Night of Lights Family Programming: “Bizarre Bugs, Toads, and Butt-Breathers” with Doug Wechsler
Join children’s author and photographer Doug Wechsler for a free, fun, and educational morning at Hilltop Books. Wechsler will share excerpts from his book The Hidden Life of a Toad, Bizarre Bugs, and Blowholes, Book Gills, and Butt-Breathers: How Animals Get Their Oxygen and introduce young readers to wildlife found throughout the Wissahickon watershed and beyond, followed by a Q&A. The Chestnut Hill Conservancy is thrilled to present this new programming in collaboration with Hilltop Books and the Friends of the Chestnut Hill Library.

Lydia Darragh (1729-1789) was an Irish immigrant and Quaker who passed on information to the Continental Army that she gleaned from British officer meetings that took place in her home in Philadelphia. Darragh overheard General Howe's plan to attack Continental troops at Whitemarsh and was able to warn Washington's troops, allowing them time to prepare for the assault.
Carpenters' Hall hosts an evening that will begin with a performance of Philadelphia actor-director Megan Bellwoar's new play about Lydia Darragh. Bellwoar and Darragh biographer Robert Fanelli will then discuss Darragh's life and impact, followed by audience Q&A. Copies of Mr. Fanelli's book, Lydia's Tale: The Mystery of Lydia Darragh, Irish Quaker, Patriot Spy (2025), will be available for purchase.

Enjoy six projected video exhibitions in storefront windows from the 8600 through 8100 blocks of Germantown Avenue, showcasing more than 250 years of architecture, landscapes, and social history in Chestnut Hill, Northwest Philadelphia, and the lower Wissahickon watershed. Join artist Natasha Guy for a workshop that will use collage as a way to explore historical images.
2026 marks not just the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, but also the 200th anniversay of photography. In honor of these celebrations, participants will use historical images from the Print and Picture Collection to compose a collage and discuss what they've made as a group, exploring topics like how a city pictures itself, how photographs build collective memory, and the ways that history can be reopened through collage. The workshop will be held in the Art Department at Parkway Central Library and will run from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. No experience is needed and all materials will be provided.

Our multi-week courses meet once weekly for 2 hours of instruction and include unlimited open studio time for you to practice independently. Open studio sessions are booked in 1-3 hour sessions, and are offered daily. Join our one time class to learn the basics of handbuilding! All participants must be at least 6 years old, and accompanied by an adult if they are younger than 10 years old.
There is a $20.00 fee if you would like to keep what you throw. We will then finish and glaze your piece with a color of your choosing, and your piece will be ready for pick up 4 weeks after your class. We will notify you when your piece is finished, and we will hold your piece for 1 month after its completion before donating it. Please note that you must clean your wheel and area thoroughly at the end of class.
The kiln is an unpredictable place, and occasionally pieces may not successfully make it through both firings intact. If this happens, we will work with you to find a fair solution. No refunds for the class will be made for pieces that do not make it through both firings.

Percy Street's luminous "Electric Street" will host a First Friday block party this Friday, October 2nd, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on the 1300 block of S. Percy Street in Passyunk Square.
Hosted by Nice Things Handmade and Percy Street Project, this event will feature more than 40 vendors, including handmade goods, artwork, jewelry, and more. Live painting will also take place throughout the evening, with artists creating murals on a four-sided community mural wall presented by Rose Bear Arts.

Our one-time Grown Up & Me wheel classes are 90 minutes long. This is a great way for adults & children to learn the basics of pottery while also getting a feel for the wheel in a casual, relaxed environment.
Children must be at least 7 years old and no older than 17 years old to participate.Children younger than 7 can register for one of our Grown Up & Me (Handbuilding) classes. Registration must be made for both adult and child participants.
All tools are included for these classes.

Join our one time class to learn the basics of handbuilding! All participants must be at least 6 years old, and accompanied by an adult if they are younger than 10 years old.
There is a $20.00 fee if you would like to keep what you throw. We will then finish and glaze your piece with a color of your choosing, and your piece will be ready for pick up 4 weeks after your class. We will notify you when your piece is finished, and we will hold your piece for 1 month after its completion before donating it. Please note that you must clean your wheel and area thoroughly at the end of class.
The kiln is an unpredictable place, and occasionally pieces may not successfully make it through both firings intact. If this happens, we will work with you to find a fair solution. No refunds for the class will be made for pieces that do not make it through both firings.

Our multi-week children’s courses meet once a week for 90 minutes. During our courses, kids will get to learn the basics of throwing on the wheel in a safe, fun environment, while also getting to experience hand-building with clay. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child or teen to use their imagination and create something with their hands that they can eventually take home with them.
All clay, glazes, and firings are included in our children’s courses.

Paddle with friends and neighbors as the sun sets and experience Philadelphia from a whole new perspective. Each paddle is an opportunity to slow down, connect with nature, and learn about the rich and multifaceted history of the Delaware River and Philadelphia.
These beginner-friendly paddles cover approximately 2–3 miles. No swimming or kayaking experience is required! We’ll provide basic instruction, safety guidance, and all the necessary gear for your adventure.

Join our one time class to learn the basics of handbuilding! All participants must be at least 6 years old, and accompanied by an adult if they are younger than 10 years old.
There is a $20.00 fee if you would like to keep what you throw. We will then finish and glaze your piece with a color of your choosing, and your piece will be ready for pick up 4 weeks after your class. We will notify you when your piece is finished, and we will hold your piece for 1 month after its completion before donating it. Please note that you must clean your wheel and area thoroughly at the end of class.
The kiln is an unpredictable place, and occasionally pieces may not successfully make it through both firings intact. If this happens, we will work with you to find a fair solution. No refunds for the class will be made for pieces that do not make it through both firings.

Join our one time class to learn the basics of handbuilding! All participants must be at least 6 years old, and accompanied by an adult if they are younger than 10 years old.
There is a $20.00 fee if you would like to keep what you throw. We will then finish and glaze your piece with a color of your choosing, and your piece will be ready for pick up 4 weeks after your class. We will notify you when your piece is finished, and we will hold your piece for 1 month after its completion before donating it. Please note that you must clean your wheel and area thoroughly at the end of class.
The kiln is an unpredictable place, and occasionally pieces may not successfully make it through both firings intact. If this happens, we will work with you to find a fair solution. No refunds for the class will be made for pieces that do not make it through both firings.

Pasión y Arte brings an intimate, tablao-style flamenco performance to Philadelphia audiences — seasoned flamenco spectators and newcomers alike — experience the intensity and passion of flamenco performed up close.
‘Tablao’ refers to the casual venues where flamencos showcased their dancing until the art was institutionalized in theatrical performances. Flamenco emerged as a unique art form in the 15th century: Spanish Gypsies (Roma) danced flamenco privately in their rural homes, and the dance gradually migrated from the countryside to the cities in the south of Spain, where Gypsy artists performed on the streets and in plazas. By the 1840s, nightclubs called “Cafes del Cante” began to host flamenco Tablaos, giving flamencos the opportunity to demonstrate their extraordinary skills at improvising movement within the confines of strict musical and rhythmic structures. The cafes were the first enterprises to pay flamenco dancers, singers, and musicians, and commercial flamenco was born.

There is a $20.00 fee if you would like to keep what you throw. We will then finish and glaze your piece with a color of your choosing, and your piece will be ready for pick up 4 weeks after your class. We will notify you when your piece is finished, and we will hold your piece for 1 month after its completion before donating it. Please note that you must clean your wheel and area thoroughly at the end of class.
The kiln is an unpredictable place, and occasionally pieces may not successfully make it through both firings intact. If this happens, we will work with you to find a fair solution. No refunds for the class will be made for pieces that do not make it through both firings.

Our one-time Grown Up & Me wheel classes are 90 minutes long. This is a great way for adults & children to learn the basics of pottery while also getting a feel for the wheel in a casual, relaxed environment.
Children must be at least 7 years old and no older than 17 years old to participate.Children younger than 7 can register for one of our Grown Up & Me (Handbuilding) classes. Registration must be made for both adult and child participants.
All tools are included for these classes.

During our courses, kids will get to learn the basics of throwing on the wheel in a safe, fun environment, while also getting to experience hand-building with clay. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child or teen to use their imagination and create something with their hands that they can eventually take home with them.
All clay, glazes, and firings are included in our children’s courses.

One After Another: Series and Studies investigates the role of seriality in artistic practice across more than two centuries of American art. Drawn entirely from PAFA’s permanent collection, this exhibition brings together sketchbooks, preparatory studies, serial prints, and suites of drawings to reveal how artists develop ideas over time.
Whether used for training, observation, material experimentation, or formal investigation, repetition emerges as a fundamental creative strategy. By presenting works in series rather than as isolated objects, the exhibition invites visitors into the often hidden processes through which artists revise and transform their ideas.

Join our one time class to learn the basics of handbuilding! All participants must be at least 6 years old, and accompanied by an adult if they are younger than 10 years old.
There is a $20.00 fee if you would like to keep what you throw. We will then finish and glaze your piece with a color of your choosing, and your piece will be ready for pick up 4 weeks after your class. We will notify you when your piece is finished, and we will hold your piece for 1 month after its completion before donating it. Please note that you must clean your wheel and area thoroughly at the end of class.
The kiln is an unpredictable place, and occasionally pieces may not successfully make it through both firings intact. If this happens, we will work with you to find a fair solution. No refunds for the class will be made for pieces that do not make it through both firings.

Laurel Garber, the Park Family Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Michelle Donnelly, the Evelyn and Will Kaplan Curator of Twentieth Century Art and the John Rhoden Collection at PAFA, will discuss artists’ creative processes and experimental impulses across an array of printmaking techniques. The public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist, Keith Doms, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated.
Free and open to all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). No reservations are required. If you would like to help out with the dig, be sure to wear clothes that can get dirty and close-toed footwear. Bring work gloves if you have them; the site has a limited number of pairs to lend.
