Women of Color Code (WoCCode) Webinar: Laura Gutierrez Funderburk

Laura Gutierrez Funderburk works as a data scientist at Seaspan Ship Management LTD. Prior to this role, she worked as a data scientist at Cybera for the Callysto project, a federally-funded initiative in Canada helping K12 students and teachers learn data literacy, computational thinking and programming. She is experienced in facilitating data science learning experiences which celebrate diversity and are tailored to a variety of skill levels. Laura holds a Bachelor of Mathematics from Simon Fraser University (SFU). Her alma mater recognized her work in creating enriching learning experiences by awarding her the Terry Fox Gold medal. Laura enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for coding and problem solving, and hopes this will inspire students to explore mathematics and data science. Audience: Faculty & Staff. Graduate. Natural Language Processing Workshop Series

Written text contains a wealth of information that can be turned into research data to study almost every aspect of human behavior, human health and our society. However, converting text to usable data requires an understanding of standard techniques from the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). MIDAS and the AI Lab are jointly organizing a monthly series of NLP workshops during the Fall 2022 semester. The first installment is on Sept. 19. In the first workshop of the series, we will provide a broad overview of NLP and introduce basic concepts used in NLP, including keyword counting, sentiment classification, and topic modeling. Additional topics include how NLP can be used, what the data look like, what (social science) questions could be answered using NLP, and more. Audience: Researchers. Faculty & Staff. Event Type: Lectures & Seminars. Monday, September 19, 2022, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM. 340 West Hall. For more info visit midas.umich.edu.
