Long Island Reads 2024 Book Discussion: Better Living Through Birding

Adults Long Island Reads will honor Christian Cooper in person and online at an award ceremony on April 21, 2024 at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library. From sharpened senses that work just as well at a protest as in a park to what a bird like the Common Grackle can teach us about self-acceptance, Better Living Through Birding exults in the pleasures of a life lived in pursuit of the natural world and invites you to discover them yourself. Why Better Living Through Birding? “Identifying himself as a ’Black gay activist birder,’ Cooper recounts his longtime love for the winged creatures, nurtured during his Long Island childhood and college years at Harvard. With colorful andsometimes snarky commentary… Cooper reflects on how his hobby provided skills…that have helped… Room: Baldwin Family Lecture Room. Age Range: All. Event Type: Book Discussions. Iolanthe, or The Peer and the Peri: presented by G&S Light Opera Co of LI

Adults ‘Iolanthe’ Comes to East Hampton,     Mortals and immortals come face to face in the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island’s 2024 production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s classic Iolanthe, coming to the East Hampton Library on Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m. Iolanthe—which debuted in 1883, with book and lyrics by W.S. Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan—is one of the most beloved of all the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, especially for its perfect balance of words and music, humor and drama, magic and political satire.  The current production is the Light Opera Company’s first since 2015. The story is a whimsical one, involving a shepherd lad named Strephon, who has the unusual problem of being half fairy and half mortal … his mother was a fairy, his unknown father a mortal, and he’s a fairy down to the waist, though his legs are mortal.  When Strephon falls in love with Phyllis, a wealthy heiress who is a ward in chancery and sought after in marriage by half the House of Lords, it sets up a conflict… Room: Baldwin Family Lecture Room. Mystery Book Club: Mother-Daughter Murder Night by Nina Simon

Adults Join a reference librarian for this book discussion. High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does. Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She’ll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power. With Jack and Beth’s help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservatio… Room: Online. Tennessee Walt: From Bakersfield with Love Live Concert

Adults The 1950s and 1960s were the era of the “Nashville Sound,” a sleek, pop-oriented brand of country music that featured lush string arrangements, sweet vocal backing and lead singers in garish, rhinestone-studded outfits. In 1960s California, however, a reaction to the Nashville Sound arose, known as “the Bakersfield Sound” and featuring small, electric-guitar-based bands, a driving beat and a preference for gritty subject matter focused on troubled relationships, hard work and rugged independence. Now Tennessee Walt offers From Bakersfield with Love, an all-new concert of songs by iconic stars Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, as well as lesser-known artists such as Tommy Collins, Susan Raye, Jean Shepard, Red Simpson and Wynn Stewart, the man who pioneered the Bakersfield Sound, while looking at its roots, the behind-the-scenes story of its success and its enduring influence on today’s country. Sci Fic book group "Miracle Visitors," Ian Watson

Adults Join us for a discussion of Ian Watson's book "Miracle Visitors" "An unusually brilliant and mind-stretching metaphysical quest from one of the most exciting talents in science fiction. John Deacon uses hypnosis to help his patients reach altered states of consciousness. One of his subjects, Michael Peacocke, is unusually susceptible and in their first session together, Michael recalls a "close encounter"--in both senses of the term--with an alien. Deacon, skeptical of the story, dismisses it as an adolescent sexual fantasy. But then strange things begin to happen and Deacon is forced to reconsider. Could UFOs be symbols projected from the collective unconscious? Are they messages from the biomatrix? Does the mind have the ability to project objects and people that are physically real...yet somehow illusory? A wonderfully fascinating, mind-bending voyage." Author Linda Kass in Conversation at the East Hampton Library

Adults Drawing on biographical and historical sources, BESSIE reimagines the early life of Bess Myerson—the talented daughter of poor Russian Jewish immigrants from the Bronx—who, in the bigoted milieu of 1945, remarkably rises to become Miss America, the first--and to date only--Jewish woman to do so. This tender fictional portrait unveils a bold young woman living at a precarious moment in our cultural history as she searches for love and acceptance, eager to make her mark on the world.
