salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu
This exhibition is on view September 13, 2025–June 14, 2026. Visit umfa.utah.edu for Museum hours.
Adama Delphine Fawundu is a New York-based artist of Mende, Krim, Bamileke, and Bubi descent. Her practice embodies ancestral memory across space and time, reconnecting places, objects, plants, animals, and spirits of the global African diaspora.
The works in this exhibition were made with a process that Fawundu calls “kpoto patchwok,” a combination of the Mende word for gathering fruits and nuts for communal nourishment (kpoto) and the Krio word for piecing together textiles (patchwok). By drawing together materials from Congo, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Malta, Cuba, and the United States, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice.

Brave Conversation: Is the U Hostile to Students of Faith?
Join us for our final Brave Conversation of the semester – a structured conversation led by trained student facilitators on the topic Is the U Hostile to Students of Faith? All members of the University community are invited to join us for a free lunch and a respectful conversation where the goal is to understand one another – not to persuade, debate, or convince. We’re hoping to bring together a group that is diverse in terms of religious identities – including the non-religious – and in terms of viewpoints on this issue.
According to the 2024 INSPIRES Campus Climate Index, the climate at the University of Utah is better for a variety of religious identities than at the average public university, yet students often report challenges with finding appropriate food, receiving exemptions to observe holidays, and encountering insensitive comments from peers and professors. Come to share your own experience, learn how it compares to your peers, and discuss actions we can take to improve campus climate.

40th Annual Jefferson B. Fordham Debate - Institutional Neutrality and Other Academic Freedom Controversies
A record number of universities have recently announced—by either adopting a policy or affirming the principles of institutional neutrality—that they will stay silent on social and political controversies. Several states, including Utah, have forced their public universities to adopt policies of institutional neutrality.
Proponents of institutional neutrality argue that it is an essential condition of academic freedom because university statements on issues of the day chill the speech of faculty and students with dissenting views. Opponents contend that institutional neutrality is used to selectively punish and shut down speech as well as to mask inherently value-laden institutional decisions (such as investment decisions).
U.S. universities have navigated unprecedented changes under the Trump administration, which has expanded Title VI oversight; sought to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives; revoked student visas and sought to deport students; increased taxes on university end…

Art + Cinema: Northern Lights
In partnership with the University of Utah Department of Film & Media Arts, the UMFA is excited to host a special screening of Northern Lights (1978), the critically acclaimed film directed by John Hanson and Rob Nilsson.
Winner of the 1979 Camera d'Or, Northern Lights, a unique work of political cinema from the late 1970s, dramatizes small North Dakotan wheat farmers' political struggle against the bankers and railroad magnates pushing them into bankruptcy. Two young lovers get swept up in the turmoil surrounding the formation of the populist Nonpartisan League in the mid-1910's. Shot on location in black-and-white 16mm with a cast of nonprofessional actors, this deeply moving, politically committed film is a masterpiece of American independent cinema. The 4K digital restoration of Northern Lights was created by IndieCollect and Metropolis Post in collaboration with directors John Hanson and Rob Nilsson.
Following the screening, join us for a post-film discussion with special guest Alex…

Liberal Arts and Sciences Synergizing Opportunities Seminar Series
College of Social & Behavioral Science
The formation of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides an opportunity to catalyze connections among faculty who previously might have been siloed in their respective colleges. LASSO offers a way to address this enduring challenge. LASSO will bring together center directors in CSBS, Humanities, and Science in a series of conversations that will stimulate dialogue, foster new networks of collaboration, and lay the groundwork for interdisciplinary projects.
Centers are hubs of intellectual collaboration and outreach. The new LAS structure offers an opportunity for Center Directors to begin to learn about our respective programs, research, and outreach as a first step in developing new collaborative projects, sharing research, and making our scholarly work more fully accessible to the LAS community. We will begin with brown bag discussions about the centers in the three colleges, then in the spring move to conversations that will focus on topical issues that have cross-cutting LAS stakeholders.

By drawing together materials from Congo, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Malta, Cuba, and the United States, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu
Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez [U Arts Pass Event]
At first glance, the paths of Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martinez might seem to follow a similar rhythm—two Havana-born musical prodigies who found their voices early and followed their passion to the USA. Dig a little deeper, and you’ll discover two stories as unique and vibrant as the music they create.
Together, they represent two brilliant threads of the Cuban musical tapestry and when they meet, sparks fly. Both Grammy-nominated artists, Rodriguez and Martinez bring Cuban roots to the global stage, each blending the sounds of their homeland with influences from jazz.
“The mind-melding between the two is sublime…it’s a joy to hear their visions combine” - NPR
Get ready for a night of rhythm, passion, and world-class artistry like no other.
