Abravanel Distinguished Composer Series: Richard Festinger - Concert

On February 9th, 2026, the University of Utah welcomes this year’s Abravanel Distinguished Visiting Composer, Richard Festinger. Richard Festinger will present a lecture titled "Instinct and Design, Spontaneity and Constraint," in Dumke Recital Hall (DGH) at 12 PM, and he is the featured composer in the Abravanel concert, at 7:30 PM, in the same venue.  The concert features works that combine art, personal expression, and issues of society at large. It includes two works by Richard Festinger, Invocation for reed quintet, and Icarus in Flight for string quartet, which raises climate awareness and is inspired by climate change data, combining art and science in an imaginative musical way. Percussion Invitational Concert

Experience an evening of rhythm, energy, and artistry as the award-winning University of Utah Percussion Ensemble and Utah Percussion Group take the stage alongside select high school percussion ensembles bringing together artists and students from across Utah for a dynamic celebration of rhythm, color, and creativity in the percussive arts. Schmidt Vocal Competition - Utah Regional

Talented high school singers from across the region will compete in the Schmidt Vocal Competition Utah Regional, hosted by the University of Utah. This one-day event includes two live rounds of classical voice performance and a master class with top voice professionals, including Professors Julie Wright-Costa and Kirstin Chávez from the University of Utah. Schmidt Vocal Arts will award up to $8,000 in total cash prizes at the competition. All finalists are eligible for a $4,000 matching scholarship to attend the University of Utah. The top three singers may also qualify for additional need-based scholarships and will advance to the Schmidt Vocal Competition High School Nationals for a chance to win up to $10,000.
