9th Annual Jazz Fest featuring Kris Johnson
Student Life
Kris Johnson is a Detroit-based trumpeter, composer, arranger, film composer, and educator whose work spans orchestral commissions, musical theatre, film scoring, and contemporary jazz. As a performer and arranger, Kris has contributed to seven GRAMMY-nominated albums, including the 2024 GRAMMY-winning Basie Swings the Blues by the Count Basie Orchestra. From 2008 to 2019, he toured internationally with the Basie Orchestra as both soloist and arranger, performing at major venues such as the Apollo Theater, Hollywood Bowl, Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center. Kris currently serves as Assistant Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

International Women’s Day Celebration: Honoring Our Legacies

BROOKLYN PARK, MN – February 4, 2026 – North Hennepin Community College (NHCC) and the City of Brooklyn Park invite the community to its 4th Annual International Women’s Day Celebration: Honoring Our Legacies on Wednesday, March 18, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at NHCC. This free evening event will highlight stories of strength, legacy, and belonging, featuring a keynote presentation, A Home on the Page, by acclaimed Hmong American writer Kao Kalia Yang.
The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. with doors opening and an on-site book sale. At 6 p.m. Yang will deliver an energizing talk followed by audience Q&A from 6:45–7:15 p.m. The evening concludes with small bites, mocktails, and a book signing with the author. No registration is required, and all are welcome. The event will also be livestreamed on YouTube.

Featuring a world premiere commission for our ensembles by jazz composer Kristin Sponcia, along with music by Felix Mendelssohn, Emily Crocker, Steven Leek, Gordon Lightfoot, and Paul Simon, our student choirs and soloists will take the audience on an oceanic musical journey.
