"The Mountains Are Calling, but at what price?: Yosemite's Tourism Dilemma", Dr. Michael Childers
Over four million people visit Yosemite National Park every year. They come to stand at the base of Yosemite Falls, walk among the giant sequoias of Mariposa Grove, and listen to a ranger tell of the park's natural history during a fireside talk. This number underscores both Yosemite's popularity and tourism's costs. Based on his recent book, The Mountains Are Calling: Tourists and the Unmaking of Yosemite National Park, Colorado State University history professor Michael Childers will explain how visitors helped build Yosemite's popularity, while also becoming its greatest environmental threat. Dr. Michael Childers is is an associate professor of history at Colorado State University and the author of The Mountains Are Calling: Tourists and the Unmaking of Yosemite National Park. Born and raised in Colorado mountains, his work focuses on the mounting challenges facing the American West from water development to tourism.

Lessons from Recently Published Book Authors, with tea and treats!
Please join us for the next College of Humanities Research Event, “Lessons from Recently Published Book Authors, with tea and treats!” In recent years, College of Humanities faculty have published a record number of acclaimed academic books.
This afternoon gathering will celebrate their work and make the publishing process more visible. It will take place on Friday, October 23rd from 3-4:30 pm in LNCO 2110. Presenting authors include: Leandra Hernández, Ashton Lazarus, Joe Metz, Melissa Parks, Susie Porter, Jeremy Rosen, Natalie Stillman-Webb, and Thomas Swenson.

"The People of Yorktown in Revolutionary Times" the O. Meredith Wilson Lecture from Kathleen DuVal
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Kathleen DuVal will present a public lecture entitled “The People of Yorktown in Revolutionary Times.”
Yorktown, Virginia, holds a familiar place in the history of the American Revolution: In the Siege of Yorktown in the fall of 1781, American and French forces helped to end the Revolutionary War and win American independence. Yet the famous siege is only part of Yorktown’s involvement in the Revolution. Its townspeople participated in the boycotts and protests from the beginning, and repeated invasions endangered the town and its people. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Kathleen DuVal explores what the Revolution was like for the people of Yorktown—men and women, wealthy and poor, free and enslaved—and how their experiences can help us craft a more complete history of how people lived through the Revolution and what it meant to them.
