Panel Discussion on the Evolution of Diet and Nutrition

Anthropology How did endurance running shape the human body-and what can it teach us about health, movement, and life today? Survival programs use insights from human evolution to illuminate consequential challenges in modern life. Each program begins with a familiar present-day question, connects it to the evolutionary past through current scientific evidence, and considers what those insights mean for our future. Through accessible storytelling and concrete examples, active researchers make clear how studying human evolution can help us better understand—and navigate-the world we live in today. Campus Wide Event: Yes. Wednesday, October 21, 2026, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Hinckley Caucus Rm, GC 2018.

Ming Hammond TFR Seminar

Chemistry-Seminars TFR Chemistry Seminar with Ming Hammond, University of Utah TBBC 4630 4th floor Thatcher In-Person Seminar Title: Advancing the fluorogenic toolkit to study signaling and enzyme activity by Ming Hammond, University of Utah Abstract: Fluorescent dyes have enabled cellular imaging of proteins, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules, in the process revolutionizing our understanding of cell biology. A subset of these dyes are fluorogenic, meaning that they exhibit large changes in quantum yield and so “turn on” fluorescence in certain environments or upon reaction. We have been exploring ways to convert this fluorogenic activity into a read-out of enzyme activity in real-time in live cells. By combining fluorogenic dyes with RNA aptamers, we have designed and developed RNA-based fluorescent biosensors, which we have applied to study methyltransferase activity and inhibition, immune and bacterial signaling. In this seminar, I will highlight some of our latest innovations in RNA-based biosensor design. In… Campus Locations: Thatcher Chemistry Building (TBBC). Campus Wide Event: Yes. Jeremy Rosen, author of Genre Bending: The Plasticity of Form in Contemporary Literary Fiction

Tanner Humanities Center Detective, horror, fantasy, romance, science fiction, spy thrillers, westerns, zombie novels. In recent decades, acclaimed and ambitious writers of literary fiction have increasingly gravitated to popular fiction genres. In this comprehensive account, Jeremy Rosen describes literary fiction's embrace of genre fiction's conceits as “genre bending” and argues that while literary writers adopt genres for a wide variety of purposes, what they share is a revitalized attitude toward genre—a recognition that while genres can be used in formulaic ways, they can also be adapted and transformed endlessly. Rosen reads across the outpouring of fiction of the last several decades by writers like Margaret Atwood, Michael Chabon, Jennifer Egan, Louise Erdrich, Kazuo Ishiguro, Chang-rae Lee, David Mitchell, Cormac McCarthy, Ian McEwan, Haruki Murakami, and Colson Whitehead. He finds that literary writers’ embrace of popular genres is the product of several seemingly contradictory forces, including their attempt to extend a… Campus Locations: Tanner Irish Humanities Building - Carolyn (CTIHB). Frontiers of Science Lecture featuring Martin Chalfie

College of Science Martin Chalfie, University Professor and former chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University. Full bio: https://chalfielab.biology.columbia.edu/people/martin-chalfie In 1939, the first director of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, Abraham Flexner, wrote an article in Harper's Magazine titled "The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge." Flexner questioned whether our idea of usefulness had become too narrow for the wide-ranging, unpredictable nature of human curiosity, arguing that real discovery happens when scientists are free to explore without needing to justify usefulness in advance. Several Nobel Prizes have gone to discoveries that emerged sideways from what researchers originally set out to study. Chalfie will argue that "useless knowledge" is as necessary today as ever for improving human health and well-being, and will offer thoughts on how we can create space for the unexpected discoveries that drive future scientific breakthroughs. ENABLERS: Normalizing the Unimaginable - Legal Accountability and Professional Responsibility

Political Science “The Constitution does not authorize Congress to create independent officers or agencies that exercise executive power.” For more than a century, Congress has created independent agencies designed to operate with some independence from presidential control, including through statutory limits on the President’s power to remove their leaders. These agencies exercise substantial authority over areas such as labor, communications, securities, consumer protection, and monetary policy. But the Constitution vests executive power in the President and requires the President to ensure that federal law is faithfully executed. How much control must the President have over officials who exercise executive power? Supporters of strong presidential control argue that officials who exercise executive power must remain accountable to the President and cannot be insulated from presidential supervision. Critics argue that the Constitution allows Congress to create independent officers and agencies, and that complete presidenti… Campus Locations: Quinney College of Law - S. J. (LAW). Salt 18: Amor Muñoz’s UMFA Public Opening

College of Humanities Amor Muñoz is a Mexico City-based artist who works at the intersections of technology, craft, labor, and biology. In her expansive, research-driven practice, she traces how technology is deeply embedded in our material and cultural lives.   For her salt exhibition, Muñoz turns to corn (also known by the Nahuatl name elotl, or elote in Spanish). Corn is more than a food: it is a carrier of memory, a record of cultural exchange, and a living system of knowledge that has been passed across generations. The exhibition features an immersive installation called KaleidescopElote. Using enlarged resin kernels as building blocks, the central sculpture can be an observatory, a lighthouse, a seed bank, or an oracle. With an interactive digital kaleidoscope of stars and seeds inside, the work explores ancient relationships between agriculture, architecture, and celestial observation.  Attend the free Public Opening, October 23! Campus Locations: Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA). Campus Wide Event: Yes. Friday, October 23, 2026, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. For more info visit umfa.utah.edu.

Language as a Function of Time: Putting the Rate of Change Inside the Description of Language - A Presentation by Cliff Miller

Linguistics Abstract: Change runs through every part of language. Sounds shift, morphology and syntax evolve, and new words and their meanings appear every day. This talk presents a framework, LAAF (Language as a Function), that puts language change inside the description and formalizes it mathematically. The linguistic state of a speaker at time t is written L(t) = Φ(K(t), Ȧ(t)). K(t) is the knowledge that a speaker has stored: elements, the relations between them, and for each element the values it has been experienced with. Ȧ(t) is the rate and direction of change of those values. Φ resolves the two into the speaker's current language state. The LAAF framework encapsulates two traditional distinctions in its central equation: Saussure's langue and Chomsky's competence fall on the stored side, K, and parole and performance on the resolved side, L. I show how the same equation runs at three timescales (a conversation, a lifetime, generations), how the rate and direction of an individual speaker's language change at a… Event Categories: Colloquia. Economics CAKE Talk Seminar: Joe Price

Economics Professor Joe Price will present his lecture on the paper, "Like a Good Neighbor: Childhood Neighbors Influence Occupation Choice" Occupation choice is a key determinant of economic mobility. This paper studies how childhood neighbors influence occupational choices and later-life earnings. Using linked historical U.S. census records for over six million boys and four million girls, we reconstruct neighborhood microgeography to identify childhood neighbors and their occupations. We find that living next door to someone in a given occupation increases the probability of working in that same occupation 30 years later by about 10 percent relative to other children on the same street. The transmission effect is higher with more intense exposure, in more connected neighborhoods, and among more similar families. Exposure to high-income or highly educated neighbors has lasting economic effects, leading to significant gains in adult income and education even compared to other children from the same street. "The People of Yorktown in Revolutionary Times" the O. Meredith Wilson Lecture from Kathleen DuVal

History Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Kathleen DuVal will present a public lecture entitled “The People of Yorktown in Revolutionary Times.” Yorktown, Virginia, holds a familiar place in the history of the American Revolution: In the Siege of Yorktown in the fall of 1781, American and French forces helped to end the Revolutionary War and win American independence. Yet the famous siege is only part of Yorktown’s involvement in the Revolution. Its townspeople participated in the boycotts and protests from the beginning, and repeated invasions endangered the town and its people. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Kathleen DuVal explores what the Revolution was like for the people of Yorktown—men and women, wealthy and poor, free and enslaved—and how their experiences can help us craft a more complete history of how people lived through the Revolution and what it meant to them. Reception at 2pm, lecture at 3pm. Campus Locations: Alumni House - Eccles (ALUMNI). Room Name/Number: Ballroom A/B. Cost: Free. Campus Wide Event: Yes. Thursday, November 12, 2026, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.

Kevin Reed Public Lecture: "Advancing climate solutions through discovery and partnership"

Wilkes Center Abstract: Addressing the complex challenges associated with climate change requires strong partnerships among universities, industry, government, and communities to better understand local climate impacts and co-develop solutions that are practical and responsive to regional needs. Universities play a critical role in advancing discovery, fostering innovation, and serving the communities and regions they represent through research, education, and collaboration. This presentation highlights how research universities can convene diverse partners to accelerate climate solutions and translate scientific discovery into meaningful regional impact. Drawing on the experiences of the New York Climate Exchange, it illustrates how cross-sector collaboration can advance research, inform decision-making, and help build more resilient and sustainable communities BIO: Dr. Kevin Reed is the Chief Climate Scientist at the New York Climate Exchange, leading the strategic direction and co-development of research programs with… Thursday, November 12, 2026, 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM. Henry Eyring Lecture | Daniel Neumark, University of California - Berkeley

Chemistry-Seminars TBBC 4630 4th floor Thatcher In-Person Seminar Title: Spectroscopy and Scattering Experiments on Flat Liquid Jets, Abstract: The dynamics of photoexcited solute molecules and the properties of liquid interfaces are studied by carrying out spectroscopy and scattering experiments on flat liquid water jets. In one set of experiments, solute dynamics are probed using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in which molecules are photoexcited with a femtosecond UV pulse and photoionized with a time-delayed femtosecond XUV pulse (at 21.7 eV). The time-dependent photoelectron spectra provide a unique probe of the relaxation of photoexcited neutral and anionic species in aqueous solution. Results will be presented for several negative ions including phenolate,1 bromophenolate, 2 and nitrophenolate. These experiments probe the competition among the various relaxation pathways including internal conversion, dissociation, and electron ejection. In complementary experiments, the liquid interface is explored in… Campus Wide Event: Yes. Monday, November 16, 2026, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM. For more info visit sites.google.com.

Parry Lecture | David Cahen, Weizmann Institute

Chemistry-Seminars Parry Lectureship Seminar at the University of Utah with David Cahen, Weizmann Institute TBBC 4630 4th floor - Thatcher In-person seminar Title: Durable Materials: a Chemical Challenge for Sustainable Energy  &  Electronics, Abstract: Achieving true sustainability by mid-century requires more than transitioning to renewable and low-carbon forms of energy; the materials that enable these technologies must themselves be sustainable. This presents a fundamental scientific challenge. Many of the materials used today for solar-energy conversion, batteries, hydrogen production, and the conversion of CO₂ into fuels and chemicals rely on resources, processing methods, or device architectures that are not inherently compatible with long-term sustainability. Moreover, sustainability demands long operational lifetimes, a requirement that challenges conventional approaches to manufacturing and consumption and renews the importance of designing materials and devices that can be repaired, regenerated, or healed. National Theatre Live, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”

Tanner Humanities Center Olivier and Tony Award winner Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) joins Aidan Turner (Rivals) in a striking new staging of Christopher Hampton’s celebrated adaptation of the classic novel, where among the glittering salons of the super-rich, one misstep can mean ruin. Marquise de Merteuil is a master in the art of survival. Alongside the magnetic Vicomte de Valmont, they turn seduction into strategy and weaponise desire. But when their alliance collapses into rivalry, the battle between them threatens to destroy everyone in their path. Filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, Marianne Elliott (Angels in America) directs this thrilling game of love, lies, and social warfare. Since 2009, National Theatre Live has brought acclaimed British theatre to over 5.5 million viewers worldwide, featuring productions like Phèdre with Helen Mirren, Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch, and Yerma with Billie Piper. Each show is filmed live with cameras placed to give cinema audiences the “best seat in the house.”… Alternate Location: Broadway Centre Cinemas, 111 E. Broadway. National Theatre Live, “The Misanthrope”

Tanner Humanities Center Award-winner Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) plays the title role in this razor-sharp reimagining of Molière’s classic dark comedy. Telling the truth isn’t always that simple. Alice, a brilliant novelist, despises the carefully constructed lies of modern society. But the more she challenges those around her, the fiercer the backlash becomes. Soon, she must confront the price of speaking her truth in a world that would rather silence her.  Filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, Indhu Rubasingham directs Martin Crimp’s (Cyrano de Bergerac) highly anticipated play. Since 2009, National Theatre Live has brought acclaimed British theatre to over 5.5 million viewers worldwide, featuring productions like Phèdre with Helen Mirren, Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch, and Yerma with Billie Piper. Each show is filmed live with cameras placed to give cinema audiences the “best seat in the house.” The Tanner Humanities Center began screening National Theatre Live in 2010, now hosted at Salt Lake Film Society’s… Alternate Location: Broadway Centre Cinemas, 111 E. Broadway. Ticket URL: https://tanner.utah.edu/center-events/the-misanthrope-national-theatre-live/. Campus Wide Event: Yes. Saturday, January 16, 2027, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM.
