Internationalization is a complex and constantly evolving phenomenon, the approaches to which vary widely depending on institutional, national and regional contexts. What is similar across contexts, however, is the enormous turbulence facing higher education institutions today, which in turn presents significant challenges and opportunities for carrying forward effective and transformational internationalization agendas. Gateway Spotlight: The UN SDGs: Do they really have a place within education abroad programming?

In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet and improve lives, today and in the future. The SDGs provide a comprehensive framework for sustainable development that addresses economic, social, and environmental challenges at large and are based on a vision that no one should be left behind. They aim to be achieved by 2030 which can only happen if all sectors—governments, businesses, NGOs, educational institutions, and the public—come together, get involved, and build partnerships to create a better future for everyone. As more education abroad professionals incorporate the SDGs into their programs, we need to ask whether participating students are aware of them and their importance and whether or not they have a place in education abroad programming.  Join Ravi Raj, CEO of Authentica, Roberta Espinoza, vice provost for Global-Local Affairs at Loyola Marymount University, and Brooke Roberts, Founder of Inside Study Abroad,… Event Type: Professional Webinars. Making Space for Learning in your EA Itinerary Using Reflection Strategy Mapping

Program leaders often express frustration with the quality of reflective work that students produce through education abroad.  There are many reasons why learner reflections may not meet expectations.  One common source is the study abroad itinerary itself, which can become over packed with experiences but insufficiently scaffolded to support learners in making meaning and generating critical insights about the experience based on program goals.  This session introduces educators to a critical reflection mapping strategy to help them alleviate this problem.  Together we will review examples of program level strategies and then work together to draft our own.  Participants will leave the session with a mapping template and tips to apply in their own practice.  Audience: education abroad professionals and educators in improving their use of critical reflection to strengthen student learning in applied and experiential settings.  These sessions will not be recorded.
