Private Finance, Public Power: A Free Talk on the History of Bank Supervision in America
Banks may be private, profit-driven institutions—but the public has always shaped the risks they take and paid the price when they fail.
Private Finance, Public Power explores this uneasy partnership over two centuries of American history, from the wildcat banks of the early republic to the rise of federal deposit insurance and modern financial regulation.
Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown and historian Sean Vanatta bring this story to life with colorful characters and surprising moments: rogues looting failed banks, con artists posing as government examiners, bribes paid in oyster dinners, and reformers struggling to build order out of chaos. Through repeated crises and improvisation, today’s complex banking oversight system emerged—flawed, strained, but largely functional.
In this talk, Wharton professor Peter Conti-Brown explores why this history matters for understanding the challenges facing U.S. banking today.

Sarah Isgur joins for a conversation on her new book, Last Branch Standing: A Potentially Surprising, Occasionally Witty Journey Inside Today's Supreme Court. Drawing on history, law, and current debates, Isgur offers an engaging look at the Supreme Court, exploring its unique role in American democracy, how the Court became the nation’s “last branch standing,” and what its growing power means for the future of the Constitution. We invite you to be part of the conversation. Share your questions in advance at bookclub@constitutioncenter.org. Your question may be selected and asked live during the event.

Community
Community, as defined in the Oxford Dictionary, is “a feeling of fellowship with others, as
a result of sharing common attitudes and interests”. A sense of community can lead to
empowerment and foster change in one’s life. My intention with this installation is to
suggest and comment on the urgency in our world these days of people coming
together regardless of their physicality or ethnicity. I hope to inspire introspection and
unity as we move forward during this challenging global time.
These storefront exhibitions are viewable 24/7 from the outside.

Ornamental Plants in Philadelphia Gardens in the Early 1700s
Before 1750, Philadelphia gardens were not just kitchen gardens, they also cultivated lots of ornamental plants, grown for their beauty, colors, scent, and to make nature prints as a form of botanical art. Many of these plants were imported from Europe, but some were native to the Pennsylvania region. There were gardens in Germantown and at Stenton (James Logan’s estate in north Philadelphia) that cultivated and celebrated vibrant ornamental plants like anemones, tulips, daffodils, roses, lilies, columbines, Polianthes tuberosa, violets, and African, French and European marigolds.
Join historian Miranda Mote for a lecture that tells a story of beautiful, ornamental plants in colonial Philadelphia gardens, before 1750.

Copland's American Inspiration
Copland captured the American spirit in his music, so evocative of windswept prairies, mountain hollows, and the optimism and resilience idealistically attributed to the inheritors of the new world. Like Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, and Rodeo, his Third Symphony—the source of his Fanfare for the Common Man—summons that irrepressible spirit in a deeply satisfying listening experience.
Is there a composer more uniquely American than Aaron Copland? Conjuring up images of the fog-shrouded Blue Ridge and the sun-brittle prairie, celebrating the sweat of honest toil and the heroism of the everyday, he embodies the heart of the American ethos. No matter how many times you’ve heard the clarion call of his Fanfare for the Common Man, its soaring spirit summons pride. Get ready for goosebumps.

History Talk: The Master of Drums: Gene Krupa and The Music He Gave The World
Historical Society of Moorestown Trustee Elizabeth J. Rosenthal will speak about her recently published book, The Master of Drums: Gene Krupa and The Music He Gave The World. It is the definitive biography of Gene Krupa, one of the most famous drummers of all time, whose feverish rhythms defined the Swing Era, changed jazz music forever, spurred rock and roll, and influenced generations. From jazz to the Swing Era, to rock and roll. Elizabeth J. Rosenthal recounts the pioneering drummer's exploits, challenges, and accomplishments, while framing him against not just his fellow musicians and peers but the music industry and general culture as a whole. The Master of Drums has been nominated for the Jazz Journalists Association’s book award.
As a special treat, Liz will be joined by Moorestown's Steve Pappaterra, who will demonstrate some of the techniques and styles pioneered by Krupa. Steve began playing drums professionally at age 17 as a member of The Lamplighters, an 18-piece big band modeled after the Gle…

Conductor and composer Matthias Pintscher plays a dual role in this program, conducting his 2022 work Assonanza, written for the violinist Leila Josefowicz, who performs it here. Hear this “daring, probing, thinking, da…

May 1st First Friday at NoName Gallery
This First Friday, we’re bringing together two distinct but connected bodies of work—photography by Allan Ali and a focused presentation of abstract works by EZV.
Allan Ali’s black-and-white photographs reflect on life as a series of paths—some shared, others walked alone. Many of these images were created in moments of solitude, where observation becomes sharper and the world feels both expansive and deeply personal. Rooted in memory and influenced by his family’s creative legacy, his work carries a quiet sense of connection across time.
In a separate gallery space, EZV’s abstract works explore the space between what we see and what we feel. Drawing from their environment, the work layers form, texture, and metaphor to translate lived experience into something more internal—where memory, identity, and emotion intersect.
Together, the exhibition moves between observation and interpretation—offering two ways of seeing the world, side by side.

Howie Day
City Winery Philadelphia Present Howie Day live on Saturday, May 2nd at 7:30pm.
Howie Day’s emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic, heartfelt shows, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into fluttering, high registers, but also grates with real, pleading grit,” as one critic put it. A native of Bangor, Maine, Day began playing piano at age five and guitar at age 12. By 15, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after graduating high school, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote, financed and released his first effort, Australia, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loop-sampling techniques as he performed, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar part…

Philadelphia Orchestra Presents: Copland’s American Inspiration
Conductor and composer Matthias Pintscher plays a dual role in this program, conducting his 2022 work Assonanza, written for the violinist Leila Josefowicz, who performs it here. Hear this “daring, probing, thinking, da…

Théâtre Motus: Baobab
In this “little gem of international theatre,” (Winnipeg Free Press) griots, or West African storytellers, share the tale of a water-stealing sun and an ancient baobab tree that produces an unexpected gift: a baby who is heralded to save the region from prolonged drought. Featuring traditional music from Mali and Senegal, puppets large and small, one naughty monkey and a witch with an itch to dance, Baobab is a percussion-filled fable about a young boy’s heroic quest to save his village. Making its Philadelphia debut, Théâtre Motus’ “Baobab is the next best thing to The Lion King, only smaller-scale and far better tailored (at 55 minutes) to young attention spans.” (Montreal Gazette).

Shucked
SHUCKED is the Tony Award®–winning musical comedy The Wall Street Journal calls “flat out hilarious!” And nobody knows funny like economists. Featuring a book by Tony Award winner Robert Horn (Tootsie), a score by the Grammy® Award–winning songwriting team of Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally (Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow”) and directed by Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray), this corn-fed, corn-bred American musical is sure to satisfy your appetite for great musical theater.
Maizy and Beau are getting hitched, when the corn that protects their small community starts to die. The town needs answers. But who will dare to venture beyond the borders of Cob County?

Disability in Late 18th-Century London
A mezzotint in Winterthur’s collection called Mirth and Friendship shows a perfectly normal scene in mid-18th-century London—a group of men drinking in a tavern. His name was Edward Bamford, and he was a hatter and family man who became a minor celebrity after his death in 1768. Benedict, a powerful voice in historical fiction who champions underrepresented women, returns with a tale of a young woman who unearths the truth about the forgotten Pharaoh Hatshepsut, whose reign was bold, visionary — and nearly erased from history.
The event, hosted by BLOCS and featuring a discussion and Q&A led by BLOCS Development Manager Amy Impellizzeri, invites young women from Philadelphia schools to join the conversation.

Dance Classes for Teens
The program focuses on developing confidence, coordination, musicality, and foundational dance technique, while creating a judgment-free space where teens can grow at their own pace. No prior dance experience is required—just a willingness to learn and have fun.
Participants in the program will also have the exciting opportunity to perform in the studio’s Spring Showcase in May, giving them a chance to experience the stage, celebrate their progress, and share their new skills with family and friends.
The team at The X-Perience Dance Company understands that the teenage years can be challenging, and self-confidence can sometimes take a hit. Through movement, creativity, and community, the program aims to provide teens with a positive outlet where they can express themselves, build confidence, and experience the joy of dance.

Portraying the English Country House: Travel and Transmission across the Atlantic
Join Kedra Kearis, associate curator, art and visual culture, for an insider’s look at the legendary Attingham Summer School, a 16-day immersion in the art, architecture, and landscapes of England’s great country estates. This talk invites you behind the scenes of the Attingham experience, where private tours, expert lectures, and hands-on workshops bring centuries of design and collecting to life. Dr. Kearis will share how these encounters are shaping her curatorial vision at Winterthur and will highlight surprising connections between British and American art: the impact of the European Grand Tour, the role of women as patrons and collectors, and the power of prints and publications to carry the style of…

A Sensible and Human Bohemia: The Utopian Moment in American Arts and Crafts, 1895–1903
At the turn of the 19th century across America, intentional communities of artists in Rose Valley, Byrdcliffe, and Roycroft were havens for handcraft, worker dignity, and the promotion of beautiful art for the masses, and were works of art in themselves—total sensory installations of the Arts and Crafts Movement—that stood as model community-workshops, suggesting that there could be an alternative to brutal industrialization. The talk is presented by Thomas A. Guiler, Director of Museum Affairs, Oneida Community House.
The Research at Winterthur series, presented by the Winterthur Library and the Research Fellowship Program, showcases new projects and publications that tap into our rich collections and resources, unveiling innovative perspectives for exploring the fascinating stories that objects can tell about people and our shared past. Avery Lynch
City Winery Philadelphia presents Avery Lynch live on Friday, May 8th at 7:30pm.
Singer-songwriter Avery Lynch is here to get you through your breakup. Frequently described as a happy girl filled with sad songs, Avery puts storytelling first, drawing inspiration from observing the people around her, the media she consumes, and, of course, her own life. She starts each of her songs alone with her piano, eventually working with her close knit team to bring her work to life. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Avery fell in love with music playing piano at seven years old. Since then, she has created a sound around her soft vocals and raw piano ballads focusing on building community through her storytelling and lyricism.
