Walking Club
Register your Walking Club for Fall 2026 here!
The Walking Club Challenge is a campus-wide wellness competition designed to promote connection, movement, and fun among faculty and staff. Employees form teams of 3 to 5 members and earn points by completing group walks. Each time at least three team members take a walk of 15-minutes or more together on work days, the team earns 1 point. The team with the most points at the end of the challenge wins. Simple, social, and great for wellness!
Steps:
Select a Team Leader and register your walking clubs of 3 to 5 IVC employees using this form.
Once you are registered, the designated Team Leader will be sent a spreadsheet to record the number of 15-minute (or more) walks your team takes during the semester.
The team with the most walks wins!
Rules:
Each walk must be a minimum of 15 minutes, but even a longer walk still just counts as 1 walk.
At least 3 team members must be present for the walk to count.
Walks must fit into your regular workday and be taken…

Can Students Choose What They Can't Find? (Zoom)
Faculty, administrators, and staff dedicate countless hours to equity measures and student success measures designed to support students. But what if only some students can actually find and navigate what has been built for them? What if access is neither equal nor equitable in practice, even when the intention is there? Come explore these concepts through the results of the ZTC Degree Feasibility Study, conducted by the IVC Library, IVC students, and the OER Committee, and funded by the Michelson 20 Million Minds Foundation Spark Grant. These findings have already been shared with state leaders. Now come hear what our students found and what faculty can do to help ensure that all students can navigate what we build.

Creating digital content that is accessible to everyone is a vital part of fostering an inclusive campus community. Fortunately, Microsoft 365 is equipped with a powerful suite of built-in tools designed to help you build accessible documents, emails, and presentations. In this 50-minute workshop, we will explore practical, easy-to-use features that ensure your materials meet accessibility standards without adding hours to your workflow. Whether you are designing a syllabus, presenting a lecture, or sharing department updates, this session will empower you to create content with everyone in mind.

Good Girl: Back and Badder Than Ever. 5 decades of music that challenges social norms for women (Zoom)
They told her to smile, be quiet, and behave. She made a platinum record about it instead. Join us for a lunch hour journey through 5 decades of music from women who refused to play by the rules. We're spinning songs that push back against gender roles and prove being “good” was never the goal. We may even let one song from the men crash the party — if the lyrics earn it. This is a listening-only session; all mics will be muted, but attendees are welcome to join the conversation in chat. Have a song that belongs on this playlist? Email your suggestions to Brandee Idleman at bidleman@ivc.edu.
⚠️ Parental Advisory: This playlist is unapologetically real. Some songs may contain profanity, mature themes, sexual content, and/or strong language. Because apparently that's what happens when you silence women for too long.

Experience Matters: Tailoring Instruction for Adult Learners (Zoom)
Adult learners bring a wealth of assets to the classroom, but they also face distinct challenges that require a shift in how we approach instruction. In this interactive workshop that aligns with the campus's Adult Learner Initiative, we’ll explore methods for honoring adult students' life experience and designing meaningful assignments that align with real-world applications. The session will also cover "intrusive" practices to connect students to vital campus resources, like the Career Center and the Spot, directly through instructional time. You will leave with a toolkit of teaching applications—from campus resource scavenger hunts to jigsaw activities and equitable grading practices—that can help boost retention and success for our adult learner population.

What Makes Student Support Spaces Work? Lessons from the MESA Center and Asset-Based Student Success Research
What Makes Student Support Spaces Work? Lessons from the MESA Center and Asset-Based Student Success Research
This session explores what makes student support spaces truly effective, using findings from an asset mapping study of the Irvine Valley College MESA Center. While many support programs focus on tutoring, advising, and resources, this research highlights the critical role of intangible factors such as belonging, cultural affirmation, peer mentorship, and validation in shaping student success.
Drawing on student interviews, environmental observations, and research frameworks such as Community Cultural Wealth and Funds of Knowledge, this session will examine how MESA creates a “home-like” environment where students feel seen, supported, and empowered.
Participants will explore how these practices can be adapted beyond specialized centers and applied across classrooms, programs, and services at IVC to improve student engagement, persistence, and completion.

Teaching Squares Orientation
Have you ever wanted to see what goes on in other classrooms? Teaching squares are a way to observe other faculty on campus in their classes, learn more about their students’ experience across campus, and earn PD hours.
Participating faculty will be put into cross-disciplinary groups of 4. You will attend a brief orientation meeting on Monday, September 21 from 4:00-5:00 on Zoom.
Then, you will work with your group to find a time to visit each other's classes for 1-hour observations (3 hours total) at some point during the semester.
At the end of the semester, we will meet as a group for a "square share" to share something great you saw in each class and something you will take back to your own teaching practice, with a focus on the positive.

Just Transition: Academic Academy for Climate Justice and Action (External)

Rooted in Indigenous frameworks for equity, healing, and ecological sustainability, ASCCC's Just Transitions Academic Academy invites California community college faculty to explore in community ways that faculty leaders are already doing this work, with the hope to inspire future innovation that centers climate justice in our work as educators.
Join faculty leaders and California Community College Chancellor’s Office Climate Fellows from across the state for an academy designed to build climate literacy, deepen climate justice competencies, and provide faculty with a space to learn about and explore climate justice in their work.

Rules:
