These artists take the practice of observing their subjects seriously, capturing every nuance with unflinching precision. From traditional realism, super-realism, photorealism, and hyperrealism, these artists tell it how it is.

The upcoming show in honor of the 100th anniversary of Black History month will include appearances from Marquise Richards (Keepin' It a Bean), Monique Bonney (Well Crafted), Eric Cole (Hung Up Podcast), and more!

Loudon Wainwright III & Chris Smither: WXPN Welcomes
They first met in the late 1960s amidst the folk revival, and since then, Loudon Wainwright III and Chris Smither have each made an indelible mark on the contemporary singer-songwriter scene. With influences from folk, country, jazz and rock, Wainwright’s music is rich, candid and witty, as he “wrings more human truth out of his contradiction than any other songwriter of his generation.” Smither’s folk and blues sound is layered over the ever-present backbeat of his tapping feet, taking “the blues in a direction entirely his own: stoic existential ruminations sung in a pained, weathered moan and set to quietly virtuosic guitar.” Don’t miss this Penn Live Arts debut of two music icons. Devan Shimoyama: SHIFT
Glassboro, NJ (January 6, 2026) — Philadelphia native artist Devan Shimoyama will present new work in his regional debut, SHIFT at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. This solo exhibition runs January 26 to March 21. Opening reception Wednesday February 4th 2026 at 5-7pm.
Devan Shimoyama is a visual artist who works primarily in painting and self-portraiture, with works inspired as much by classical mythology as by the culture of his youth. Through his depictions of the queer Black male form, Shimoyama investigates the politics of queer culture while navigating his own personal narratives. Referencing the dramatic sensibilities of painters such as Caravaggio and Goya, he layers his surfaces with jewels, black glitter, rhinestones, and sequins to evoke both the beauty and alienation of the Black queer body.
A Central High School alum, who grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and Germantown, Shimoyama graduated from Penn State University in 2011 with a BFA in Drawing/Painting. He received his MFA from Yale Un…

Blind Summit Theatre: The Sex Lives of Puppets
A “hilarious” hit at Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Guardian), The Sex Lives of Puppets makes its Philadelphia premiere with a cheeky, honest and slightly shocking dive under the sheets. What is Greatness?
In his recently published book, Zev Eleff explores the phenomenon of greatness and what Americans really mean when they talk about greatness. Eleff’s book reveals truths about the shifts in public opinion and teases out the cultural and ideological factors that shape a person’s thoughts on the topic. For example, an argument for Abraham Lincoln or Franklin D. Roosevelt over George Washington as America's greatest statesman says as much about the speaker as it does about the legacies of former US presidents. Individual Americans value different traits for various reasons. In another case, the poet, Emily Dickinson, received little public recognition during her lifetime. Now she is viewed as a genius. What Americans value in an individual and who we think should be honored has changed over time.
Zev Eleff is president and professor of American Jewish history at Gratz College. He is the author or editor of fifteenth books, the most recent of which is The Greatest of All Time: A History of an American Obsession…

Tyshawn Sorey: Members, Don't Git Weary
Tyshawn Sorey, MacArthur Fellow, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and professor of music at Penn, pays tribute to jazz pioneer Max Roach and his 1968 album, Members, Don't Git Weary, a recording with context embedded in one of the most pivotal cultural periods of the 20th century. For this Philadelphia premiere, Sorey’s new arrangements wink at the originals, but also capture the current moment in our cyclical history. Sorey, on drums, will be joined by Adam O'Farrill (trumpet), Mark Shim (tenor saxophone), Lex Korten (piano) and Tyrone Allen (bass) for this heartfelt snapshot of Roach’s music.

Quintessence Theatre presents Shakespeare’s “Rare Accidents”
“Succession” was not the first time we obsessed over who dad was going to choose to take over. His father killed a king and usurped a kingdom, but the prodigal Prince Hal spends his days consorting with
commoners and playing pranks with his philandering old knight, Sir John Falstaff, rather than studying statecraft and preparing to be the next King of England. A civil war is threatened when Hotspur and his father, the Earl of Northumberland, claim their right to the throne, forcing Hal and Falstaff from the tavern to the battlefield. In this struggle for the divine right to wear the crown, Shakespeare’s epic family drama challenges what makes a good son, a good friend, and a good leader.
Group, senior, military, industry, and rush discounts are available based on performance and availability.

Delaware County Symphony Presents A Celebration of Black History with Sound and Sight
In honor of Black History Month, the Chamber Series of Delaware County Symphony is presenting a combination of theatrical performance with classical string quartet music on Sunday, February 15 at 3:00 PM. Historical Interpreter and Educator, Dr. Daisy Nelson-Century will bring Harriet Tubman to life with accompanying music by pioneering African American composer, Florence Price.
The program unfolds in five theatrical acts; each paired with one movement from Price’s Five Folksongs in Counterpoint for String Quartet. Through this unique blend of storytelling and music, audiences will experience the extraordinary courage of Harriet Tubman- born into slavery in Maryland, later a Union spy during the Civil War, and the heroic conductor of the Underground Railroad who helped free more than seventy enslaved people.
Florence Price (1887–1953) was an American composer, pianist, organist, and educator whose work has gained renewed recognition in recent years. Educated at the New England Conservatory of Music and based…

Fierce Desires: Variation, Conflict, and Pleasure in the History of America
In the United States today, we have government decrees that there are only two sexes, debates about “trad wives” and polyamory, and frequent references to the nation’s “puritan” past. But in her latest book—and in this talk—Professor Rebecca L. Davis argues that seventeenth-century Puritans are a weak precedent for how the history of sexuality has unfolded in the United States. Into the 1800s, the United States was far more welcoming of gender nonconformity and same-sex/queer desires than we might presume. Instead, a significant shift occurred in the late nineteenth century, when anti-obscenity and anti-immigration legislation vastly expanded the federal government’s investment in shaping sexual morality. The history that unfolds is far less about prudish puritans than shifting sexual values. Our contemporary conflicts over sex and gender highlight the power of this surprising history.

Mnozil Brass: Strau$$
Mnozil Brass: Strau$$
Saturday, February 28, 2026
7:30 PM | Pfleeger Concert Hall
For over thirty years, the seven brass masters of Mnozil Brass have effortlessly waltzed between genres, gliding from Johann Strauss to Frank Sinatra, Shostakovich to Prince, Schubert to Queen. They embrace the grandeur of classical music and the irresistible charm of pop with equal joy, never afraid to mix the sublime with the playful. Now, Mnozil Brass ties it all together in their latest stage sensation: Strau$$. The “King of the Waltz” was admired by Brahms, Wagner, Verdi, Gershwin — and just about everyone else. A true pioneer, Strauss composed hit after hit, revolutionized music distribution, and became a mass phenomenon—not to mention a financial genius. With Strau$$, Mnozil Brass lays it all bare. Every flourish, every secret, every last twist and turn of the waltz’s golden age—until nothing remains but the naked truth.
