De-fossilizing Property Rights

This presentation will examine the complex intersections between property rights, land use, and the energy transition, analyzing how “fossilized” property laws often prioritize extraction over sustainable practices, thereby complicating efforts for a cleaner energy future. The discussion will highlight the need for comprehensive legal reforms that reshape property rights to support regenerative and equitable energy policies. In proposing major changes to the existing legal paradigm and exploring the implications of these changes, Professor Stokes illuminates possible pathways toward a climate-resilient future that addresses social equity and sustainability at the land-energy nexus. Migrant Sonority and More-Than-Human Perspectivism in Emiliano Monge's Las tierras arrasadas with Tammy Mitchell

Migrant Sonority and More-than-Human Perspectivism in Emiliano Monge’s Las tierras arrasadas    A tragic love story between two human traffickers set at the Guatemala-Mexico border, the Mexican author Emiliano Monge’s Las tierras arrasadas (2015, Among the Lost) portrays a cruel hellscape that becomes an allegory for the violence that present-day migrants endure on their journey through Mexico in search of a better life. To date, scholarship has interpreted the novel’s representation of human trafficking and migrant struggles as both performance and condemnation of the dehumanization of immigrant life that occurs on a daily basis in contemporary Mexico. Against the grain of such criticism, this talk rethinks the portrayal of migrants in Monge’s novel by attending to work’s narrative soundscape—migrant sonority intermingled with the hum of the jungle setting and the warlike din of narco Mexico. In dialogue with Eduardo Viveiros de Castro’s theory of perspectivism and Cristina Rivera Garza’s notion of… Campus Locations: Language & Communication Bldg (LNCO). Room Name/Number: 2110. Life After Dead Pool

After decades of drought, the American West is stretched to the breaking point. A changing climate and design flaws in the Glen Canyon Dam have pushed the once-massive Lake Powell reservoir to the brink of collapse—putting at risk millions of people who depend on the Colorado River for water, agriculture, and electricity. Now, as Glen Canyon reemerges, its surprising ecological rebirth reminds us that nature’s capacity to heal may well outpace our own imaginations. Environmental journalist Zak Podmore explores the complex challenges ahead and reframes the inevitable loss of Lake Powell as a turning point for a more sustainable future. Through an arresting mix of science and storytelling, Life After Dead Pool debunks the notion that the West’s water challenges are unsolvable and invites us to secure a future where the Colorado River once again runs free. Lee E. Teitelbaum Utah Law Review Symposium - Fireproofing the FDA: Power, Politics, and Public Health

This symposium will explore a revitalization of the FDA’s original missions—public health and consumer protection—by probing the intersection of politics, public health, and power at the organization.  The FDA is currently facing political interference as well as cuts to its staff and budget that could compromise its ability to appropriately vet medical products.  At the same time, FDA experts have observed that the agency needs significant reform to meet U.S. needs in the 21st century. This convening will emphasize the “how”: the methods and approaches to strengthen medical product vetting while defending the FDA from interference.  These goals bear some tension—and yet law and policy are well familiar with managing competing goals.  Lessons for how the FDA can be “fireproofed,” drawing from FDA history, administrative law, political science, or other regulatory agencies, are encouraged.  At the same time, changes to the way FDA operates may be needed to optimize the review of medical products on behalf o… Event Categories: Conferences.
