great artifacts and…

Lyon Mountain Fire Tower
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
A challenging fire tower hike with a long drive for those pursuing the ADK Firetower Challenge. Lyon is actually 10 ft taller than Couchsachraga! On a clear day you can see the city of Montreal and the High Peaks! Trailhead is at the ruins of the defunct Lowenberg Ski Area and this spot is known for getting high snowfall. We won't know conditions until closer to the hike. Trailhead may require 4 wheel drive- it is 1 mile on a rutted dirt road that is not maintained in winter. Full on mud season will cancel as we do NOT want to erode our trails further. Prepare for possible black flies with head net, spray of choice and light colored clothing.
