This exhibition is on view September 13, 2025–June 14, 2026. Visit umfa.utah.edu for Museum hours. Adama Delphine Fawundu is a New York-based artist of Mende, Krim, Bamileke, and Bubi descent. Her practice embodies ancestral memory across space and time, reconnecting places, objects, plants, animals, and spirits of the global African diaspora. The works in this exhibition were made with a process that Fawundu calls “kpoto patchwok,” a combination of the Mende word for gathering fruits and nuts for communal nourishment (kpoto) and the Krio word for piecing together textiles (patchwok). By drawing together materials from Congo, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Malta, Cuba, and the United States, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice. Emmet Cohen Presents: Miles and Coltrane at 100 [U Arts Pass Event]

In celebration of 100th Birthdays of John Coltrane and Miles Davis, pianist Emmet Cohen brings together an all-star quintet, including saxophonist Tivon Pennicott and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, to explore the fundamental questions that shaped their artistry: Why are we here? A champion of musical community, Cohen believes in jazz as a living, evolving conversation — one that unites people across time and place. Possessing a fluid technique, innovative tonal palette, and extensive repertoire, Cohen plays with the passion of an artist fully devoted to his medium. He has performed at the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Birdland, Jazz Standard, London’s Ronnie Scott’s, Jazzhaus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, the Cotton Club in Tokyo, and the Kennedy Center. Book Slices: Assemblage with Books

Marriott Library Discarded books are inexpensive (often free) treasure troves of assemblage materials and inspiration. In this workshop, participants are guided through the creation of a small assemblage project. A title section sliced from the spine of a discarded book provides the theme of the work and stimulates Ideas. Participants excavate the entire boo and its usable parts, working on a prepared support panel and building up layers of found objects and other materials as the theme evolves. Participants leave the workshop with an assemblage piece and learn techniques and methods to create similar work on their own.  Sue Cotter is a letterpress printer, artist-book maker, assemblage, and collage artist. After earning her art degree at the University of Nevada, Reno (1983) she went on to study the historic techniques of letterpress printing and bookmaking with Bob Blesse at the University of Nevada, Reno, Black Rock Press (1988–1990). America’s Public Lands: At a Crossroads?

The Wallace Stegner Center’s 31st annual symposium will focus on one of the most pressing issues of our time: the future of our public lands. This is a vital issue locally and regionally. From stark shifts in law and policy regulating the designation and use of public lands to ongoing demographic and economic changes in the American West, from conflicts over recreation to wildfire and other growing threats, the way we use and protect public lands continues to rapidly evolve as the region does too. The 31st annual Stegner Symposium will shine a bright light on all these issues and more. The symposium features leading scholars, advocates, and constituents in standalone addresses, panel discussions, and compelling presentations. Together, speakers will highlight the multiple—and competing—demands on public lands, with a focus on how to preserve the places that are arguably our greatest heritage as Americans. Event Categories: Conferences. Campus Locations: Quinney College of Law - S. J. (LAW). Room Name/Number: Moot Courtroom. Cost: $10-350.
