SUDS Workshop: Working with REST APIs to access spatial data
Spatial Data Science (SUDS) Workshop, Speaker: Blake Vernon, PhD, One-U Responsible AI Postdoctoral Fellow
Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute
School of Environment, Society, and Sustainability
Thanks to the efforts of impartial federal workers, the United States government is able to collect and maintain enormous amounts of data critical to scientific research. The public can also typically rely on the government to provide programmatic remote access to those data through various REST APIs, which are often established through public-private partnerships. State and federally produced spatial data, in particular, can typically be accessed through government endpoints maintained using ESRI's ArcGIS Online (AGOL) service. In this workshop, we will learn how to interact with those endpoints using ESRI's spatial filters. We will also discuss the value of public REST services for both scientific reproducibility and economic growth.
Social at Rio Grande Café after the workshop.

Distinguished SCI Seminar: J. Nathan Kutz, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Washington
Title: Shallow Recurrent Decoders for the Automated Discovery of Physical ModelsAbstract: A major challenge in the study of science and engineering systems is that of model discovery: turning data into dynamical models that are not just predictive, but provide insight into the nature of the underlying physics and dynamics that generated the data. We introduce a number of data-driven strategies for discovering nonlinear multiscale dynamical systems and their embeddings from data. We consider two canonical cases: (i) systems for which we have full measurements of the governing variables, and (ii) systems for which we have incomplete measurements. For systems with full state measurements, we show that the recent sparse identification of nonlinear dynamical systems (SINDy) method can discover governing equations with relatively little data and introduce a sampling method that allows SINDy to scale efficiently to problems with multiple time scales, noise and parametric dependencies. For systems with incomplete…
