Join us for an afternoon of dance, music and poetry celebrating Deaf and disability pride. Held during Disability Pride Month, this special event marks the launch of Out of the Box by Trish Harris, an illustrated book that shares the stories of 25 Deaf and disabled artists, activists and adventurers from Aotearoa New Zealand.
Written for readers aged 12 and up, Out of the Box profiles people who have challenged societal expectations and claimed their space. The short, engaging stories celebrate both big achievements and everyday life. They show that many of the mountains disabled people face are created by society – and that those mountains can be moved.
The book also includes a timeline of key Deaf and disability milestones, highlighting a rich, sobering and often overlooked history. Illustrations are by Benjamin Ackerman and Peter Woodfield, final-year Bachelor of Design (Communication) students at Otago Polytechnic.

Wā Tākaro is a fun, free programme where tamariki (children), taiohi (teens) and pākeke (adults) can meet up to play fun te reo games and meet others with a passion for te reo Māori. Expect fun, laughter, and a great chance to flex your language muscles – and hopefully learn a new kupu (word) or two!
Nau mai, haere mai – Māori learners of all ages and abilities are welcome. Tamariki and rangatahi under the age of 14 do need to be accompanied by an older whānau member.

Get cosy at Miramar Library for a short evening talk on the history of the ‘lamp factory’ ZELMA (New Zealand Electric Lamp Manufacturers).
Hear about the site on Tauhinu Road and the local workers who produced lightbulbs day and night for the war effort and many years beyond. This event also marks the opening of an accompanying exhibition, which will be on display in the library for three weeks.
The New Zealand Electric Lamp Manufacturers opened in 1940, during the Second World War. At the time, electricity had only recently become commonplace in homes, and the country soon faced supply shortages and “trial blackouts.” The need for domestic production boosted factory employment, with ZELMA becoming a major local employer.
By the time it closed in 1999, the factory was producing up to 20 million lightbulbs each year. Although the main site was demolished soon after closure, the former staff cafeteria still stands and is now part of the Greek Akarnanian Brotherhood on Byron Street.

Wā Tākaro is a fun, free programme where tamariki (children), taiohi (teens) and pākeke (adults) can meet up to play fun te reo games and meet others with a passion for te reo Māori. Expect fun, laughter, and a great chance to flex your language muscles – and hopefully learn a new kupu (word) or two!
Nau mai, haere mai – Māori learners of all ages and abilities are welcome. Tamariki and rangatahi under the age of 14 do need to be accompanied by an older whānau member.

Join us and our doggy guests from Canine Friends Pet Therapy for Read to Kurī at the library. You can book a 15-minute session to sit with one of our friendly dogs and read your favourite book, or one you've found at the library.
Read to Kurī aims to help children improve their literacy, self-confidence, and self-esteem in a relaxed, non-judgemental environment. This programme is perfect for tamariki aged 5+ who would like to practice their reading skills while making a new canine friend at the library.
