Poetry Contest

Fairview Library APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH  To celebrate, the Friends of Fairview Library are hosting a poetry contest.   Entrants are asked to submit a poem with a theme relating to the pandemic.  All styles are welcome:  haiku, sonnet, limerick, rhyming, narrative; and the poems can speak to an experience, a feeling or anything else related to the pandemic.    Contest Rules:  Open to all ages  Only one poem can be submitted  Poems must be original and not previously published  Each Poem should have a title  Each poem should be no longer than 250 words.  Entries must be received by April 30  One prize will be awarded to an adult (18-up)  and one prize will be awarded to a child.     Poems can be submitted digitally to Marsha Mills mwjack@bellsouth.net or dropped off in person at the library.  Each poem should state the writers name, age, contact information and your willingness to have your poem published in the Fairview Town Crier.  Winners will be announced in May and the winning poems will… Location: Fairview Library - 1 Taylor Rd. - Fairview. West Asheville Library Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, AARP Tax-Aide is changing the way you can get help with your taxes in 2021. You will need an appointment this year to speak with a tax help aide at the library. At your appointment, you can drop off your tax documents and you’ll be given another appointment in about 2 weeks to pick up your paperwork and completed tax form. The Poetry of Place: Bringing Landscapes to Life

Pack Memorial Library Celebrate National Poetry Month with Buncombe County Special Collections and local novelist and poet Wayne Caldwell. Caldwell has crafted a poetry collection that renders the experience of living life in a single, exquisite place in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in his book, “Woodsmoke.” Join Wayne for a 90-minute virtual poetry class, in which he discusses turning our internal musings into detailed portraits of the homeplace and landscapes we love. He discusses how to use sensory detail to transport readers to that specific place and time, just as his fictional poet, Posey Green, put his readers “in the shadow of the mountain my father said was mother to us all.” This event will be held virtually over Zoom. Poet Mildred Barya

Black Mountain Library Celebrate National Poetry month with WNC poet and author Mildred Barya.  Born in Uganda, Mildred is an Assistant Professor of English at UNCA, where she teaches poetry, fiction, hybrid writing, and world literature. Mildred has published numerous short stories for literary magazines and anthologies, as well as three books of poetry: Give me Room to Move My Feet, The Price of Memory after the Tsunami, and Men Love Chocolates But They Don’t Say, which won the Uganda National Award for Poetry Publication in 2002. She was awarded the Pan African Prize for Africana Literary Fiction in 2008, and received the North Carolina Humanities Council, 2020 Linda Flowers Literary Award for her non-fiction entry, Being Here in This Body. Appalachian Music Lunch & Learn w/ Zoe & Cloyd

They will perform a number of regional tunes and discuss the diverse roots of mountain music, as well as their own connection to the music of the region.  Hailing from opposite ends of the Appalachian mountains, Zoe & Cloyd is renowned fiddler and vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist John Cloyd Miller. Pack Memorial Library Because of the Covid-19 restrictions, AARP Tax-Aide is changing the way you can get help with your taxes in 2021. You will need an appointment this year to speak with a tax help aide at the library. At your appointment, you can drop off your tax documents and you’ll be given another appointment in about 2 weeks to pick up your paperwork and completed tax form.
