Objects Up Close Virtual Series

A Painted Tinware Writing Box Virtual Program Explore the manufacture, context, and conservation treatment of an 1800s painted tinware writing box in the museum collection with Luca Denegre, Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation fellow. Writing boxes like this one were used in the West before the invention of the fountain pen in the early 20th century. This small red box includes an inkwell and sand shaker, and likely once held other writing tools like wax, quills, or a dip pen. The lid and sides of this everyday object are painted and decorated with gold designs done with bronze powders. The conservation of the box included repairing a broken hinge to restore the functionality of the lid and aimed to restore legibility of the engaging design and stabilize flaking paint while honoring the evidence of everyday use by its previous owner. With color, pattern, and a retro-graphic design, Lisa Marie reimagines scenes from Ben's travels with a surreal and whimsical aesthetic. December First Friday

This First Friday, stop into the Museum for Art in Wood and experience its current exhibitions, A Usable Past: Reflections on a Nation and Its Inheritance, which brings together sculpture by twelve artists who reckon with America’s layered histories. From family lineages and ancestral myths to rooted or shifting values, the ideas that drive these works probe how the nation’s past continues to shape these artists and their experience of the present. Drawing from the metaphorical power inherent in the material of wood, these artists translate inheritance into form, giving “shape and substance to national identity.”In addition to A Usable Past, opening in the Museum’s Library is the collection-themed exhibition, American Graffiti: Painting, Dyeing, and Surface Design in Wood, which follows the rebellious, experimental, and often quirky spirit of artists who dare to obscure the unadulterated beauty of wood grain. Julbord Dinner

Start your Christmas celebrations by indulging in a Swedish holiday dinner prepared by Jeffrey A. Miller Hospitality Group. Julbord, or “Christmas Table,” is a Scandinavian feast where a wide variety of foods are served buffet style, or, as Swedes say, smörgåsbord. A traditional Julbord takes place on December 24th and is one of the highlights of the Christmas celebration for Swedes. Some menu items on a traditional Julbord are remnants of Viking spreads from mid-winter solstice celebrations, while other originate from the turn of the twentieth century in Sweden. A modern favorite dish, meatballs, was only added in the 1970s! Regardless of the food served, the most important and consistent element of Julbord is gathering with loved ones and sharing a meal during this special holiday season!
