Ph.D. Dissertation Defense - Amanda Wood

Please join us for the following Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student Presentation: Ph.D. Dissertation Defense Towards the informed design of synthetic mucins: analysis of human mucus samples and the development of authentic bioactive mimetics Monday, January 26, 2026 11:00 AM SMBB 3250 (in the BME office suite) Zoom Meeting ID: 819 2885 9502 ~ Passcode: mucin Presenter: Amanda Wood Advisor: Dr. Jessica Kramer The human body is coated with two main surfaces to protect us from our environment. Keratinized epithelial cells form a strong, visible barrier, while the more underappreciated mucosa covers all interior surfaces of our bodies. This mucosa is formed by the attachment of glycoproteins called mucins to living epithelial cells. Mucins are also secreted, forming the biological hydrogel mucus. These extremely heterogeneous glycoproteins are coded by MUC genes to create the characteristic peptide backbone, while post-translational modifications, such as glycosylation, is a seemingly chaotic wild west. Whil… Campus Locations: Sorenson Molecular Biotechnology Building - James LeVoy (SMBB). Alternate Location: Zoom Meeting ID: 819 2885 9502 ~ Passcode: mucin. Biomedical Engineering Seminar - Dr. Andrew E. Anderson

BIOENGINEERING ELEVATED TALK CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, Mechanisms in Motion: Imaging, Morphometrics, and Modeling of Hip OA Pathophysiology,   Dr. Andrew E. Anderson, Professor and Division Chief of Research, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Utah, In person in SMBB 2650! There is growing consensus amongst orthopaedic practitioners that hip joint osteoarthritis (OA) is predominately the result of underlying anatomical deformities.  However, at present, it is not feasible to stratify risk of future hip OA based on the presenting anatomy alone. Notably, many individuals – from young adults to seniors – demonstrate abnormal hip anatomy, yet they do not have a history of hip pain, nor do they demonstrate characteristic thinning of cartilage. One of the persistent challenges toward identifying at risk patients is that hip anatomy is complex, which makes it difficult to objectively evaluate deformities.  Additionally, the location of the hip deep within the… Event Categories: Seminars. Biomedical Engineering Seminar - Dr. Dustin Williams

BIOENGINEERING ELEVATED TALK CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH, Developing a Biofilm Buster, Tony Stark Style,   Dr. Dustin Williams, Professor, Dept. of Orthopaedics, University of Utah, In person in SMBB 2650! Fracture-related infection (FRI) treatment remains a major unmet need in healthcare. Rates of FRI have gone unchanged since the time fracture types were defined in the 1970s. Current standards of care frequently fail in part because they do not target the biofilm phenotype, which underpins difficult-to-treat infections, and are not refillable. The Purgo Pouch addresses these limitations; it is a surgically implanted refillable drug delivery device that sustains local, high-dose antibiotic therapy via passive diffusion through a rate-controlling membrane. Using sheep models of biofilm-inoculated FRI in tibiae and biofilm-inoculated fusion rods in spines, Purgo Pouch safety and efficacy were tested with various antibiotics, tobramycin being the lead delivery… Event Categories: Seminars.
