salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu
This exhibition is on view September 13, 2025–June 14, 2026. Visit umfa.utah.edu for Museum hours.
Adama Delphine Fawundu is a New York-based artist of Mende, Krim, Bamileke, and Bubi descent. Her practice embodies ancestral memory across space and time, reconnecting places, objects, plants, animals, and spirits of the global African diaspora.
The works in this exhibition were made with a process that Fawundu calls “kpoto patchwok,” a combination of the Mende word for gathering fruits and nuts for communal nourishment (kpoto) and the Krio word for piecing together textiles (patchwok). By drawing together materials from Congo, Brazil, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria, Malta, Cuba, and the United States, Fawundu stitches together a collective history of the African diaspora that imagines a more interconnected future. Her work is displayed in conversation with objects from the UMFA’s African art collection, which were selected by the artist for their resonance with her practice.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

Department of Theatre presents "Urinetown, The Musical" [U Arts Pass Event]
Theatre
Music by Mark Hollmann, Lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and Book by Kotis
Director David Eggers
Urinetown is a smartly written musical comedy that cleverly uses references to musical theatre classics to make us consider the ridiculousness of power and greed, the establishment, the anti-establishment, politics, capitalism, and rebellion, all while laughing. The grim realities of water scarcity is part of everyday life in some parts of the world right now, and as we look globally at environmental issues, and locally at the state of the great Salt Lake, it’s not hard to imagine the farfetched circumstances of Urinetown being closer than they were when the show opened on Broadway in 2001.

March 20-April 4, 2026

Play
Loyalty, Legacy, and Love for the Game, LeBron James isn’t just a basketball superstar—he was Cleveland’s hero. As one of the greatest players in NBA history, his impact on the city was undeniable throughout his years on the court there. In King James, Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo) crafts a funny and deeply poignant story about two friends whose lives are forever shaped by their shared devotion to their idol. Exploring the power of sports, loyalty, and human connection, King James brings the spirit of athleticism back to the Einar Nielsen Field House.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

Arms Around America [U Arts Pass Event]
Los Angeles-based theater group Dan Froot & Company’s Arms Around America is based on stories of families whose lives have been shaped by guns. Book-length oral histories of families in South Florida, Western Montana, and Southern California were transformed into audio dramas that became a podcast and eventually a live show. Stage and Cinema called it, “an all-around fabulous evening of unconventional live theatre.”
By opening a window into these families’ lives, Dan Froot & Company explore diverse perspectives and foster dialogue around the complex roles that guns play in our society. Their hope is that this project can help us all learn how to maintain each other’s humanity when discussing divisive topics. AAA received a prestigious National Theater Project award and commissions from the National Performance Network and UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance.

The grim realities of water scarcity is part of everyday life in some parts of the world right now, and as we look globally at environmental issues, and locally at the state of the great Salt Lake, it’s not hard to imagine the farfetched circumstances of Urinetown being closer than they were when the show opened on Broadway in 2001.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

Artist Talk: Jacob Riddle
Gather in the auditorium at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts to hear from the 2026 Marva and John Warnock Artist in Residence, Jacob Riddle.
The Marva and John Warnock biennial residency program at the University of Utah aims to expose students to new, innovative, and diverse contemporary art practices while providing an opportunity for trilateral exchange amongst students, faculty, and the public at large. The program has quickly become an important catalyst for dialogue encompassing contemporary issues of art-making, pedagogy, interdisciplinary and collaborative work, art in the community, and art as activism.
Jacob Riddle is an interdisciplinary artist, curator and educator with a passion for foraging connections between technology and the natural world. Drawing inspiration from his background in construction and labor industries, as well as his upbringing wading through the limestone creeks of the Appalachian foothills, Jacob muddies seemingly disparate realms.

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu

A True Story of Kindness in the Wake of Tragedy, When the world stood still on 9/11, an unexpected resilience unfolded in a remote Canadian town. Come From Away, a powerful and uplifting musical based on true events, tells the story of 38 diverted flights carrying nearly 7,000 passengers who found themselves stranded in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland. Undaunted by logistics and language barriers, the people of Gander welcomed the stranded travelers into their community with open arms, recognizing that we’re all part of a global family. Don’t miss PTC’s “guaranteed-to-restore-your-faith-in-humanity” Utah premiere!

salt 17: Adama Delphine Fawundu
