"Consensus Protocols and Security of Blockchain" [ECE]

College of Engineering Abstract: Blockchain, the technology behind Bitcoin, has emerged as a “secure by design” technology, showing great potential to enable a wide range of decentralized secure applications across a broad spectrum of industries. However, the security of blockchain is largely depending on a threshold assumption. Using the Bitcoin network as an example, a fundamental assumption is that the network is secure as long as adversaries cannot control more than 50% of the network’s gross computing power. In this talk, we will focus on the proof-of-work (PoW) blockchain consensus protocols and examine some fundamental security properties of blockchain. We show that while blockchain promises decentralization, irreversible record keeping, public verifiability, transparency, and user anonymity, etc. these security properties do not come for free and they are not guaranteed. Excessive overhead and performance deficits may place a fundamental limit on the use of blockchain in many applications. We also show that factors, such a… Location of Event: Other. Cost: No Charge. Large-Scale High Resolution 3D Widefield Fluorescence Imaging with a Computational Miniature Mesoscope

College of Engineering Abstract: Large-scale fluorescence imaging is indispensable to biology and neuroscience. The need for imaging in freely behaving animals further drives the development in miniaturized microscopes (miniscopes). However, conventional microscopes / miniscopes are inherently constrained by their limited space-bandwidth product, shallow depth-of-field, and the inability to resolve 3D distributed emitters. In this talk, I will present Computational Miniature Mesoscope (CM2) that overcomes these bottlenecks and enables single-shot 3D imaging across an 8 × 7-mm2 field-of-view and 2.5-mm depth-of-field, achieving 7-µm lateral resolution and better than 200-µm axial resolution. Notably, the CM2 has a compact lightweight design that integrates a microlens array for imaging and an LED array for excitation in a single platform. Its imaging capability is enabled by computational imaging that uses algorithms to augment optics. We experimentally demonstrate mesoscopic 3D imaging on fluorescent beads and fibers in a scatterin… Location of Event: Other. Cost: No Charge. Event Type: Lectures and Seminars. "Design of alloys and microstructures with high radiation resistance", Pascal Bellon, Illinois [MSE]

College of Engineering Materials are commonly subjected to external forcing, for instance plastic deformation during fabrication and shaping, and irradiation during service life in nuclear reactors. While such nonequilibrium forcing can introduce detrimental evolution of material properties, it also creates opportunities for the dynamical stabilization of novel microstructures via self-organization. In particular, ion irradiation and plastic deformation can result in the stabilization of intragranular nanoprecipitates. (See flyer for more details). Room: Virtual Zoom.
