Get to know the birds of Lake Julian, one of Buncombe County's birding hotspots! We will start with a walk along the shore of Lake Julian and ends with birding on the lake from Lake Julian’s pontoon boat. Free, Registration Required. Binoculars are available upon request but supplies are limited. Dress for the weather!

Wander Buncombe Naturalist Hikes - Folk Art Center (MST) - Lunch Rocks
Join Caitlin and Frank on this hike with a view! This is a 4.9 mile out and back hike that is moderate to difficult on the Mountains to Sea Trail with approximately 900 foot elevation change. Ages 8+ are invited to join us. There is no cost to join the hike, however registration is required.

Fishing Club
Youth up to age 15 are invited to join us for our inaugural Fishing Club at Lake Julian! Participants can attend one or all dates. Families are invited to join for an evening of fun and fishing. Our CORE Van will also be on site with games and activities. Each session will start with a brief education session followed by fishing. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing pole. Bait will be provided and a limited number of fishing poles will be available to use. This is a great opportunity to be introduced to fishing and see if joining our Kid's Fishing Tournament on May 17th is right for you! FREE, registration required. All youth must be accompanied by an adult.

Wander Buncombe Naturalist Hikes - Craggy Gardens
Join Caitlin and Frank on this hike with a view! This is a 1.25 mile out and back hike that is moderately difficult with 200ft elevation gain. Ages 8+ are invited to join us. There is no cost to join the hike, however registration is required.

Fishing Club
Youth up to age 15 are invited to join us for our inaugural Fishing Club at Lake Julian! Participants can attend one or all dates. Families are invited to join for an evening of fun and fishing. Our CORE Van will also be on site with games and activities. Each session will start with a brief education session followed by fishing. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing pole. Bait will be provided and a limited number of fishing poles will be available to use. This is a great opportunity to be introduced to fishing and see if joining our Kid's Fishing Tournament on May 17th is right for you! FREE, registration required. All youth must be accompanied by an adult.

Kids' Fishing Tournament - Lake Julian Park
This event is open to all youth 15 and under. Competitors will be divided into age groups (0-5, 6-10, and 11-15) with prizes in each for Biggest Fish (GRAND PRIZE), Smallest Fish, and Most Fish Caught.
This is a catch and release tournament. Each fish that is caught must be brought one at a time to the measuring station. After each fish has been measured, they will be released back into the lake. Your $10 registration fee includes a bucket, bait, plus snacks and drinks. You must be in the measuring station line before the horn goes off at 11:00 am to have your fish measured. Competitors must bring their own fishing poles and tackle.

Join Caitlin and Frank on this hike! This is a 3.5 mile easy to moderately challenging out and back hike in the Bent Creek Experimental Forest with approximately 300 foot elevation change. Ages 8+ are invited to join us. There is no cost to join the hike, however registration is required.

Get to know the birds of Lake Julian, one of Buncombe County's birding hotspots! We will start with a walk along the shore of Lake Julian and ends with birding on the lake from Lake Julian’s pontoon boat. Free, Registration Required. Buncombe County Parks Update - Open and Closed Parks
Many Buncombe County Parks were impacted by Hurricane Helene. While we are working diligently reopen parks as quickly as we can, some parks continue to remain closed. Please see the list below for which parks are open and which parks continue to be closed for safety reasons.
OPEN Parks: Lake Julian Park (please note, some disc golf holes remain closed), Hominy Valley Park, North Buncombe Fields, Cane Creek Playground, Buncombe County Sports Park, Corcoran Paige River Park, and Hominy Creek River Park. Please note, we do not recommend use of the river at this time.
CLOSED Parks: Charles D. Owen Park, Karpen Soccer Field, Collier Cove Nature Preserve, Alexander River Park, Walnut Island River Park, Bent Creek River Park, Glen Bridge River Park, and Ledges Whitewater Park.
