João César Monteiro: Symphonies of a Libertine

The Museum of Modern Art announces a film series, João César Monteiro: Symphonies of a Libertine, from October 16-November 6, 2025. João César Monteiro (1939–2003) is often mentioned alongside Manoel de Oliveira as one of the most influential Portuguese directors of the 20th century. Yet while Oliveira's fascination with religious and theatrical representations of life made him an obsessive formalist, Monteiro was inspired by the Marquis de Sade and symbolist and surrealist literary movements to bring an anarchistic, anticlerical spirit to his films. A true libertine, Monteiro subverted trends and definitions in a body of work that, in the vein of Erich von Stroheim, focuses on the perverted mysteries of pleasure, decay, and the poetic translation of the sublime into art—whether film, music, or literature—while striking out at a corrupt sociopolitical status quo he identified with fascism in its many guises. These tendencies are given form in his alter-ego, João de Deus (named after a Portuguese patron sain… Category: Art / Photography / Crafts. Thursday, October 23, 2025, 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM. COLLECTIONS

GR gallery is pleased to present COLLECTIONS, the first solo exhibition in New York by Nehemiah Cisneros and his debut with the gallery. The exhibition showcases an ambitious ensemble of twelve new paintings on canvas, the outcome of a year-long immersion in their creation. With this body of work, Cisneros reflects on the nature of collecting—approaching it as an act of obsession, liberation, and refuge—and transforms it into a visual document that takes the shape of his own recontextualized Wunderkammer. Much like a contemporary Renaissance cabinet of curiosities, his works assemble and reveal a constellation of objects and icons, each charged with intimate meaning. Together, they compose a symbolic and behavioral portrait of a generation of modern connoisseurs, mapping the desires, values, and contradictions that define his relationship with today’s culture. Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion

Bernard Shaw's PYGMALION! Before My Fair Lady, there was Pygmalion—the razor-sharp, wildly entertaining original that redefined romantic comedy for the modern age. Set in the vibrant streets and drawing rooms of pre-WWI London, this timeless classic follows Eliza Doolittle, a spirited flower seller with big dreams, and Professor Henry Higgins, a brilliant but socially unevolved linguist who wagers he can pass her off as a duchess by teaching her to behave and to speak “properly.” But what begins as a game of manners and accents soon escalates into something far deeper—a battle of wills, a clash of class, and a search for identity that still resonates today. Don’t miss this limited run of Shaw’s most beloved play—smart, stylish, and full of heart. Category: Theater / Concerts. Contact Name: Emily McGill. Contact Phone: 212-355-7823.

These tendencies are given form in his alter-ego, João de Deus (named after a Portuguese patron sain… Category: Art / Photography / Crafts. Friday, October 24, 2025, 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM.

During this killer show, guests will enjoy a three-course, family-style Italian feast in the newly renovated Sinatra Room at the legendary Carmine’s in Times Square. Spirits at Carmine’s

“Spirits” is an immersive theatrical experience, written by Scott Cramton, set in 1927 at Lou Zar’s Speakeasy. The tragic story focuses on Olive Thomas, an immigrant who recently moved to New York City with hopes of making a name for herself. Hopes aside, she cannot reach fame without a little help from beyond the veil. She makes a dreadful deal and soon becomes a lounge singer at Lou’s. Her popularity quickly rises, and apparitions haunt her as her deal begins to bend. Masked audience members decide the fate of Olive Thomas as reapers prepare for her to break her promise. This two-hour experience will include complementary desserts and a cash bar for guests to enjoy. An untrustworthy narrator, Mr. Scratch will guide you through this twisted story and, by the end, you’ll be left wondering: are you truly alive, or are you a spirit? Helen Frankenthaler: A Grand Sweep

The Museum of Modern Art announces an installation, Helen Frankenthaler: A Grand Sweep, from October 25, 2025 - February 8, 2026. Describing her painting Chairman of the Board (1971), Helen Frankenthaler said that the work was about a grand sweep and that she had the basic idea in her head, knowing how the lines would dance in and feeling sure of herself. This statement speaks to the artist's ambition to paint on a monumental scale, and her confidence in doing so, two decades after her breakthrough moment in the Abstract Expressionist scene of midcentury New York. At the same time, the phrase—a grand sweep—also speaks to the expansive arc of her long career and its continuous innovations. The paintings in this exhibition offer a succinct exploration of Frankenthaler's ongoing experiments. In the 1950s, she developed a signature technique of pouring thinned oil paint on raw canvas and allowing the medium to soak into the support. By the early 1960s, she shifted to acrylic paint, enabling more defined edges a… Category: Museum / Exhibitions. Saturday, October 25, 2025 – Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Saturday, October 25, 2025, 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM.

It’s a one-hour immersive horror experience where you choose your path through wards, tunnels, and locked rooms. Every visitor sees a different piece of the story. Every shadow leaves its mark. Everyone was left to leave. What was kept was not allowed to die – only to dream. Category: Misc. Contact Name: Chrissy Gervais. Contact Phone: 347-291-7330.

Veterans Tribute Grows at the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch

WARETOWN – A year ago, a small photo array in the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch honored several former military members in honor of Veterans Day. Today, thanks to community members who have added to it, the display fills an entire wall and is still growing. Branch Manager Jennifer Lennon placed the first photos before Veterans Day 2023, a gesture for family members and friends who “wore the colors.” It caught the attention of patrons, visitors and neighbors who asked if they might contribute. “We still have people coming in and taking time to look over the pictures,” Jennifer said. “They ask if everyone is local. Some ask to be added. It makes me happy every time it happens.” There now are 55 images of local wartime and peacetime veterans, five times the size of the original display, complete with names, branches, and theaters of operation. “I grew up in a military family.

Monday, October 27, 2025, 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM. Come on into Lou Zar’s and shimmy to the live music of the club’s famous songstress, Lucy Morals, and her accompanist, Keys Yacar, or, if you prefer, play some casino games and win big money you can blow on “soda pop.” Unfortunately, the fun can’t last all night– the feds have been sniffing around!

These tendencies are given form in his alter-ego, João de Deus (named after a Portuguese patron sain… Category: Art / Photography / Crafts. Tuesday, October 28, 2025, 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM.
