Applied Pathogen Environmental Monitoring Program Online with Personal Practice Kit

Extension The importance of a robust environmental monitoring program cannot be overstated in a food safety plan. The Food Safety Modernization Act and many of the GFSI approved auditing schemes require a risk-based environmental program. Foodborne illnesses and recalls can put a company out of business; a pathogen environmental monitoring (PEM) program is one way of mitigating that risk and ensuring a strong sanitation program. In this course, participants will understand how to create a successful environmental monitoring program without causing the company to go bankrupt on testing costs. Participants will learn how to implement, manage and continually improve the PEM program to mitigate inherent food safety risks. This course is not meant to be just another class on an environmental program. Each student will receive a kit to practice the skills learned in class. In between the two short afternoon class sessions, there will be homework to reinforce concepts. Participants will be able to utilize their skills i… University Location: Online. Forest Insects & Disease Field Day for Forest Owners & Loggers

Extension Is something bugging your trees? Seeing patches of trees dying on your property can be very disheartening. Unfortunately, many people do not act on insect and disease issues until they see visible symptoms. Preventative methods are usually most successful in reducing forest insects and disease problems. Native insects and diseases are a natural part of the forest. However, sometimes they damage more trees than we want them to, especially if we have (usually unknowingly) created a favorable environment for them. This one-day field trip will give participants firsthand exposure to a wide range of insects, diseases and parasitic plants that impair the growth of trees and forests in northern Idaho. Experts will be on hand to help participants identify insect and disease symptoms and discuss practical methods of dealing with them. The Forest Insects & Disease Field Day will be held on Friday, July 23, 2021, in Bonners Ferry. The program will depart from the Boundary County Fairgrounds. It will help them collect some of their own data and strengthen their interactions with professional foresters and technicians regarding data-based forest management decisions. The morning will be spent indoors, focusing on principles guiding measurement of trees and forests. The afternoon will be spent outdoors, measuring a variety of forest characteristics using clinometers, diameter tapes, angle gauges and other forest measurement tools.
