Engineering Cells and Microsystems to Study Mechanobiology

College of Engineering Living organisms generate and respond to mechanical forces and these forces are sensed and created by specialized cells in the body. Force generation and sensing, or more broadly the mechanobiology coupling tissue (cell) mechanics and biology, are essential in normal development, wound healing, and tissue homeostasis. Our mechanical senses of hearing and touch allow us to navigate our environment and interact with one another, yet they remain the least understood of our perceptive senses. Basic life sustaining functions such as breathing, circulation, and digestion are driven autonomously by coordinated contraction of specialized muscle cells, yet how these functions incorporate active feedback via force sensing at the cellular level is an area of active study.  Meanwhile, a variety of specialized stretch activated receptors and mechanically mediated biochemical signaling pathways have been identified in recent years. Importantly, defects in proteins of these mechanically mediated pathways and receptors have… Campus Location: Genome & Biomedical Sciences Facility. Room: 1005. Location of Event: UC Davis Campus. Arnold Joseph Kemp: "I would survive. I could survive. I should survive."

Manetti Shrem Museum The exhibition’s title, taken from a snapshot of a note in the artist’s studio, references interdisciplinary artist Arnold J. Kemp’s unflinching commitment to a politics embedded within a language of abstraction. His work asks us to consider the sensorial gestures that form the self and a people, the personal and the political, the historical and the present. Kemp stages encounters that invite the viewer into the artist’s aesthetic considerations of himself and the world that makes him. It is within this space that we are able to join him in considering how we are made and how we make ourselves. Guest curator: Sampada Aranke, Ph.D. ’13. Campus Location: Manetti Shrem Museum. New Flavors: Collected at the Candy Store

Manetti Shrem Museum Led by aspiring confectioner turned gallerist Adeliza McHugh, the intimate Candy Store Gallery (1962–92) in Folsom, California, fostered an emerging community of artists in the Sacramento region, becoming a beloved space for artists and collectors alike. Inspired by McHugh’s fierce support of her artists, New Flavors: Collected at the Candy Store celebrates and champions the lesser-told stories of the gallery. The Candy Store was a regular home base for UC Davis students and professors showing at different stages in their careers over the 30-year history of the gallery. The exhibiting group comprises alumni Maija Peeples-Bright, Pam Scrutton, Sandra Shannonhouse, Ann Leda Shapiro and Glenn Takai; teachers Luis Cruz Azaceta and George Longfish; and artists Luis Jimenez, Joan Moment, Gladys Nilsson and Jim Nutt from the area’s greater arts community.  Curators: Jenna Blair and Susie Kantor. Wayne Thiebaud Influencer: A New Generation

Manetti Shrem Museum “Wayne Thiebaud Influencer: A New Generation” explores how the professor emeritus, who turns 101 in November, forecast the future of painting through his personal journey to find meaning and reinvention in the medium’s history, in ways that are both current and timeless. Think of this group exhibition as Thiebaud’s classroom operating across time and place, where works of art reverberate with the flow of shared ideas. Nineteen exhibiting artists reflect the breadth of Thiebaud’s influence and honor his dedication to practicing the fundamentals; his penchant to paint the people, places, and objects of daily life; and his passion for looking to the history of art as a source of inspiration. "The Catalytic Science of Making Up and Breaking Up Dinitrogen", William Schneider, Notre Dame [CHE]

College of Engineering The catalytic chemistry of nitrogen is inextricably linked with mankind’s use of energy. Largescale nitrogen fixation (N2 −−→ NH3) revolutionized the production of fertilizer, enabled the population explosion of the 20th century, and now consumes several percent of the world’s energy annually production. NOx reduction (NOx −−→ N2) is integral to reducing the adverse impacts of transportation on urban air quality and health. These and other technologies all depend at their heart on heterogeneous catalysis. In this presentation I will discuss the insights gained by applying molecular-level models and concepts to nitrogen catalytic chemistry. Examples will be drawn from our work on the selective catalytic reduction of NOx in Cu-exchanged zeolites, a problem that has led us to rethink the factors that govern reactivity in zeolites, from NO and NH3 oxidation, problems that have caused us to revisit how we model reactions at metal surfaces, and from N2 reduction, where we are exploring the potential to bypass the c… Room: 1003 Kemper Hall. Reaching Carbon Neutral Transportation In California By 2045: Opportunities And Challenges

ITS-Davis Transportation California has set a very ambitious path to reach carbon neutrality across sectors by 2045. For the transportation sector to achieve this, vehicles will largely need to transition to ZEVs, and all energy systems will need to be near zero carbon by that date. The rate of transition will need to be faster than anything previously seen on a major scale in the transportation system. This talk will cover the findings of our report, conducted across four ITS campuses during 2020 and 2021 and published in April as Driving California’s Transportation Emissions to Zero. I will review the challenges identified, the scenarios developed, and the policies needed to achieve specific targets. The talk will focus primarily on CO2 reduction, technologies, light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and fuels, but will also cover aspects such as infrastructure, regional aspects within the state, workforce aspects, and environmental justice aspects. Finally, remaining issues and needed additional research will be addressed. Speaker… Location of Event: Other. Event Type: Lectures and Seminars.

Campus Location: Manetti Shrem Museum. Location of Event: UC Davis Campus. Cost: Free. Contact Email: llcompton@ucdavis.edu. Contact Phone #: 5303049517. Event Type: Fairs, Expos and Exhibits.
