Colden via Lake Arnold

The first 2.3 miles of this 6.3-mile route follows the trail to Marcy Dam. From the dam, we'll continue on the trail toward Avalanche Camp at 3.4 miles, and then make a left turn to start a moderate to steep climb up to Lake Arnold. From the right turn at Lake Arnold it's 1.4 miles to the summit. The terrain gets very steep in sections, but there are views as the path approaches the mountain's false summit, and then turns left as the trail makes its descent to the base of the true summit, then climbs steeply to the top of Mount Colden, where most excellent views await. Distance of 12.6 miles round trip; elevation: 4,714 feet (11th Highest Peak); and elevation gain of about 2,600 feet. Meet up at Schroon Lake Tops parking lot at 6:45 am, or at Adirondack Loj parking lot at 7:45 am. Must have prior winter hiking experience, appropriate winter gear, a good headlamp, and a persevering spirit. This hike is geared for those who enjoy a steady moderate pace and can go the distance.
