Secrets of Shibori and Indigo

Explore the beautiful and ancient art of shibori and the use of stitches and knots to create images and patterns on fabric in David Heustess's virtual workshop - Secrets of Shibori. Participants will create small samplers of the various stitches and knots on cotton fabric; experienced students may create their own designs for wall hangings or fabric for quilts/garments. English Country Dance Music for Harps and Hammered Dulcimers

Learn English country dance tunes, as played for the dances, with Anne Lough on the Hammered Dulcimer and Lorinda Jones on Harp.
As an online course, all participants will begin the class together, viewing the selected dance tune before heading to the breakout rooms for their respective instrument. In each “classroom” we will learn to play the tune then take a short break and come back together to listen to instruments lead the tune for a play along and discussion.
Course goal will be to learn 4-5 dance tunes, become familiar with the dance structure and gain an understanding of how to play for dancers or an audience of English Country Dancers.
Intermediate playing level is best for this class, as students will experience melody, chords and accompaniment in different keys and time meters in written standard notation.

Create handmade book art that tells a story connecting your family history, imagery, and craft. Narrate a story of “Who are your people?” of a particular person, or yourself. Students will be prompted before the first session to draft a concept or narrative. Dig up three photos and a few documents for inspiration. Think birth/death/or marriage record, a poem, or a artifact of family lore. The traditional dance music of the Southern U.S. is inextricably linked with the music of Scotland and Ireland. I was born in the Appalachian mountains into an Irish-American family that plays Irish music. Since my earliest memories, the fiddling traditions from both sides of the Atlantic have been ever present in my life and musical career. In this lesson series, we will explore how the history of Scottish and Irish immigration has influenced the evolution of traditional Southern fiddling. I will demonstrate various fiddle styles, bowing techniques and repertoires. This lesson series is meant to be participatory (learning tunes on the fiddle) as well as inspire larger conversations about immigration, identity, and Irish & Scottish music's place in the larger tapestry of Southern culture.
