Through the lens of commedia dell’arte, Sacco and Vanzetti: A Tragedia dell ’Arte, will highlight the absurdity of the case while being a comic foil for the tragic events of Sacco and Vanzetti’s lives.

Fierce Desires: Variation, Conflict, and Pleasure in the History of America with Rebecca L. Davis
In the United States today, we have government decrees that there are only two sexes, debates about “trad wives” and polyamory, and frequent references to the nation’s “puritan” past. But in her latest book—and in this talk—Professor Rebecca L. Davis argues that 17th century Puritans are a weak precedent for how the history of sexuality has unfolded in the United States.

The history that unfolds is far less about prudish Puritans than shifting sexual values. Our contemporary conflicts over sex and gender highlight the power of this surprising history.
Rebecca L. Davis is the Miller Family Early Career Professor of History and an associate professor of women and gender studies at the Un…

Objects Up Close Virtual Series
Folk Binding: The Joseph Stidham Diary
A ropemaker and wire weaver from Wilmington, Delaware, Joseph H. Stidham (1788–1870) was also an active diarist who bound his own notebooks using whatever materials he had at hand. From offcuts of leather pants to scraps of cloth and recycled paper, Stidham made utilitarian and charming covers for his diaries. The pages within are often held together with colored thread, stick pins, and wax. This presentation by Luke K. Kelly, Fellow, Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation, will examine the conservation treatment of one of Stidham’s journals from the collection and discuss the importance of preserving idiosyncratic “folk bindings” and their value as artifacts. Registration required. Free.

Philadelphia Orchestra Presents: Lang Lang and Yannick
There are artists who seize the public imagination, and perhaps none has done so as spectacularly as Lang Lang. Whether he’s performing for billions, as at the 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremony, or for a small group of school children, his artistry and passion is on full display. In this one-night-only engagement, the celebrated pianist joins Yannick and the Orchestra in Beethoven’s lyrical Piano Concerto No. 4. Tickets are flying for this concert; order now to avoid missing out.
It’s the stuff of classic movies: an established star falls ill and standing in the wings is a young prodigy. That’s how Lang Lang burst upon the international music scene, when at age 17 he was called upon to fill in for an ailing André Watts ... and the rest is history. That was 25 years, millions of records, and hundreds of concerts ago, including performances for United States presidents, Pope Francis, and Queen Elizabeth II. Join the royal ranks of Lang Lang fans in this must-hear performance!

The Contrast
Written in 1787, "The Contrast" was America’s first comedy and an indisputable hit in its time!
The sentimental Maria is unhappily engaged to Dimple, a dandy whose recent European tour has given him expensive tastes and a tendency to flirt with her friends. They all seem on track for a life of misery until Colonel Manly and his salt-of-the-earth waiter Jonathan arrive in town to disrupt this disreputable plot. Fresh from the American Revolution, this 18th-century gem is a comedy of manners that helped define what American manners were to become.

Philadelphia Beekeeping Before 1719
Keeping bees (apiculture) was new to North America in the 1600s, brought to the north-east by English and German colonists to produce honey and wax. The earliest record of apiculture in Pennsylvania explains how German settlers in Germantown kept honeybees, cultivated honey and wax, and celebrated bees with poems and stories.

Philadelphia Orchestra Presents: Mozart’s Requiem
A masterwork from a prodigiously gifted composer who shaped the music of his lifetime and centuries thereafter. In his Requiem, Mozart summoned all the fire and brimstone hell could hold, making ominously real the awful majesty of death and the miracle of redemption.
Named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her gifts to music, English conductor Jane Glover is a musicologist, a renowned Mozart specialist who brings a deep understanding of his music to her performances. Her palpable joy in Mozart’s music is abundantly apparent: “each work engaged the ear with stylish interpretation as well as with the profound humanity that colors Mozart’s music ... getting directly into the heart of each moment of this miraculous music. Following lengthy ovations by the audience, the orchestra awarded Glover her own bow” (Chicago Classical Review).
Bold and brilliant, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 is a cyclone of dramatic energy that leaves listeners on the edge of their seats. (April 10–12 performances only…

Screening: "You Don't Have to Go Home, But..." by Aidan Un
"You Don’t Have to Go Home, But..." by Aidan Un (USA, 2024, 78 min) is an ode to dancing bodies, a grimy love letter to Philly, a story about what to do when the DJ has played the last song, the club’s lights come on, and you gotta go . . . somewhere. Following dancers at different stages of their artistic lives, with legendary party Second Sundae as backdrop, this film examines the possibility of spiritual fulfillment in a socioeconomic configuration that ultimately doesn’t value the practices that make us free.
To be preceded by "Hip Hop Life" (USA, 2025, 9 min) by students of Scribe's Documentary for History Project for Youth.
Aidan Un is a French-Korean filmmaker based in Philadelphia for the past 17 years. When he’s not making films, you can catch him at a Capoeira roda or drumming with Korean Percussion Ensemble 우리얼 (URIOL).

Lena Dunham: The Famesick Tour
To celebrate the release of her first book in over a decade, Lena Dunham returns to the stage for a night of fearless storytelling and no holds barred conversation. A candid, funny, and bracingly honest reflection on illness, fame, sex, and everything in between, Famesick marks a bold return from the creator of Girls and Too Much. So throw on your pajamas and join us for a night that brings together all the best parts of a slumber party (and not the thing where you call your parents crying because you want to go home). We'll get nostalgic for the 2010s, frank about anxiety and ambition and go deep about what it actually means to author your own story. We can't wait to see you there to celebrate Famesick.
Lena Dunham is the ultimate multi-hyphenate—an award-winning actor, writer, director, producer and philanthropist. Her 2014 memoir, Not That Kind of Girl, was a #1 New York Times best seller. The Liberty Bell Brawl IV
Haymakers for Hope returns to Philadelphia with the Liberty Bell Brawl IV, an unforgettable night of boxing, community, and purpose. This powerful event brings together everyday individuals who step into the ring after months of intense training, not as professional fighters, but as passionate advocates determined to raise money for a cause that affects nearly every family: cancer.
Each participant commits to raising significant funds for life saving cancer research while preparing to compete in a sanctioned amateur boxing match in front of a packed crowd. Research at Winterthur Speaker Series
Plantation Goods: A Material History of American Slavery
The industrializing North and the agricultural South—that’s how we have been taught to think about the United States in the early nineteenth century. But in doing so, we overlook the economic ties that held the nation together before the Civil War. We miss slavery’s long reach into small New England communities, just as we fail to see the role of Northern manufacturing in shaping the terrain of human bondage in the South. Using plantation goods—the shirts, hats, hoes, shovels, shoes, axes, and whips made in the North for use in the South—historian Seth Rockman locates the biggest stories in American history in the everyday objects that stitched together the lives and livelihoods of Americans—white and Black, male and female, enslaved and free—across an expanding nation. Rockman is the George L. Littlefield Professor of American History, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Brown University.

Paul Taylor Dance Company
Paul Taylor Dance Company is “one of the most exciting, innovative, and delightful dance companies in the entire world.” (The New York Times) This audience-favorite returns with Speaking in Tongues, a dramatic work which had its world premiere on our stage in 1988. Set against a melodic yet haunting score, the piece examines the undercurrent of fanaticism and hypocrisy in religion. A stark contrast, the program will also feature the definitive Taylor work Esplanade, “a classic of American dance” (The New Yorker) that is at once playful, somber and romantic. Set to Bach, this masterwork celebrates its 50th anniversary with “stunning athleticism and irrepressible lyricism.” (CBS News).
