Winter Warmup: Noonmark
Albany Chapter
It's time to start getting used to your winter packs and winter gear. This hike will be a beautiful loop going up and over Noonmark. The trail overall is pretty good, but gets very steep at the top. The views from the top are well worth the effort. We definitely will want microspikes for some sections of this hike, and we may be legally required to wear snowshoes if there is 8 inches or more of snow, so be prepared with both. In total, we'll do just about 5.5 miles of trails and about 2400 feet of elevation.

Introduction to Winter Backpacking in Pennsylvania (B)
Long Island Chapter
Ready to take your backpacking skills into the cold season? This two-night program at a large group campsite in Hickory Run State Park, White Haven, PA is designed for hikers with some three-season backpacking experience who want to learn how to safely and comfortably camp in winter conditions.
Participants will receive hands-on instruction in cold-weather camping techniques while staying close to their vehicles. Although the campsite is car-accessible, there are no heated facilities. Amenities include a portable toilet (no running water) and a hand pump for drinking water. All activities will be conducted outdoors.
There is no cost for this program, but participants must bring their own food and camping equipment. Some group gear, including winter stoves, may be shared, and a limited amount of gear can be loaned out. Expect to need a sleep system rated to around 0°F—this may require a combination of sleeping bags and pads. In general, we prepare for potential -20°F conditions. Leaders will review each pa…

Winter Colden
Albany Chapter
The winter season for climbing the 46 starts on December 21. So, we will start the winter season with Colden. We will start from ADK Loj and go in and out via the Lake Arnold trail. There is nothing horribly technical on this route, with the first and last 3 miles being relatively flat, but it is a long day and there are some steep sections. If we're lucky, the rocky trail going up to Lake Arnold will be covered in enough snow that we won't even know the rocks are there. Microspikes and snowshoes will be required for this hike. In the end, it will be 12 miles and 3000 feet of elevation.

Boreas Mountain from The Branch
Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter
A hike/snowshoe to Boreas Mountain to celebrate the first day of winter, and the Greek god of the north wind, winter, and ice. The trail mostly follows old roads and jeep trail for about 5 miles to the site of the former fire tower observer's cabin, and then about one mile on a traditional trail to the summit of Boreas. The panaramic views of the High Peaks, Dix Range, Elk Lake and Clear Pond are simply magnificent, and not to be missed since the public was granted a recreational easement in 2012 along the existing trail to the summit of Boreas. Total round trip is a little over 12 miles. Very easy going along the existing roads. Although not a High Peak, at 3776 feet, Boreas is the 64th highest Adirondack peak. Meetup at the Schroon Lake Tops parking lot at 6:30 am, or the Branch Parking Area at 7:00 am.

Winter Allen
Albany Chapter
This is one of the most remote peaks of the 46, and a very long day. We will meet at the East River trailhead and go in via the East River trail until we hit the Allen herd path. Hopefully the Opalescent River will be frozen over enough to cross. In the event we cannot cross the brook, we will do an alternative hike in the area. With the exception of the central 2 miles, this hike is relatively easy with out any significant elevations for the first/last 8 miles. The mile ascent/descent up the Allen Brook/slide to the peak is significantly steep, but will provide amazing views and butt slides coming down. Microspikes and snowshoes will be required for this hike. In the end, it will be 18 miles and 3600 feet of elevation. Bad weather date will be the 25th.

Winter Marshall
Albany Chapter
Marshall is the 4th of the MacIntyre range, and is easiest to get from Upper Works. We will hike in via the Calamity trail and head up the Herbert Brook herd path. The first and last 5.4 miles are relatively easy to hike. The last mile up the herd path is really the only steep section. If the group desires, we can extend the hike another mile or so and come down the Cold Brook pass to see the plane wreck. Microspikes and snowshoes will be required for this hike. In the end, it will be 14 miles and 2900 feet of elevation. Bad weather date will be the 8th.

Albany Chapter
These three peaks are remote and can be challenging, but each has its own beauty and reward. From the Santanoni trailhead we hike in toward the Bradley Pond leanto. We leave the marked trail there and proceed along herd paths to the three peaks. We will climb Panther first, then Couchsachraga and lastly Santanoni. From Santanoni we will take the “Express Trail” to reconnect with the marked trail.
