Phelps Mountain

Phelps Mountain has an elevation gain of 1,982 feet from the ADK Loj, with a distance of about 8.8 miles round trip.  Phelps offers beautiful views of Colden and other nearby high peaks, which, for the time being, ADK dictates that we can only admire from a distance.  There's a lot of snow on the mountains, so hopefully we'll see some snow-capped mountains, and the snow won't be rotten.  Meet up at Schroon Lake Tops at 6:30 am, or at the High Peaks Information Center at 7:30 am. Azure Mountain Fire Tower

his is the most northwestern fire tower in the challenge and one that requires a 3 hour trip ONE WAY from the Saratoga Area! It is short and steep with switchbacks but should be a lovely hike in spring conditions with chances of great views of Marcy, the Sewards and St. Regis Canoe Area. We could be hiking in deep snow, on packed icy trails or end up in rotten slush with mud and rock in a t-shirt- always tough to predict. Be prepared with snowshoes and spikes just in case. Hosted By: Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter. Region: Adirondacks - Northwest Region. Activity Category: Hiking. Snowshoeing. Trip rating: C+. Leader: Aaren Harris. Leader Email: aarengrace@gmail.com. Leader Phone #: 518-450-3924. Mileage: 2 miles RT. Elevation Gain: 944 ft. Nearest Emergency Medical Facility: submitted Jan 28, 2026. Saturday, April 18, 2026. Meet at 7 am at the Exit 18 Park and Ride on the north end of Media Drive or at the trailhead at 10 a.m.

Lyon Mountain Fire Tower

A challenging fire tower hike with a long drive for those pursuing the ADK Firetower Challenge. Lyon is actually 10 ft taller than Couchsachraga! On a clear day you can see the city of Montreal and the High Peaks! Trailhead is at the ruins of the defunct Lowenberg Ski Area and this spot is known for getting high snowfall. We won't know conditions until closer to the hike. Trailhead may require 4 wheel drive- it is 1 mile on a rutted dirt road that is not maintained in winter. Full on mud season will cancel as we do NOT want to erode our trails further. Prepare for possible black flies with head net, spray of choice and light colored clothing.
