Buncombe County Parks Update - Open and Closed Parks

Parks & Recreation Many Buncombe County Parks were impacted by Hurricane Helene.  While we are working diligently reopen parks as quickly as we can, some parks continue to remain closed. Please see the list below for which parks are open and which parks continue to be closed for safety reasons. OPEN Parks:  Lake Julian Park (please note, some disc golf holes remain closed), Hominy Valley Park, Collier Cove Nature Preserve, North Buncombe Fields, Cane Creek Playground, Buncombe County Sports Park, Corcoran Paige River Park, Bent Creek River Park, Ledges Whitewater Park, and Hominy Creek River Park.  If people choose to recreate on the river, we strongly encourage them to be aware of changes on streambanks and in the riverbed and the potential for unknown debris from Helene. CLOSED Parks:  Charles D. Parks & Recreation Many Buncombe County Parks were impacted by Hurricane Helene.  While we are working diligently reopen parks as quickly as we can, some parks continue to remain closed. Paper Play: Peace Catchers with Collage

Fairview The inspiration for our project this month is a “Peace Catcher” by artist Lucie Duclos (@lucieduclos). It has also been called a Wind Catcher or Dream Catcher. Your paper selection, stitching and bead choices will make your “catcher” unique.The base of the “catcher” will be collaged with colored tissue and other thin papers onto heavy watercolor paper using a matte medium. Once dry you will choose how to cut, stitch and embellish your design. Wander Buncombe Naturalist Hikes - Collier Cove Nature Preserve

On Saturday, July 19, for a scenic hike through Collier Cove Nature Preserve, a peaceful 29-acre woodland tucked into the hills of South Asheville. This local favorite offers quiet trails, lush forest, and beautiful mountain views—perfect for those looking to enjoy the outdoors close to home. Led by a knowledgeable staff, we’ll explore the rich ecology of the area—learning about native flora and fauna.  The hike will follow a 2 mile moderate trail with some about 300 ft elevation gain and uneven terrain, making it a great outing for those looking for a bit of a challenge without venturing too far. Stuffed Animal Sleepover Drop-Off

Oakley/South Asheville Drop off and register your stuffed animal friend at the Oakley/South Asheville Library on Tuesday, July 22nd or Thursday, July 24th before 6pm. Your stuffed animal will spend Thursday night listening to stories, playing games, and probably staying up very late! And who knows what they'll get up to alone in the library all day Friday! Swannanoa Groovin’ is a  free-admission outdoor concert series benefiting two Swannanoa nonprofit organizations: The Friends of the Swannanoa Library and the Swannanoa Community Council. These events are held at Grovemont Park, adjacent to the Swannanoa Library.
