Bespoke Matter
In Bespoke Matter, five artists challenge and expand these definitions; they explore traditional decorative arts through untraditional lenses. Their work poses a compelling question: What happens when an object is no longer functional? Including pieces representing furniture, wallpaper, decorative plates, porcelain vessels, and tapestry, Philadelphia-based artists Sophie Glenn, Leslie A. Grossman, Elizabeth Hamilton, Leah Kaplan, and Lisa Marie Patzer push the boundaries of craft, decorative arts, and traditional mediums. ( Must have an appointment to see the exhibition ).

Twelfth Night
Early music ensemble Twelfth Night reimagines operatic and instrumental masterpieces from the Baroque era. Directed by violinist Rachell Ellen Wong and harpsichordist David Belkovski, this dynamic ensemble of young stars is joined by soprano Nicoletta Berry for All'Italiana, a program exploring the tremendous influence of Italy’s musical greats. The youthful passion of Handel’s Armida abbandonata, Fasch and Telemann's chamber music and the unmatched virtuosity of concertos by Vivaldi and Durante bring to life the irresistible spell of the Italian Baroque. Don’t miss this “zesty, impeccable” group in its Philadelphia debut, as “such sensitivity and virtuosity in playing and singing doesn’t come along every day.” (New York Classical Review).

Hidden Virtuosas: Agata's Cantata
Tempesta di Mare | Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra
Hidden Virtuosas: Agata’s Cantata
Initially hidden from view by a screen—as the female performers at the Venetian orphanages were originally—a shift in light reveals the Tempesta di Mare orchestra, soloists and choir for modern-premiere performances of music composed for the Hidden Virtuosas by the most revered—and, like them, now mostly forgotten—male composers of the time. And we will perform the US premiere of an absolute rare work of stunning beauty: Agata della Pietà’s Ecce nunc.
Join us for this immersive journey to Venice with music composed by and for women at the Venetian Ospedali, the network of baroque-era orphanages that churned out top-tier female musicians on an unprecedented scale.

Reimagined Street Scenes
This installation features six illuminated art panels hand crafted by Lisa Marie Patzer Studios. The visuals are inspired from photographic 35mm slides shot by Ben Kabakow, a NYC postal worker and photographer. Kabakow travelled the world throughout the mid-1900's, capturing images of urban features such as buildings, cars, signs, and people. With color, pattern, and a retro-graphic design, Lisa Marie reimagines scenes from Ben's travels with a surreal and whimsical aesthetic.
Lisa Marie Patzer is a digital media artist, designer, and entrepreneur creating site-specific art that integrates light, pattern, historic imagery, and vibrant color. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to the field, she received the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2019. The following year, she was awarded the Sachs Arts and Innovation grant from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2022, Lisa Marie founded her company Lisa Marie Patzer Studio, where she works with private clients, interior designers, and individua…

University of the Arts: The Community and The Collection
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania is honored to announce the acquisition of the University of the Arts (UArts) institutional records, ensuring the preservation of nearly 150 years of creative, academic, and cultural history. The acquisition follows the closure of UArts in June 2024, a sudden and painful loss for Philadelphia’s cultural and educational landscape. The UArts archives include administrative records, such as meeting minutes and accreditation files, exhibition programs, slides, photographs, negatives, A/V materials (cassettes, VHS tapes, CDs, and digital files), architectural drawings, admissions, catalogs, annual reports, and other original creative and scholarly works by students, faculty, staff, visiting artists, and affiliated scholars.

La Otra Cara de la Historia

Historic Waynesborough Speaker Series: Paul Kahan
Philadelphia. The home of the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, and of course Ben Franklin, who once invented things and coined pithy sayings while stoking the flames of revolution.
But Philadelphia—the Athens of America, the City of Brotherly Love—is so much more than what you learned in school.
Join author and historian Paul Kahan at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Historic Waynesborough in Paoli to hear about the fabric of culture and history that has always been Philadelphia. Kahan will discuss not just the city’s roots—the Lenape people who once lived along the Delaware River and the European settlers who eventually arrived on its shores—but also the rise of industry, the political landscapes, and the diverse communities that were key in forging its future.
A fascinating portrait of a unique metropolis.

Reimagined Street Scenes
This installation features six illuminated art panels hand crafted by Lisa Marie Patzer Studios. The visuals are inspired from photographic 35mm slides shot by Ben Kabakow, a NYC postal worker and photographer.
