Author Talk: Wake Smith, "Pandora's Toolbox"

Adults Reaching net zero emissions will not be the end of the climate struggle, but only the end of the beginning. For centuries thereafter, temperatures will remain elevated; climate damages will continue to accrue and sea levels will continue to rise. Even the urgent and utterly essential task of reaching net zero cannot be achieved rapidly by emissions reductions alone. To hasten net zero and minimize climate damages thereafter, we will also need massive carbon removal and storage. We may even need to reduce incoming solar radiation in order to lower unacceptably high temperatures. Such unproven and potentially risky climate interventions raise mind-blowing questions of governance and ethics. Pandora's Toolbox offers readers an accessible and authoritative introduction to both the hopes and hazards of some of humanity's most controversial technologies, which may nevertheless provide the key to saving our world. (from publisher) This is a hybrid event. Join us in person in the Baldwin Room or online with the Zoom… Room: Baldwin Family Lecture Room. Age Range: Adults. Event Type: Author Talks. Love and Other Sorrows: A conversation with Iris Smyles and Frederic Tuten

Adults A conversation with Iris Smyles and Frederic Tuten on the occasion of their new books, Droll Tales and The Bar at TwilightHaving drawn comparisons to such disparate figures as Fran Lebowitz, Edith Wharton, and James Joyce, Iris Smyles’ irreverent stories and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Vogue, BOMB, Paris Review Daily, The Baffler, and Best American Travel Writing. Now, in DROLL TALES (Turtle Point Press; July 5, 2022), Smyles moves the spotlight off her eponymous anti-heroine from her earlier books, Dating Tips for the Unemployed (a semi-finalist for the Thurber Prize) and Iris Has Free Time, to illuminate a wider and more mysterious world. Acting here as a sort of literary P.T. Barnum, she draws back the curtain on a wondrous variety show: an oddball menagerie of melancholy heroes in fabulous adventures that range from the mundane to the marvelous. Occasionally the author appears among them donning various guises—as narrator, supporting character, doppelganger,… Room: Outdoors. Age Range: Adults. Event Type: Author Talks. Contact: Reference. Saturday Book Discussion: "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Adults Join a Reference Librarian for a Saturday Book Discussion Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals from its war wounds, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer's son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julian Carax. But when he sets out to find the author's other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. Author Talk and Book Signing: Eve Karlin "Track 61"

Adults Midnight, June 13, 1942: Peter Burger stands on a foggy beach, ears primed as a submarine hull scrapes the sandy sea bottom. Grete is drawn to Peter’s brooding vulnerability and the pair instantly bond. But as Grete uncovers the truth about Peter and his secret mission ten stories below Grand Central Terminal, she finds herself tackling moral decisions with life-threatening consequences. Author Talk: Cynthia Barnett "The Sound of the Sea"

Adults Join us on Zoom for this author talk about "The Sound of the Sea: Seashells and the Fate of the Oceans" by Cynthia Barnett ABOUT THE TALK: The human fascination with seashells is primal. Archeological evidence suggests that Neanderthals collected cockle shells on the coast of what is modern Spain, perhaps giving preference to those they found beautiful. Native Americans built “great cities of shell” along the coasts, later carted off for road fill. Another generation burned with “shell fever” in Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s time. In her program The Sound of the Sea, environmental author Cynthia Barnett will introduce the long, rich and surprisingly profound relationship between humans and seashells. Traveling from Florida to the Bahamas to the Maldives, West Africa, and beyond, Barnett explores the ancient history of shells as global currency, their use as religious and luxury objects, and the remarkable marine mollusks that make them. For eons, shells and their makers have reflected humanity’s shifting attitudes… Room: Online. Age Range: Adults. Event Type: Author Talks. Contact: Reference. Email: reference@easthamptonlibrary.org.
