salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

This exhibition is on view September 13, 2025–June 14, 2026. Visit umfa.utah.edu for Museum hours. Adama Delphine Fawundu is a New York-based artist of Mende, Krim, Bamileke, and Bubi descent. Her practice embodies ancestral memory across space and time, reconnecting places, objects, plants, animals, and spirits of the global African diaspora. The works in this exhibition were made with a process that Fawundu calls “kpoto patchwok,” a combination of the Mende word for gathering fruits and nuts for communal nourishment (kpoto) and the Krio word for piecing together textiles (patchwok). By drawing together materials from Congo, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Malta, Cuba, and the United States, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice. Global Health Politics in the Post-USAID Era: Lessons from the US’s Global Gag Rule and its Impact on NGOs in Kenya

College of Social & Behavioral Science The Political Science Department is hosting a talk by Dr. Kelly Hunter, Postdoctoral Scholar in Political Science and Global Health Studies at Northwestern University, on Friday, 10/17 from 12-1:30 in GC 5750. Dr. Hunter will be presenting "Global Health Politics in the Post-USAID Era: Lessons from the US’s Global Gag Rule and its Impact on NGOs in Kenya."    Abstract: As the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has ceased operations and foreign aid has been dramatically cut, scholars agree that health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) will deteriorate. However, there is less attention given to the impacts that the USAID shutdown will have on intermediaries, specifically the non-governmental organizations (NGOs), who provide health services in LMICs. How does US foreign aid withdrawal impact NGOs? To examine this question, I leverage the US’s Global Gag Rule (GGR), an historic example of withdrawing family planning aid from sexual and reproductive health (SRH) NGOs… Campus Locations: Gardner Commons - Carolyn and Kem (GC). Room Name/Number: GC 5750. Campus Wide Event: Yes. Friday, October 17, 2025, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM.

Crafting a Tibetan Terroir: Winemaking in Shangri-La with Brendan Galipeau

This talk discusses a recently published book about how wine has transformed Tibetan land and lives. Set in the Sino-Tibetan border region renamed "Shangri-La" by the Chinese government for tourism promotion, Crafting a Tibetan Terroir considers how the deployment of the French notion of terroir works to create new forms of ethno-regional identities and village landscapes through the production of Tibetan wine as a commodity. In Shangri-La, a rapidly developing international ethno-travel destination, European histories and global capitalism are being reestablished and reformulated through viticulture, which has altered landscapes and livelihoods. Art + Cinema: The Rider

In partnership with the University of Utah Department of Film and Media Arts, the UMFA is excited to host a special screening of The Rider (2017), the critically acclaimed film from director Chloé Zhao.  After a tragic riding accident, young cowboy Brady (Brady Jandreau), once a rising star of the rodeo circuit, is warned that his competition days are over. Back home in South Dakota, Brady finds himself questioning what remains when he can no longer do the one thing that gave his life meaning: to ride and compete. In an effort to regain control of his fate, he sets out on a deeply personal journey to rediscover his identity and redefine what it means to be a man in the heartland of America. The film features a remarkable cast of non-professional Lakota actors from the Pine Ridge Reservation playing fictionalized versions of themselves, including Jandreau—who grew up riding and training horses—as well as his father, sister, wife, and close friends.  Following the screening, join us for a post-film… Event Categories: Films. Liberal Arts and Sciences Synergizing Opportunities Seminar Series

College of Social & Behavioral Science The formation of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides an opportunity to catalyze connections among faculty who previously might have been siloed in their respective colleges. LASSO will bring together center directors in CSBS, Humanities, and Science in a series of conversations that will stimulate dialogue, foster new networks of collaboration, and lay the groundwork for interdisciplinary projects. Centers are hubs of intellectual collaboration and outreach. The new LAS structure offers an opportunity for Center Directors to begin to learn about our respective programs, research, and outreach as a first step in developing new collaborative projects, sharing research, and making our scholarly work more fully accessible to the LAS community. We will begin with brown bag discussions about the centers in the three colleges, then in the spring move to conversations that will focus on topical issues that have cross-cutting LAS stakeholders. … Campus Locations: Gardner Commons - Carolyn and Kem (GC). Cindi Textor, Department of World Languages and Cultures

Cindi Textor, Associate Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of Utah, will give a public talk this spring drawing from her research on transnational Japan. Liberal Arts and Sciences Synergizing Opportunities Seminar Series

College of Social & Behavioral Science The formation of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides an opportunity to catalyze connections among faculty who previously might have been siloed in their respective colleges. LASSO offers a way to address this enduring challenge. … Campus Locations: Sutton Building - Frederick Albert (FASB). Room Name/Number: 295. Campus Wide Event: Yes. Friday, December 5, 2025, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM.
