“Peering into the Birthplaces of Planets” (A Free, Virtual Lecture)

Registration is required for this free, virtual lecture. Go to: https://bit.ly/PlanetaryTalk Astronomers have discovered thousands of planets outside of the Solar System. Many of these planets have properties that are drastically different from the eight in our Solar System. To understand the diversity of planetary properties and ultimately answer the question of how our own planet came to be, we must study the conditions under which planets form. Planets are born in protoplanetary disks, which consist of gas, dust, and ice orbiting very young stars. Recent observations of disks with telescopes such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array, the Very Large Telescope, and the James Webb Space Telescope are playing a critical role in unveiling the chemistry and physics of planet formation. Dr. Huang will discuss their key discoveries as well as some of the mysteries of planet formation that remain open. Dr. Jane Huang is an assistant professor of astronomy at Columbia University. Veterans Tribute Grows at the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch

WARETOWN – A year ago, a small photo array in the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch honored several former military members in honor of Veterans Day. Today, thanks to community members who have added to it, the display fills an entire wall and is still growing. Branch Manager Jennifer Lennon placed the first photos before Veterans Day 2023, a gesture for family members and friends who “wore the colors.” It caught the attention of patrons, visitors and neighbors who asked if they might contribute. “We still have people coming in and taking time to look over the pictures,” Jennifer said. “They ask if everyone is local. Some ask to be added. It makes me happy every time it happens.” There now are 55 images of local wartime and peacetime veterans, five times the size of the original display, complete with names, branches, and theaters of operation. “I grew up in a military family. The Intersection of Food and Trans Identity: A Conversation

How can we use food to refocus the global narrative around the Trans community away from that of hostility and towards one of care and celebration? What role does food play in building and sustaining the Trans community? How can food-making spaces nurture the social bonds that empower Trans people to create, dream, and rejoice? Moderated by Dubbs Weinblatt, this conversation brings together Telly Justice, Gabrielle Inès Souza, Luna Vela, and Skylar Mosca as they discuss what it means to move through the world as Trans people and how food is pivotal to their careers, from the joy of cooking as self-expression to the necessity of food access for survival. Tickets include access to Flavor: The World to Your Brain from 6 to 7 PM, bites from Dacha 46, cocktails from Anytime Spritz, and N/A cocktails from Aplós.
