The Wilma presents Poor Judge – A Pig Iron Production

Pig Iron Theatre Company's acclaimed dance-theater cabaret, ‘Poor Judge,’ is back at the Wilma! This original work, inspired by Aimee Mann's alt-rock music and conceived by Philadelphia's own Dito van Reigersberg, is a unique live music mixtape. Performed by a local supergroup of actor-musicians, ‘Poor Judge’ blends spy story, lost loves, and Hollywood auditions. Through vignettes and songs, it reveals both the alluring facade and the dark underbelly of Los Angeles and the American success story. Prepare for a night of lonely California highways, movie theater breakups, and hauntingly reimagined Aimee Mann classics. Don't miss this captivating return engagement! Category: Theater / Concerts. Historical Society of Pennsylvania Hosts Changing Faces of Independence Exhibit Opening

Join us for the opening of our exhibit Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1800s. How has the makeup of who is an American changed since the American Revolution? How have the people in that changing face of America continuously reinvigorated and reasserted the founding ideals of the country? By examining the documents left by our ancestors in the time leading up to America’s 100th birthday, this display poses those questions to their descendants. By the time of the nation’s Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1876, enormous waves of German and Irish immigrants arrived in Pennsylvania, and significant migrations of free and enslaved people of African descent moved from the South, using the Underground Railroad and following Emancipation during and after the Civil War. Curated in partnership with the German Society of Pennsylvania and Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, this exhibit aims to connect Americans to their ancestors through the records of their lives, highlighti… Category: Museum / Exhibitions. Curtis Symphony Orchestra: Osmo Conducts Bartók

Embark on a musical odyssey with renowned Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä. The evening begins with Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), a swirling, celestial work inspired by planetary motion and the roiling drone of the medieval stringed instrument, the hurdy-gurdy. Henry Dorn’s powerful Transitions follows, a deeply personal tone poem reflecting on loss, transformation, and resilience. The program features the world premiere of a new concerto for woodwinds and orchestra by David Serkin Ludwig, performed by Grammy-winning quintet and Curtis faculty Imani Winds. The concert concludes with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a virtuosic showcase that transforms each section of the ensemble into dazzling soloists. Charting a bold musical journey across five movements—this masterwork blends folk-inspired melodies, modernist harmonies, and brilliant orchestration, making it one of the most beloved orchestral pieces of the 20th century. Ruckus with Davóne Tines: What is Your Hand in This?

Intrepid early music ensemble Ruckus and boundary-pushing singer Davóne Tines deliver the bite of America’s earliest revolutionary music, time-traveling through four centuries of reimagined songs, hymns and dance tunes. “The world’s only period instrument rock band,” (San Francisco Chronicle) Ruckus is known for its visceral approach, fusing a Baroque band’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music. A Penn Live Arts debut with bass-baritone Tines, a "singer of immense power and fervor," (Los Angeles Times) this concert ponders the fragile American experiment, asking how we stand up against wrongdoing while still coming together as a country. Category: Theater / Concerts. Contact Phone: 215.898.3900. Cost: $35+. Thursday, January 29, 2026, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM. Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral, 19 South 38th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Loudon Wainwright III & Chris Smither: WXPN Welcomes

They first met in the late 1960s amidst the folk revival, and since then, Loudon Wainwright III and Chris Smither have each made an indelible mark on the contemporary singer-songwriter scene. With influences from folk, country, jazz and rock, Wainwright’s music is rich, candid and witty, as he “wrings more human truth out of his contradiction than any other songwriter of his generation.” Smither’s folk and blues sound is layered over the ever-present backbeat of his tapping feet, taking “the blues in a direction entirely his own: stoic existential ruminations sung in a pained, weathered moan and set to quietly virtuosic guitar.” Don’t miss this Penn Live Arts debut of two music icons. Devan Shimoyama: SHIFT

Glassboro, NJ (January 6, 2026) — Philadelphia native artist Devan Shimoyama will present new work in his regional debut, SHIFT at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. This solo exhibition runs January 26 to March 21. Opening reception Wednesday February 4th 2026 at 5-7pm. Devan Shimoyama is a visual artist who works primarily in painting and self-portraiture, with works inspired as much by classical mythology as by the culture of his youth. Through his depictions of the queer Black male form, Shimoyama investigates the politics of queer culture while navigating his own personal narratives. Referencing the dramatic sensibilities of painters such as Caravaggio and Goya, he layers his surfaces with jewels, black glitter, rhinestones, and sequins to evoke both the beauty and alienation of the Black queer body. A Central High School alum, who grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and Germantown, Shimoyama graduated from Penn State University in 2011 with a BFA in Drawing/Painting. He received his MFA from Yale Un… Category: Art / Photography / Crafts. Contact Name: Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. Cost: FREE. Wednesday, February 4, 2026, 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. What is Greatness?

In his recently published book, Zev Eleff explores the phenomenon of greatness and what Americans really mean when they talk about greatness. Eleff’s book reveals truths about the shifts in public opinion and teases out the cultural and ideological factors that shape a person’s thoughts on the topic. For example, an argument for Abraham Lincoln or Franklin D. Roosevelt over George Washington as America's greatest statesman says as much about the speaker as it does about the legacies of former US presidents. Individual Americans value different traits for various reasons. In another case, the poet, Emily Dickinson, received little public recognition during her lifetime. Now she is viewed as a genius. What Americans value in an individual and who we think should be honored has changed over time. Zev Eleff is president and professor of American Jewish history at Gratz College. He is the author or editor of fifteenth books, the most recent of which is The Greatest of All Time: A History of an American Obsession… Category: School / Education. Reunions.
