Veterans Tribute Grows at the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch
WARETOWN – A year ago, a small photo array in the Ocean County Library Waretown Branch honored several former military members in honor of Veterans Day. Today, thanks to community members who have added to it, the display fills an entire wall and is still growing.
Branch Manager Jennifer Lennon placed the first photos before Veterans Day 2023, a gesture for family members and friends who “wore the colors.” It caught the attention of patrons, visitors and neighbors who asked if they might contribute.
“We still have people coming in and taking time to look over the pictures,” Jennifer said. “They ask if everyone is local. Some ask to be added. It makes me happy every time it happens.”
There now are 55 images of local wartime and peacetime veterans, five times the size of the original display, complete with names, branches, and theaters of operation.
“I grew up in a military family. My dad, uncle and grandfather all served. So I have always had a very healthy respect for the military and its traditions,”…

Uncover Centuries of Art Controversy at the Ocean County Library Stafford Branch
STAFFORD TOWNSHIP – “What is art?” is a question as old as art itself. See how frictions that flared for daring 19th century artists still echo today during “Whistler, the Impressionists, and a Duct-Taped Banana” at the Ocean County Library Stafford Branch, 7 PM Wednesday, May 28.
Stockton University Professor Kate Ogden’s lively discussion highlights American expatriate James McNeill Whistler and his French Impressionist colleagues who led the avant-garde of their day. Whistler once sued a critic who disparaged his work. You will discover the lineage of this historic group of painters down to Maurizio Cattelan, the artist who in 2019 duct-taped a banana to a wall and declared it to be “art.”
The Pine Shores Art Association (PSAA), for whom Professor Ogden has conducted programs since 1992, presents the program. Enjoy light refreshments at 6:30 PM before the program and view works by PSAA members on the Branch’s main level.

TOMS RIVER – The Ocean County Library Toms River Branch is pleased to present “Washed on the Shore,” environmentally energized art by Alexander Taylor, in the McConnell Gallery throughout the months of May, June and July.

“After I collect ocean water, I boil it three times,” he said. “The remaining elements change the nature and tone of my acrylics and watercolors. Owners of my paintings actually have a little bit of the Atlantic Ocean on their walls…

Joiri Minaya: Venus Flytrap
BlackStar presents a site-specific, newly commissioned performance series and installation at Bartram’s Garden, from artist Joiri Minaya. Curated by writer and editor Dessane Lopez Cassell, the series will reflect on the intertwined legacies of freedom, extraction, and ecology in North America's oldest surviving botanical garden.

For this project, Minaya will craft a four-day performance series, custom textile elements, and a summer-long installation informed by the rich history of Bartram's Garden.
Established in 1728, Bartram's Garden is the oldest surviving botanical garden in North America, and consequently encapsulates the complexities of Philadelphia's history and our relationships with land. From its earliest uses as a hub for…

There now are 55 images of local wartime and peacetime veterans, five times the size of the original display, complete with names, branches, and theaters of operation.
“I grew up in a military family. My dad, uncle and grandfather all served. So I have always had a very healthy respect for the military and its traditions,”…

World Premiere of PRISM Quartet’s GUITAR HEROES feat. Leyla McCalla, Rez Abbasi and Steven Mackey
For more than 40 years, the all-sax PRISM Quartet has redefined the artistic boundaries of its medium. None of us are sure quite what to expect, and that’s why this project is so…
