Movie: "The Pilgrims (2015)"

Texana and Genealogy From award-winning director Ric Burns, and with a moving final performance by Roger Rees as William Bradford, The Pilgrims explores the riveting true story of a small group of English Separatists whose determination to worship God as they saw fit planted the seeds of the American dream. Arguably one of the most fateful and resonant events of the last half millennium, the Pilgrims journey west across the Atlantic in the early 17th century is a seminal, if often misunderstood episode of American and world history. The Pilgrims explores the forces, circumstances, personalities and events that converged to exile the English group in Holland and eventually propel their crossing to the New World; a story universally familiar in broad outline, but almost entirely unfamiliar to a general audience in its rich and compelling historical actuality. Additional Info: Screening sponsored by the San Antonio Colony Society of Mayflower Descendants. Saturday, February 23, 2019, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

I Want To Eat The Empanada: Writing for the Liberation of our Bodies

Central Historically, bodies that do not fit into the mainstream magazine narrative, have been excluded or written about in negative ways, often based on negative stereotypes or pathological perspectives. Our bodies have been subject to inhabiting characters often ridiculed or bullied in stories on the page and in media. The act of telling a story that has not been widely shared is a political act. In this workshop we will focus on ways to write ourselves, our bodies, our experiences into a story made up of flesh, of skin, of fat, of desire and of passion. This workshop will be led by Anel I. Flores, awarded Women’s Advocate of the Year 2018 from University of Texas San Antonio and the Nebrija Creadores Award from the Universidad de Alcala de Henares in Madrid, Spain.
