Map & Compass for Forestry - Sandpoint
Do you want to feel confident using a map and compass? Do you think that under the current state of technological development, people still need to learn and maintain certain fundamental skills?
Foresters have traditionally verified locations and distances using a map and compass. It is now common to accomplish these tasks using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, but it can be dangerous to rely exclusively on this technology. Magnetic compasses do not rely on batteries or electronic signals. Both approaches require a solid ability to read and interpret maps.
This program features two-three hours indoors for lecture and practical exercises with maps, followed by field activities using magnetic compasses. The program will be taught by Sean Mitzel, an Idaho Master Forest Steward who has many years of experience in using map and compass for military and forestry applications, together with other Idaho Master Forest Stewards.
To ensure an effective learning environment, each session is limited to 40 p…

Our Gem Speaker Series: Cougar Bay Wetlands Restoration
The Cougar Bay wetlands, located at the mouth of the Cougar Creek watershed on Lake Coeur d'Alene, have been significantly altered over time by grading, channelization and development, resulting in a low-value wetland dominated by invasive reed canary grass. To restore the area, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), with support from the Coeur d'Alene Basin Restoration Partnership, is working to redirect the channelized flow and restore a more natural stream system. The project includes creating off-channel ponds, restoring wetland hydrology and implementing various methods to manage reed canary grass. The project's goals include improving wetland functions, preserving habitats for aquatic species, enhancing water quality in Coeur d'Alene Lake and fostering biodiversity.
About the speaker:
Doug Evans is a natural resources specialist with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), where he has dedicated 25 years to restoration work. His expertise focuses on managing and restoring natural habitats, particularly in…

Landscaping for Fire Prevention - St. Maries
Every summer, we see numerous media reports of homes in the woods being threatened by wildfires. Forest fires are a fact of life in the Inland Northwest. Homes located on forested lands (the "wildland urban interface") can be at high risk from forest fires.
Forest fires are not always easy to stop. But you can take action to reduce the risk of damage to your home from wildfire.
Landscaping for Fire Prevention will help forest homeowners modify their houses and landscapes to make them less likely to burn and easier for firefighters to access.
Participants will view videos, discuss their wildland fire experiences and participate in a simple exercise to assess their home’s interface fire risk.
To ensure an effective learning environment, each session is limited. Successful Tree Planting - Plummer
Promptly renewing a forest with tree seedlings is key to sustainable forestry, whether to replace harvested trees or those that died from fire, insects or disease. Every year that the forest is understocked is a loss in forest growth. Brush or grass taking over a site can make establishing new trees very difficult and expensive. Finally, the Idaho Forest Practice Act requires reforestation within five years of timber harvest.
Successful tree plantings result from thoughtful planning and carefully applied skills. This program features an indoor session, followed by field activities where participants can try various planting tools and stock types.
To ensure an effective learning environment, each session is limited to 40 participants. 10 Acres and A Dream - Sandpoint
Idaho is well known for extensive public lands, so much that people sometimes lose sight of how much private land we have in some regions of the state. For example, Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai and Benewah counties collectively have over 1.5 million acres of private lands — 47.5% of all lands in those counties. Some of these parcels are in large blocks, but most of them are smaller parcels, owned by an ever-growing number of private landowners. Uses of the lands vary from forest, to pasture, to crops.
People who move to the country often have many ideas as to what they want from their land, but may be less aware of how to achieve those goals or the tasks associated with living on and maintaining rural property.
University of Idaho Extension offers this one-day program to help owners of small rural acreages manage their land to meet their goals. 10 Acres and A Dream was the idea of Idaho Master Forest Stewards, most of whom are private landowners themselves and have interacted with a variety of rural landowne…

By participating in this program, logging operators will be better able to communicate with landowners, foresters and other natural resource professionals, enabling them to operate more efficiently and protect environmental values more effectively. Over 2,000 Idaho loggers have participated in LEAP thus far. Participants learn about and discuss fundamental concepts and terminology related to forest ecology, silviculture, streamside/riparian zone ecology and water quality issues. LEAP workshops are designed specifically for loggers and logging contractors, who are given first priority for class registration. However, forest owners, mill employees, consulting foresters and others involved in forest management operations may also register if space is available. LEAP also fulfills a requirement of Idaho’s “Pro-Lo…

Identifying Idaho's Trees - Coeur d'Alene
Because we have such a varied range of geography, soils and precipitation patterns, Idaho has a wider variety of native trees than most other Rocky Mountain states. The first step in caring for these trees, whether they be in a landscape or in a forest, is correct species identification.
Distinguishing between Idaho’s trees can be a daunting task for beginners. Through a combination of images and live samples, Identifying Idaho’s Trees will help participants quickly identify Idaho’s most common native trees.
To ensure an effective learning environment, each session is limited to 40 participants. Please register online at: https://marketplace.uidaho.edu/ -scroll to and click on “University of Idaho Extension: Panhandle Forestry,” A $10 registration fee includes handouts and refreshments. For registration questions, contact the University of Idaho Extension office in Kootenai County 208-292-2525.

Our Gem Speaker Series: Water Smart Programming
North Kootenai Water District Automatic Metering Infrastructure Project
The North Kootenai Water District (NKWD) is a non-profit organization providing drinking water to over 11,300 people across 200 square miles through 15 public water systems. The district primarily sources its water from 26 wells tapping the Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, with a small portion drawn from Hayden Lake and Lake Coeur d’Alene. To improve water supply reliability and promote conservation, NKWD is replacing its manual and radio-read meters with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). The new AMI meters feature cellular endpoints for real-time data transmission and include leak detection technology. Following a successful pilot project, which showed a 12% reduction in water usage, the district projects annual savings of 392.8 acre-feet, or 128 million gallons of water.
About the speaker:
Suzanne Scheidt joined the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ) in the Coeur d’Alene Regional Office after college,…
