Bespoke Matter

In Bespoke Matter, five artists challenge and expand these definitions; they explore traditional decorative arts through untraditional lenses. Their work poses a compelling question: What happens when an object is no longer functional? Including pieces representing furniture, wallpaper, decorative plates, porcelain vessels, and tapestry, Philadelphia-based artists Sophie Glenn, Leslie A. Grossman, Elizabeth Hamilton, Leah Kaplan, and Lisa Marie Patzer push the boundaries of craft, decorative arts, and traditional mediums. ( Must have an appointment to see the exhibition ). Historical Society of Pennsylvania Hosts Changing Faces of Independence Exhibit Opening

Join us for the opening of our exhibit Changing Faces of Independence: Pennsylvania in the 1800s. How has the makeup of who is an American changed since the American Revolution? How have the people in that changing face of America continuously reinvigorated and reasserted the founding ideals of the country? By examining the documents left by our ancestors in the time leading up to America’s 100th birthday, this display poses those questions to their descendants. By the time of the nation’s Centennial Celebration in Philadelphia in 1876, enormous waves of German and Irish immigrants arrived in Pennsylvania, and significant migrations of free and enslaved people of African descent moved from the South, using the Underground Railroad and following Emancipation during and after the Civil War. Curated in partnership with the German Society of Pennsylvania and Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, this exhibit aims to connect Americans to their ancestors through the records of their lives, highlighti… Category: Museum / Exhibitions. The concert concludes with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a virtuosic showcase that transforms each section of the ensemble into dazzling soloists. "The Librarians" Film Screening and Discussion

Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Kim A. Snyder’s illuminating documentary offers a rattling look at coordinated efforts to ban books. The documentary introduces viewers to the everyday and increasingly vital heroes pushing back: the librarians who sound the alarm to both legislative and grassroots attempts to pull books from school and public libraries. This film is presented in partnership with Indie Lens Pop-Up, presented by ITVS, INDEPENDENT LENS. Join us after the film screening for a discussion featuring the following panelists: Kate Cummings, MLIS, MBA (1st VP/President-Elect of the Pennsylvania Library Association), Billie Walker (Head Librarian, Penn State Great Valley), and Dr. Cathi Fuhrman (Retired School Librarian, Co-Chair Intellectual Freedom Task Group/Read for Liberty PA, Pennsylvania School Librarians Association). Opening reception for Daniel Robert Horne’s “What Does It Mean To Be An American?”

Celebrate our newest exhibition during the opening reception for Daniel Robert Horne’s What Does It Mean To Be An American? All are welcome to meet the artist, check out the portraits, and enjoy live music by James Melton. About the exhibition: The exhibition What Does It Mean to Be An American? brings together Daniel Robert Horne’s portraits of explorers, thinkers, activists, and everyday people, reminding us that the American identity is not defined by a single figure or moment, but by a diverse mosaic of stories. From frontier pioneers and revolutionary leaders to abolitionists, cultural trailblazers, and modern citizens, each portrait reflects a different facet of the nation’s evolving character. Together, these works invite viewers to consider how courage, resilience, creativity, and hope shape the ongoing story of America, and how individuals from every walk of life contribute to its meaning. Ruckus with Davóne Tines: What is Your Hand in This?

Intrepid early music ensemble Ruckus and boundary-pushing singer Davóne Tines deliver the bite of America’s earliest revolutionary music, time-traveling through four centuries of reimagined songs, hymns and dance tunes. “The world’s only period instrument rock band,” (San Francisco Chronicle) Ruckus is known for its visceral approach, fusing a Baroque band’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music. A Penn Live Arts debut with bass-baritone Tines, a "singer of immense power and fervor," (Los Angeles Times) this concert ponders the fragile American experiment, asking how we stand up against wrongdoing while still coming together as a country. After its debut in 2025, VARIETY PACK is back and leveling up. Loudon Wainwright III & Chris Smither: WXPN Welcomes

They first met in the late 1960s amidst the folk revival, and since then, Loudon Wainwright III and Chris Smither have each made an indelible mark on the contemporary singer-songwriter scene. With influences from folk, country, jazz and rock, Wainwright’s music is rich, candid and witty, as he “wrings more human truth out of his contradiction than any other songwriter of his generation.” Smither’s folk and blues sound is layered over the ever-present backbeat of his tapping feet, taking “the blues in a direction entirely his own: stoic existential ruminations sung in a pained, weathered moan and set to quietly virtuosic guitar.” Don’t miss this Penn Live Arts debut of two music icons. Devan Shimoyama: SHIFT

Glassboro, NJ (January 6, 2026) — Philadelphia native artist Devan Shimoyama will present new work in his regional debut, SHIFT at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. This solo exhibition runs January 26 to March 21. Opening reception Wednesday February 4th 2026 at 5-7pm. Devan Shimoyama is a visual artist who works primarily in painting and self-portraiture, with works inspired as much by classical mythology as by the culture of his youth. Through his depictions of the queer Black male form, Shimoyama investigates the politics of queer culture while navigating his own personal narratives. Referencing the dramatic sensibilities of painters such as Caravaggio and Goya, he layers his surfaces with jewels, black glitter, rhinestones, and sequins to evoke both the beauty and alienation of the Black queer body. A Central High School alum, who grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and Germantown, Shimoyama graduated from Penn State University in 2011 with a BFA in Drawing/Painting. Blind Summit Theatre: The Sex Lives of Puppets

A “hilarious” hit at Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Guardian), The Sex Lives of Puppets makes its Philadelphia premiere with a cheeky, honest and slightly shocking dive under the sheets. Inspired by real-life responses from the UK’s National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles, Blind Summit Theatre’s impish cast of puppeteers and their delightfully frank senior citizen puppets explore the tangled world of sex, intimacy and modern human desire. “Mark Down and Ben Keaton's taut script couples ribaldry with moments of tenderness,” (The New York Times) delivering “a refreshingly positive message about shedding inhibitions and finding joy.” (The Stage) Content Advisory: This is one puppet show you definitely can’t bring the kids to – The Sex Lives of Puppets contains strong language with depictions of sexual activity and is recommended for audiences over age 18. What is Greatness?

In his recently published book, Zev Eleff explores the phenomenon of greatness and what Americans really mean when they talk about greatness. Eleff’s book reveals truths about the shifts in public opinion and teases out the cultural and ideological factors that shape a person’s thoughts on the topic. For example, an argument for Abraham Lincoln or Franklin D. Roosevelt over George Washington as America's greatest statesman says as much about the speaker as it does about the legacies of former US presidents. Individual Americans value different traits for various reasons. In another case, the poet, Emily Dickinson, received little public recognition during her lifetime. Now she is viewed as a genius.

Quintessence Theatre presents Shakespeare’s “Rare Accidents”

“Succession” was not the first time we obsessed over who dad was going to choose to take over. His father killed a king and usurped a kingdom, but the prodigal Prince Hal spends his days consorting with commoners and playing pranks with his philandering old knight, Sir John Falstaff, rather than studying statecraft and preparing to be the next King of England. A civil war is threatened when Hotspur and his father, the Earl of Northumberland, claim their right to the throne, forcing Hal and Falstaff from the tavern to the battlefield. In this struggle for the divine right to wear the crown, Shakespeare’s epic family drama challenges what makes a good son, a good friend, and a good leader.
