Shelving Rock Mountain Hike, Lake George Wild Forest, Fort Ann, NY
This 1.75 mile hike along the eastern shore of Lake George follows a winding, switchback carriage road built by George Knapp in the early 1900s ascending 800 feet to the summit of Shelving Rock Mountain. Once we reach the summit, we will descend to a lower ledge overlooking the Narrows of Lake George where we will take a break to enjoy the views. After a snack/lunch at the overlook, we’ll head back the way we came.
Take Exit 21 off the I-87 Northway for NY-9N toward Lake Luzerne turning left onto 9N. After 0.4 miles, turn right onto 9 South towards the Outlets. After 2.6 miles, turn left onto Route 149 East. Drive 6 miles and turn left onto Buttermilk Falls Road. Drive 11 miles along this road which changes from Buttermilk Falls Road to Sly Pond Road to Shelving Rock Road and becomes a dirt road along the way. As you approach the Hog Town Parking Lot, bear left and continue another 2.5 miles on Shelving Rock Road across a small bridge to Parking Lot #3 which will be on your left.

Jabe Pond Fishing/ Paddle
Jabe Pond is a lovely wilderness pond with Brown, Rainbow and Brook Trout. Artificial lures only, minimum keeper size 12”. There is a parking lot very close to the Pond. However, if the road leading to the parking lot is closed, this makes it a Difficult 1 mile carry in with one very steep hill. The leader will check on the road in advance and notify participants of the road status. Paddlers are welcome to join. The boat launch is directly off Route 8. If you’re coming east on Route 8, it’s on your left soon after the intersection of Palisades Road.

We will paddle from north Schroon starting on River Road to the town center. This is a long and windy river paddle for most of the way, hopefully with a current to help move us along. We will take out at the town beach and shuttle back to cars left at the start.

Inman Pond Trail Hike, Kattiskill Bay
This trail climbs through woods and a stream crossing to get to the pond. We can skirt either or both sides of the pond but there is no official trail around the pond due to private property. We will climb a short distance to the Pond overlook and find a pleasant spot for lunch.

Wakely Mountain hike, Indian Lake
climb 3,744-foot high Wakely Mountain, located off Cedar River Road in the Blue Ridge Wilderness. The trail heads generally in a westerly direction climbing gently for about 2 miles before a steep climb in the last mile. The views from the fire tower are excellent.

Big Moose Lake paddle, Eagle Bay
The ~1200-acre Lake is astride Herkimer & Hamilton counties in Pigeon Lake Wilderness. It is the headwater of the Moose River. Many homes populate the shoreline, few occupied in the early season. We will circumnavigate the Lake. An American Tragedy is a fictional novel by Theodore Dreiser based on a murder on the Lake, the film A Place in the Sun and the Jennifer Donnelly novel A Northern Light.

Bird Banding and History Tour at the Crown Point State Historic Site
Observe a citizen science collaboration at a bird banding station on the Crown Point site. The volunteers set mist nets to collect, document and band migrating songbirds. Due to the location under the Atlantic Flyway, the site is a premier location for viewing birds migrating north for the season. Watch this experienced team of citizen scientists net hundreds of birds, identify and measure species and record their songs. Viewing tables are set a safe distance from the workstations enabling the public to observe banders at work. Join this outing to see nature at its most mysterious in action.
And that’s not all! Crown Point will have an archaeological field school working on site on May 14 as well. This will be their third consecutive year hosting a Syracuse University Field School, where students and faculty are excavating a site where some soil and rocks were dumped in the 1960s. Paddle through 3 lakes connected by the St. Regis River in Paul Smiths, NY. The trip will start at the parking lot at Keese Mills, travel to Lower St. Regis Lake, Spitfire Lake and Upper St. Regis Lake. The lakes are lined with gigantic “Summer Camps” of the well to do, many built in the early 1900s. There are also several bays to explore along the way before tracing our paddle to return.

Spring Bird Walk -- Up Yonda Farm & Environmental Education Center (Bolton Landing)
Spring is in the air! May is a great time to hear and see native and migratory birds in the Adirondacks. Perhaps you have spotted them already in your neighborhood. This will be an easy morning walk of about two miles on flat and sloping terrain in a 75-acre nature preserve that is an e-bird hot spot. We hope to see warblers, flycatchers, thrushes and tanagers. We will stop often and record the bird species identified. Please bring binoculars if you have them.

Hurricane Mountain Hike, Keene
This hike is one of the best “not a High Peaks” hike, with about 2000’ of elevation gain. There is a rock summit, which affords 360-degree views of the High Peaks. It also has a fire tower, which, if open, allows for additional panoramic views. The hike starts with a steady climb. It levels out a bit before climbing again for the last third.

Please bring a main dish, appetizer, or dessert to share. We will have a grill if you would like to grill something for yourself. We hope to hold the potluck on our beach so there will be no electricity. (You will have access to our house if electricity is needed) Please bring your own utensils, plates and beverages. Bonnie Bell Farm Rd. is off rt. 9 on the west side of Loon Lake. From exit 25 drive west on rt 8/ rt 9, turn right onto rt. 9 at OP Fredericks and go about a mile and turn right at a gate to our beach. You can drive down. We will have a sign up.
