Forest Insects & Disease Field Day

Is something bugging your trees? This annual event includes experts on insects and disease who will guide attendees on the identification and treatment of native forest tree diseases and bark beetles. While native insects and diseases are a natural part of the forest, sometimes these organisms damage more trees than we want, especially if we have (usually unknowingly) created a favorable environment for them. This program will help you identify forest insect and diseases that can cause significant tree mortality, damage, or loss of growth, as well as suggest options for management. Cost and registration: $15 per person, Register on-line: uidaho.edu/clearwater-events Contact: UI Extension, Clearwater County 208-476-4434. University Location: Online. Extension Event Type: Event. Thinning & Pruning Field Day

Trees killed by bark beetles or root diseases often make forest owners ask; “What can we do about it?” Whether you have problems with insects or disease, concerns about fire, or just want to improve forest health and growth, the response from foresters is nearly universal: thin your stand. This is especially true in northern Idaho, where forests commonly become overstocked with an unsustainable species mix. Thinning and pruning can favor better adapted tree species, increase forest resilience to drought, improve tree quality, reduce fire risk, improve access, and enhance many other values. In this program, we will discuss basic thinning and pruning concepts, then expand on those concepts in a hands-on field tour. To ensure an effective learning environment, the program is limited to 45 participants. A $20 registration fee includes a field notebook of publications. To register or for questions, please contact the UI Extension Office in Bonner County at 208-263-8511 or bonner@uidaho.edu. Extension Event Type: Event. Field Day. County Office Calendars: Benewah.
