Once Upon an Art Museum

Storytime for Families Every First Wednesday | 11:00–11:30 | Free Looking for a free family activity in Salt Lake City? Admission to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts is always free every first Wednesday of the month, and now the day is extra special. Bring your youngest art appreciators to the UMFA for storytime, fine art, and hands-on activities in the galleries! Gather in the Museum lobby and follow arts educators into the galleries to explore unique works of art, read a story, and create a simple, kid-friendly art project inspired by the art on view and the story! Arturo Sandoval [U Arts Pass Event]

Jazz at Kingsbury Hall kicks off with Arturo Sandoval, a 10-time Grammy winner and one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn. His versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, and Bill Conti, to Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys among many others. He has performed with John Williams with the Boston Pops, and in the Super Bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle. Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock, and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. Chalk Art Festival " Vibes of Hope "

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month- a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized , & often taboo, topic.  The UCC uses this month to shift public perceptions, spread hope , and share vital information to our campus community . The Water Commons: Living Legacies of Utah Waterways

A comprehensive symposium dedicated to preserving the vital waterways that sustain life, health, and prosperity throughout Utah.  Water narratives from acclaimed voices including Lisa Bickmore, Utah’s poet laureate; nan seymour, prominent Great Salt Lake advocate; Paisley Rekdal, Director of the University of Utah American West Center; and Leia Larsen, water and land use reporter for The Salt Lake Tribune. Adama Delphine Fawundu in conversation with Yvonne Mpwo Wednesday, September 24, 2025 | 6–8 pm | Free   Join artist Adama Delphine Fawundu as she discusses her work and the exhibition salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu in conversation with Yvonne Mpow. This free artist talk in the Dumke Auditorium at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts will deepen your understanding of the works on view in the latest salt exhibition and their connection to the UMFA’s African Art collection. The works in this exhibition were made with a process that Fawundu calls “kpoto patchwok,” a combination of the Mende word for gathering fruits and nuts for communal nourishment (kpoto) and the Krio word for piecing together textiles (patchwok). By drawing together materials from Congo, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Brazil, Nigeria, and Utah, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Daniel Mendelsohn, translator of Homer’s Odyssey

Daniel Mendelsohn will discuss his acclaimed new translation of Homer’s Odyssey, published in April 2025 by the University of Chicago Press. His talk will be followed by a conversation with Scott Black, Professor of English and Director of the Tanner Humanities Center.  A book-signing with The King’s English Bookshop will follow the event.  Mendelsohn is Editor-at-large of The New York Review of Books, and author of several influential works, including Ecstasy and Terror: From the Greeks to Game of Thrones (2019) and Three Rings: A Tale of Exile, Narrative, and Fate (2020). Jesmyn Ward, author of Let Us Descend

Jesmyn Ward, celebrated as “the heir apparent to Toni Morrison” (LitHub) and one of the most acclaimed novelists of her generation, will deliver the 2025 David P. Cindi Textor, Department of World Languages and Cultures

Cindi Textor, Associate Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah, will give a public talk this spring drawing from her research on transnational Japan. Her scholarship examines Japan not as an isolated culture, but as a site where ideas and empires meet, focusing especially on the enduring legacies of Japanese imperialism and its intersections with American and other western empires. Her first book, Intersectional Incoherence: Zainichi Literature and the Ethics of Illegibility (University of California Press, 2024), analyzes moments of incoherence and unintelligibility in the work of Koreans in Japan, challenging conventional approaches to literary representation. She is now at work on a second book that explores how modern Japan has engaged with and reconfigured white supremacist ideology, often through processes of translation. Climate Grief Circle

Are you overwhelmed by the state of the world? Are you looking for a supportive community where you can process your feelings? Do you believe in the transformative power of grief work? If so, this group is for you! Please RSVP if you are interested in attending. We meet weekly on Wednesdays from 4-5pm in GC 1760 on 9/10, 9/17, 9/24, 10/1, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, and 11/19. The events are open to all U of U students, staff, and faculty. We're modeled on the Good Grief Network's 10 Steps to Resilience and Empowerment in a Chaotic Climate program. The ten steps are: , Accept the severity of the predicament, Practice being with uncertainty, Honor my mortality and the mortality of all, Do inner work, Develop awareness of biases and perceptions, Practice gratitude, witness beauty, and create connections, Take breaks and rest, Grieve the harm I have caused, Show up, Reinvest into meaningful efforts, Every week we work one step together moving from one to ten.
