Adult One-Time Introductory Classes

Join our one time class to learn the basics of handbuilding! All participants must be at least 6 years old, and accompanied by an adult if they are younger than 10 years old. There is a $20.00 fee if you would like to keep what you throw. We will then finish and glaze your piece with a color of your choosing, and your piece will be ready for pick up 4 weeks after your class. We will notify you when your piece is finished, and we will hold your piece for 1 month after its completion before donating it. Please note that you must clean your wheel and area thoroughly at the end of class. The kiln is an unpredictable place, and occasionally pieces may not successfully make it through both firings intact. If this happens, we will work with you to find a fair solution. Join us as we dig into history with archaeological excavations at Newlin Grist Mill and learn more about the site through the evidence under our feet! The public is invited to participate (or just watch) as Newlin Grist Mill’s professional archaeologist, Keith Doms, and a dedicated corps of archaeology volunteers seek to gain a deeper understanding of the site’s history through careful excavation using scientific techniques and thorough documentation. Depending on the day, visitors might be invited to help screen excavated soil to look for small artifacts or assist with cleaning artifacts that have already been excavated. See the world through the eyes of French painter Julien Rey. Color blind, Rey sees the world only in black and white – a contrast reflected not only in his palette, but in the subjects of his work. Rey's paintings begin in the city, where his architectural approach to urban compositions, sharp lines and rich texture evoke the constant movement and organized chaos of city life. On the other side is a natural world untouched by urbanization: towering mountaintops, the tranquility of a boat on water, and the peacefulness of a single tree.
