Toms River Branch The Library Equal Access Program (LEAP) provides free training in the use of assistive technology on the iPad or iPhone. These classes are available to those adults 55 years of age or older with changes in their vision. iPad experience is a prerequisite for this course. In this intermediate class, you will build on your basic iPad skills to learn more about the accessibility features and assistive apps available to you. iPads will be provided in class, but okay to bring your own iPad or iPhone. Portraits of Summer 2023

Pt. Pleasant Beach Branch Gregory Andrus, local author, speaker, photographer, and founder of the Portraits of the Jersey Shore, joins us to talk about his personal journey and his discovery of how every person’s story matters and brings us together. Having overcome alcoholism and homelessness as a young man, he has found a deep faith and a ruling conviction that every single person has dignity and worth. Gregory has made it his life’s mission to share inspiration, hope and love to every person that comes across his books, his speaking engagements, and social media. Remembering the Holocaust: A Conversation with Maud Dahme

Brick Branch Join us as Maud Dahme, a Holocaust survivor, shares her story and experiences as a hidden child during World War II. Born in 1936 in Amersfoort, the Netherlands, Maud Dahme was six years old when she and her sister were separated from their parents and hidden by the Dutch resistance, a secret “underground” network of people who opposed Hitler’s regime. After the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945, Dahme and her sister were reunited with their parents, and the family immigrated to the United States when Dahme was fourteen years old. Andrew Carnegie: From Steel to the Building of Libraries

Long Beach Island Branch Andrew Carnegie amassed an enormous fortune in the steel industry and then became a major philanthropist. During the late 19th century, when steel was first used as railroad track, Carnegie perfected low-cost steel production. The Carnegie Steelworks, in Homestead, PA, employed men producing steel under primitive industrial working conditions. This program will feature the 1892 strike at Homestead which pitted the Pinkerton Detective Agency against the steelworkers ending with 10 deaths. After Carnegie sold his steel company to J.P. Morgan he gave all his money away by building over 2,500 libraries. Many still exist today. Sponsored by the Friends of the Island Library.
