Fire Extinguisher Hands-on Training

This hands-on, live fire training program is designed to provide participants with practical experience in using fire extinguishers effectively. Following the completion of the online "Fire Extinguisher Use" course, attendees will practice their skills to extinguish a live fire. Participants will learn how to select the appropriate extinguisher and execute proper techniques for extinguishing fires safely. This training is highly recommended for all employees to enhance their confidence and competence in fire safety, ensuring they are well-prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations. Lock Out/Tag Out – Authorized Employees Training

In this training we will review the Hazardous Energy Control Standard for U of I personnel and the responsibilities of supervisors.  You will learn to identify when locks/tags are required, the difference between simple and complex procedures, and review definitions of authorized employees, affected employees and other employees.  Required Every two years. Environmental Waste Awareness Training for Shops and Maintenance

This course is designed for maintenance and shop personnel — including those in agriculture, forestry, engineering, art and design, architecture, theater arts and related fields — who may generate or manage chemical and universal waste. Participants will gain essential knowledge on:Safe handling and disposal of universal waste, including lamps, batteries, mercury-containing devices and pesticides, Best practices for waste management and minimization, Regulatory compliance requirements, Spill response procedures, Safety measures to reduce environmental impact, This training is required upon initial assignment and must be renewed every five years. Hazardous Waste Management Workshop for Labs

The Hazardous Waste Management for Laboratory Settings course is designed for employees who generate or manage hazardous waste in laboratory environments. This workshop covers critical topics, including:Safe handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory waste, Compliance with university policies and regulatory requirements, Best practices for waste minimization, Emergency response procedures for hazardous materials incidents, By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to properly manage hazardous waste, used oil, universal waste, sharps, and more—helping maintain a safe and compliant laboratory setting. Fall Protection Training

This course provides employees with information on procedures that must be followed and hands-on training in the application, use and limitations of fall protection equipment. Fall protection must be used when working in areas where standard guardrails or similar barriers are not already in place to prevent exposure to falls of six feet or more. Employees who, under the direction of a competent person, are required to use fall arrest and restraint equipment and systems are required to be provided this training by EHS or their supervisor. Lab Ergonomics Class

Employees are invited to attend an upcoming Ergonomics in Laboratories presentation focused on promoting ergonomics, safety and accident prevention in the laboratories. This voluntary session will cover the fundamentals of ergonomics, including proper computer workstation setup, basic ergonomic principles and practical stretching techniques to help reduce strain and prevent injury. The presentation will also address microscope ergonomics, with guidance on maintaining proper posture during detailed lab work. It aims to teach users the techniques to safely secure and move gas cylinders as well as the procedures for handling cryogenic liquids.
