Reimagined Street Scenes
This installation features six illuminated art panels hand crafted by Lisa Marie Patzer Studios. The visuals are inspired from photographic 35mm slides shot by Ben Kabakow, a NYC postal worker and photographer. Kabakow travelled the world throughout the mid-1900's, capturing images of urban features such as buildings, cars, signs, and people. With color, pattern, and a retro-graphic design, Lisa Marie reimagines scenes from Ben's travels with a surreal and whimsical aesthetic.

Shared Light: Winter Celebrations at Eastern State
Through historical accounts, guided tours, and hands-on activities, learn how people at Eastern State Penitentiary marked holidays like Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s Day—finding moments of light, connection, and meaning within the confines of prison life. These stories reflect not only the traditions of the time, but also the deep human need for hope and community, even in the harshest conditions.
The program also invites reflection on the experiences of incarcerated people today. Across the U.S. people in prisons and jails continue to observe holidays—sometimes with support, often with significant restrictions.
Shared Light: Winter Celebrations at Eastern State offers an opportunity to consider the lasting impact of incarceration on people, families, and communities during a season traditionally centered around togetherness. All programs included with standard admission.

Lisa Marie Patzer is a digital media artist, designer, and entrepreneur creating site-specific art that integrates light, pattern, historic imagery, and vibrant color. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to the field, she received the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2019. The following year, she was awarded the Sachs Arts and Innovation grant from the University of Pennsylvania. In 2022, Lisa Marie founded her company Lisa Marie Patzer Studio, where she works with private clients, interior designers, and individua…

January First Friday
This First Friday, stop into the Museum for Art in Wood and experience its current exhibitions. On view in the main gallery, A Usable Past: Reflections on a Nation and Its Inheritance, brings together sculpture by twelve artists who reckon with America’s layered histories. A powerful exhibition, drawing on the metaphorical power inherent in the material of wood, these artists translate inheritance into form, giving “shape and substance to national identity.” In addition, on view in the Museums Research Library is the collection-themed exhibition American Graffiti: Painting, Dyeing, and Surface Design in Wood, which follows the rebellious, experimental, and often quirky spirit of artists who dare to obscure the unadulterated beauty of wood grain.
While visitors are at the Museum, explore its permanent collection featuring over 1,400 objects and shop the Museum Store for unique handmade objects, jewelry, artworks, and books.

Paulownia Tableau
A tableau is a picturesque grouping of persons or objects to create a striking or artistic scene. Historically, these scenes were drawn from history, mythology or religious text. I have captured the natural forms of dried paulownia leaves and recast them as colorful elements in this paulownia tableau. The leaves are supported by paulownia branches and wood bits. This composition is meant to stimulate your imagination and provide a closer look at the natural world.

Book signing event with author Nicole Glover
Nicole Glover is a fantasy writer whose Murder & Magic series spans generations of a family with magical powers. Her work blends historical fiction with cozy fantasy. Her novels The Conductors and The Undertakers take place in post Civil War Philadelphia where Hetty Rhodes and her husband Benjy were part of the Underground Railroad using magic to help free enslaved people. Now, they are solving mysteries in the Black community that white authorities won’t touch. Her novel The Improvisers takes place during the Prohibition Era where one of Hetty Rhodes’ descendants—who is also a wielder of magic—is a pilot that discovers a dangerous artifact that is controlling people.
Glover’s newest novel, The Starseekers, releases on January 6, 2026. The story centers on another Rhodes family member, Cynthia Rhodes, a NASA arcane engineer in the mid-1900s who is brilliant at both math and magic. She becomes involved in an investigation of a mysterious theft at the arcane history museum which leads to surprising connection…

Draw the Circle
“How can we live when we are driven by love instead of fear?” This autobiographical solo work, a meditation on identity and presence, is the story of a suburban girl named Shireen and a Brooklyn man named Deen, and the things we do to be together. Taking us on their epic journey of transition with a myriad cast of characters, this one-person show explores the courage it takes for us to live authentically when we do not fit society, religion, or familial expectations of gender. This compassionate coming-of-self-story is anchored deeply in humanity and told with heart and humor.

Curtis Symphony Orchestra: Osmo Conducts Bartók
Embark on a musical odyssey with renowned Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä. The evening begins with Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), a swirling, celestial work inspired by planetary motion and the roiling drone of the medieval stringed instrument, the hurdy-gurdy. Henry Dorn’s powerful Transitions follows, a deeply personal tone poem reflecting on loss, transformation, and resilience.
The program features the world premiere of a new concerto for woodwinds and orchestra by David Serkin Ludwig, performed by Grammy-winning quintet and Curtis faculty Imani Winds. The concert concludes with Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a virtuosic showcase that transforms each section of the ensemble into dazzling soloists. Charting a bold musical journey across five movements—this masterwork blends folk-inspired melodies, modernist harmonies, and brilliant orchestration, making it one of the most beloved orchestral pieces of the 20th century.

Ruckus with Davóne Tines: What is Your Hand in This?
Intrepid early music ensemble Ruckus and boundary-pushing singer Davóne Tines deliver the bite of America’s earliest revolutionary music, time-traveling through four centuries of reimagined songs, hymns and dance tunes. “The world’s only period instrument rock band,” (San Francisco Chronicle) Ruckus is known for its visceral approach, fusing a Baroque band’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music. A Penn Live Arts debut with bass-baritone Tines, a "singer of immense power and fervor," (Los Angeles Times) this concert ponders the fragile American experiment, asking how we stand up against wrongdoing while still coming together as a country.

A sharp, self-aware standup set where comedy meets the chaos of being human.
Artful Impact: Benefiting Chester County Futures
When comedian Glen Tickle made a list of ways to try to be better at comedy, he realized the list was a combination of personality flaws, bad habits, and neurodiversity. Loudon Wainwright III & Chris Smither: WXPN Welcomes
They first met in the late 1960s amidst the folk revival, and since then, Loudon Wainwright III and Chris Smither have each made an indelible mark on the contemporary singer-songwriter scene. With influences from folk, country, jazz and rock, Wainwright’s music is rich, candid and witty, as he “wrings more human truth out of his contradiction than any other songwriter of his generation.” Smither’s folk and blues sound is layered over the ever-present backbeat of his tapping feet, taking “the blues in a direction entirely his own: stoic existential ruminations sung in a pained, weathered moan and set to quietly virtuosic guitar.” Don’t miss this Penn Live Arts debut of two music icons.
