The Wilma Theater presents: The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington by James Ijames
Behold the feverish Martha Washington, our first First Lady, on her deathbed, surrounded by the enslaved people poised to claim freedom the moment she dies (true story). In her final hours, she is confronted by a hallucinatory “trial” where she must face her past and the legacy of slavery in the United States. The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington by Pulitzer Prize-winning James Ijames (Fat Ham) is a spicy satire that explores issues of race, power, and historical memory. The Wilma’s HotHouse Acting Company brings this pertinent and dynamic production to life with deep sincerity, high-stakes clowning, and striking imagery under the direction of HotHouse Member Brett Ashley Robinson.

ArtistNConversation: Albert Chong with Gustavo Garcia and Justine Ditto
Please join us on March 18 at 6PM for an inspiring conversation with artist and photographer Albert Chong, moderated by Gustavo Garcia
Albert Chong is a contemporary artist dealing with personal mysticism, spirituality, race and identity, and numerous other topics through his work. His main bodies of photographic work have been in the genres of still life in black and white and color that represent and reanimate Chong’s family history. Through his work we learn about Aunt Winnie, Justice, Miss Peggy, and gain an insight into one family’s story from Jamaica’s past. These works use analog and digital layering to create the sometimes dense but usually simple arrangements that infer, relate, connect and signify the complex nature of the struggles of the displaced peoples of the Asian and African diaspora. Chong’s other works in the photographic medium include his Throne for the Ancestors Series and his portraits of artist friends and of Jamaicans in Various parts of Jamaica.
Albert Chong was born in Kingston, Jam…

Philly GRIT: The Dangers of Tobacco
Theatre Exile presents The Dangers of Tobacco by Justin Jain and Anton Chekhov as a part of Philly Grit, a series of shows by Philadelphia performers who step outside the boundaries of traditional theater to shine a bright light on our world. This Chekhovian one-act gets a wild, comedic overhaul, as a dusty old professor strays from his lecture and finds himself looking back at the ever-present “what could have been.” In this ultimate mash-up, Justin Jain also looks back as they deconstruct this classic text and explode the story into the familial tale of a first-generation queer Filipino-American. Justin explores the fine line between performer, character, and clown as they playfully entrance the audience with these intertwining stories.

Other women discussed include authors, garden designers, conservationists, dig-in-dirt gardeners, and influential women from Chester County who participated in the horticultural movement during that time.
Jenny Rose Carey is a renowned gardener, educator, historian, and author. She is the former senior director at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Meadowbrook Farm in Jenkintown, and she previously worked at Temple University for over a decade, first as an adjunct professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture…

In live performance, Ólafsson is “a hypnotic presence at the keyboard; listeners might be held back in thrilling anticipation one moment or tumbled headlong into the maelstrom” (The Guardian).
On his newest album, Opus 109(Beethoven | Bach | Schubert), Ólafsson places Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 30 in thoughtful dialogue with music by Bach and Schubert. The result is intimate, searching, and boldly reimagined, an interpretation in which Ólafsson “opens up a transcendent vista on to a brave new world” (The Guardian). Now he brings this compelling program to the stage, offering audiences the chance to experience its cla…

Marin Leads Rachmaninoff and Schumann
Composed during a tumultuous period in his life, the great Romantic composer Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony is a musical journey, as he called it, “of many joys and sorrows.” Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop leads this beautiful masterwork, on a program with Rachmaninoff’s blazing Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini*, performed by a pianist of “enchanting, sensitive lyricism” (The Jerusalem Post).
Nineteeth-century violinist Niccolò Paganini was a rock star of his era. Phenomenally gifted, his performance pyrotechnics were legendary and his compositions too technically challenging for most to perform. Who better then to convert Paganini’s work for piano than the phenomenally gifted pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninoff? Like Paganini, Rachmaninoff dazzled audiences with his performances, and his compositions have challenged the most gifted performers. This Rachmaninoff favorite shines in the hands of Haochen Zhang, a pianist with a “rare gift for painting scenes in music, creating visions and telling…

Brew N' History Tour
Explore the graves of some icons while pairing their legacies with Yards Brewery. See how 18th-century drink culture fueled a new Republic.
Step back in time—and raise a glass—to the stories that built a nation.
Philadelphia isn’t just the cradle of American Liberty; it was a brewing capital of the New World. From the first commercial vineyards to the smoky taverns where revolution was whispered, alcohol has flowed through the veins of the city since the 1680s.

The Experience
As we navigate the final resting places of 4,000 Philadelphians, we will pair the legacies of the city’s most influential figures with samples of signature brews from Yards Brewing Company. You’ll learn how the drinks of the 18th century defined the health, social status, and mil…

Mozart and the Bachs
Mozart and the Bachs explores the vibrant musical threads connecting Mozart to three members of the Bach family. From the elegance of J.C. Bach, whom the young Mozart met in London, to the expressive freedom of C.P.E. Jazz Series: Emmet Cohen Miles and Coltrane at 100
When thinking of jazz and the most mainstream touchstones of this wholly American art form, the first two names that come to mind are Miles Davis and John Coltrane. In 2026, we celebrate the 100th birthdays of these cultural icons!

Audiences will experience the virtuosity, style, and elegance of five of the top young players interpreting some of the most recognizable, acclaimed American music ever written.
Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer, Emmet Cohen is one of his generation's most pivotal figures in music and the related arts. Leader of the Emmet Cohen Trio and creator of the Masters Legacy Series, Cohen is an internationally acclaimed jaz…

Exploring “boundaries both physical and emotional” (Philadelphia Inquirer), this magnetic ballet is set to a score of hits by female artists including Joanna Newsom, Martha Wainwright, and Cyndi Lauper.
Show Me was co-commissioned with the Vail Dance Festival in 2015. Hailed as “winning and witty” by The New York Times and set to the music of string quartet Brooklyn Rider, this work shows off the physical prowess and idiosyncratic personalities of BalletX’s dancers, as only Matthew Neena…

Spring Series 2026
Experience an unforgettable trio of works by BalletX co-founder, Matthew Neenan!
Matthew Neenan is celebrated for his groundbreaking choreography, musicality, and creativity.

Infinite Body on Tour (Philadelphia)
The return of Claire Chase and the tsunami of energy that comes with her, as we revisit Rita Dove’s hard-edged, raw “cricket poems” in Tania León’s endlessly inventive Singsong, which dances its way through a journey of Black singers from pre-slavery to today. Wang Lu’s At Which Point boldly explores the fragility and emptiness of grief found in poet Forrest Gander’s world of those “left behind.” Finally, Ayanna Woods’ Infinite Body, a co-commission of Carnegie Hall and The Crossing, explores how capitalism influences our relationship to our bodies, peering through the lenses of the natural world, burnout culture, and embodiment, to observe and unsettle the notion of our separateness.
Resilience. Endurance. Unexpected Joy.

Spring Series 2026
Experience an unforgettable trio of works by BalletX co-founder, Matthew Neenan!
Matthew Neenan is celebrated for his groundbreaking choreography, musicality, and creativity. In his 28th world premiere for the company, he joins forces with award-winning composer and musician Scott Ordway and designer Christopher Ash to explore how simple gestures gain strength in unity – a joyful reminder of what we can achieve together.
Broke Apart, a landmark in BalletX’s history, premiered to sold-out crowds at the 2006 Fringe Festival.

Join us at the historic Christ Church Burial Ground for a walking tour that uncovers the "spirited" side of some iconic figures. We’re pulling on the threads of Founding Fathers, doctors, writers, and artists who used beer, cider, and wine to fuel a new society.
The Experience
As we navigate the final resting places of 4,000 Philadelphians, we will pair the legacies of the city’s most influential figures with samples of signature brews from Yards Brewing Company. You’ll learn how the drinks of the 18th century defined the health, social status, and mil…

Living All Alone
A soul-stirring musical about the life of the icon, legendary singer Phyllis Hyman. This musical production will feed and satisfy even the most critical theatergoer.
The story depicts her personal life longing for love, acceptance and explores her battles with industry pressures, addiction, and mental health issues that resonates with many people on a personal level and builds upon the current mental health conversations today. Despite Phyllis’ private pain and public success, this beautiful yet tortured soul life was filled with moments of artistic triumph that eventually marred by tragic circumstances led to her untimely death. “Living All Alone” is both a celebration and a lament musical to a voice that could shatter silence, and a life that continues to echo in all.

Nimesh Patel: With All Due Disrespect
Nimesh Patel is a comedian and Emmy-nominated writer who has risen through the ranks to some of comedy’s biggest stages due to his unassailable joke writing, prolific output, and innovative marketing. Named as one of Variety’s prestigious “10 Comics to Watch” of 2023 and hailed by Vulture as “a Comedian You Should and Will Know,” Nimesh has charted a path from sold out comedy clubs to major theaters.
His most recent self-produced special, Lucky Lefty, about his experience having testicular cancer "for three business days" is his third in the past two years. Lucky Left along with his first two self-produced specials, Thank You China and Jokes to Get You Through Quarantine, have amassed millions of views on YouTube alone and show no sign of slowing down.
His first writing job came after Chris Rock saw him perform standup and hired him directly to write for The Academy Awards in 2016 and tour with him. Since then, Patel has written for Saturday Night Live with Vanity Fair hailing him as the shows “most intri…

Beethoven and Marsalis
Composer, trumpeter, and standard-bearer for the art form, jazz legend Wynton Marsalis has earned scores of awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Music. In 1983, he became the first and only artist ever to win both a Classical and Jazz GRAMMY in the same year; in 1984 he did it again. Joined by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra performs Marsalis’s newest work on a program with Beethoven’s lively, melodic Seventh Symphony.
An America 250 Event
As Philadelphia takes part in the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, we are proud to honor the voices of those who helped shape our country but were not fully heard in 1776. The world premiere of Marsalis’s Symphony No. 5 (“Liberty”), co-commissioned by the Orchestra, reflects our commitment to amplifying historically marginalized voices and inviting great American musicians to our stages.

All Your Friends
An indie dance party for the ones who still romanticize a scratched iPod, American Spirits, and a blurry night soundtracked by bloghouse and post-punk revival. All Your Friends is at House of Independents on March 28, 2026, bringing the sweat, synths, and nostalgia of the early 2010’s house party.
This is your basement-floor flashback to tight jeans, smudged eyeliner, and nights that felt like a house show turned afterparty.
