Demystifying AI: How Smart Are Machines Really?
Library
Ever wonder why a brilliant AI model can ace a practice test but fail in the real world? This workshop pulls back the curtain on how machine learning actually works.
We'll move past the jargon to explore the core challenge: getting AI to perform well on new, unseen data (not just what it was trained on). We'll unpack common pitfalls, like an AI that "memorizes" instead of "learns," and discover surprising modern findings that defy traditional logic.
Walk away with a clear, intuitive understanding of what makes AI reliable and robust. This session will also offer a sneak peek into the key concepts from the new book, Deep Learning Generalization.

When AI Goes Wrong
Library
We've all read the misadventures when AI technology has been used as a tool to unexpected results e.g, hallucinations, misclassifications, etc. - sometimes humorous, sometimes disastrous. Developed with the Centre for Digital Law and meant for the curious layperson, this 1-hour lecture will delve deeper to discover why this happens, the points of failures and biases, how it is influencing our intellectual and environmental landscapes, and the questions we can ask when we choose to interact with AI. This lecture will not cover how to use specific tools but will explore underlying ethical conundrums and the socioenvironmental impact of AI.

STARI Lunchtime Seminar - What Does ‘Source’ Really Mean? Re-Examining Source Rules in Double Tax Conventions
Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia
Most jurisdictions tax nonresidents only on their domestically sourced income. However, determining where income is sourced has been a longstanding headache for tax students, academics, policymakers, and industry stakeholders — though lawyers may view it as a bonanza. As Professor Avi-Yonah observed, source rules “are a wonderful thing for lawyers and something that causes economists to despair,” not least because “most tax economists today believe that income does not have a single source that can be pinpointed” (Avi-Yonah, 2007). Professor Arnold similarly notes that “the concept of source is poorly developed in domestic tax legislation and tax treaties” (Arnold, 2023).
Does “source” refer to the place where value is created, where goods or services are consumed, or where the outbound payment is made? A relatively common perception is that active income is sourced in the country where contributions to income generation occur, whereas passive income is sourced in the payor’s country. However, with the rapid…

Towards Sustainable AI-Supported Software Development: Balancing Efficiency and Developer Needs
School of Computing and Information Systems
The rapid integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) into software development has catalyzed a paradigm shift from human-only development to a collaborative human-AI software ecosystem. While this transition offers significant short-term performance gains, the long-term viability of AI-supported development is increasingly challenged by escalating computational costs, the accumulation of technical debt, and the erosion of human oversight. This dissertation proposal argues that sustainability must be a foundational requirement, not an afterthought, for the future of AI-supported software development.
To facilitate this vision, this dissertation proposal presents seven research contributions, covering three interdependent pillars: Environmental Sustainability, Economic Sustainability, and Social Sustainability. For environmental sustainability, this dissertation proposal presents a line of work on AI-friendly code representation to minimize the computational footprint during software development. For Economic…

IR & Cinema: Screening ‘The Nose Knows: Foreignness and Fortune in China
School of Social Sciences
What can films tell us about international relations? We will explore this question by screening William A. Callahan’s documentary film ‘The Nose Knows: Foreigness and Fortune in China’ (2025, 23min), which has won six awards at film festivals in Asia and Europe.
There are so many different kinds of noses. But what can they tell us? Can they be political? Throughout Chinese history, noses have been used to separate Chinese people from foreigners. In the present day, they can also be the key to changing your destiny. If we know more about noses, perhaps we can better understand how China sees itself and its increasingly important place in the world.

Operations Management Research Seminar

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (AI) models have been proposed to mitigate overreliance and underreliance on AI, which reduce the effectiveness of human-AI collaborative tools. Yet, empirical evidence is mixed, and the impact of explainable AI on a decision-maker (DM)'s cognitive load and fatigue is often ignored. This paper offers a theoretical perspective on these issues. We develop an analytical model that incorporates the defining features of human and machine intelligence, capturing the limited but flexible nature of human cognition with imperfect machine recommendations. Crucially, we represent how AI-based explanations influence the DM's belief in the algorithm's predictive quality. Our results indicate that explainable AI has varying effects depending on the level of explainability it provides. While low explainability levels have no impact on decision accuracy and reliance levels, they lessen the cognitive burden of the DM. In contrast, higher explainability levels enhance accuracy by improving o…

MITB MAsterclass: AI-Driven Security Analysis
Office of Alumni Relations
Can cybersecurity professionals still keep up with today’s evolving threat landscape?
Cybersecurity is entering a new era where human expertise alone can no longer keep pace with the volume, velocity, and sophistication of modern threats. Traditional tools and manual analysis methods are increasingly inadequate in complex systems where new vulnerabilities and attack vectors emerge daily.
At the same time, rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), are reshaping how security professionals detect, analyse, and respond to vulnerabilities.
In this Masterclass, Dr Shar will take participants through how AI enables just-in-time vulnerability detection in modern software systems. Drawing on real-world case studies, interactive walkthroughs, and cutting-edge tools from a SCIS research project developed in collaboration with GovTech, the session will explore how AI is being integrated into vulnerability analysis and red-team workflows today.

Operations Management Research Seminar

We initiate the study of joint strategic behavior of customers and servers in many-server queueing systems. We model customers as strategic agents who decide whether to join the system by weighing reward from service against cost of waiting, following the seminal works of Naor (1969) and Knudsen (1972). In those works, customers use a threshold equilibrium joining strategy based on the number of customers already in the system (whereas servers operate at fixed exogenous rates). Moreover, customers "over-join" (that is, induce a higher threshold) compared to the socially optimal threshold, a result known as Naor's inequality. Although Naor's inequality is known to hold widely in queueing systems with strategic customers, no work has considered whether or not it holds when servers are also strategic (specifically, in choosing how fast to work). We investigate this question within a large-system asymptotic framework when servers choose service rates to balance reward and effort cost.
We show that at equilibrium,…

SGRI Seminar: New Frontiers in Insolvency Law: Towards a Contractualization of Financial Distress?
Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia
The length and costs of formal insolvency proceedings have encouraged regulators, policymakers, practitioners and scholars to explore alternative mechanisms for addressing financial distress. This event will examine the emerging trend toward the “contractualization” of financial distress, that is, a shift whereby parties increasingly structure financial restructuring and insolvency arrangements outside traditional court processes, as well as the growing need to providedebtors and creditors with greater flexibility to deal with financial distress. To that end, the event will discuss the rise of hybrid procedures, including pre-packaged reorganizations and pre-arranged sales of businesses, along with the strategies and regulatory conditions needed to facilitate out-of-court restructurings. It will also examine the use of arbitration in insolvency-related disputes, different approaches to the choice of insolvency forum, and how the use of AI may facilitate contractual solutions for the resolution of financial di…

SOSS Seminar | The New Politics of Knowledge: Globalizing Knowledge and the Future of Intellectuals, Universities, Issues and Publics
School of Social Sciences
How has the last decade amplified and challenged the themes of Kennedy’s 2015 book, Globalizing Knowledge? First discussed publicly at Singapore Management University in that year, we can see that concerns over intellectual responsibility and university accountability abide. However, changes in American and global power relations, anticipated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but finding new fulfillment in the proliferation of strongmen politics elsewhere, challenge how academic freedom is to be conceived and the politics of diversity and inclusion articulated. Kennedy draws on his own Brown University’s experience to characterize the recent past & anticipate alternative futures.

Lunchtime Seminar: Regulation Beyond Technology
Centre for Digital Law
Academic and policy thinking about law and technology tends to fall into particular grooves. We focus on the technology, both its potential to make things better and because we might constrain it through regulation to mitigate harms. The conversation often starts with a definition of some particular technology and then explores what how we might regulate that defined thing. This paper will explore the origins of this mental habit, then explore how it constrains our thinking through the example of artificial intelligence (AI) and fairness. It concludes with some thoughts on better starting places for exploring how to approach governance of our ever-changing socio-technical landscape.

Lunchtime Seminar: Institutional Trust and the Adoption of Digital Money: What Asia Can Learn from a Non-Asian Experiment
Centre for Digital Law
As digital money becomes increasingly widespread, countries around the world are actively considering the issuance of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) - a digital form of sovereign currency issued and regulated by central banks. With more than 130 Asian and non-Asian jurisdictions currently exploring or piloting CBDCs, understanding public attitudes toward their adoption has become a critical policy question.
This lecture presents findings from a dedicated empirical study conducted in collaboration with the Bank of Israel, examining public willingness to adopt a Digital Shekel. The study reveals a relatively high level of interest in using a CBDC among Israeli respondents. Notably, concerns over privacy - particularly state surveillance and data misuse, which feature prominently in CBDC debates in both Asian and non-Asian contexts, did not emerge as a dominant barrier. Instead, the results point to a high level of trust in the central bank.
The lecture explores the role of institutional trust as a ke…

The Moonshot Approach to Philanthropy: A Framework From “What-Ifs?” to Action
Business Families Institute
Philanthropy today faces a paradox: the problems it seeks to solve are increasingly complex, yet funding practices remain cautious, fragmented, and short-term. This launch event introduces a new report on enhancing risk-taking in philanthropy, offering a practical and evidence-informed framework for funders who want to pursue systemic change without mistaking recklessness for courage.
Drawing on research, practitioner insights, and real-world cases, the report reframes risk not as something to be avoided, but as something to be designed, governed, and learned from.
The event brings together philanthropists, foundation leaders, intermediaries, and ecosystem partners for a concise presentation of the report’s core ideas, followed by a facilitated dialogue on what it would actually take to fund bolder bets over the long-term.
This is not a call for “more risk” for its own sake. It is an invitation to take better risk—not by waiting for certainty, but by building the capability to fund boldly in its absence.

Ideas Festival 2026 | Building Resilient Legal Systems in the AI Age
School of Social Sciences
Artificial intelligence is reshaping the global environment in which legal systems operate—not only by transforming how individuals, firms, and governments act, but also by reconfiguring the broader political economy that sustains them. Resilience in this context means ensuring that legal systems can anticipate, absorb, and adapt to technological disruption while continuing to deliver justice, maintain legitimacy, and safeguard rights. Without deliberate strategies for resilience, legal systems risk narrowing into brittle, tech-dominated structures: constrained in their options, vulnerable to capture, and unable to fulfil their core functions.
Engage with this panel that convenes experts across academia, government, and industry to explore how law can remain a stabilising force in the age of AI and to identify practical strategies for embedding resilience “by design” into legal institutions.
*Registration starts at 3.00pm. A light dinner reception will be served after the event.

Building Resilient Legal Systems in the Age of AI
Centre for Digital Law

Ideas Festival 2026 | Resilient Singapore: Reimagining the Civic Core through Environmental History
School of Social Sciences
The history of Singapore’s urban centre is a showcase for resilience in the island city. Its changing landscape is a direct reflection of the things that have made Singapore, from the early port to the agricultural areas, military and civic development, to the reclamation projects. Their development has been the cornerstone of, and reflected, social and economic growth, as Singapore moved through good times, and bad. Each of these socio-economic shifts has left its memory inscribed into the landscape and with them, a story.
Starting from Armenian Street at the front of SMU’s Yong Pung How School of Law, this tour delves into the landscape under our feet, imagining a Singapore as it was at different points in its chronology, from the agricultural development of the nineteenth century, to the technological innovations of the early twentieth century, to the Japanese occupation, and beyond. This will be a predominantly social and environmental history, as opposed to a classic national history, one which will tel…

Ideas Festival 2026 | Managing Technology and Trade Disruptions: Building Resilience in a Shifting International Landscape
School of Social Sciences
We are entering a new era of global trade (dis)order, shaped by powerful waves of technological and economic disruption. From generative AI transforming production and services, to tariff escalations redrawing trade routes, these shifts are reconfiguring the foundations of international commerce. They bring real opportunities—efficiency gains from emerging technologies, new markets, and innovative business models—but also serious challenges, including fragmentation, heightened uncertainty, and systemic complexity. Together, these dynamics underscore the urgent need for resilience.
Bringing together diverse perspectives, this event will explore how businesses and other actors in the region can adapt to and navigate this fast-changing landscape. Key questions include: How can we better understand and prepare for emerging trends? Do these disruptions challenge our long-held assumptions? And how can actors remain resilient and agile in the face of volatility? Join us to exchange insights, build partnerships, and…

Ideas Festival 2026 | Still Worth Doing? A Public Conversation on the Future of Work
School of Social Sciences
Perhaps the only thing clear about the future of work is its own uncertainty. Yet, amid economic disruption and the rise of AI, public discussion has mostly been limited to predicting available jobs and “employable” degrees. This panel shifts our attention back to the question of work and its role in social life. What will change in the everyday tasks we fulfil as workers, and what meaning should we give to such efforts? What sort of career is still worthy of human skill and emotion? How do we review a performance when labor is partly outsourced to technology?
Featuring researchers from across Singapore’s universities, this panel will discuss the changes and challenges in three major aspects of work: care, creativity, and communications. In looking ahead, this panel explores not only what jobs will likely persist, but how work must and should evolve. Join us to reimagine the future of work!
*Registration starts at 3.00pm. Light refreshment will be served during registration.
