Mystery Book Club: The Dry

Adults "After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead. Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there’s more to Luke’s death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets." Some of the more notorious mobsters were Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Moe Dalitz, Sam Giancana, Tony Accardo, and Nick Civella, as well as the men they chose to carry out their plans, such as Tony Spilotro, Lefty Rosenthal, and Donald Angelini. Sin City Gangsters devotes a chapter to Jimmy Hoffa, and how the Teamsters Pension Fund financed the mob’s casinos. 2023 Winter Film Festival: Between Land and Sea

Adults Between Land and Sea – a year in the life of an Irish surf town at the mercy of the Atlantic Ocean. This observational feature– at times intimate, at times epic – embeds itself in the Big Wave surf community to present a thoroughly engaging and visually stunning portrait of the ever-changing life at land’s end. In the dead of night on July 24, 2013, John Aldridge was thrown off the back of the Anna Mary while his fishing partner, Anthony Sosinski, slept below. As desperate hours ticked by, Sosinski, the families, the local fishing community, and the U.S. Coast Guard in three states mobilized in an unprecedented search effort that culminated in a rare and exhilarating success. Neal Gabler in conversation with David Alpern

Adults In Against the Wind, acclaimed biographer Neal Gabler tackles the contradictions inherent in Ted Kennedy, a man riven by deep personal flaws who nevertheless was, as one observer put it, “publicly moral,” sincerely committed to making a better, more compassionate world. As a young senator and the heir to his brothers’ crusades, he tackled with the liberal wind. But with America’s tectonic shift toward conservatism begun by Nixon and completed by Reagan, Kennedy was forced to sail against the wind, using his formidable and hard-won legislative prowess in defense of communal responsibility when it had been displaced by a valorization of individual responsibility. Bio: Neal Gabler is the author of five books: An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood; Winchell: Gossip, Power and the Culture of Celebrity; Life: the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality; Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination; and, most recently, Barbra Streisand: Redefining Beauty, Femininity, and Power for the Y… Room: Baldwin Family Lecture Room.
