First Brother Hike, Town of Horicon
Cold River Chapter
This is a 2.3 mile (appx) out-and-back hike off Palisade Road near Brant Lake. From the trailhead we’ll hike up a ridgeline to the summit of the First Brother. Approximately 800 feet of elevation will be gained. The summit features open rocks and excellent views to the west towards Brant Lake. Fall colors should be at or near peak. Depending upon conditions and group interest, the outing could be extended a total of 1.5 miles (appx) to the summit of the Second Brother and back. Such an extension would add an additional 550 feet (appx) of elevation gain and bump the ADK Rating up to Level 1, C+ (Fairly Easy).

Mt. Adams
Albany Chapter
This is a 4.8 miles long and 1800 foot elevation gain/loss hike up to the Mt. Adams Fire Tower. The first mile of First part of trail is relatively flat, but the last mile gets to be very steep. With any luck we will be at or just past peak foliage and have some beautiful views of the park. Due to how busy the park will be on the holiday weekend, I highly recommend we carpool to make parking easier.
While this peak is not a high peak, it is in the high peaks wilderness, and the trails are very similar to what you will experience in the rest of the high peaks, so this makes a good introduction to hiking in the high peaks if you haven't done so before.

Weekday High Peaks Hike
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
July's weekday high peaks hike went well, with no problems getting into the AMR lot, so here is the second one. I've listed the hike for Tuesday, but I will change the day to Wednesday or even Thursday if the weather looks better, with a decision to be made on Sunday or Monday before. Weekdays give us the chance to hike from The Garden or the Ausable Mountain Reserve parking lot. Where we go will depend on mountain conditions, which can be very variable in October, and I'm open to suggestions for where to hike. Email me if you might want to come along. Meet at the park and ride at the north end of Media Drive near Northway Exit 18 or at the trailhead. Time TBD. Meeting time will be early, but will depend on the day's hike.

Chapter Meeting
Albany Chapter
Moose have long been present in the State of New York. Historical records suggest that moose were present north of the Mohawk River as far back as the Pleistocene. Due to unfettered forest harvest and market hunting, moose were deemed extirpated from the landscape by as early as 1861. During this time, moose were also extirpated from neighboring Vermont, but populations persisted elsewhere in northeastern North America. It wasn’t until the mid-1980’s that moose began to take up residence in New York once again, with an estimated 6-11 permanent residence by 1986. Over the next four decades, moose have slowly repopulated the Adirondacks. Current population metrics suggest a small but stable population of approximately 700 moose currently reside within the Adirondack Blue Line.

A two-peak day (2 separate hikes) tackling a pair of trailless Catskill 35ers. We’ll start with a 3-mile bushwhack to the summit of Halcott Mountain, climbing steep forested slopes with no marked trail. After returning to the cars, we’ll make a short drive to the Spruceton Road Trailhead for another 3-mile bushwhack up Rusk Mountain. Two rugged off-trail ascents in one day—perfect for hikers looking to sharpen their navigation skills and bag more Catskill peaks.
Mileage: Halcott: 3.1 miles – Rusk: 3.18
Elevation Gain: Halcott 1,736’ – Rusk: 1,594′
Grade: Both C’s

Participants will receive hands-on instruction in cold-weather camping techniques while staying close to their vehicles. Although the campsite is car-accessible, there are no heated facilities. Amenities include a portable toilet (no running water) and a hand pump for drinking water. All activities will be conducted outdoors.
There is no cost for this program, but participants must bring their own food and camping equipment. Some group gear, including winter stoves, may be shared, and a limited amount of gear can be loaned out. Expect to need a sleep system rated to around 0°F—this may require a combination of sleeping bags and pads. In general, we prepare for potential -20°F conditions. Leaders will review each pa…
