The Moonshot Approach to Philanthropy: A Framework From “What-Ifs?” to Action

Philanthropy today faces a paradox: the problems it seeks to solve are increasingly complex, yet funding practices remain cautious, fragmented, and short-term. This launch event introduces a new report on enhancing risk-taking in philanthropy, offering a practical and evidence-informed framework for funders who want to pursue systemic change without mistaking recklessness for courage. Drawing on research, practitioner insights, and real-world cases, the report reframes risk not as something to be avoided, but as something to be designed, governed, and learned from. The event brings together philanthropists, foundation leaders, intermediaries, and ecosystem partners for a concise presentation of the report’s core ideas, followed by a facilitated dialogue on what it would actually take to fund bolder bets over the long-term. This is not a call for “more risk” for its own sake. It is an invitation to take better risk—not by waiting for certainty, but by building the capability to fund boldly in its absence.
