THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PRESENTS Marilyn Monroe: Celluloid Dream
The Museum of Modern Art announces a film series, Marilyn Monroe: Celluloid Dream, from March 12 – March 25, 2026.
This year marks the centenary of Norma Jeane Mortenson's birth. Yet in a perfect encapsulation of the Hollywood dream—and nightmare—that identity was overtaken by a character that is part reality (Norma Jeane's) and part fiction (Hollywood's): Marilyn Monroe. Like many other orphans, the woman who would become Marilyn Monroe saw in cinema a way to compensate for a traumatic youth without a family and a home. After working as a pin-up model, she made the transition to film, and gradually built an audience by always making a major impact in minor roles. Then, in 1952, she helped bring sex into American homes when Playboy published nude photos of her in its inaugural edition. Monroe admitted to having made them without shame, revealing a sexual candor that infused the unforgettable persona she introduced in the torrid Niagara (1953), her first film with top billing. Though she is frequently describ…

Grand Homes & Gardens: Stratford Hall
Blending history, architecture, and horticulture, this year’s Grand Homes & Gardens speaker series, Freedom at Home: Telling the Full Story of America’s Founding Homes and Gardens, showcases the estates of signers of the Declaration of Independence, telling the stories of the people who lived and worked in these grand spaces.
On March 12, Morven welcomes Dr. Gordon Blaine Steffey (Director of Research and the Jessie Ball duPont Memorial Library) for an illustrated presentation on Stratford Hall, the boyhood home of Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee. It was also the birthplace of Robert E. Lee, General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States during the Civil War. Four generations of the Lee family lived at Stratford, as did hundreds of enslaved Africans and African Americans who lived and labored at the plantation. Today, the site stands as a model of Georgian architecture, standing almost entirely as it did in the 1740s.

SPAM Goes to War and Comes Home Again
Nearly 13 tins of SPAM are eaten each second around the world. Born in Minnesota in 1937, SPAM has become a global food associated with many different cuisines, especially Korean foodways. The Korean War brought American soldiers with diverse foods to the Korean Peninsula, notably SPAM. US soldiers handed it out, bartered it for information, or sold it to the hungry. Such acts functioned as a form of “gastrodiplomacy,” often enabling positive and lasting impressions of the Americans and their food on the Peninsula long after hostilities had ceased. But what started out as a temporary, wartime necessity has become an ingrained element of Korean culinary tradition, impacting cookery habits for generations. The practice of eating SPAM still resonates today with those in South Korea, as well as those in the Korean diaspora. Join Kelly A. Spring (SPAM: A Global History) and Irene Yoo (Soju Party: How to Drink (and Eat!) Like a Korean) as they discuss the remarkable history of SPAM in Korea and the longevity of the…

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PRESENTS A View from the Vaults: The 1980s
The Museum of Modern Art announces a film series, A View from the Vaults: The 1980s, from March 13 – April 7, 2026.
Founded in 1935 as the Film Library, MoMA's Department of Film was established in recognition of the moving image as a crucial art form fundamental to modern times. From its inception, the Film Library provided the resources and critical framework for the study of film as a living art—one in which style, aesthetics, innovation, and history could be explored. What began with the acquisition of Hollywood studio films quickly expanded to encompass experimental cinema, the avant-garde, documentaries, films from around the world, and more.
This installment of the A View from the Vaults series focuses on works in MoMA's collection from the 1980s, a dynamic decade that preceded the rapid development—and later dominance—of digital filmmaking. This period was marked by a flourishing of blockbuster films, a buzzing theater-going culture, and new modes of discovery and engagement, not least the widesprea…

One Day: Alicia Jean McIntosh
This March, the walls of The Loft will come alive with the work of American abstract expressionist Alicia Jean McIntosh, offering a rare encounter with her layered world of texture, movement, and quiet strength.
Alicia Jean McIntosh is an American abstract expressionist artist working through texture, movement, and emotional depth. McIntosh creates paintings shaped by memory, resilience, and lived experience. Each work holds what cannot be spoken, built slowly through layered surfaces and quiet force.
Using acrylics and mixed media, McIntosh allows intuition to guide the process. Paint is added, disrupted, and reshaped, revealing tension, erosion, and renewal. Control and release exist together, mirroring the way growth follows damage.
McIntosh brings discipline and clarity to her practice through her background as a U.S. Army veteran, former gallery owner, and trained communicator. Structure supports the work without limiting it. Imperfection remains visible, honored as part of truth rather than something…

Mannes Opera presents The Silent Serenade (Die Stumme Serenade)
Mannes Opera presents the U.S. Premiere of The Silent Serenade (Die Stumme Serenade), by composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold and librettist Victor Clement.
Written in the late 1940s after Korngold’s celebrated Hollywood tenure, and based on a short story by Austrian writer Raoul Auernheimer, The Silent Serenade is a romantic farce brimming with mistaken identities, amorous intrigue, and glittering melodies. The operetta-revue hybrid was intended for Broadway, at a time when works like Regina, The Consul, and Trouble in Tahiti found success on theatrical stages. But after a troubled production history—including an aborted Shubert Brothers run—the piece slipped into obscurity. Now, in a long-overdue U.S. premiere presented in English, Mannes Opera brings back this sophisticated confection, illuminating a facet of Korngold’s genius rarely seen by American audiences.

Speakeasy, Die Softly: Immersive Murder Mystery Dinner Theater at Carmine's
The Dinner Theater Show Everyone’s Dying To Attend… At Carmine’s in Times Square!
Speakeasy, Die Softly is the most elaborate comedic immersive murder mystery ever performed by The Murder Mystery Company. During this killer show, guests will enjoy a three-course, family-style Italian feast in the newly renovated Sinatra Room at the legendary Carmine’s in Times Square.
The year is 1927, a time of flappers, mobsters, bootlegging, and countless seedy speakeasies. Come on into Lou Zar’s and shimmy to the live music of the club’s famous songstress, Lucy Morals, and her accompanist, Keys Yacar, or, if you prefer, play some casino games and win big money you can blow on “soda pop.” Unfortunately, the fun can’t last all night– the feds have been sniffing around! We need your help to flip the speakeasy into a “legitimate Italian restaurant” before the police raid the place. However, even amidst all these games, dames, and dons, someone had murder on their mind! You and your table team must help the detective solve…

The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band- Ledbetter Heights 30th Anniversary Tour
On Friday, March 13, The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band brings his Ledbetter Heights 30th Anniversary Tour to Paramount Hudson Valley. Thirty years ago, a Fender Strat–wielding teenager from Shreveport, Louisiana rocketed the blues back into the mainstream with the Platinum-selling Ledbetter Heights—a fiery, hook-smart, and reverent burst of guitar prowess that cut through the grunge era and reintroduced blues to a new generation. That breakout vaulted Shepherd from small clubs to Top-10 charts and earned him industry acclaim, a passionate fanbase, and a spot in Guitar World’s rankings just behind B.B. King and Eric Clapton. Now a master rather than a prodigy, Shepherd has returned to where it all began with a faithful, full-band re-recording of his landmark debut in honor of its 30th anniversary. On this national tour stop, the band will perform the entire 12-song album live, then follow with a second set spanning highlights from Shepherd’s three-decade career. “This is the album that put me on the map, and I sti…

Spyro Gyra
In 2024, Jay Beckenstein and Spyro Gyra began observing their 50th anniversary, a milestone few bands in any genre achieve. What started in Buffalo, NY as a simple diversion — a group of friends gathering on their night off for a “Tuesday Night – Jazz Jam” that cost twenty-five cents at the door — evolved into one of the most successful jazz fusion groups in the world. Over the course of five decades, Spyro Gyra has released more than 30 albums, earning gold and platinum along the way, while performing over 10,000 concerts on six continents. From those early days of carefree jam sessions to recording career-defining albums like Morning Dance and Catching the Sun, the band’s journey has been marked by both continuity and evolution. Beckenstein’s saxophone remains the unmistakable voice of the group, while changing rhythm sections and new musical influences have kept the sound fresh and current. Through technology shifts, lineup changes, and a constantly changing musical landscape, Spyro Gyra has maintained the…

Dedication is a solo theatrical and musical performance by New York pianist Roger Peltzman. Through drama, humor, projected images, and a musical range that spans blues to Chopin, Peltzman recounts his family’s history of fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe. The work centers on the “relationship” between Peltzman and an uncle he never knew — a gifted young pianist murdered at Auschwitz at age 21 — and reflects on second-generation survivor trauma and the role of music in navigating inherited loss.

Museum of Jewish Heritage presents Tevye’s Daughters, a new opera giving voice gritty women’s stories omitted from Fiddler on the Roof
On Thursday, March 19, the Museum will present a concert performance of Tevye’s Daughters, a new opera by composer Alex Weiser and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, commissioned by American Lyric Theater as part of its InsightALT series. The opera draws on Sholem Aleichem’s largely untold story of Shprintse — youngest daughter of Tevye the Dairyman, another Aleichem character who was the protagonist of Fiddler on the Roof. The story moves between a Ukrainian shtetl in 1907 and a summer cabin in the Catskills in 1964, as Shprintse’s descendants confront a long-suppressed family past. The work elevates women’s perspectives that have frequently been erased.

The Bat
“The Bat” by Krisztina Tóth is a darkly humorous contemporary Hungarian drama in which the disappearance of a child’s rubber bat from a kindergarten changing room triggers escalating suspicion, resentment, and outright hatred among adults in the classroom’s orbit. What begins as a seemingly trivial conflict spirals into tragicomic nightmare, as Tóth gestures at the underlying fractures in contemporary Hungarian society. New Stage Theatre Company (NSTC), located at 36 West 106th Street (basement), will present the piece's US premiere March 20 to April 4. The piece is translated by Szilvi Naray-Davey, directed by Ildiko Nemeth and performed by Adam Boncz and Sarah Lemp.
The story feels uncannily attuned to today's culture of division. As mutual distrust and resentment are laid bare, what unfolds is a tale of family and community life that is humorous, heartbreaking and familiar. By turns hilarious and unsettling, the play transforms an everyday setting into a microcosm of social discord revealing how quickly c…

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART PRESENTS Frida and Diego: The Last Dream
The Museum of Modern Art announces an art exhibition, Frida and Diego: The Last Dream, from March 21 – September 12, 2026.
Frida and Diego: The Last Dream celebrates Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera—two of Mexico's most beloved icons of 20th-century art—in a first-of-its-kind collaboration with the Metropolitan Opera. Presented in conjunction with the Met's new production of El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego (May 14–June 5, 2026), composed by Gabriela Lena Frank with a libretto by Nilo Cruz, the exhibition features artworks by Kahlo and Rivera in an elaborate installation designed by Jon Bausor, the set and co-costume designer of the opera. For both the opera and exhibition, Bausor weaves visual references from the artists' lives and artworks into his theatrical designs.
Key participants in a movement to redefine Mexican culture and identity after the revolution of 1910–20—Rivera through monumental murals and Kahlo through intimate self-portraits—the artists were romantically involved from 1928 until Kahlo's dea…

On Second Thought
This informal performance of complete dances will focus on the inevitable changes that happen as time passes, and how, for example, professional dancers dance differently as they move past their student years; how a solo or a group piece can be transformed by adding another dancer; or how a choreographer can respond to an old, quietly eloquent solo with a new jazzier, more provocative dance. Before each dance, Beth Soll will provide information about her choreographic process. At the end of the show, audience comments and questions will be welcomed.

Museum of Jewish Heritage presents “All in the Telling – a somewhat true story” with Saul Rubinek
On Wednesday, March 25, the Museum will host a staged reading of All in the Telling, written and performed by Saul Rubinek. The novel weaves together a true story of miraculous survival, a murder mystery, an operatic family drama, and undying romance. As Rubinek tells it, he fell in love with a non-Jewish woman, upsetting his Holocaust survivor parents. Desperate to repair his relationship with his parents, he told them he was writing a book about their love and survival. As he chronicled their lives, Rubinek uncovered extraordinary loyalty and bravery alongside secrets and deceptions buried in his family’s past, confronting the complexities of memory, truth, and storytelling.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both enchanting and touching.
The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

Grand Homes & Gardens: Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden
Blending history, architecture, and horticulture, this year’s Grand Homes & Gardens speaker series, Freedom at Home: Telling the Full Story of America’s Founding Homes and Gardens, showcases the estates of signers of the Declaration of Independence, telling the stories of the people who lived and worked in these grand spaces.
On March 26, Morven welcomes Peter Hatch (Gardener, Historian, and Emeritus Director of Gardens and Grounds for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation) for an illustrated presentation on Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden. The Monticello vegetable garden, a 1,000-foot-long terrace, grew new and unusual edible plants from around the world. Jefferson was a strong believer in a vegetable diet, and this revolutionary garden inspired a revolutionary cuisine in the kitchen at Monticello. Much of the work constructing, cultivating, and maintaining the gardens would have fallen to enslaved labor. Today, these gardens have been mostly restored to the early nineteenth century.
