Over the last two decades, California has experienced severe drought and flood conditions. These extreme weather patterns impact the communities of organisms who call our streams home. Since 2001, Sierra Streams Institute has worked with community science volunteers to
monitor benthic macroinvertebrates (BMI), small aquatic insects that live in the bottom of streams. Because BMI species differ in their response and tolerance to environmental stressors, they can be used as indicators of stream health. Come learn how our local creek is responding to

RETURN OF PIONEER DAY IN SMARTSVILLE
On Saturday April 27, 2024, from 9 am to 4 pm, the little town of Smartsville will once again come alive with live music on stage, tours of the mining areas, children’s activities, arts and crafts vendors, and of course, visitors will be able to see inside the former Catholic Church and witness our amazing restoration progress. This year there is more to see than ever.
Two of the most popular bands at Pioneer Day will be returning. Buffalo Gals is an old-time string band, featuring energetic fiddle tunes as well as old country favorites. The Stamp Mill Stompers is a highly entertaining group of musicians from the Nevada County Concert Band, playing Dixieland classics.
Our mining tours take visitors into the hydraulic mining area of Smartsville. It was here that placer gold in an ancient river channel was recovered using huge “water cannons” and long tunnels as sluices. Tour guides are experts at the history and mechanics of this type of mining.

Gold Country Kiwanis, Nevada County Office of Emergency Services and our Fire Safe Council will be hosting the 19th Annual Health/Safety & Fire Preparedness Carnival on Saturday, May 4th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rood Center, 950 Maidu Avenue, Nevada City. Our goal is to dispense valuable health, wellness and safety information to children, families and seniors at a fun and free, community-wide event.
Local organizations and agencies will distribute helpful information. Fire fighters, CHP, sheriff and police officers, rescue, hospital, ambulance and helicopter personnel will be displaying and demonstrating safety equipment. Ninety exhibitors will occupy nearly 3 acres. Our goal is to make children and their parents feel comfortable should emergency services be required and to assist in safeguarding families against fires.
