Author Talk and Book Signing: "Star Crossed" by Simon Worrell and Heather Dune Macadam

Adults Paris, 1940. The City of Light has fallen under German Occupation. Among patriotic Parisians, the pursuit of art, culture, and jazz have become bold acts of defiance. So has forbidden romance for talented and spirited Jewish teenager Annette Zelman, a student at the Beaux-Arts, and dashing young Catholic poet Jean Jausion. Despite their devout families’ vehement opposition, the young couple finds acceptance at the famed Café de Flore, whose habitues include Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Pablo Picasso, Django Reinhardt, and other luminaries of the Latin Quarter’s creative world. For a time, Annette and Jean feel they have eluded the brute might of the relentless Nazis -- and more immediately, their parents’ threats and demands. But as restrictions on the Jewish community escalate to arrests and deportations, the maleficent forces gathering around the young lovers set them on divergent and tragically inevitable paths. Sci Fic book group "Paradox Hotel" by Rob Hart

Adults Join us for a discussion of "Paradox Hotel" by Rob Hart  "January Cole’s job just got a whole lot harder. Not that running security at the Paradox was ever really easy. Nothing’s simple at a hotel where the ultra-wealthy tourists arrive costumed for a dozen different time periods, all eagerly waiting to catch their “flights” to the past. Or where proximity to the timeport makes the clocks run backward on occasion—and, rumor has it, allows ghosts to stroll the halls. None of that compares to the corpse in room 526. The one that seems to be both there and not there. The one that somehow only January can see." It Begins from Within: A Character Plot Development Workshop

Adults Just as we experience triumphs and setbacks, tensions and release, times of hope and fear, so too should our written stories, but the key to crafting realistic, complex narratives is a balance between these forces. In this generative workshop, we’ll discuss how to navigate this balance, a few foundational techniques behind strong, well-paced, and intricate plot structures, then through guided writing prompts and exercises, we'll take it a bit further by exploring how conflict and tension are built naturally, rooted in character motivation and development, and uses a healthy dose of chaos and surprise. We’ll also discuss revision strategies and how to layer these techniques to add complexity and depth to your writing. Participants will leave with plenty of ideas for possible stories, plot structures, and pages of new writing. Laptops are encouraged, but not required.
