Exploring research impact beyond traditional metrics: Scite on citation sentiment

Library Institutional evaluations have traditionally been limited in that their assessment of research impact via citations received has relied on a simple count of citations. In this talk, Sean C. Rife, PhD, co-founder of Scite, and a Professor of Psychology at Murray State University, will present a new approach to rankings that incorporates the content of citations using Scite's data, which classifies citations as supporting, mentioning, or contrasting. Sean will outline the process of collecting citation data, classifying citations, tying published works to institutions, and how these data are used to compute a content-weighted impact score for institutions that incorporates both the volume of citations received as well as the number of supporting and contrasting citations received. Examples from Scite's rankings report for institutions and journals will be included, and limitations will be discussed. Speaker Details: Sean C. Rife, PhD is a co-founder of Scite, and a Professor of Psychology at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, USA. His research and teaching focuses on moral and political psychology, as well as metascience and the role bibliometrics can play in the reform of scientific institutions. He is Head of Academic Relations at Research Solutions, Inc. Scite’s parent company, where he is heading up their research on entity rankings. RSVP: . Type: Webinar & Online Learning. Addressing Sparsity For Knowledge Graph Completion: Data And Model Perspectives

School of Computing and Information Systems This dissertation addresses data sparsity in KGC through complementary data- and model-level solutions. It introduces (1) Diversified and Adaptive Negative Sampling (DANS) to produce more informative negatives for supervised learning, (2) FusionAdapter for modality-preserving, parameter-efficient multimodal fusion to mitigate long-tail relation issues, and (3) RelAdapter, a context-aware adapter that enables relation-specific adaptation under distribution shift. In addition, an ongoing line of work is outlined as future research, which explores bridging knowledge graphs with large language models through interpretable tokenization. Overall, these contributions provide a cohesive path toward more robust and generalizable knowledge graph completion. Subtitle: PhD Dissertation Defense by LIU Ran. Contact: scisseminars@smu.edu.sg. Enhancing Multi-view, Multi-modal Sensing, Perception and Actuation For Edge Intelligence

School of Computing and Information Systems Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) technologies have revolutionized intelligent sensing within Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), powering applications such as large-scale surveillance and autonomous transportation. These systems rely heavily on vision-based Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), yet executing such complex models on resource-constrained edge devices remains a challenge. Transmitting high-bandwidth sensor data to the cloud is impractical, while lightweight DNNs deployed locally often compromise accuracy. This dissertation addresses this core tradeoff by introducing the concept of collaborative DNN inference, where multiple IoT nodes with overlapping Fields-of-View (FoVs) share intermediate representations or compact features to enhance perception quality while minimizing bandwidth usage. The research spans three major contributions. ComAI introduces feature-level collaboration among stationary cameras, enabling small edge DNNs to achieve detection accuracy close to that of larger models while sustaini… Subtitle: PhD Dissertation Defense by Dhanuja Tharith WANNIARACHCHIGE. SOSS Seminar | Three Scientific Answers to Revolutionary Trauma: Ye Wenjie, Liu Cixin, and Chinese Cybernetics

School of Social Sciences How can revolutionary trauma contribute to political thinking? This paper examines three science-based responses to the trauma of the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), situated at the intersection of fiction and historical experience. Each arises from a different source: Ye Wenjie, the fictional physicist in Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem; Liu himself across his writings; and Chinese cybernetic thinkers of the 1980s. Comparing these responses, I reconstruct a spectrum of post-traumatic rationalism in which science becomes a vehicle for rethinking—or evading—politics. This spectrum ranges from despair over political failure to hope in ostensibly neutral systems of governance, culminating in a tension between passionate politics, scientific optimism, and fatalism. Together, these responses illuminate the Cultural Revolution as not only a political rupture but also a generative moment for reimagining science as a substitute for political judgment and a site for reflecting on the limits of reason after… Contact: socsc_seminar@smu.edu.sg. Graph Perturbations for Robust Knowledge Discovery and Retrieval

School of Computing and Information Systems Graph perturbation studies how small structural edits, e.g. adding or deleting edges, affect graph properties and downstream tasks. While prior work largely targets global statistics or model outputs, robustness for knowledge discovery and information retrieval on attributed graphs is less explored. This dissertation introduces formulations and algorithms that generate and leverage perturbations to make these tasks more reliable. First, we assess the robustness of outstanding facts on knowledge graphs. We formalize two perturbation types: (i) context‑entity swaps and (ii) plausible data insertions and estimate robustness via a perturbation‑relevance distribution, with powerful relevance‑based pruning and importance‑sampling estimators.   Second, we study subgraph counting under adversarial edge additions. We prove the kSub problem is NP‑hard and inapproximable, derive the topkSub relaxation, and design connected/disconnected processing with pruning and unbiased samplers, enabling practical stress tests th… Subtitle: PhD Dissertation Defense by XIAO Hanhua. Lunchtime Seminar - Trustworthy AI and Courts

Centre for Digital Law There is a deep scepticism concerning the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) should be used in the making of judicial decisions. There are normative risks such as inaccuracy, lack of explainability, and accountability, and there are sociological risks to public trust in the judicial system. New legal standards seek to set some guardrails around the use of AI in judicial decision-making but face two problems. First, they underappreciate the Collingridge dilemma, in which premature intervention risks over-regulation and belated intervention risks under-regulation. Second, there is a misplaced faith in the power of legal obligations to provide sufficient and enforceable guidance. This presentation asks how we should test, develop, and roll-out AI in courts and what model of governance should be adopted for its regulation. Contact: cdl@smu.edu.sg. Speaker Details: Professor Malcolm Langford Malcolm Langford is a Professor of Public Law, University of Oslo and Co-Director of TRUST: Norwegian Centre for Trustworthy AI. A lawyer and social scientist, his publications span emerging technologies, international law, and comparative constitutionalism, and he has won several prizes for his work on international adjudication and education. OSTOM: Offline Imitation Learning from Observations via State Transition Occupancy Matching

School of Computing and Information Systems Offline Learning from Observation (LfO) focuses on enabling agents to imitate expert behavior using datasets that contain only expert state trajectories and separate transition data with suboptimal actions. This setting is both practical and critical in real-world scenarios where direct environment interaction or access to expert action labels is costly, risky, or infeasible. Most existing LfO methods attempt to solve this problem through state or state-action occupancy matching. They typically rely on pretraining a discriminator to differentiate between expert and non-expert states, which could introduce errors and instability—especially when the discriminator is poorly trained. While recent discriminator-free methods have emerged, they generally require substantially more data, limiting their practicality in low-data regimes. In this paper, we propose IOSTOM (Imitation from Observation via State Transition Occupancy Matching), a novel offline LfO algorithm designed to overcome these limitations. Attacking Numerical Stability in Machine Learning

School of Computing and Information Systems Numerical instability in machine learning arises when tiny changes in input or computational precision cause large, unpredictable shifts in model output, leading to unreliable predictions in domains like healthcare, finance, and autonomous driving. This instability undermines the robustness and trustworthiness of AI systems in real-world settings. Our research explores how numerical instability itself can be exploited to cause model failures. The first work shows how adding noise to optimization layers (e.g. OptNet) can trigger NaNs and cause complete failure in model inference. The second investigates attacks on Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) that induce instability throughout the network, revealing a novel, distinct threat beyond traditional adversarial perturbations. We conclude by highlighting directions for deeper study into this emerging vulnerability. Subtitle: PhD Dissertation Proposal by WONG Wai Tuck. Contact: scisseminars@smu.edu.sg. Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources Research Seminar

Area Administration Psychological research on clinical vs statistical predictions and more recent research with AI has demonstrated that algorithms make more accurate predictions than humans in many domains. Geopolitical forecasting is a domain with sparce, hard-to-quantify data and elusive reference classes that make predictive model-building difficult. When forecasters make geopolitical predictions, the stakes can be high, and mistakes can lead to the possibility of mass-casualty consequences. These forecasts are often done by humans, although algorithms play important roles. In past geopolitical tournaments hosted by the US Advanced Research Projects Activity, we found support for four psychological drivers of predictive accuracy: finding the right people, training people in probabilistic reasoning, putting people in teams, and placing the very best people (top 2% of performers) in elite teams that worked together. These drivers improved both calibration and resolution.  Statistical algorithms increased the accuracy of the ag… Subtitle: Improving Predictions with Humans and Algorithms. Hybrid-Balance GFlowNet for Solving Vehicle Routing Problems

School of Computing and Information Systems Existing GFlowNet-based methods for vehicle routing problems (VRPs) typically employ Trajectory Balance (TB) to achieve global optimization but often neglect important aspects of local optimization. While Detailed Balance (DB) addresses local optimization more effectively, it alone falls short in solving VRPs, which inherently require holistic trajectory optimization. To address these limitations, we introduce the Hybrid-Balance GFlowNet (HBG) framework, which uniquely integrates TB and DB in a principled and adaptive manner by aligning their intrinsically complementary strengths. Additionally, we propose a specialized inference strategy for depot-centric scenarios like the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP), leveraging the depot node's greater flexibility in selecting successors. Despite this specialization, HBG maintains broad applicability, extending effectively to problems without explicit depots, such as the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). We evaluate HBG by integrating it into two established… Subtitle: Pre-Conference Talk by ZHANG Ni. Contact: scisseminar@smu.edu.sg. Finance Research Seminar

Area Administration Financial disputes are a widespread but understudied feature of consumer financial markets. Using confidential data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), we analyze nearly two million consumer complaints filed since 2014, which have led to an average payout of $1,470 per successful complaint. The volume of complaints and total restitution have increased substantially over time, suggesting significant scope for additional compensation. When understanding who secures restitution–and why–we find little evidence that differences across firms systematically drive restitution outcomes. Instead, product complexity and consumer engagement play key roles–consumers with higher income and education (high-SES) are more likely to explicitly request refunds, claim fraud, and submit supporting documentation, making firms more responsive. Leveraging previously unexamined CFPB monitoring reviews, where the agency systematically screens company responses and issues confidential reports highlighting deficiencies… Subtitle: The Hidden Costs of Financial Services: Consumer Complaints and Financial Restitution. STARI Seminar - Taxing Foreigners Discriminatorily: Lessons from Four Anglo-Legal Systems

Centre for Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia Taxation based on nationality can be problematic under provisions preventing discrimination in domestic law, but particularly when the foreign citizen belongs to a country that has concluded a double tax agreement containing a non-discrimination article. Article 24 of the OECD Model is often overlooked by politicians and can become very inconvenient to policymakers looking for revenue or wanting to influence behaviour. Furthermore, while Article 24 brings a very focused discussion on the treaty-based non-discrimination principle to the debate, advisers should also consider the broader framework of domestic law, which might prevent discrimination on the grounds of nationality. This seminar examines the unusual scope and application of the non-discrimination provisions, particularly relating to discrimination on the grounds of nationality and mainly focusing on the experience of four Anglo-legal system countries, namely Australia, Canada and New Zealand, and Singapore, where there are both current and potentia… Fee(s): Fee: SGD54.50 per pax incl. 9% GST. Operations Management Research Seminar

Area Administration This study explores the impact of technical and social information on human acceptance of algorithmic recommendations in a healthcare context. Specifically, we examine interactions between patients and an artificial intelligence (AI) gatekeeping app that recommends specialty care based on symptoms provided by patients. In a field experiment conducted at a large hospital, patients were randomly assigned to four groups, each receiving AI recommendations in one of four information provision scenarios: (1) recommendation only, (2) recommendation with the technical information of algorithm accuracy, (3) recommendation with the social information of peer acceptance, and (4) recommendation with both algorithm accuracy and peer acceptance. Our analysis shows that patient acceptance of AI recommendations increases with algorithm accuracy or peer acceptance when they are presented independently. When both types of information are disclosed, peer acceptance dominates algorithm accuracy in influencing patient acceptance… Subtitle: Information Disclosure and Acceptance of Algorithmic Advice: A Field Study on Human-AI Interaction in Healthcare Gatekeeping.
