The Pearl S. Buck House National Historic Landmark Museum is proud to present a new art exhibit opening January 13. “Visions of East and West: Traditional Chinese Painting by Shutian Cao” will feature 50+ pieces of art by noted artist and art educator Shutian Cao, depicting scenes from both China and the Delaware Valley, two places that Pearl S. Buck loved and called home. Like Pearl Buck, Shutian Cao also calls China and Bucks County home, and draws on that for inspiration. From cityscapes of Shanghai, Philadelphia, and New York to the rural Chinese mountains and rolling fields and gardens of Lancaster and Bucks County to historic buildings and famous places throughout the Delaware Valley, visitors will get to enjoy these paintings and ink drawings on display throughout the Pearl S. Buck House. This exhibit will be open through April 13. Tour times vary. Tours are offered Tuesday-Sunday; no tours on Mondays.

City Winery Philadelphia presents Vopli Vidopliassova "40th Anniversary Tour" With support from Leonid Foundation live on Tuesday, January 13th at 7:30pm.
As part of their 40th Anniversary World Tour, Ukraine’s legendary band Vopli Vidopliassova returns to Philadelphia on January 13 for a powerful evening of music, freedom, and celebration.
For four decades, VV has stood at the forefront of Ukrainian rock, fusing punk, folk, and global rhythms into a genre-defying sound that resonates across generations. After a sold-out North American tour in 2025, the band continues its celebration with this winter edition of the tour, featuring a festive Malanka theme and community collaborations.
This show will also contribute to VV’s ongoing charity mission. In 2025, the band raised over $50,000 for Misto Dobra and other Ukrainian nonprofits. For the 2026 tour, they aim to double that impact through live auctions, donations, and local partnerships — including support from the Leonid Foundation.

In the late 18th century Philadelphia saw a large influx of musicians from London and other areas of the British Isles – many coming at the personal invitation of the theater impresario and composer, Alexander Reingale. Musicians who performed with Joseph Haydn and Johann Peter Salomon, who played at the Drury Lane and Saddler’s Wells Theatres, church musicians, and musicians of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens converged on the capital of the new nation, bringing skill, grit and an entrepreneurial spirit that changed the face of Philadelphia’s musical life. The Saturday Visiter Awards are presented by Poe Baltimore to recognize a new generation of artists continuing Edgar Allan Poe’s legacy in the arts and literature around the world. The prizes celebrate media, art, performance and writing that adapts or is inspired by Poe’s life and works.
Though he was not wealthy in his lifetime, Edgar Allan Poe was the first American writer to support himself entirely by his pen. The Saturday Visiter was the name—and spelling—of a local periodical that held a contest for poetry and short stories. Join Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG) for Everything But the Kitchen Sink Mosaic Workshop, a two-hour workshop led by the PMG education team exploring techniques used by PMG creator Isaiah Zagar. Known for his unique and, some say, liberating method for creating mosaics, participants will examine Zagar murals, prepare and create materials to make their own mosaic.
Guests will learn how to cut glass, break tile, mix grout, and lay out a small 9″ x 9″ mosaic to take home. Embark on a musical odyssey with renowned Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä. The evening begins with Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), a swirling, celestial work inspired by planetary motion and the roiling drone of the medieval stringed instrument, the hurdy-gurdy. Henry Dorn’s powerful Transitions follows, a deeply personal tone poem reflecting on loss, transformation, and resilience.
The program features the world premiere of a new concerto for woodwinds and orchestra by David Serkin Ludwig, performed by Grammy-winning quintet and Curtis faculty Imani Winds. The concert concludes with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a virtuosic showcase that transforms each section of the ensemble into dazzling soloists. Charting a bold musical journey across five movements—this masterwork blends folk-inspired melodies, modernist harmonies, and brilliant orchestration, making it one of the most beloved orchestral pieces of the 20th century.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens presents a three-week panel mosaic workshop, where participants will be led by PMG’s Preservation Team in creating their own 24” x 16” mosaic panel using the Zagar Method of mosaicking. Discover this freeing and versatile art form with staff who have trained with PMG creator Isaiah Zagar and are responsible for maintaining the mosaics at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. Participants should plan to take their mosaic home with them on the last day of class on February 12. Framing is available for a discounted rate at New Image Art & Framing, 601 S. 9th Street. Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate in this workshop. All supplies are included.
Week 1 (January 29): Create a “blob” with colorful grout and glaze tiles to use in your mosaic
Week 2 (February 5): Learn to break tile and cut mirror, plan your design, and place tiles
Week 3 (February 12): Grout your mosaic and take your masterpiece home.

Feeling a chill already this winter? The perfect way to warm up is with a hot bowl of Swedish pea soup at the American Swedish Historical Museum! ASHM continues our tradition of the annual Pea Soup Dinner hosted by The Pea Soup Committee on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 5:00 pm.
Ärtsoppa, or Swedish yellow pea soup, is the traditional Thursday night supper in Sweden during the winter that dates back to the medieval period. In more modern times, pea soup is served regularly during the winter in restaurants and homes and is a common Thursday school lunch in Sweden, often accompanied by pancakes. ASHM’s Pea Soup Dinner is served with sharp Swedish cheese, mustard, and bread, with Swedish pancakes and coffee for dessert. There will also be a cash bar. Glassboro, NJ (January 6, 2026) — Philadelphia native artist Devan Shimoyama will present new work in his regional debut, SHIFT at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum. This solo exhibition runs January 26 to March 21. Opening reception Wednesday February 4th 2026 at 5-7pm.
Devan Shimoyama is a visual artist who works primarily in painting and self-portraiture, with works inspired as much by classical mythology as by the culture of his youth. Through his depictions of the queer Black male form, Shimoyama investigates the politics of queer culture while navigating his own personal narratives. Referencing the dramatic sensibilities of painters such as Caravaggio and Goya, he layers his surfaces with jewels, black glitter, rhinestones, and sequins to evoke both the beauty and alienation of the Black queer body.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens presents a three-week panel mosaic workshop, where participants will be led by PMG’s Preservation Team in creating their own 24” x 16” mosaic panel using the Zagar Method of mosaicking. Discover this freeing and versatile art form with staff who have trained with PMG creator Isaiah Zagar and are responsible for maintaining the mosaics at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. Participants should plan to take their mosaic home with them on the last day of class on February 12. Framing is available for a discounted rate at New Image Art & Framing, 601 S. 9th Street. Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate in this workshop. All supplies are included.
Week 1 (January 29): Create a “blob” with colorful grout and glaze tiles to use in your mosaic
Week 2 (February 5): Learn to break tile and cut mirror, plan your design, and place tiles

In his recently published book, Zev Eleff explores the phenomenon of greatness and what Americans really mean when they talk about greatness. Eleff’s book reveals truths about the shifts in public opinion and teases out the cultural and ideological factors that shape a person’s thoughts on the topic. For example, an argument for Abraham Lincoln or Franklin D. Roosevelt over George Washington as America's greatest statesman says as much about the speaker as it does about the legacies of former US presidents. Individual Americans value different traits for various reasons. In another case, the poet, Emily Dickinson, received little public recognition during her lifetime. Now she is viewed as a genius. What Americans value in an individual and who we think should be honored has changed over time.

Kids Intro to Ceramics: Pinch Pots

Join us at Utility Works Creative Community, and get hands-on with clay in this fun, kid-focused introduction to ceramics! In this single-session class, young artists will learn the basics of handbuilding with clay using a simple and classic technique called pinch pots.
Pinch pots are an easy, approachable way to explore clay. Kids will start by shaping a basic form and, as their confidence grows, can choose to turn it into something more imaginative, like a bowl, cup, animal, or small sculpture.
No prior experience needed. The class is open to kids ages 6+. Parents for kids 6-13 are asked to stay; parents are welcome to play along, though will not be given individual guidance.
This class encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and hands-on exploration in a supportive and playful environment.

The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Heim Center for Cultural and Civic Engagement is proud to introduce Voices of the Future: A Civic Dialogue Roundtable Series, an initiative designed to amplify youth voices and foster civic engagement among young Philadelphians.
Targeted mostly to high school juniors and seniors, this program creates a dedicated space for youth perspectives within the broader civic conversation. Participants will explore issues that impact their lives and communities, developing confidence and skills to express their ideas effectively.
Through a series of moderated roundtable discussions, students will examine the complexities of democracy and civic life in today's world. Each session will feature a professional moderator and a student co-moderator, ensuring an inclusive environment where participants can share and listen respectfully.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens presents a three-week panel mosaic workshop, where participants will be led by PMG’s Preservation Team in creating their own 24” x 16” mosaic panel using the Zagar Method of mosaicking. Discover this freeing and versatile art form with staff who have trained with PMG creator Isaiah Zagar and are responsible for maintaining the mosaics at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. Participants should plan to take their mosaic home with them on the last day of class on February 12. Framing is available for a discounted rate at New Image Art & Framing, 601 S. 9th Street. Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate in this workshop. All supplies are included.
Week 1 (January 29): Create a “blob” with colorful grout and glaze tiles to use in your mosaic
Week 2 (February 5): Learn to break tile and cut mirror, plan your design, and place tiles
Week 3 (February 12): Grout your mosaic and take your masterpiece home.
